Great vid, Chris. If you paint your calipers a bright color like blue or red, it's best to paint them silver first. Makes the color pop and uses much less coats of actual color.
Really is that so?
@@942doc1 Yea, it's easier for a color to pop more when it's applied on a lighter color. If you spray, for example, red over black, it's going to take more coats to be as bright as red over white

Thanks Chris. I learn a lot from your videos. I have started doing my own maintenance lately thanks to your videos. They are very detailed and simple. God bless!
You made it look so easy. I think I will give this a go. Just replaced calipers , so not really rusty yet. Seems like a good time. Thank- you- sir.!
A drill with a wire wheel works good for sanding them off quickly
I was thinking the same thing or a wire wheel on a dremel
I used wire brush on my dremel to remove 12 years of brake dust buildup. Now it looks like a newly cast alluminium caliper. Best result :)
I should probs make a video, this soloution is way better. Unfortunatley every other tutorial video copied chris fixes idea.
Or an electric sander...
@@edg6779 I'm sure ikut works a lot better, but a Dremel is not a common hand tool.

I like your style. straight forward and down to earth. as well as you make use of simple materials for "get the job done" projects that turn out above par. I used stone grinding bits, and went over the top. it's nice and all but unnecessary.
Kenneth O'Donnell Thanks a lot! That is exactly what I try to do! Glad you liked the video!
ChrisFix hi. how did you put them back? did you have to bleed the brakes and push the pistons back?
ChrisFix Chris what do you think if I sink the whole caliper in a container with rust remover?
I love everything you do man, I'm not great at car stuff but you make it all look very easy. Thanks heaps Chris 👍
Love your videos, I didn’t have the patience to hand sand mine, I just covered everything including the car and sand blasted them, worked perfectly.
Just painted my break calipers and I'm amazing at how easy Chris makes everything look
Good job on the videos as usual Chris 💯. Just as a heads up they have the high heat clear gloss spray I’ve used in the past on top of the high heat black spray. It looks new and shinny! Just a little something I came across in case you wanted to share with your audience
Thanks so much, this is exactly what I needed. I went like one extra level though when painting them and separated mounting bracket and piston. I masked everything I could and used lubricant as masking on piston seal. It turned out amazing! Also I used same 2000 degree paint but flat aluminum three coats
What you mean lubricant
There are only two KZhead channels I view regularly. Yours and Goonzquad. You are the best young man. Patient, smart and a gift for making things and KEEPING things simple. Powder coating uses high temp oven and all rubbers need to be removed from the calipers before they go in the oven 😭 I guess i have to do it your way 😉
Another ChrisFix video that has inspired me to do more mods on my car. I think it’s cool to walk up to my car when it’s parked and to see the painted calipers. I wish I could see them on the freeway too but I’ll have to hope that other drivers notice and appreciate.

I'd have to say it's a useful video. I personally have had plans to do this for a while. And I'm kinda glad I watched. I'm more of a collision repair guy but it's been about 10 years so it's always a little useful brushing up on a few things I kinda let slide.
you have definitely gotten better and more enthusiastic at narrating your videos. I look at this one then I go to the Prius video and I just hear the difference. Good job Chris
Great tips, thanks Chris. I recommend acetone as a wash myself. And as these calipers get real hot,, you want to use always, a high heat paint as Chris does here. And if you want it to shine and last longer...Use a high heat Clear Coat. Or else it will not hold up over time. Unless you believe that a long time is one year. Rattle can paints = Some are okay. Some are not so okay to use in this application. Great video instructional. I paint my chevy car calipers Fire Engine RED, and put logos on them, then clear coat over the logo. Looks PRO>
What clear coat did you use
Definitely gonna add the a quality clear. So primers not necessary?
i don't understand how he moved so fast when sanding. It took me 5 hours to get all the rust off.
Practice!
5 hours? Lol, you got a brake caliper left?
I just started working on my own vehicles, but wire brushes for drills is a nice time saver! $10-20 for a variety of shapes... (everyone should already have a basic drill... seriously!) and you’re larger areas will be done in no time! Those tight corners will need some TLC but that should save you a great deal of time working those larger areas.
If you watch it at 2x speed he does it 2 times faster

Hey ChrisFix, thanks for the immense amount of the best car repair demonstrations on KZhead 🐐🐐🐐quick question, when sanding and not actually removing the brake pads, does the metal residue being sanding cause any damage to the pads? Even if you apply the brake cleaner? Thanks man!

