The way that these open center differential cars deliver “up to” 100% of torque to the rear is the same way they deliver the torque to the opposite wheel on an axle: by braking the slipping wheels. So... if both front wheels are slipping, traction control should brake them, sending the torque to the rear instead. It will only theoretically send 100% to the rear. In reality it will likely max out around 95-97%. It’s actually a better system than a locked center differential, which will only send 50% to each axle.
It's not right for AWD system equiped with power transfer unit. Yours are only correct for open central differential.
Zhejun Zhang This DOES have an open differential, with a wet clutch, controlled electronically. It does not have a locking center differential.
@@afcgeo882 It doesn't have center differential at all, just a multiplate clutch-pack. When it gets locked then ~100% of torque (not rotational speed - common mistake) may go to the rear (when there is no traction at front). Torque split of open differential is always 50/50 (but may differ rotational speed), while torque split of locked diff is from 0/100 to 100/0 (but rotational speed is the same).
@@afcgeo882 Of course it doesn't have center differential. Tiguan's awd system is based on Haldex V, so no center diff at all. By definition. And by mechanical structure, just look under the car. Power to the rear goes from the ring gear (of front diff) to the PTU (which is nothing more than simple, stiff angular gear), then from PTU to the driveshaft and from the driveshaft to Haldex clutch (which is usually mounted at the end of driveshaft). And then to rear diff (if clutch is engaged). You seem to lack the understanding of what you write.
@@afcgeo882 You have no idea what haldex is, have you? There are no two drive axles that stem from the PTU. There is only drive shaft which goes to the rear. Just like I wrote in previous comment. Educate yourself before you accuse me of trolling.
My wife bought one yesterday. We live in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas. This is all she needs. For more rugged stuff, I have a my Toyota Tundra SS Off Road. 👍🏻👍🏻

Great to see a practical review of a Tiguan on loose stones , gravel .I have a hi output twin turbo Diesel Tiguan in the uk. On the same tyres and with 4motion it has coped with snow and mud very well , plus the Scorpions are a pretty good fast road tyre too.
I have a 2019 tiguan se with 4motion and it is an absolute beast in the snow. I was driving through 2 foot of snow and I didnt slide or bog down even once. And that was with stock all season tires.
In germany we got the tiguan with a 2.0l TDI with 240hp thats a really good engine for this car and we also got lane assist for the tiguan and it works great.
Torque matters more than horsepower when going off road at slow speeds.
Something that all Tiguans are very good at even the older generations.
Especially turbocharged torque which many of the Japanese lack in recent years.
Torque that can be easily controlled matters
Hp x rpm =torque.

I just got a 2019 Alltrack and took it through snow a few weeks ago for the first time. It handled better than my Outback on ice and snow. I was intentionally driving poorly to lose control but it just wouldn’t give up grip. It eats standing water like nothing. The Outback has noticeable power loss when driving through heavy PNW rain. Very satisfied with my VW and Haldex 5.

good test and Tiguans seems capable of driving a little bitt off road. That’s all it’s owners will need from time to time (if ever).
Thanks for this video , I really wanted to see this off-road capability , not like I am going to do off road with my Tiguan highline but u never know the navigator can sometimes take to u to some shiti gravel roads. But I did go a couple of times on gravel roads and boy it still feels so comfortable at 50-60 kmph

Got this same vehicle but in the R line trim and I must say in the snow it's a charm to drive, even in 2 feet deep. Btw you can have your map in the dash screen, in the off-road mode, you can actually see what your wheels are doing and the degree angle of them.
I was very impressed how well our Tiguan did in over a foot of unplowed snow.

