Not defending thier action. Lol but I'm not sure you are aware of how fraud can work. Depositing a big fraudulent check isn't unheard of it happens more an more and can go 6-9 days before caught...an can be withdrawn. I see it 2-3 times a month an I'm just part time at a little community bank
This is not an uncommon scenario and a lot of time the person who deposits the $ is innocent. The check the person that received it may be fraudulent.

You can't cash a check for more money than you have in your account.
@@jeffrosati2570 Most banks will make a percentage of the initial deposit available immediately. People deposit a check, then wait a bit and draw out what they can, leaving the bank with a bogus check and them nowhere to be found. When things like that happen, the teller who took the check is usually fired. But the thing is, most banks have the ability to electronically verify funds available. And many banks have policies that checks over a certain amount have to be certified. A Bank Officer could have and SHOULD have been called to verify.

The only conclusion is that they don't think black people can get checks.
She was putting money IN the bank, not robbing it!
Depositing a fake check in a new account is occasionally the start of a scam (where they try to withdraw the funds before the bank figures out it is fake), so you can't blame them too much. However, the usual procedure would be to place a hold on any withdrawal from the account until the check clears, which is what they should have offered for her instead of denying service. PS, a $16k signing bonus for a doctor in private practice is actually on the small side, did they think that the check should have been bigger to be believable?

Exactly. I don’t know if racism or discrimination or whatever, but that is what should’ve happened. Somebody else commented that the Dr. provided several credentials and even phoned other employees to verify who she was. If that’s true, the bank definitely messed up. Should’ve accepted the check and placed it on hold while they take a day to perform validation. There’s nothing wrong with that.
They took a check from me from my home insurance and refused to verify it. I had to involve my insurance adjuster and he had to involve their finance department. Only after he got involved and I complained and told them he was involved and their finance department wanted me to find out exactly why they were refusing to cash is that the senior banker called me, apologized and told me the funds would be released the next day. This was over a week after they took my check and gave me a 00/00/0000 availability date. I'm not gonna lie, I was upset about. I also asked if it was because I was black because my insurance company is a national chain business. They're everywhere in the country. There was no legitimate reason for them to do that. Which delayed my home repairs. And everybody but them was embarrassed.

My parents were deaf and a bank in Canada refused to open an account for them in the 1950s, unless they had a 'responsible' hearing person co-sign for them. This shows that discrimination occurs in all sizes, shapes, colours and time periods. Unfortunately, my parents were not able to sue the bank.
She should sue and not settle.
I had the same thing happen to me with Chase about 28 years ago. My father sent me a bank check, drawn on a Chase bank where he lived. He sent it to me, but the Chase where I live refused to honor it, even when I pointed out that the bank itself held the funds that covered the check. About the same time, I attempted to open a new account at my local Bank of America, and they told me that it would take TWENTY-TWO working days for the check to clear! With a vey composed voice I asked the agent how much interest would accrue on the stated amount on the check while the bank used my money. Her eyes almost fell out of their sockets and gasped that they don't pay interest on checks during the clearing process. I took the check, stood up and said that I wasn't in the business of lending interest-free money, and walked out. I hope that doctor Mitchell prevails.
Why now I only deal with credit unions...
Cool story...you lie very well 😘
I think it’s time Chase’s discriminatory practices are held up to scrutiny. I went through something similar with them 35 years ago, even though I’d been with them for 11 stable years. Absolutely is happening.
There are very many factors at play in the bank doing what they did. The doctor was young the doctor didn't have a transaction history consistent with that type of a deposit and the bank with probably a local bank not familiar with the payer account. Although race was probably a factor I don't believe it was significant enough to weigh in the decision I think the amount of the check was the greatest motivator, and her account activity was the second greatest motivator. She is likely going to be making at least $300,000 a year which means that she's going to be making at least $25,000 a month so six months from now if she had direct deposit along the way they would have no problem in accepting that check.
Those employees should be ashamed of themselves. Should be fired. There are bad apples in every country and company.
yes, especially in democ-rat liberal states
I went to chase to cash a check in Maple Grove MN, I was told that the company has a cash limit on their account and my check was too large and they couldn’t tell me the limit - this happened last month. I don’t recall being asked if I wanted to open a an account. - matter of fact I wasn’t asked I was told to deposit it in like a bank account of my own. In Jan I went to Wells Fargo to cash a check and wasn’t asked if k wants to open an account either. The manager called HR to be on the phone while I cashed my check. They asked for my social security number, birthday and what I did for a living - maybe I should check on these to make sure that was protocol.
I used to work for a bank anything over 10K supposed to be investigated, when she deposits the check the investigation would start, I believe there is a 5-10 day hold on the funds until everything is verified. But their hate is wouldn't allow them to even follow the procedures.
All they had to do was deposit it and hold the majority of funds until they could verify it 1-5 business days.
Doesn’t take 3 -5 days anymore(maybe larger sum)5 figure deposit are clear (from my experience)within 24 hours business days