Nice way to do the before and after with the new rotors. Definitely. Makes a drastic difference.
This video was very helpful! Unfortunately, I couldn't find any red caliper paint, so I missed out on the extra 10HP it adds. :P
Chris Addams I am glad it was helpful! Haha, to make up for the lost HP go get some stickers for your car. You can easily get like 5hp per sticker!
Tip if you're taking them off entirely like I did (to sandblast them and get old chipped paint off): use polymorph to fill in all the threads and holes you want to mask. It's a kind of plastic that melts clear in boiling water, can be molded and squeezed into place then cools and hardens white. Squeeze some into threads, and pinch a tag at the top so you've got something to grab later. Now your sandblaster won't damage anything!
I thought maybe you would use a dremmel tool sanding disk, but the speed that you moved your hand was astonishing!
Man you came such a long way from such videos to your current ones. Thank you for all the great content.. and also such ;) thumbs up.
Thx !!!! I painted mine red and they look so good in combination with the superclean video and the video with the tires. The only thing that i did diffrently is that i used a 180 grid sandpaper and then 230 because it had a lot of rust.
Nice work
thnx
Chris is all about details... changing your gloves before cleaning the brakes who does that ? Like it's awesome hahaha
I just recently discovered this channel and I had to instantly subscribe due to the amazing..... Everything!!!
I always use matching spray can caps to prevent the piston grommets from being painted. And always cover the rubber brake lines very carefully!
Just take them off and swap out the lines for beaded. Rubber lines perish and need to be replaced anyway so may as well .
@@matthewdorricott4514 Sure, just in case the lines are in good shape cover up. 👍
And the bleeder valve?
Just cover the valve with tape or use small rubber hoses to cover
Brake clean is one of my favorite liquids. :D Btw, it would be good to cover the bleed valve, piston and the screw that screws the brake line to the caliper.
Chris, I can see the difference in your knowledge from this video to now. You have improved tremendously. I’m not saying this one is bad, but today’s videos are so much better. Keep up the good work and keep getting better.
I used brush on rustolium red. Came out awesome.
I have 1996 GT Mustang that I have for 18 years and I have been wanting to do this, thanks!
Love your videos man! Even knowing how to do a lot of this stuff on my own, your videos are just enjoyable & well made!!
Thanks a lot!
I agree, I love doing these jobs on my own, save me the $. Lord knows a tight budget needs a little help.
Pro Tip: Paint them before they get rusty (if you can)
Was looking for rebuild kits but I drive a Honda Accord not a racecar so I don't want red calipers, looks like I'm gonna have to do this right... Sand blast the 13 years of rust off then paint! Great video!
You should re-do this video with one of the caliper paint kits they make now. I followed this technique and it worked great for about a year then nearly all of the paint just flaked off. I have a new project car so this time I'm going to try one of the epoxy spray paint kits to see if it lasts any longer. thank you for your library of information, I really appreciate it!
How has it worked out?
Need to finish up with primer to seal it in
Your videos are unfailingly fabulous.
Thanks Michael!

out of the 2 million people who watched this, how many of you actually painted your calipers?
I don't even know what calipers are
It made me go to my local pepboys and buy sanding paper, paint, and airplane paint remover which i hope i can just spray on and wait instead of sanding. :P
We do it all the time (saudian people) it's easy and make you car looks great
I haven't, too much work, but it does look nice. Maybe if I paint my car someday I'll do the calipers too
Valkarez just get enamel paint in a can and brush it on. cheap and it last longer than the spray can. also silver makes calipers look factory new.
Amazing DIY. Thanks for sharing. It will help with the brakes job.
So cool to see that chris increased his video quality over the years
Great DIY, but I’d recommend one more step below. I used this to re-do calipers on an old but great condition car of mine. I had removed them to rebuild since the parts are closing in on 40 years. That Rust Oleum high temp paint is a great choice, especially because of the matte color. What I did after cleaning and scrubbing was to use ospho. This product (you can link from amazon if you wish) converts surface rust and better prepares for paint adhesion. The end result is a better bond and longer, better rust resistance in the long run. Great video!!
How does this kid end up with 10,000,000 views for this? If I shot a video of "How to pour a bowl of cereal", do you think that would get as many views?
You can use petroleum jelly to cover any parts where tape won't work, such as the bleeder valve or the piston rubber inside the caliper. wipes off easily after you're done.
Or bluetac. U can get it into every little nook and cranny and just pull it off after you've painted it
ANY petroleum product will damage rubber parts. Don't comment if you have no idea about Engineering.

Man, you just gave me a flashback to when my bro had a 300ZX Twin Turbo and we painted his calipers. After he did the painting in red I went back and grabbed some high-temp silver and used a nail polish brush to paint "NISSAN" on them ("nissan" was actually raised letters on the calipers which neither of us noticed until we went to paint them). Ah the good ole days...
You’re spray painting skills have improved so much since this video.. appreciate you learning for yourself, then teaching all of us. That’s one of the best things anyone can do

I have done a set of hot pink brakes on a white Range Rover Sport 2017 black package. Actually looked really good once done 👍
Hey Chrisfix, I recommend not painting the rotor portion that mates with the wheel. Over time the wheel will vibrate ever so slightly and wear the paint away leaving your wheel to become loose and I have had cars come the shop for this exact reason. Just a heads up love your videos
Everyone was waiting to see you use red paint. What an anticlimax 😤

Remember to do this when you buy new calipers . easier to bench disassemble and paint before final installation.

pinut187 Correct , Thats the best way . I worked for Plymouth for over 35 years , I started off at the Old North Assembly and I’m partial to factory applied finishes , I’m not saying that you can’t do a good job in a shop and you certainly can monitor your own quality control . But you can’t compare to the resources we had in the Assembly and the conditions we paint under .