I have the regular one and it’s crap in snow! I miss my awd so much
I own a 2019 and absolutely love it more all the time! Mine is the platinum gray color and it’s very capable. It’s not fast as everyone points out but I’m honestly never lacking power once I get going. It is a little slow off the line. On rare occasions I do feel like I’m pushing the throttle and not a lot is going on. It’s okay I’m used to it. I compared the Rav-4 and it felt painfully slow. That’s the only slight complaint I have but the 2.0 and 8- speed transmission are smooth and work well together. I usually drive my Tiguan in manual mode anyway. It’s quiet and the seats are terrific and the big glass 8” touch screen with satellite radio are a pleasure to use and look it. The Tiguan even rocks a CD player so I carry some old CD’s with me! I have the 3rd row seat which is only large enuff for my little nieces & nephews under 10. The long VW Warranty is great too! I made need it if the turbo gives out in the first 6 years but I’ll probably trade for the Atlas Cross Sport in 2-3 years. I recommend Tiguan over Honda CR-4. The Mazda CX-5 was my top choice until I drove over to the VW store by chance. Once I stepped into this Tiguan and drove it I was sold! One of the best all around vehicles I’ve ever owned besides the Honda Ridgeline. And I’m loving cargo capacity with the 3rd row usually hidden away. And this car doesn’t require premium fuel.
Hi, you seem pretty happy about your Tiguan. You mention it is also quiet: that is a big plus for me (I am in no way an extreme driver). A question: I am pondering on Audi Q5. Do you happen to have an idea if the Q5 is worthy the significantly higher price tag?
Andrea Camattari I would buy an Audi of any kind, I might lease one for lots of reasons. But to answer your question I think the Tiguan offers all that most people need without the prestigious badge. I think that’s what it comes down to. VW adds features to the Tiguan with each passing year. The SEL R-Line is a beautiful looking crossover. I’m so happy with my Tiguan that I’ve told friends & family I would happily purchase another one if I needed to. For 2021 the Tiguan is getting a refresh you can check out on other KZhead channels. The front end lights will look slimmer and all models will include LED headlights. The interior will get new seat upholstery options and the button & switches are I’ll change some, too and so on. The Audi will give you some more high end materials and that is nice but you pay a lot for that. And you’ll get a slightly better audio system etc. not worth is for me. Hope that helps.

Thanks for this review. We have the exact trim (plus 3rd row) and love it! Will likely never take it off-road but appreciate the capabilities as aptly demonstrated by your video. Agree that the black on black interior is boring, that’s why we have the light grey interior and dark stitching...much more stylish! Keep up the good work! For those contemplating the Tiguan, we've put about 10K on it in about six months and it's probably the best running car we've ever owned...and we've driven them all from domestic to Japanese to German. My wife loves this car...the Outback was her favorite until we bought the Tiguan. I drive a late model A4 and I think I like her Tiguan better!
Sam C wow this is great to read! I bought my 2019 Tiguan SE in April and have 5500 miles on it and I’m really pleased at how smooth it is. Not fast off the line but once I am going I never lack for power, I’m fine with it. No regrets and it’s my first CUV. I was thinking I’d be driving the Mazda CX-5 but ran over to VW Dealer to drive this real quick on a whim and I fell in love with ergonomics and 8” glass touch screen and the seats! I also got the storm gray leather included with black leatherette and I’m happy with it. I like the steering wheel and the cargo space and warranty and 3rd row and CD player lol. I’m a happy guy. Out the door for about $24,300 with destination for an SE front wheel drive. I don’t need 4-Motion in Oklahoma. I have a truck with 4x4 in winter

Hey Ryan, love your vids, thank you. I have a question, i'm planning a trip across the northern states this Christmas. Which Midsize All Wheel or 4 Wheel drive vehicle would you recommend i rent to minimize issues on snow layden roads?
That was a really good review. Rather than just jabbering opinions and specs, he did some useful tests and demonstrations. It kind of told me what I needed to know: having gotten used to real 4WD with a transaxle, will this new-fangled technology leave me frustrated? Maybe not so much, if I just let it do what it was designed for.
Incredible vehicle and so underrated, pretty much one of the best in class in terms of driving,quality,practicality,safety, and AWD, the 4Motion system is flawless in light snow/off road, people with CRV/Sportage/Rav4 will be stuck and you will drive like there is nothing on the road,I speak from experience.Compared to the new Rav4 Hybrid the Tiguan is like 10 times better off road.

JULEPPS The Haldex AWD system is the best system to have in the winter going through snow and ice. You want front bias in slippery conditions. Which it gives you that front bias.

