I remember going to a wishing well in 2015, and I said “I wish lightsabers were real” and now its true, wow
Technically according to Star Wars lore, a lightsaber is a loop of plasma that goes out of the hilt and is somehow looped back into the hilt again so once on and humming in the air it doesn't expend energy. This is said to be analogous to a superconducting loop, so energy is only expended when it comes in contact with something solid that sort of breaks the surface of the plasma, which in-universe also explains why the lightsaber can be portable with a relatively small battery pack since it's only when the blade is touched to something substantial that the loop is broken and energy is expended. This also accounts for the lore fact that a Star Wars lightsaber requires extreme strength and dexterity to use because of the associated "gyroscopic effects" caused by the superconducting plasma loop, and therefore can only be effectively wielded by a well-trained Jedi.

This really is eerily familiar. The average technological level in the Star Wars universe was comparable to our own when the first Lightsabers were invented, too. Minus all of the hyperspace capable vessels that had their systems reverse-engineered, of course.

My dad built me a similar device when I was around ten, way back in nineteen eighty seven! It was obviously not as advanced and it was just basically a mini plasma torch, but I was able to dismantle an ‘83 rusted out Toyota Celica in under a few hours, so I loved it!

This would be cool if in the future we could make more traditional lightsabers like the ones in the movies. However, my prediction is that if they ever became like traditional lightsabers, the military would prevent them from becoming public knowledge, and would probably weaponize them. Additionally, the military would probably train elite soldiers capable of wielding them to the point of perfection. In other words, real life Jedi knights would exist. However, this would most likely only occur if these “lightsabers” could replace basic firearms in effectiveness, which I find highly doubtful. Then again, none of this might ever happen, and what I’ve been writing is a result of my habit of excessively reading literary sci-fi novels.
Theres really no reason the military would get much use out of them, let alone have a group of elite trained soldiers using them lol guns would still be more effective in mid ranged personal combat, and even then more and more military weaponry is becoming remote or vehicle based, i.e., drones, planes, carriers, etc. Lightsabers in star wars are only effective because other people use lightsabers or blasters. They really wouldnt serve any sort of military function irl.
think of lightsabers as essentially lightweight flamethrowers
I'd say the most likely use of a lightsaber in todays tactical environment would be a quick breaching tool as well as a last resort melee weapon. It'd never replace guns as you don't have the force, and no matter how much you try your reaction time is not fast enough to block the incoming supersonic bullet.
Not really, they're to dangerous to trust with normal people to sword fight with. People in the military screw around a lot and will never have the telekinetic powers that Jedi use even while fighting just with the lightsaber. So knowing they'll never be able to block bullets there's no reason not to just shoot them.
They would use them for quickly opening locks or cutting through fences and chains, that sort of thing. An offensive lightsaber is a pipe dream

2:11 I used to work in a fabrication shop doing welding and using a plasma cutter, and the first thing you learn is to never look at the plasma. You can literally burn your eyes. I used to wear UV400 sunglasses under my welding helmet when working to prevent accidental exposure to light even. One plasma cutter or welder, even from a distance, can cause damage to unprotected eyes. 1:57 Also, when metal gets so hot that it starts melting like that, it isnt just hot where the cut is going on. I have a feeling that by the time he had cut through that sheet of metal, the entire thing was uncomfortably hot.
