Learning How to Sail (again)

We set sail for what we thought would be a leisurely 250 nm sail from Subic to the northern part of Palawan. How naïve! Mother nature had a full mix of wind and waves in store for us. It felt like we were learning how to sail all over again.

WE’RE JASON AND NIKKI WYNN. A couple of explorers, modern-day documentarians, and cultivators of curiosity.
We’ve been chasing our curiosity around the world on wheels and keels since 2011. Why? Because curiosity is the key to unlocking life. It pushes us outside our comfort zone, softens our assumptions, and helps us embrace the great unknown. The more we let our curiosity lead the way, the more we discover about ourselves and the world around us.
Things We're Most Curious About:
GETTING OFF-GRID
Our home is also our transportation and we spend weeks away from civilization and sometimes land. So self-reliance and sustainable living are a must. We've learned heaps about renewable energy, managing waste, creating safe drinking water and foraging for food. We carefully manage our resources and we’re always looking for new and better ways to do so.
TALKING TO STRANGERS
People are busy (even on remote islands) and travelers are a dime a dozen. It takes time to talk to strangers, and even more time to have a real connection. Going the extra mile to get to know someone is a commitment.
Which is why these are our most treasured experiences. Setting off into the world with curiosity as our guide and nature as our compass. We talk to strangers and accept hospitality without fear or reservations. Both giving and receiving.
ALTERNATIVE LIVING
These are people who are doing things differently. Forgoing the mainstream, seeking freedom and living on the margins. Creative, unique and inspiring people who challenge our ideas of home and community.
Our journey is ever-evolving but the mission remains the same: #CultivateCuriosity

  • Love this sail! I’m sorry you hurt your finger Jason. As a wound care nurse I can say, flushing with lots of water is good but don’t be afraid of using soap and water and then the alcohol. You also might want to stock a tube of slow release iodine ointment (I promise it won’t sting). It’s much more effective than the usual ointment that everyone uses and you will only have to change your bandage every two to three days. Sorry if this is an unwelcome suggestion. ❤❤

So glad I stumbled over it ( like a lot of things 🤣) which led me to enjoying it even more finding it a very exciting episode. Great explanations of how Curiosity reacts to the waves and how you constantly changed from sail to sail and electric motor. When Jason 'lost' the mooring line 😲 I immediately said to myself "oops, somethings going to smart" as I've seen similar happen before. Great that both of you admit part blame so nicely, one of the wonderfull side's of your relationship with each other. The diving was the icing on the cake 🤗 , now happy and jealous 😉

  • I had a full sensory experience as Jason cleaned his finger (poor finger). I’m on my balcony, it’s midnight. Depending upon the wind direction and whenever my neighbours use their bathroom extraction fan, I get vague scents wafting past. Usually it’s some scented shower soap/hair products. Other times it’s the obvious smell of toothpaste and mouthwash. But tonight, tonight was different. Tonight was a first. As Jason sprayed the antiseptic onto his fingernail, the distinctive smell of antiseptic reached my nose. I realise now how totally engrossed I was in your video, because watching you spray your finger (poor finger) and immediately smelling antiseptic made total sense to my brain. I even thought to myself - ouch, that smells like the stuff that REALLY stings, followed by Jason reacting to his finger (poor finger) stinging. A mere moment later I was laughing out aloud at what had just happened. True smell’o’vision. Thanks for sharing this adventure with me. I really appreciate you both simply for taking the time. Take care of yourselves and your poor finger. 🙂🐿🌈❤️ 33.8685° S, 151.2198° E

  • If you hurt a nail and its still attached, just push the nail HARD to the finger and youll keep the nail. For at least 15 min, then tie it hard with anythig, even gorilla tape will do. Just dont let blood go there and it will keep attached. Same with teeth, just let it be if it gets knocked a bit. The gum will grow new threads. Thats a pro tip from an accident-prown woman who never looses nails any longer. /Catta from Sweden

Many people would get upset in that scenario. Instead they covered it for us to see and she acknowledged. What an amazing dynamic and example for us all. • I have watched you intermittently for over 2 yrs. Resume and lost my dad and my husband on the same day, then my uncle 2 weeks later, and I haven't worked in 2 years due to injury illness post covid as an ICU we're in. Blah blah blah we all have a problem. My point is every time I watch you I feel like I'm where you are and it gets me out of this dungeon of a bedroom for a bit. So thank you. I've never been on a boat like that and I live in South Florida and grew up in Southern California 😅 brings me ❤joy to watch you on the sea... every ending is a new beginning

  • Hello Wynns! I was just thinking that we’ve watched you guys now for like idk, 4 years or more, and have enjoyed your content all the time. So happy you have your new boat and working through the bugs and gaining trust and familiarity with her. As I said long ago, that my wife and I always had a goal of retiring on a 42’ ketch and getting lost in the Caribbean but life sometimes changes course and brings us to unexpected ports and we find other happiness. I have two grown kids now with their own families and our grandkids!!! We also have two of our own who is in his senior year of HS and my baby girl is a sophomore. They keep us way busy with sports and top grades, etc, and we are still working. I just wanted to tell you both how much we love and adore you. You both are always positive, cheerful, no drama, no politics, but rather just a happy family living your dream. We so enjoy living vicariously through you, so thank you for all of your hard unending work of editing, creating and sharing your journeys. Stay safe, and blessed and we are always with you!

  • You think in the early part of the video where you're experiencing the "wind keep changing," I'm betting that your newer and lighter performance boat is building up that apparent wind, and the AWA starts moving in front of you. Probably will take some getting used to! Even on our Lagoon 440, in 12 kts TWS at a 80 degree TWA, we can VERY QUICKLY hit 18-19kts AWS and 45AWA. Then we crash into some big wave and slow down. My first thought is always "man, the wind is shifty today!" Only to eventually realize what is actually happening. Constantly trimming and pumping the sails! It's fun, until it starts to get rough! Enjoy the new boat! - SV Saguaro

  • OMG, you made it to Apo Reef!!! That's an amazing place! We stayed overnight (10 years ago it had a permanent military/warden presence) and it was tough to get there from land (a local family adopted us and helped us). ❤❤❤

  • It's so wonderful to see you two sailing and exploring once again. Nikki, your sail design was brilliant. Jason, trust your nail decides to stay attached. The smiles and happiness show it all. And OMG the reef was spectacular. My heart swells that you are at it again and bringing the beauty and reality to us so that we may share in the wonder of it all. 💞

  • “You live and you learn and you get really good injuries while you’re at it!” Take care you two! Gloves Jason, next time! Cuts from barnacles on slime lines can get nasty.. love watching your films. You would smile through a hurricane and laugh through a storm 😂 Which makes me that remember that quote. Life is not about trying to avoid storms. It’s about learning to dance in the rain. This seems to be how you live your lives. Bravo. X

I so very much enjoy your videos and the time just flies by. Looking forward to all the new adventures on the new boat. Over/Under 20 sundowners on video for the year? Cheers 🍻