The employee don't have a problem stealing the customers money but they've a problem depositing a check.
in April 2023, Chase settled without disclosing how much. The young doctor likely paid off her medical school debt in one go.
Good for her. I'd take that settlement and then take my money to a different bank.
All they had to do was put a hold on the check. WTH? So wrong. I’m sorry she had to go through that. Congratulations on becoming a doctor.
Absolutely!
Not as simple as that. The account could be real and the funds in the account could be there as well however you're not going to be able to find out if the signature on the check is correct or if the payee is correct until you send it through the system. Now because the banking system still works on a high level of trust in order to get things to move quickly the check will clear in a few days making the funds available to the payee within days. However if the check is a fraud then it might take weeks to months for it to be discovered. Your bank doesn't check your signature every single time you write a check to somebody and they certainly don't know who you writing it to. It isn't until you get the check that you see it wasn't a check that you wrote and it didn't go to somebody that you know. That could be a month or two down the line. Some people recognize the large sum that wrongly leaves their account, some people reconcile their actual checks, and some never see the loss. Like I said it could take weeks to months for it to be found reconciled and at that point the bank the bank tries to reverse the funds which means that the person who deposited the check will end up with a negative balance if they don't have that kind of money in the account to cover it. And at that point the responsibility for the money is on the bank that accepted the check. So now you see why Chase didn't want to accept such a large check on an account that didn't have that kind of transaction history. They simply didn't want to get stuck just in case the check was a fraud. The scam that I outlined above is run every single day with people on eBay and especially Craigslist.
Yep and now her 'bonus' will be anywhere from $500k to $1millions dollars, if she wins her lawsuit.
Also the bank could have called the number on the check to verify. The routing number will also tell you which bank its being pulled from which should match whats printed on the check. There are also water marks on the check to verify it's on authorized paper....jeez, I could be a teller.
They WANTED to traumatize her. THAT WAS THE WHOLE POINT!

Likely not. Those attorneys (after taking their 33%) will only coordinate with Chase’s legal team to prove discrimination mainly because it received media coverage. Then, they would try to mediate and settle with her for pennies. If she doesn’t take a settlement, she will be tied up for months and hopefully not years trying to get a Chase penny. That's what so many of these people who are criticizing the doctor on here haven't considered. There are safeguards in place to protect banks against fraud, but Chase didn't bother to use any of them.
All domestic checks clear in one day.
Something like this happened to me about 10 years ago. I was DEPOSITING money and they asked for my ID!!!! They check and my VISA card had my name on it. I thought it was strange so I forked over my license. I went to a different branch the next week and handed my license and the teller asked me why? I told her what happened the previous week and she became visible mad. I didn't pursue more information but now I know what was going on. She told me "you don't give your licenses to deposit money." 😒
The bank took her happy moment away? That's worth $1M? That's punitive. You have them fire the employee that should have known better, and they upgrade your account for free. I thought when the check was processed, if it is invalid, they would reverse the deposit and probably penalize the account holder. No need to scrutinize the individual making the deposit.
As a banker for over 20 years...if they felt like the check was fraudulent all they had to do was place a Reg CC hold and allow the check to clear. (That's only one if many options) I typed my comment before listening to the entire video (confirmed)
Right, this wasn't a concerned bank teller. It was a bank teller furious that a black woman was depositing $16,000 at once. And they, a superior white person, would be stuck as a bank teller all their life. It's jealousy and anger. They feel they're entitled to the med degree, the respect, the money... so they're lashing out at this woman for succeeding.
Change comes when we hold them financially accountable for the mental and emotional trauma inflicted!!!

