Do not buy the J.J. McCarthy hype, Pats have not received 'serious' offer for No. 3 pick | THE HERD

The 2024 NFL Draft is tomorrow and more reports are heating up. Peyton Manning said the Denver Broncos are reportedly 'very interested' in Michigan's J.J. McCarthy. Colin Cowherd does not understand the McCarthy hype, explaining how he is "Mitch Trubisky with a better college coach." Meanwhile, the New England Patriots expressed moving back in the draft but have reportedly not received a "serious" offer for the No. 3 pick. Colin reacts to the report and triples down on New England staying put at No. 3.

  • Pretty sure the term he once used on Baker was “undraftable” He’s also ignoring that he completely whiffed on Darnold and Lance, so he’s not exactly Nostradamus in QB scouting. McCarthy’s arm talent is awesome. Coaches can fix accuracy and foot mechanics and his leadership is top notch. Really hoping McCarthy falls to the right team and tears it up.

    @smh0825@smh082524 күн бұрын
  • Colin you need to watch more film. JJ throws with more velocity and accuracy on the run than many of the 1st round QB in th draft do with feet set. There is NO part of his throw he does better with feet set. He constantly threw under pressure and moved in the pocket. Only 1 draft QB has a higher completion percentage. Yeah: he’ll miss a throw or two, but math proves he misses fewer than anybody who’s gonna he drafted besides Nix. He’s smarter than any QB. He reads the field better than any. He’s the only one with extensive experience calling out protection packages, calling audibles, shifting into multiple variable movement sets…. Few weeks back you complained he was too small. Then you got called out that you were using incorrect stats and found he’s actually bigger than half of the 1st round considerations. Then you shift to a reasonable “not enough touches.” But now you’ve abandoned that and just are making things up? He is without a doubt the most pro-ready QB out there. There is nobody who could be inserted as a starter THIS year and have more success. Long term, I don’t think he has the best pro career. But I gotta find out why you invent reasons to hate on him. And you’re a huge hypocrite if you’re OK with Caleb. Of all the QB, Caleb benefitted the most from playing on his team. His stats are what they are because he was stacked at WR, constantly played from behind and played beyobd subpar defenses. The few times he played solid defenses he absolutely struggled. You can’t apply the same phenomena differently to different guys.

I think there is enough talent in qbs 4-6 that teams may be willing to risk a less punishing trade to get a guy. He has a strong ego yet is the consummate team player. He has always put the team and winning above his personal stats. He is truly humble and utterly coachable. He is smart as a whip, and quick on the uptake. He arm is a rocket and he moves better than 95 %of QBs. And when it counts, on 3rd an +7 yards, he is better than them all. He moves the chains. • If a QB is so ultra valuable then you're gonna see teams go fishing for guys like McCarthy. You just cant go fishing every year or using first and second round picks because you'll decimate your team.

  • Colin, I love you. But the logic of saying that the best quarterback drafted is not always the best quarterback makes no sense. From a predictive standpoint if you really believe that, you trade the first pick for the 10th pick.

  • New England isn't getting any calls because everyone knows there is only 2 first round Qbs in this draft. I coached Qbs a long time. Jayden Daniels I have as Qb1. He isn't generational, but is a solid passer and a twitchy fast runner. Arm is ok, but his great footwork provide a solid throwing base and when he runs, he explodes into the secondary level. Caleb Williams athletically is special, but the way he plays the Qb position is concerning. Just makes too many things difficult. Simple 3 step concepts with early wide open targets turns into run around playground football where he relies on his incredible improvising skills. As a coach he can be frustrating to grade because there are so many "why is he doing that?" comments on the grade sheet. Of course, you will have an equal amount of "Wow! what a play" with Caleb. His small frame is also concerning. All that being said, no doubt Caleb has a chance to be a top 10 Qb in the league. Drake Maye to me needs a season or 2 to sit and learn. Eyes, footwork, timing, being ready to throw, adjusting protections...there is a lot. He has the size and can run. Just needs more time to learn how to play the Qb position if he is going to be an issue for NFL defenses. JJ McCarthy has to many instances where I am asking myself if he saw that defender or not. He is only 21 and has plenty of time to develop. He needs to go to a team that can afford to let him marinate on the sideline and learn from a season pro Qb. Penix no doubt has the best arm strength. His heavy feet are a problem. He throws way too many balls with a bad throwing base. Doesn't have the most fluid hips so he ends up throwing too many balls that sail. He also seems to struggle with seeing routes over the middle of the field. He is very comfortable throwing deep fades. I just can't see him handling muddy pockets well. Since he loves the deep pass, that means he will need time to let routes develop. He needs to quicken his footwork in a big way. With his injury history and not being a very twitchy Qb, he will scare teams off. All that being said, his aggressive approach to push the ball down field will dictate coverages. Add to that he has overcome so much, he has grit. Teammates love that. If he gets his footwork ironed out, he will be a fun Qb to watch indeed.

  • Caleb is probably 50/50 a franchise qb. Jayden, same imho. The rest? Crapshoot. So then, who is an almost surefire All Pro player? Marvin jr? Alt? Those are the players worth trading to #3 for imho. They aren't qb's so their value declines.

  • By "serious" they probably mean 3 first round picks.. a lot of teams I'm sure don't want to give up that much, not knowing who you're going to get. Draft night I'm sure they'll get a lot, if "their guy" is there

  • You can’t make a serious offer if you don’t know who’s gonna be there at 3. The “media consensus” is Daniels at 2. According to you, If a third of the league is high on Daniels and the rumor is he’s going second why would you offer anything serious to New England if your guy isn’t going to be there? I expect them to receive more respectable offers once they are on the clock. Regardless, New England and the Krafts have said they need to address the quarterback situation and they’ve spoken highly of Drake Maye. I don’t see them moving from 3 unless it’s a record breaking haul. I think Maye is a patriot

  • I would not buy into the JJ McCarthy hype… I don’t even think he’s a first round quarterback anymore. He has a strong arm, is very athletic, ran a pro style offense, has good intangibles… but he struggles to read the field when he’s not throwing short, he struggles to anticipate windows before they open, he struggles to throw the ball accurately to his receivers before they make their breaks.. people like to talk to down about Michael Penix because he struggled against Michigan, but nobody talks about how McCarthy struggled against Maryland, or he struggled against Bama 90% of the game, of course, Michigan won the games, because they are stacked roster… But if they were as hot and cold as McCarthy was most of the season, they would not have won 10 games.. I would take McCarthy in the second at best

  • I don't the JJ hype either , but I don't we've had enough of a sample size to compare. He just didn't throw that much at Michigan . I like Maye , but , like Zeke , he always needed so much time and protection to complete a pass. Heck , most all college QBs would be good under that . I like Penix as my #3 QB overall. I'd say Williams and Daniels a step above. Like I wrote before , I'd love to see Penix and Odunze paired together in the NFL. I'll probably have my more that accurate mock draft tomorrow. I just didn't want Cowherd to steal my content again ;)
