Honda Motor Co. made its name selling obsessively-engineered economy cars, but that’s only part of the story. Honda dreamed of racing victory. Then they made it happen. And then they brought what they’d learned to their road cars under an iconic red “R”. Join James Pumphrey as he meets the dreamers behind the NSX-R, the Civic Type R, and the Integra that changed the world’s perception of front-wheel-drive forever. This is the hidden history of Japan’s most influential badge, Honda Type R!
Huge thanks to Carl Pulley and all the fine folks at Acura, American Honda, Honda UK, and Honda Japan, we literally couldn’t have done this without you.
Props to Ryan Hailey for editing this episode. He's a really hilarious dude with the best “horse-in-space” voice in the biz. Here's a link to his channel: / ryansshorts

We had all of the chassis and parts we could ever want, dynos and test tracks. We even had an NSX for the employees to take home for the weekends when they made quality improvement goals. Oh to be working for Soichiro's company again.

    • @@RTSRAZORBACK It was the same in the 90s with their bikes, they built amazing 250 and 400cc bikes for the domestic market that were much higher spec than the 600s the rest of the world got. we used to squeeze a few bikes in the containers bring cars back from Japan. New Zealand drives on the Left, same as Japan so JDM imports are really popular, My Father and Uncle ran a import business for 20 years, from the late 80s to early 2000s, buying Japanese 2nd hand cars in Japan and bringing them into New Zealand for the 2nd hand dealers. They were far better than the "taxi pack" ones sold new here. 80% were family cars like Corollas and Accords etc, but later, once they realised sporty cars were not only selling but made good profit, they started buying EVOs, VR4 Gallants, WRX STI's, Pulsar GTi-R's, RX-7s the odd GTR Skyline. And there was so much to choose from! You could take your pick. I bought a Nissan Pulsar GTi-R on a buying trip with my Uncle, it was one the best car ive owned, only 20,000 Km and loaded with Japanese tuning house goodies.

    • Put a turbo on a Dodge Hellcat and it's almost undrivable. Sure it goes even faster in a straight line, but makes it super hard getting back on the gas after a tight corner. Which isn't a thing that Dodge cars do well to begin with. It's a big lead sled, while a lightweight turbocharged car can spank the shit out of a Dodge.