I have a 150hp R line tech diesel which I use for work, and occasionally have to off road it to reach remote areas. While I wish I’d gone for a more powerful model for day to day driving, it never ceases to amaze me how well it copes off road, for what it is. I’ve just had to cross a very slippery soaking wet grass field on an incline. The only vehicles that made it across were my Tiguan and a Ford ranger on all terrain BF Goodrich tyres. The Tiguan is running 20 inch Michelin Pilot sport 4 tyres so had no right to cope the way it did. I wasn’t impressed with car when I got it, and quickly named it “The Getter” short for grocery getter. But it’s grown on me over the 2 1/2 years and 48,000 miles I’ve done in it. I’ll actually be sad to see it go when the lease is up.
I have a 2022 taos with 4motion. Just back 5min ago from testing it offroad.. Here in Canada right now snow melted and left mud and water in the trail, with still a bit of snow here and there. Except for the not so great tires, it fared better than I thought (i used to have a wrangler, after that a manual suby outback, and a 2019 nissan frontier pro4x so I'm experienced in offroad)

Appreciate the test, with a reasonable set of grippier tires rather than the street tires would have been even better. We have a 2017 Alltrak and like it just fine--nice road car, would like some more ground clearance for when we are plunking down forest roads, but the on-road manners were so much more fun than forester, we went with the Alltrak--this new system really shined. May have to trade up...

That's the thing about VW. They may not look the most exciting but they are engineered very well. I like the way they look though especially with an R Line kit. They look clean. Like a tailored suit.
Just ordered the rline diesel auto 2.o front wheel drive, might change my mind ,however how much more fuel consumption would I use theres not to much terrain in these parts

Those parking sensors are so annoying. In finland there is snow, snow clogs on to the parking sensors and thus it beeps and peeps like crazy:F great video!
Not sure about US spec, but in Canada my Rline does show you off road details, its under vehicles option on main screen

It would be nice it you had the option of locking all tires. Our kia had that option, we just bought this car a 2023 model R. So far we like it.

Impressive at off-roading
Luckily in Australia we have the turbo diesel with greater power and the lane keeping function. Have had ours in the sand and it appears to cope reasonably well. The Touareg is the pick when going off road though.
I agree. I own a Touareg and that thing is great with offroading.
Love your off-road reviews! Little confused here. You kept mentioning the long overhangs, but according to what I read, this Tiguan has a better approach angle than most Subies and the new Rav4. Am I missing something? 🤔
I was thinking in terms of versus dedicated off-roader . Didn’t look them up again, but I believe you are correct that it’s better than the ones listed.

@@deepncsu Depends on conditions. If you're in deep snow, there's no replacement for ground clearance.
Can you also test an Atlas off road too?

The higher angle lower grill with the adventure model will probably minimise those bug kills on road trips that clog your radiator.

Your diagram has it a bit backwards. Why would the ECU send power to the rear while the rear wheels have no traction? It's when the front wheels don't have traction that the ECU should engage the clutch pack and send power to the rear. But other than that, well explained!

I had a 2010 and when I first got it I drove it through every mess I could find. Creek crossing, mud, snow, sand along the beach, etc. Did great and if you pick your lines on light trail excursions it was OK. I have the 2019 now with an inch more ground clearance so if it's anywhere near as good as the old one I'll be happy. Engine in the old one WAY more peppy though. Honestly not even sure why they called the new one Tiguan. Totally different experience overall so far. Not bad, just different.
Brent Taylor Art I never have driven the old one. I’m curious. I have a 2019. I’m understand from all these reviews that it’s better in about every way but they all say it’s bloated and less peppy.

Looked seriously at the Tiguan last year. As a GTI owner I had high hopes for it. Unfortunately, I think the GTI experience led me to expect too much from the Tiguan. It felt anemic unless it had been put into "sport" mode. And though it uniquely offers a third row in its category, it's really only appropriate for bound and gagged hostages, small ones at that. Otherwise, though, I was impressed.
Stephen Hendricks I wanted a Ford Mustang. For some reason, the Expedition didn’t drive like one. It also wasn’t as roomy as a city bus. Go figure.
@@afcgeo882 I can see how you might have that comment based on what I said. In fact, though, I didn't expect the Tiguan to be a GTI SUV. I just found its "normal" drive mode to be rather gutless. Put in "sport" mode it drove quite well. But in any event the SUV is my wife's daily driver, not mine. And she preferred the KIA Sorento among the vehicles we considered. I liked the Tiguan but if I were doing the choosing it would have been the VW AllTrack.
I Enjoy my 2019 but your comments are spot on. I adjusted my expectations but for what i paid out the door I’m happy.
You can turn off those parking sensors in settings .
Its a pity you dont get the 7 speed dsg in the Tiguan in NA. Its a wet clutch, quite durabke and makes the car feel very sporty!