True The sad thing is that although they may have been historically and systemically racist and they may harbor some of those same prejudices today I do not believe it was a material part of what went on here. If everyone in that bank look like her she might have gotten the same end result in terms of a rejected deposit however she probably would have gotten treated properly meaning they would have explained to her why they would not accept the check to deposit.
@@TruckTaxiMoveIt The fact they rejected it after it was verified is the issue. I would probably have questioned it myself no matter who would have brought it in. It would save both of us from the embarrassment. As far as I am aware they do have a fraud dept don’t they.
1. If anything goes wrong with a bank transaction, you want to talk to "an officer of the bank." An "officer of the bank" can make a decision and bind the bank. 2. I prefer credit unions and smaller banks. If you are active in the community (Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, etc.), you may actually know the people behind the counter. I am an attorney who handles probate and conservatorships. Often, I need a bank that will handle accounts where all executors or conservators need to sign the checks. Only a few banks will handle that type of account. I have a list of 7 in the Los Angeles, Orange County, California area.
Excellent advice
Doctor listen to what I’m about to tell you. Anytime a bank don’t take your check. Especially that large. You go to a completely new bank and open a new account. And once you’re comfortable with that and it clears at the new bank did you go back to the bank they denied you the request. Hopefully you get the same teller. And tell her you want to withdraw all your money and close your account.
It’s bizarre that the employees at bank of such size with resources at their disposal cannot verify the integrity of a check on a timely manner. Moreover, it’s common practice and knowledge that the amount of a deposited check cannot be made available for withdrawal for at least 3 business days as the so-called float can be cleared. In short, there is absolutely no need for this to happen to this customer. Yet, it did. This begs the question of there is some extra unsavory thing going here. The fact that she is Black, trying to do banking in an industry that has shown again and again to discriminate against them, raises the real possibility that racial discrimination and bias is afoot here. Yes, lady, sue the bank. Force its hand through discovery process to air its dirty laundry.
This is exceptionally disheartening. I hope that Dr Mitchel-Stewart is able to recieve all of what her lawsuit is asking for.
Disheartening.?.One could have a multi million dollar income just seeking out racism and filing lawsuits. There's more then one way to get reoperations!.
I assure if a judge sides with her the attorney will get at least 70% seems like a pointless lawsuit to me.
@@wokvonrockstein Money aside, I cannot imagine what it is like to be denied the same access to services that my family and I experience. In my early adult years and while on welfare, no bank batted an eye when I would walk in looking like a someone without any means and they cashed my check. No one ought to experience being denied what most do not even give any through to as we are not impeded by another's hate nor their ignorance.
@@davidradzik1379 From what I can understand, it may be that what is important for Dr Mitchel-Stewart is the principle of it. Mind you, I cannot read minds. I just hope that Dr Mitchel-Stewart is able to achieve her goals whatever these may be.

I too was racially profiled by Chase and was harassed by the workers there. That was 13.5 years ago and it still bothers me. I wrote a letter to the District Manager of the east coat to arrange a meeting with him to review the video surveillance tape as to why they did what they did to me. They said no!!! These are people whom may be telling their workers. or communicate in some way to profile their customers. Sad.
Dr Mitchell-Stewart is just one of many. I wouldn’t look for an apology, suing and winning would be good for me. People are jealous, racist and can’t stand to see us win. The amount of the check was the issue. It was more than what those tellers get in 3-4 months. Smh I pray she gets all or even more than a mil
Lisa Autry- You're exactly correct in saying that they are jealous of our accomplishments especially as it concerns our involvement in building this so-called nation United States. They also are fully aware of the fact that We are The True Chosen People of our Creator (Deuteronomy 28). That same Creator has said that He will get retribution for His Inheritance i.e. us (Ezekiel 35). All Praises to Sonini Nanini our Mighty King!! My People return back to His Laws (Exodus 20). All He ever wanted was us!!!
That the check was so much or how the check looked and the experience of the teller could all play into this without it having to do with race. What if the Dr said can I deposit a $100 check? If she still got shot down the story becomes different.16k screwup would get a teller fired.

Every African American who banks at Chase should find another bank to handle their business. Just as Chase made it clear to Dr. Mitchel-Steward they had the right to deny her service, we, as customers also have the privilege to deny them the right to handle our money. Money is the language that Chase understands. Chase's statement means they can deny you service based on your color, and do not have to tell you anything. Wake up folks.
You are absolutely correct! This story needs to get some National News Coverage. And people like Rev. Al Sharpton, Rev. Jackson, and some of the other prominent voices in the Black Community need to request that all Black People who bank with Chase remove their Money and do business somewhere else!!

Sue their ass. Get as much money as you can. Tell them you have post traumatic syndrome and shake every time you see a bank. Get all your money because the people at that bank were disgusting. Make them give you a public apology. Put it in the newspaper. They are a bank why would they have an account for a customer then refuse them service. What type of foolishness is that? I think she felt like she was racially discriminated against however I don't believe that she was materially racially discriminated against. If she had $30,000 in that account when she went to the bank to make that deposit they wouldn't blink an eye -- they would accept it without question or pause and even thank her for her deposit.

Um, Yes they do. It's been there for over 60 years. It's called , "pick up the phone and call the check issuer to verify."
They absolutely do they just didn't want to.

