  • Why did I just spend six years watching a man build a boat? I don’t care about boats, dislike sailing, and wasn’t super interested in woodworking. I think I understand now. It’s because Leo is such a masterful and effortless teacher. He taught me to love boats, to love fine woodworking, to appreciate sailing. Thank you, Leo.

  • I’m from a landlocked country, get sea sick in a merry-go-round and never stepped foot in a workshop. Found this channel during peak covid, while in lockdown and a bit depressed. It was so inspiring seeing a man with a vision, surrounded by an incredible team working together to create something as beautiful as this boat. Seeing her launched makes me surprisingly emotional and I want to watch all the episodes that I missed over the years. Thanks for uploading this journey and save sailing!

Nobody else is as capable or more deserving of the future that you and the rest of us have built. My brother was a fan and before he died he and I would watch together. He would use the word "stunning" a dozen times every episode, and he thanked you for finally teaching him how to sharpen a chisel. Your positive influence carries further than you'll ever know. • Have watched Tally Ho's re-birth from day one and marvelled at the skill and attention to detail lavished by Leo and his many, many helpers. As a fellow Englishman I feel proud that a boat originally conceived and built in England and ending up in America as a rotten hulk, has been reborn using those same skills and crafts. To me the whole project is a metaphor for the founding of America by groups of settlers from many nations who set sail all those centuries ago in simple wooden sailing ships.

  • I got the significance of the wreath the moment I saw it. I presume it's made from branches of the conifers around the original location of the boat, at Raul and Darlene's place. A lovely tribute. What a bag of mixed emotions the crew must be feeling right now and it's no wonder Leo was speechless; the look on his face was enough to convey how he was feeling. • Being the 2,555th comment, I don't expect this to be read, but I never thought I would get as emotional as I am know. It is a sweet moment, with a bit of sadness mixed in. Sweet because I have been to Sequim once to donate some things, and to Port Townsend once to donate about 400 pounds of the lead used as ballast. The last time I was there I told Leo I'd see him in 2 1/2 years, which comes up this October. It was that stretch of time , previously, that I had been in Sequim. To see Tally Ho in the water was something I've wanted to see for a long time. The sadness comes from the fact that due my age and health issues, and Leo sailing around the world, I'll probably never get to visit him and the boat again. To Leo and his amazing crew, well done.

I watched every minute of every one during February and March, mainly whilst awaiting my turn for treatment, and hoping that I would catch up before launch - but continually amazed at how much work was involved and the patience and dedication on display. I sailed as a young man, and have been an engineer all my life, so have been utterly fascinated (sometimes for 2-3 hrs a day!) by these videos. I caught up a month ago real time, just after my treatment finished. And I have now been privileged to watch the launch just days after having been given the cancer "all clear". Tally Ho is now inextricably linked to my "cancer period". I'm now on the Isle of Wight, overlooking the Solent, and more confidently looking forward to seeing Tally Ho on her way "home" to her birthplace! It has been a splendid journey so far, Leo. • 2017 just after I retired and moved full time to Sequim, got bored one night and put Sequim into KZhead search engine. What pops up, but a crazy ass Englishman swinging a chainsaw cutting down trees and bushes to get clearance to put some old boat in the yard and next to a shop of a friend of his. After a few months of watching videos, realized the boat was just a few miles from my house. For my own mental, because watching YT is just fantasy land stuff, I took a box of Rainier Beer and walked up your driveway unannounced. Thank you for not throwing me out the first time. It's been an honour meeting and knowing you and all the extraordinary craftsmen/women that have laid their hands on the Tally Ho. Also, I talked to the young Port guy that was operating the travel lift the next day. He didn't say so, but I could hear it in his voice, he was scared spitless moving the Tally Ho. No pressure right, nothing ever goes wrong in a boatyard.lol Congratulations and cheers from Sequim

A lot of wood fixed together by glue, screws, sweat and tears, floating along to where, nobody knows, but MY WORD this was worth watching every single episode and the team, skills, and camaraderie, support and love for each other, restores ones faith in humanity. Bravo to every single individual person that watched, cried, worked, donated, and supported in your individual way which shows that every little bit of of help, big or small, can produce something so magical and something to be proud of. BRAVO !!!!!

  • Hey Leo, I stumbled across your Tally Ho! just after your project began. A few months later my dad, a lifelong sailor, had a stroke and was no longer able to sail. I introduced him to your project, and he’s been an avid viewer since. As a former resident of Sequim, he feels a personal attachment to the build you began there. We tried to get space in the open house you held a ways back with no luck, but that’s how a crowd-supported project is. Anyone who’s expressed disappointment in not being invited to the private launch was then only supporting the project for themselves. You and your amazing team accomplished so much, first in relation to Tally Ho! and second, with regard to the family and community you’ve built, in person and online. I hope you’re as proud of that as I am for you. We didn’t need to see the launch in person to share in your joy, your face when she touched the water was enough. What a tremendous accomplishment! I’ve marveled and learned so many woodworking techniques by watching your work, so thank you for that. On behalf of my dad and me, well done to you and to the team. Fair winds and following seas.