Can you test the new Chevy Blazer with the rear differential clutch?
The Blazer RS with Active Twin Clutch(GKN) would ace this test with minimum two wheels on the ground and no TC/ESC shenanigans with no buttons to push or modes to enter(Subaru) Most top of the line GM SUVs offer this AWD system.
Why in America does the Tiguan have an 8 speed auto box but in Britain it has a 7 speed DSG auto box?

I think quattro is still far better but obviously 4motion is improving as well.No wonder why pricier cars are equipped with Haldex 5.

Good stuff. How does the haldex system compare to the Toyota highlanders awd system.
The engine is a washout. The previous 2.0 litre 200 h.p. was a better engine. It has been dumb down way too much for highway-expressway driving. Otherwise the other features are good for this price point. Good review.
Gregory Trane why do you think VW did that to the engine? I just bought a 2019. It’s not bad once I get going but it is slower off the line. But I didn’t buy it to speed in and it gets me on the highway when needed to merge on.

Do you think the hill descent works in reverse? I have a really steep driveway that I don't attempt to use in the winter (upstate NY). If the hill descent works backing down my driveway, I might attempt it... thoughts appreciated.
We checked with Volkswagen since we did not test HDC in reverse (sorry it took a couple days). The Tiguan product manager said that forward HDC engages at grades greater or equal to 10%, in reverse it will engage on grades equal or greater than 9%.
Since it's just software, many vehicles do offer reverse HDC now. But not all of them.

I am interested in the SEL Premium R-Line 4Motion which comes with 19" wheels and 235/50HR19.0 tires. How do you think the vehicle would handle with these type of wheels/tires in a similar off road demonstration like the video and on snow and ice vs the wheels/tires on the Tiguan in the video? Thanks!
19’s are big for off-road. Higher risk of puncture. I don’t know exactly which tires come on that wheel package. Any idea?

Also, any feeling when driving the Tiguan like you were missing a decent center console you wanted to lean on. I realize that is personal preference but wanted to check your thoughts. That is how felt on the Tiguan's I have test driven/rented.
When climbing the rocky trail you had it in drive, my question is that, would it be better to have it in manual mode or auto?
Wouldn’t matter. In both cases I was in the lowest gear for the slowest crawl ratio.

I'm getting a 2020 tiguan 4motion. 2 of them. It comes with 7.9 ground clearance with 17 inch rims. I have a 2017 tiguan with 6.9 ground clearance with 16 inch rims. I live in an area that can easily get 2ft of snow in a 48 hour period. The mix of compacted snow and powdery snow. About 4 times the condition i would get would bottom my 2017 tiguan out in the powder and compacted snow. Not by much. Would going for 10inches of ground clearance in my 2020 vw tiguan be safe and how would I go for 10 inches of ground clearance? I am figuring 3.1 inches of more clearance from my 2017 to a lifted 2020 would make all the difference. Would I lift and increase tire size? Or just lift?
A question best asked in the forums. This reviewer does not suggest modifications outside of tires maybe.

I'm seriously considering getting a 2019 Tiguan "Offrad". Would you say with the Offrad line the Tiguan is a capable offroader or is it more like a visual kit actually?
That would be great for rugged trails, but I would pause before going full-overlander with it just due to limitations of a unibody with minimal articlulation. The AWD system is good though and it should be more than enough for most trails.

2023 has new ZF8 transmission. Turbo in US IS20😢 Turbo other places is IS38😊
I thought this does have lane keeping? Maybe that's ping ponging instead of lane centering?

I have an alltrack and the suspension over bumps and dips is so loud and jarring it makes you want to stay only on smooth roads.

Also Tiguan's short front and rear overhang is an advantage in rough terrain. Most factory lifted SWs, like Subaru Outback, the overhang in front and rear is too long for steep shapes offroad. Approaching and drop angles are important to know offroad. The previous generation Tiguan had also an offroad model (Track & Field), which was equipped with an offroad bumber in front, steel skid plate and offroad-driving mode.
This VW is a great car. However, comparing the price and the engine, I think Outback XT is better.