Had a similar issue with Compass bank where they would constantly put 10 day holds on my checks that came from my software consulting clients back in the early 2000s when I was in my 20s. Switched banks after about the 3 time of that and after hearing older colleagues with more experience (read charged higher rates) and did not look like me did not have the same issue.
From what I’ve gleaned from these type of videos, her big mistake was treating JP Morgan as a ‘reputable’ bank. 😂
I remember depositing a large check to my bank, not CHASE. They accepted it, made $1,000 available right away, the half of the amount available after five days, then the rest was available after 7 days. The bank was making sure that it was a real check, but never asked me questions, like what I did for a living, etc.

Banks has procedures for checking out checks with large amounts. Just follow the damn procedure. Sue the hell out of them.
We are living in a world where following 'the procedure' is no longer normal🤦🏽♀️
I know the feeling. I'm a business owner. I get large checks from several large companies with name recognition. I got tired of the stupid looks and questions. So I only deposit my checks in the atm or mobile banking. My bank allows 100k per month in mobile deposits. After that I use the atm.
The bank is required by law to ask questions about any transaction of 10k or more. I bought a used car for like 9k (need a cashier check from my bank) and my bank insulted me and asked you can't buy a car for 9k. You going to be doing a whole bunch of repairs and fixing that car up? They could of refused to give me a 9k cashier check...i don't get a million dollars because the bank manager made me feel like shit i was buying a used car...
I experienced the same thing with a teller at a Chase Bank and she wouldn't cash my work check. Plus I had the funds in my account to cover it if she was that worried. I wrote a very detailed review about that location, management never responded to me. I went to another location and was treated much better. Sometimes the banks really need to look and train their workers properly. I used to work for a different bank sometime ago and we were given training on how to properly verify a check and we could deposit and get verification by escalating if necessary too. They would tell us what questions to ask and everything. But what you cant change is personal bias. Sad this successful doctor had to go through this. I hope she wins the case and the bank can improve and do better.
I'm in accounting at my job and we will not as a matter of policy ever issue a sign-on bonus as a live check for exactly this reason. It's often a younger person new to the area trying to open an account with just the check, and banks give them the runaround. So we require a savings or checking account to receive your sign-on bonus and HR puts that in the offer letter so they can't claim they didn't agree to it. We give information on local credit unions to new employees relocating to the area where you can open an account with as little as $10.
I’m currently living in Texas and I have experienced racism at Chase Bank myself!!!! So I’m not surprised. 🙄
Chase has BEEN doing this. Remember the NFL player they denied opening a high end account a few years ago? Y'all know they got their start by using our ancestors as stocks and bonds, right? They insured slaves as property. They've always been wicked and discriminatory.

The bank tellers actions were deliberate. Given these tellers the unrestrained power to refuse service to anyone with justification. They wanted to humiliate this young doctor...without justification.
I am really disappointed, it must be a slow news day. This incident happens frequently with banks. It is their prerogative to ask questions and to verify certain deposits especially when it is large amount. There have been times when chase would call us just to make sure we authorized a purchase more than $2,000.

THAT MOMENT of THAT FEELING when you realize that you are being penalized, dismissed, discredited for reasons that are imaginary at best. The narrative that has been repeated about women who look like the doctor has been amplified by the "discomfort" of the tellers, to the point where chase has just lost any consideration for MY business as an artist. THAT FEELING of being on the receiving end of racism for invalid false reasons is not a good one for anyone to have. We have two children about the age of the doctor who are echoing that same things I endured as a photojournalist in the capitol city of the Show Me state back in the 80s. The first time it hits you it is a shock. Living with it day after day like our grandparents did, simply can no longer be tolerated. As a light sculptor from the Show Me state thank you young journalists for the work you do before the unblinking eye of the camera! Thank you for sharing Dr. Mitchell-Stewart's story!!!! In August of 2019 I was fired because I was black and had a disability. There are no words to adequately describe the rage and fury I felt internally, after being invited to return to the job after an aneurysm in 2017. THAT FEELING is a concussive rage that blinds all thoughts of logical reason that is intended to protect the Self. THAT FEELING is also the suffocating poison despair choked the breathing light from the voice of the young shiny Soul of Ms. Chelsie Kryst. The behavior I endured in the work place in 2019 should have been over long before the 1980s, but I lost a job at a newspaper due to the poor team building skills of those who try to do less than substandard in the work place. All of you who have not had THAT FEELING as an employee or a customer, consider yourselves lucky. Please encourage those around you to give you a heads-up about who says what when people who look like you are not in the room. That is what you can do to help out young people who look like us. Let the people around you know they should encourage the people who are "uncomfortable" serving people at work based on skin tone. We know a standard of excellence on our worst days at work that we know now that 40% could never do as an imagined goal in their dreams, especially when it comes to manners and how we behave in the workplace and the job we agreed to do. THAT FEELING angered me so much, it was all I could do not to act upon things frowned upon in courts of law. The behavior was so blatant, I negotiated the settlement on my own with a clip in my brain. The exacerbated PTSD of the fury and despair is still a problem two years later. I hope she wins. Texas is dangerous these days. At the very least, those tellers should have been fired on the spot. The job of everyone at a bank is to take money when it walks through the door!!!!! Find me one black person who works at a bank who would not get fired for failing to take money when it comes through the door, and I will show you a child who must have attended one of the schools the Obama girls went to. In the land of Josh Hawley, it is hard for this self employed light sculptor. Please keep doing your work.

