In this episode I visit a researcher who is studying memory by using machine learning and neuroimaging to detect and predict people's brain states. I also travel to Japan to meet with a team working on ways to record the content of peoples’ dreams.

    • First thing I thought of. There are super talented people that lack social skills we'd consider to be basic but in exchange excel at other abilities one could consider to be on super-human level, like the autistic artist Stephen Wiltshire reconstructing an entire city just by flying over it once. How would the results look for them, especially if the neural network would gather more than 2 hours of training data from them? What would the "best end result" look like?

All great scientific breakthroughs probably started with very minor results that grew into something that has changed the world. Seeing him like a kid in a candy store is actually really inspiring.

Like he asks why we can't say bad words (even though we fucking can), but doesn't actually do any research into it. Bad words are bad because humans need a way to emphasize the extreme connotations of a meaning where less harsh words wont suffice. I dont want to explain the whole thing here, but Vsauce explained it really well on an older video of his. GradeAUnderA is just a really fucking bad KZheadr, I don't believe for a second that most of his fanbase aren't just kids and edgy teens.

(The story revolves around the main characters fighting to stop a corrupt entity’s exploitation of those devices to control the masses, but I digress.) I didn’t know that there was actually already some progress being made into this technological capability. Interesting stuff.

    • I think it's more a limitation of the equipment than Michael's mind. It's not hard to picture Obama or Beyoncé with near perfect facial similarity, even after seeing 400 unimportant faces.

    • @@augustoluis6888 You think its easy but they have a control test with the images that they are showing him, and they are all pretty darn close, which means that when you remember a face you don't necessarily picture the exact face in your brain, just what you tell yourself is the exact image.

    • Ah @@ravencrovax, Sam. I came down here for comments like these that explore the study design. I immediately wondered about people with face-blindness (prosopagnosia is a subset of aphantasia). It would be useful to see how the results compare across these photo-blind and photographic extremes. And whether the gist attributes that fire, when thinking of an object/face, are still monitorable, regardless of whether the visual cortex is firing more or not at all. I mean... it's not like aphantasics lack object knowledge.

  • Please please keep this dream research going. Imagine, people waking up, watching your dream, narrating it and sharing it online. Movies and tv shows would plummet. People with similar dreams would share. How many people dreamed of airplanes least night? So interesting...
