There is no updated release ETA for early access. We are taking our time to improve the game in all aspects. The last 4 months the game has undergone a major rebuild from the ground up of all of its systems inside and out. It's pretty much a new game.
New Tripod Designs + Uber pod Previews
We will begin by discussing one of the main concerns we’ve heard since the conception of this idea. People have expressed their fears that the game will be shut down due to the fact that we recently created and began using a virtually 1:1 replica of the machines from the 2005 film.
I’ll be showing work in progress previews of the new machine design we have been working on. The purpose of this new design is to be our replacement for the movie accurate machines should we be denied a licensing opportunity or told to not use designs. While it is possible, it is unlikely that this will be the case. War of the Worlds itself is public domain hence why you see many different shows, movies, and other adaptations. While the idea is open for anyone to bring their own twist into the narrative, it is highly likely that the designs of the machines are property of Paramount so there is that possibility they will step in at some point. Because they haven’t yet doesn’t mean that they won’t. Our hope is to acquire official licensing to use the IP. We are continuing cautiously & optimistic but want to have Plan B ready to go & fully implemented so that should a change in the tripod designs be required, it doesn’t become an interruption to the development process and is as simple as toggling between both options. We assure you this game will be released and you will be able to play using the movie accurate designs through a separate free add on that will come separate from the game. Either way, both of these machine designs will be available upon early access release to switch between.
Across the design team, we agreed this new imagination should visually and technically resemble the original inspiration. We know most of you are all fans of the look of the tripod’s in the movie and should we need to change it for our own imagining, we wanted to make sure the tripod still gave off the same biomechanical aquatic three legged hooded machine feel and that it could still use the same rig and animations as the movie accurate model. This will end up saving hundreds of development hours from needing to re-rig and reanimate an entirely different machine. It will use most of the same animations and be based on the same AI. The switch between either or will be as simple as flipping a switch. There are many unique differences between the designs that differentiate it enough from the movie’s design to avoid issues.

At 3:48 you turn on the light, then not long after the Tripod notices and starts getting out of stealth mode and not only looks where you were but also fires upon where it last saw you. Horror doesn't really get me, but something about this scenario in a game gives me chills. Especially the sounds. The CONSTANT need to survive. The Insect/aquatic nature of these things. I was like 7 or 8, I loved Independence Day so I thought this would be similar. No, WotW did so much better at making you feel vulnerable, helpless, less action scenes and more dread. It was an alien threat that wanted to snatch you out of your house and grind you into paste while you were still alive. THAT fucked me up. To this day, I can't hear loud noises outside at night without picturing tripods. And seeing lights on the horizon? At night? Forget it! A sense of dread that hasn't left me to this day.

    • @@conallplatts5244 Honestly among all the survival movies and games I experienced, this one has the highest survivability rate for humans. 1. Tripods are extremely slow and bulky. 2. They are very loud you can hear them coming from 10 miles away, and so easily see too. 3. They have a huge dead spot angle they can't see. 4. Their visual system are extremely basic. Requiring a clear visibility to detect humans. At night they require flashlight. They have no thermal vision nor motion detectors. 5. They never attack houses unless they see a human going inside. So cities are almost safe zones from them. 6. They are unable to reach underground systems like metro or bunker. Anyone with a decent camouflage can easily hide from them forever. It would be a pretty fked up situation but you can live forever in underground and using camouflage at surface. The only real enemy in a situation like this would be humans, not tripods...

  • The moment you showcased you being able to hold NPCs at gunpoint for supplies was just amazing. I like that you guys are holding the backup design and working on it in case something bad does happen, it shows a lot of security from this project that most games like this don't have. The new model looks absolutely great in action and the way it looks but up close and at a distance is awesome. I still do prefer the sounds used in the original movie for them as they felt more "gothic" if that makes sense, but these work great too. I think their walking noise could have some variations added to it so it doesn't get tiring, and it should probably start being heard further away. You already replied to me about this in the comment section of your Tripod update, but I still feel its gonna be really important to make the Tripod have the posibility to take sharper turns and movement like we see in the film, from crouching down in multiple ways to being able to turn its head first and then its legs around. I really wanna see it do that if we just suddenly shoot at it from behind and it goes like "bruh who the hell's doing that". Another thing gameplay wise is that, at least from the footage seen so far, I think Tripod encounters are way too common. I feel like this game will really live based on the longterm tension it can create for you, especially as your playthrough gets longer and longer and you risk losing everything. Having even multiple in game days without a Tripod encounter is really gonna just build up so much adrenaline that when it does happen, its gonna be way scarier.

    @elsienova4269@elsienova4269 Жыл бұрын
    • While I agree with your last point about less often Tripod encounters, I think a good counterbalance would be making them harder to avoid once they DO show up, like being able to spot the character easier (perhaps dependent on a set difficulty level) and zero blind-spots around it, maybe a proximity sensor?