Any update on this story?
40 years ago, you walked into a bank opened a new account deposited a cheque and waited 7 days to clear, what they never told you was it was cleared over night but they keep it for 7 days in the banks account where it gains 7 days of free interest for the bank alone. Things started to change as staff left the banks and got different jobs and those in the know would tell about how the banks were using peoples money in the 7 day hold. In the 90’s it went from a 7 day hold to a 4 day hold and then only 24 hours. Electronic banking is now seconds. Banks were never happy at losing those hold days of freely playing with peoples money in that timeframe.
Unfortunately this has also lead to a lot of scams, as the check "clearing" no longer means it can't bounce. It's a common scam for the scammer to send money and then ask for part of it back for whatever reason. The person then pays them back, thinking they're safe as it's less than they were paid, only to gave the original check bounce. Check out the article "Don’t bank on a “cleared” check" on the FTC's website.
They could have just put a “hold” on the check for a couple of days if they thought it was fake, among others steps..
Can't you GET it!???? These people hated her for being a BLACK, beautiful, successful, Doctor!
@@TruckTaxiMoveIt This make no sense, why cant they check signature on every check? Check payment is not supposed to be the same day (especially when its not the account owner depositing into another account). Also, there better ways to reject a check
@@TruckTaxiMoveIt Why was her paycheck one with a manual signature? Was it or are you guessing? Normally, paychecks are automated with preprinted signatures. Was her check different than other paychecks from other people at her employer? If they verified her identity, they could have still taken the check, held it and called the employer to verify the next day (if she was depositing the check outside of her employer’s payroll office business hours). If the check was “fake,” they could then call the police to report it and they would not have lost the money. They just assumed it was fake and made no real effort to verify it.
How many times does this bank chain be held accountable? This happens all the time with JP Chase.
I understand opening a new account and depositing over $10k people ask questions, but that teller could make one phone call to verify but didn’t

shes been humiliated and the action of that bank will remain with her forever. ive been banking with chase for nearly thirty years ive chosen to close my accounts
Something doesn't add up. I wonder if the reporter was getting all the details correct at the beginning of this segment. If, as reported, Dr. Mitchell-Stewart was using the $16,000 check to open a new account, then that transaction would have been handled by a higher-level bank employee iinstead of a teller. And that person would have explained that standard operating procedure is to put a hold on any amount that's used to open a new account. That's just standard everywhere. If, however, the account was already established, and Dr. Mitchell-Stewart was attempting to deposit the $16,000 check, the teller should have told her that standard procedure is that funds from the check would not be available until the check cleared the bank against which it was drawn. Refusing to even *accept* the check was outrageous, and certainly not Chase's standard M.O. The fact that *two* people behind the counter refused the check signals something very, very wrong at that branch. An apology alone from Chase doesn't cut it. She's right to sue....but I think $1million may be over-reach in this instance, unless the majority of the award is for punitive damages. There are people who are physically injured (sometimes permanently) from professional malpractice/misconduct by police officers and surgeons, and their victims don't get that size of an award.
Punitive damages are meant to punish, discourage malevolent behavior and consequently are calculated with respect to the net worth of the defendant. For Chase, $1 million is a pittance. And, yes, to open a new bank account these days takes hours. Forms, questions, 20 pieces of ID, etc. Not handled by a teller, but a "financial consultant" who tries to sell more financial services.
I had this happen in Detroit at Bank of America reversed, I am white and tried to deposit my paycheck in a black run branch. The same branch I had opened my account with and had done business with for years, they KNEW me by first name basis. When I complained to the district manager things changed in a hurry, I was even offered a $100 dollar credit. I declined it and took my business and money elsewhere.
I would love to be on the jury. Shameful behavior!
