The W12 Engine - The Science EXPLAINED
When you think of Volkswagen you probably think of Jettas, or Golfs, maybe even the punch buggy. What you DON'T think of is HUGE POWER or extreme luxury. I mean, their name literally translates to “people’s car”. So why and how then did they create one of the most bonkers, highly sophisticated, amazing sounding “luxury” engines of all time? Today we’re diving into the incredible engineering of one of the coolest, most bizarre engines ever made - the W12. And we also find out exactly how the famous VW VR6 is involved in all of this!

>”I have a degree in mechanical engineering” >”what’s an acute angle again?”
Looks like my engineer friends missing easy calculations when trying to split the bill in the bar
Typical engineer
bro they can't distinguish between π and 3, of-course he doesn't know what an acute angle is
Its cute
As a junior mechanical engineer, I've never used acute or obtuse to describe a triangle. I just focus on calculating or utilizing its angle. So, it's not surprising that he would not remember, if he hardly ever used it.
Hey there, former VW mechanic here. I'd like to add a few things to this video. While the D. Napier & Son Engine is a W (also known as Y) engine, the VW's Engine is not really a W Engine. Strictly Speaking it's a "V V R" engine. The old W Engine had 3 seperate cylinder banks compared to the VWs 2 double banks. (2:00) Also I think that the cost of the VR design was rather high due to large amounts of Research and Developement that was needed aswell as the twisted crankshaft and all the unique parts that you couldn't ever hope to use on a "standard" V6 or R6 (I6) engine. (5:30) Next up from what I remember about the VR6 intakes, they don't actually have different length intakes and if they had it would just be short and long rather than an individual length for every cylinder. (around 6:30) Just as a sidenote: timing chains are always a weak link in Volkswagen engines and head gaskets aren't particularly long living either. (6:50) After that I have to admit that I've never heard the term "WR", VW just calles it "W". Furthermore while the 444 (SAE) HP were something, but by the early 2000s the Phaetons and Touaregs were also available with a V10 TDI (in Europe), which may not quite have the 444bhp, but a much higher torque as they are diesels. (9:40) Having driven both of them, I'd much prefer the V10 Diesel over the W12 Petrol engine, but that may differ in the US. Hope that helps people, sorry if I remember anything wrong. Sayonara! Shadow
Loved your comment! Thanks for sharing it :-)
The V10 TDI Touaregs were in the US as well. they are few and far between nowadays and still pull a high price. I cant wait to get one.
In croatia we have golfs more than all civics and mustangs together in US, two of my neighbours have Golf 2's. One of them has a vr6 swapped into it and It sounds like crap tbh, but the other one is trying to replicate it with its diesel engene and It sounds like a tractor and well riced civic had a baby. The worst fartcan ever. And yes, they are reving them in 1am. Sorry for bad english.
Thank you for the insight! It's always fascinating to hear stories like this one.
those v10 diesels are monsters. you can get v10 touaregs for like 5k here where i live

The letter "u" was written as "v" in Latin and Middle English scripts up until the late 1600s. Thus "w" is double-u, from when u was written as v.
you learn something new everyday
If the u was written as v what was v written as?
@@TheDarkToes u and v were originally the same letter and you would have to guess whether you had to pronounce it as a u or v sound based on context
Or in cursive, they are very similar in design, as the upper case W is just two U’s put side by side.
In French it's still "Double V". Maybe the only thing the French got right. That and the Bugatti Chiron.

Also, not knowing Piech's name is kinda like an artist not knowing Vincent van Gogh or Jackson Pollock. Dude was a grandson of Ferdinand Porsche, and he single-handedly championed the Veyron to production. Otherwise it was a decent breakdown of the mechanics.

Old English the “v” was a “u”. Like the clothing company RVCA is pronounced “Ruca” which means clothes in Greek.
Huh
I didn't expect to learn this, but I just did. Thank you.
Gary Roberts didn’t know that about RVCA until now. cool.
I can't believe I just learnt something in lockdown lol
It was actually from Latin. The Romans used "w", "v" and "u" interchangably. English printers started using "u" in the late 1600s.
Jeremy: Do you know what VR6 stands for? Me: a engine who likes to throw rods and pistons vertically.

Just a couple of things to point out. Although designed in the 90s it wasn't available to the market until the Phaeton in 2004, and it had 414bhp. The 444bhp variant only appeared a few years later in the GP1 (late 2007 generation). The race car is actually called the Nardo W12 Coupe, and it broke every single speed record of the race at 204mph average speed over 24 hours.

I feel like the B5 generation Passat is severely underrated, it came in 1.8T, 1.9TDI, 2.3 VR5, 2.8 VR6 and 4.0 W8 form and had a good aftermarket. Not to mention it's gotta be one of the nicest looking cars to come out of the early 2000s
@@v6tex, I've owned 3 B5.5 wagons, all with 2.0 TDIs. Loved them all. The interior is pretty simple, easy to use controls, super comfortable seats, very generous head room, which I personally appreciate being long in the torso. The chassis itself transmits less road noise than many of VW's newer offerings and the engine noise was pretty quiet at speed as well. Very comfortable and quiet highway cruisers. Great for long trips. The handling is pretty good, though lacking in feedback thanks to that Audi virtual steering axis suspension. Need to get myself back into one. I find them much more comfortable than the 2014 Passat I have now. As for engine options, unfortunately here in the U.S. we only got 1.8 turbos, 2.8 V6s, 4.0 W8 and the 2.0 TDI (BHW code, came automatic transmission only and was sold here for only 2 model years). I miss the comfort of being in one of those. Outstanding car just from a comfort and noise standpoint alone.