      @elliotblabla@elliotblabla Жыл бұрын
    • @@elliotblabla A proximity sensor might prove to be a bit of an overkill, it could strip the player of those potential adrenaline rush moments where you're hiding for dear life under some rubble and the Tripod walks right above you, almost stepping on you with its legs. The sensors would mean you'd need to keep your distance no matter what. But I agree that some more cameras/lights around that thing would be appreciated, so that you can't feel safe whenever the machine isn't directly facing you. Maybe more spontaneous turns and movements, so that it's way more unpredictable and hard to stay in the Tripod's blind spots.

      @Potke@Potke Жыл бұрын

    • @@SirKolass Honestly I don’t see why Paramount wouldn’t want to affiliate with the game. It’s based on a movie that’s well over 15 years old, if they officially licensed it, it may create a reflux of interest in the 2005 film. It wouldn’t be the first time something like that had happened, one example that comes to mind is the Ghostface and Stranger Things add-ons in DeadByDaylight. If Paramount were REALLY tetchy, the only thing I can think of for them to get upset about is the game developers not asking for licensing rights BEFORE beginning development. But, to respond to that, I’d just remind them how popular this game is getting from development updates ALONE. Only good press.

  • One suggestion I can add is to add a reverb to the heat ray. I'm sure this will be added but it would give it a realistic touch. If you've ever heard a transformer blow up (or anything with high voltage) after it stops you can hear it reverberate through the air

  • It would be awesome to have a stealth system where walking and making noise could made you visible to the Tripods (Assassin's Creed-esque) and houses could be structures that the tripods could randomly stop by and analise trying to find someone, if you could hide then good, now if you're spotted then run for your life

I know the tripods are a huge focus, and so is survival, but in my opinion continuing to focus on making the world feel alive as much as a alien invaded world can be alive is one of the things that will make this game go viral. Keep it up man, can’t wait to see this game when it’s done

  • Throughout I thought of a couple more things they could implement. 1: some houses or even buildings could have some candles that can be burned out (and maybe even craftable) for lighting so the player doesn't have to wave around a flashlight, possibly decreasing any risk. 2: more possible NPC interactions (not exactly required but it certainly could make the game feel more lively).

  • Im not sure if you guys realized but when you hear the tri-pods start up before they used their laser in the movie, That sound is actually the sound of an M1A1 Abrams conducting a cold start of the tank engine which takes about a minute or so. I know this because they came to our motorpool in GA to record the sounds.

  • I think the tripods ability to detect player (sound or sight) should be increased, maybe make it depending on difficulty level. Currently, from what i can see you can often run in the open in front of them, or next to them and they won't notice you, and that just take away a lot of their fear factor. Maybe you can also make a main "spot area" and smaller invisible "spotlight" that moves randomly on the sides and partially behind tripod in certain radius, so running right behind it will be always risky?

    @maciekgrodzinski9133@maciekgrodzinski9133 Жыл бұрын
    • Generally having rng for "spotting" probably wouldn't be a healthy game design idea I believe. Maybe instead the tripod detects the player if it's by their leg if they are only quite literally touching it? Because even in the movie the tripod doesn't notice little baby whittle humans even if they're quite literally yelling at it to turn around.

    • The tripods are not living things, I don't believe since they are being driven by aliens. I think this is pretty realistic. Have them spot the people easier than this wouldn't feel realistic at all. Like you would notice an ant on a sidewalk if you just walking around, I mean sure if you're looking at the ground you would likely see it, but tripods don't have night vision or heat detectors, just judging how they use their own lights it would be hard for them to see people def at nighttime, and yeah i get what you mean about being out in the open and they don't attack the povs character. I think maybe, yeah, they can change that bit, if there is not a reason why it didn't attack him, it could have been distracted by some ai nearby or something.

    • @@finecanine376 I agree with ol mate that maybe detection should be amped up a little but you make some good points aswell. To go off your point about the ants, you wouldn’t notice an ant if you’re just walking but if you’re out trying to exterminate and harvest every ant I think you would. But I believe the detection parameters could be dynamic in weather and time conditions. Like you said they have a spotlight so obvs don’t use heat/night vision so it could be desirable at night to loot and stuff but then that can have cool and dangerous situations with npcs. Additionally could also change the tripod behaviour depending on how far in the invasion has started, like at the beginning people are everywhere so harvesting and killing is pretty easy but further in its a lot more scarce and maybe searching can seem a little more frantic. Then again it’s an ambitious idea but yea, think they should be able to detect you a little easier cause like, it’s why they’re there if that makes any sense?

  • the combination of feeling as helpless and powerless as an insect being exterminated by a far superior being but at the same time retaining the mental capacity and awareness of a human is terrifying. at least a cockroach only has a very basic understanding of what is happening. it knows something huge is trying to kill it and thats it. the fear, if it does feel fear is very limited and its lack of advanced intelligence prevents it from feeling more fear. our brains would make being in the cockroaches position infinitely more terrifying. and that damn sound.

  • 12:58 I think the birds and insects should go quiet when a Tripod comes close, just like most do when a predator is nearby. And it would make the ambiance of this particular moment heavier. A Tripod being so loud, heavy, and alien, the local fauna should be as terrified as we would be.
