    • @@ossian108 I'm not sure. I know the Patriot Missiles actually impact the incoming missile to destroy it. And lets face it, missiles are much smaller and faster than aircraft. So there has to be anti-aircraft missiles that can physically impact a much bigger and slower object right?

    • @@anheoinwaters Nope. This is a starstreak manpad most likely. Pre explosion sends out kinetic darts that target the engine/gearbox of the helicopter. Uses laser targeting, so immune to most used countermeasures 😉

      @eilertv@eilertv Жыл бұрын
    • @@eilertv Eh no. Not sure what this is yet, but I can damn near guarantee you that _it is _*_not_* Starstreak. First off, a Starstreak "missile" even with its 2nd stage still attached, isn't _remotely_ this big. Whatever this was, it's a _really_ big boy - multiple times longer and wider than Starstreak. A starstreak with its 2nd stage is barely ~130mm /~5 inches in diameter. At this distance and video quality, it likely would not have been "visible" in the footage. And nearing impact its only the darts, and those are less than 1 inch in diameter. 2nd: We wouldn't see it in this footage if it was starstreak, because of its speed. Certainly not in multiple frames - those are moving at ~1400 m/s. But maybe the biggest giveaway: _There is no "pre explosion" with Starstreak._ The second propellant stage accellerates the whole thing to ~mach 4. When the 2nd stage is spent, the darts are "just" released from the carrier. They coast the rest of the way. At that speed of release, there is no need nor benefit of some "pre explosion". The darts have plenty enough kinetic energy as it is, to coast their way to the target, and penetrate deep into the target upon impact. They have a delay-upon-impact fuse. Unlike more conventional explosive air target missiles that explode either upon impact, but most commonly _in close proximity _*_outside_* of their target, which requires a fairly big warhead to do serious damage - starstreak don't *need* a big payload. That's the whole point of the tungsten darts - the purpose of their mass/density, speed and hardness is for them to bury deep _inside_ the target before they blow up. It's kinds like with a firecracker. If you set one off 30-40 cm away from your hand, it takes a _very_ big and powerful one, packed with a *_huge_* ammount of fragmentation elements, to cause servere injury to your hand. But, it will be much more forgiving in terms of firecracker placement (in missile terms; targeting, evasive manouvers and the missile/warhead's relative position vs its target) upon detonation. What these starstreak darts do however... That would be more like a normal mid-size firecracker, but setting it off _in_ your hand, tightly closing a fist around it. Or - uhm... like shoving it a full arms length up your bum 😅

    • Insane, stupid, or Russian. Several of my US Army helicopter IPs (instructor pilots) were Vietnam veterans. One of them demonstrated in a UH-1H how they flew in Vietnam and told us it may save our lives someday. He flew below treetop level at 110 knots. If the trees were too close for the rotary blades he would increase collective pitch so the rotor blades barely cleared the treetops but the fuselage was still below the treetops. We had to pick the leaves off the skids and cargo hook after landing so he would not get into trouble for flying so low.

If it was fired from a long distance, the Surface to Air missile would actually fly to an altitude above the aircraft it's attacking and then glide to the target after the fuel in the missile has been expended, flying on momentum and using the fins to adjust the direction to the target as it maneuvers. Unlike the movies, the fuel in a missile is expended not long after it is launched, so it won't be able to chase an aircraft if the missile has missed its target.