(On video anyway) 😁 People who view the boat in the harbor will probably admire it as a beautiful boat........ but if they have never seen these videos, especially the very beginning ones, they will have not the slightest clue as to the true beauty of this boat. Congratulations Leo, on making your dream come true. Awesome work, not just of the boat, but from the flawless camera angles, video editing, narration and making us forget we were watching a video. We were there with you. Congratulations 🥂🥂🥂🥂🥂

  • Well, Leo, it has been a long time coming. I'm 76 years old. I have had a couple of sailboats and lived on a 52' Motor Yacht (custom build, not by me 😀) You have done a great job. Some time ago, 40 or 45 years age I bought a set of plans for a Joshua Slocum Spray. I never even got started. But after watching every one of your videos' I, realize I, had no, idea what what I had instore had I tried. So, I have lived vicarioulsy through you and Tally Ho. I am a wood worker and, you may remember when you moved to Port Townsend I had an extra drill press and miter saw I wanted to get to you. Just wasn't able to make it happen. Anyway, I'm very proud of you. Now, as I watched you build Tally Ho, I am going to watch you sail her. I wish you fair winds and following seas!

I have tears in my old eyes today. Leo and his friends have given us a master class in dedication and persistence, and 6 years later she is reborn. This must be very emotional for Leo. This was very emotional because of all the work that has gone to make something beautiful, a work of art. Leo I don't know how you have done it. I think your obvious kindness and heartfelt love for others and your work ethic has drawn craftsmen (and women) to help Tally Ho come alive again. There are many boats that end up rotting in back yards and fields in this part of the world and each has a story. The story of the Tally Ho is EPIC and for almost 7 years I've watched with interest and amazement at the incredible mix of dreams, craftsmanship, talent, personality and above all dedication and spirit. Thank you, Leo, and all those involved for the gift you have given us. I look forward to the finishing of the project, setting sail, and to many a voyage. She sure looks pretty in the water. 🙂

  • I recall idling past Tally Ho a decade or so ago. I remarked to my wife what an prestigous name was scrolled across the bow. She quipped its for sale. I stopped and backed up so as to read the hand written "sign", a curled letter sized piece of paper or poster board that read Tally Ho for sale $1. attached to it's dry rotting hull. We chuckled not knowing its history or its future. Saw my first episode a few years later and haven't missed one since. • As a young sailor I would love to see this ship raise its sails for the first time. I wish you all the best and maybe hope to run into tally ho on the European shores.

  • Dear Leo, I am a 74-year-old Belgian coaster cap, following your project from the beginning, and I want to thank you for the hours of pleasure watching your videos, you made me wonder if I had chosen another profession such as woodwork.or all the other skills you demonstrate here, I think you and your crew showed me that handiwork prevails over intellectual forming. also, I admire your interaction with the Americans I sadly experienced American sailors being as union troublemakers on board merchant ships. However, I saw here other Americans so dedicated and skilled I would loved them on board. Saying this I wish you happy sailing, and who knows we meet at sea or in one or another harbour, because I am still sailing a 33' plastic yacht "Sophie--Jane" cheers Frank

  • As a sculptor, not a sailor, it’s been fascinating to watch you sculpt this work of art made out of trees. I can’t help but wonder, what becomes of Sampson Boat Co once you’re ready to take Tally Ho round the world? All those tools and that equipment that won’t fit on the boat? Does Sampson continue as a boatwright’s shop in Port Townsend? Do you move it all back to the UK? Someplace warmer like Jamaica? Astounding, isn’t it? That you find wonderful, generous, hard working, talented people wherever you go so willing to make Your dream even partly their own. Tally Ho is an embodiment of the best in humanity.

  • Leo. I've been to college, university, worked professionally in sculpture studio and moved to Canada in the time that you've been uploading these videos. Through the ups and downs, relationships and breakups, your videos have been with me every major step of my adult life! I appreciate you and the quality of your videos and I hope they never stop.

  • Another grown man in tears here, but I have something to add: With absolutely no discredit to Leo and his amazing crew of craftspeople, you can truthfully say that KZhead built this boat. That is the power of social media at its best. ❤🎉😢

    • I would agree, with all the negative tape that KZhead has been berated for it’s also become a brand new means for us to build new products and ideas to live and grow with. Congrats to you Leo and all of the craftspeople who have been involved with this day.

    • The fact that the weather was nice surprised me as well. There is NO place more beautiful than the pac n.w. when the sun is shining. But it comes at a cost. Now you have a new story to write, a new story to figure out. I’ve spent very little time involved with you, but I think that may change.

  • I could not have expected the number of tears I'd shed seeing this moment. Being here since the early days, watching for years of dedicated craftsmanship and sheer dedication to a project and reminiscing about people who've come and gone but their work will be forever a part of Tally Ho. It's amazing to see her hull lay in the water once again. Leo, a boat builder and a sailor. Now, Leo, a boat builder, a sailor, and proud captain of the Tally Ho. I know Darlene see's this launch and is so proud of you. Just as we all are, your fans. Fantastic work on this massive project. What was once a list of jobs too long to count, now just a page of work to be done. See you next video Leo. Cheers ❤
