If you have an older TI-84 calculator, here is an easy to follow video on how to install the latest (as of 2011) operating system. You get fractions! any base logs, and other goodies that make it work better.

  • Thank you. I did exactly this and it worked. I was wondering why my boyfriend's calculator (exact same model) could do things that mine couldn't. Like going up to copy a previous line. It was annoying at first, but now I needed other versions of log for my classes at uni, so I came here :D Now I can do logbase of any number, and skip up to copy previous equations. And probably a lot more that I haven't discovered yet ;) Updated from 2.40 to 2.55, on TI-84 Plus, 9th of August 2021.

    • You’re welcome. Texas Instruments makes a very long-lasting calculator that isn’t easy to update. I’m glad you found the video and had the initiative to follow through! A newer calculator can cost ~$120, so this is a victory in more than one way.

  • Thank you so much! I was trying last night and all morning to do this until I found this video. And their customer service is closed for the weekend 😩I was scared because it took awhile for my computer to notice the calculator plugged in and at the end of updating it said "Error lost connection" even though I didn't move it. But it's fine apparently it was done even though it lost connection😅 lolTHANKS AGAIN 👌

    • For me, what fixed the "Error lost connection" was keeping the application focused. It seems that if I tab over to chrome or something while the update is happening, it fails ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. It also seemed to get stuck at "verifying OS," after 100%; at that point, my calculator randomly turned off, and what I did was power on the TI and it finished. Very weird but it works for me so it might for you future viewers browsing the comment section. :P

  • I have to remind everybody that DON'T disconnect your calculator from your computer even it shows "Operating System 100%"!! It's still validating and will end up with a big error if you do the opposite. It just happened to me and made me spend more effort to figure it out. Just wait everything disappeared on the screen!

  • It updates to 100% than tells me there was an error. I've tried 4 times already and it still won't go through. Even though on my calculator it shows the process as 100% done.

  • I'm updating my TI-84 Plus. I got the error message and had to restart the process. It kept on having the error, but it was at 100% and the operating system loaded fine. Before I even tried to update the operating system, I used the TI Connect for just TI-84 Plus and backed up my calculator just in case something went sour. Thanks.

  • I don’t have the same cable you have. I have a clear cable that connects to the port on the left (the one that looks like a headphone jack) can I use that to update my calculator? I have a TI 84 plus silver edition.

    • As long as you’re able to plug it into your device with the USB port I’m sure you’ll be fine. If not, you can find an adapter for the TI-83/84 calculator on Amazon ((: I got mine for 7 bucks

    • Just an update, while I could connect the calculator via USB and my computer did acknowledge that it was connected. The newer CE software did not recognize that my calculator was connected. No matter what I tried it would not show up at all. I don’t know if that’s fault of the cable or what. (It’s an official TI product so I know that couldn’t be an issue) But I had to download the older TI Connect software to actually perform the update.

  • If Apple cannot check it for malicious software. go to system preferences, security and privacy, then in general there should be a notification saying that the software was blocked, click open "any way" and follow the onscreen instructions.

  • Everything was going great until I started downloading it, it said it didn't work so I canceled and tried again. Except my calculator was stuck in this state where it said it was waiting for the operating system to install. But on the application even though my calculator is plugged in, it won't show up! And now it seems like my calculator is bricked as it is stuck in this download mode. And I can't find any results about this online at all

    • Just found out how to do it if your still wondering, when you upload the file in the file manager, make sure all files are shown. Default in windows, its set to ti83
