  • This Godzilla definitely feels the most grounded out of them all. His movements are weighted and slow, showing that he is in fact this gigantic beast of a creature taking a step upon the earth. I can feel the sheer height and power he exudes every time he takes a step. The way the camera is angled from near the ground through the humans perspectives makes me feel like i’m standing amongst them and watching Godzilla in all his glory. Through the school bus, with the soldiers, through the view of an apartment complex, etc. They do it a lot and it sells the realism really well. He’s always taking up most of the screen and we rarely ever see his full body in a single shot, showing us just how big he is! Great filmmaking!

    • This is why, this is still my favorite film of the monsterverse (although in terms of just pure fan service, Godzilla King of the Monsters is user there for me) ..I love all the monsterverse films so far but 2014 has this sort of deliberateness in its direction that I can appreciate..but hard to replicate again

    • In my opinion, Shin Godzilla did a slightly better job with how a giant creature like him would move. Either way it's a movie and a creature like Godzilla is physically impossible to exist in the real world.

    • @@trshb1n276 I agree, godzilla is a large animal that couldn't and wouldn't exist in our world so him being slow isn't the definitive way for him to move. Shin gojira moved sorta fast when it needed to but was also slow at the same time

  • Well I now realize that shrouding godzilla in mist, putting ominous music, and maintaining the dark ambiance really makes it feel like Godzilla is a true colossal titan that tramples all beneath it as it hunts. In the more recent movies, he just kinda feels like an action figure that I use to pretend was fighting in a block city.

  • 2:56 has to probably be one of my favorite Godzilla scenes. It takes almost a horror route showing only glimpses of him with the flashes of light and the piano stabs. The way the tail looms over and makes you realize that from a human perspective, you are nothing to this kaiju. The framing is incredible and would make such a good poster. I don’t think we’re going to see a style like this in the monsterverse movies for the forseeable future so I’m going to enjoy this one here, unless that Godzilla analog horror stuff gets close to this.

  • Honestly godzilla 2014 was the better out of all the legendary movies just because it truly shows the sheer scale size of the monsters unlike 2019 and 2021 it shows how massive and heavy they were especially godzilla with the way he walked and the way the mutos walked and moved. And when they showed it from a humans perspective when he appears from the fog with a swish of his tail and began walking towards the FM muto ready to fight. This specific legendary movie will always hold a special place in my heart for the way they made it

  • I really enjoyed this film. I saw it twice in the theater, bought the video, and even bought the soundtrack. I thought the soundtrack was great, especially the theme for the opening, and loved as to how it paid homage to the original 1954 film score by Akira Ifukube. Some people I know did not like the film, in part because of too little Godzilla on screen time. I too would have enjoyed more on screen Godzilla, but I loved the MUTO's as well, as they reminded me of Rodan (at least the one that flew). The first time you see Godzilla in full as the camera slowly pans up when he's at the airfield in Hawaii, and you see his head and hear is roar, I got chills, and a huge smile came across my face. I felt like a kid watching all the great horror movies on TV, Chiller Theater, etc. That scene alone was worth the price of admission. Godzilla is the greatest monster of all time!

  • Although Godzilla had a relatively low screen time in this film, I definitely much prefer the overall tone and sense of scale from this film over any other in the monster-verse since. Any scene with Godzilla or the other monsters felt mysterious, terrifying, and with a sense of awesome scale that made you as a human feel helpless in the moment. I feel like the last couple movies there’s just too much “ooh look 2 monsters fighting let’s check it out” and it just doesn’t feel real or terrifyingly large as it definitely would be in the real world. Personally I’d like to see more “oh my god what do we do... what can we do?” And less “oooh monsters cool, fight fight, Godzilla fun”

    • The problem wasn't the lack of Godzilla, but the lack of character. Jaws and Jurassic Park had engaging characters that made us care and root for them, we wanted to see them get through it. The characters in this were not engaging enough to warrant the audience's attention. But the action pieces were awesome enough that it harshly contrasts with the lack of emotional investment, making people crave more monster action.

  • Watching this just makes me nostalgic for when the Monster Verse treated Kong and Godzilla like they were giant beasts whos movement was so grand and weighty it would cause the ground to shake or shift the ocean level and cause a flood. The cinematography is shot very much from a perspective as if a human was watching the events unfold, which makes us feel more attached. Having seen so much footage of GxK its just like if someone was playing with action figures in a giant CGI shit show. Minus One also understood the necessity of grounding Godzilla, and the fact the human scenes were actually very emotional and well acted, makes it peak Godzilla. Kind of a old man yelling at cloud type comment but Godzilla can be so much more then big lizard fight big monster, and it feels like almost every time American filmmakers get their hands on the Lizard, they just fail to understand him. Gareth Edwards understood him in this movie despite the unfortunate lack of Godzilla.
