Transmission Fluid Change In 24 Years! How Bad Does it Look? F-150
Some folks say not to change the automatic transmission fluid on an older high mileage vehicle like this 1997 Ford F150 with 138K original miles. Changing the fluid and flushing the fluid are two different things. Flushing can push particles of contamination into small orifices and clog them which can cause transmission failure. Draining the old fluid and replacing it with a new filter is more gradual and tends to leave the bad stuff undisturbed. Fresh fluid has properties that improve lubrication and also help to maintain the proper fluid pressure necessary for smooth shifting. This video shows what the first transmission fluid change in 24 years on an Ford F150 transmission. Feel free to leave a comment or question down belowand if you get a chance smash the like button. I appreciate you taking the time to watch the video, thanks! -Glen

Next time go with Amsoiland a can Of BG ATC conditioner you can put it in anytime and you will notice the difference
I think Wix makes the filters
Pry the filter apart that’s where the metal shavings are at
Good vid
Next time primer and paint the bottom of the pan
good work. My 2008 F150 4x4 has 335,000 miles and the tranny has never been serviced. Remarkable! If it fails today, I've gotten my moneys worth out of this fine crew cab. I'll drop a rebuilt transmission back in and keep rolling. Talk about Ford tough ... I'm impressed.
Great work Glen and glad to hear that she shifts better than before! 😀
It shifts smoother than my bald head. lol Have a good 4th of July!
Thank you for the video.
Good teacher ! Thanks
Great video, engaging and thorough. Thank you.
You're welcome Peter
Great video! Lots of cool little tips I’ll be sure to use
I appreciate you checking the video out, thanks
Another great video…very helpful.
Thanks Suz
Nicely done
Thanks. Keeping the old Ford rolling down the road.
Nice work. I'm impressed with the condition of that pan lol
So was I. 138K miles and the truck is used for work, hauls tools and materials.
Great video, you were more than exceptional in the process.
Thanks Snake!
Wow after doing this job on my 2017 with the 10R80 I’m soooo jealous of how freaking easy yours was. 😂 Mine wasn’t horrible but definitely a lot more work than that.
Good video Glen ! I have to do the same thing on my 2001 F150
It's easy Norm, just be ready for that trans fluid shower!
Awesome video brother!
Thank you!
Great video! Nice work.
Thanks Rock!
Man do I really need to do that..not having problems or anything. But checked it yesterday and not the color I was looking for..no red look..glad I looked at this vid
Very well done video explained it very well
Thanks
Awesome vid thank you!
Thanks Jack
Very good thank you
U do good work 👍
Thanks Slab!
the 4R70W seems to be a very reliable unit, we have a 1999 expedition with 400k on the original 4R70W, I just changed the fluid in our 04 expedition with 240k
That is some serious mileage! I was really surprised how good things looked inside the pan. Thanks Trigga
My 97 f150 has 200k, just dropped the pan and it was actually pretty for its age, original gasket and filter in it, i reused the gasket again
That pan was really clean with very little grim
Happy to see it, makes me feel tingly inside. TMI haha
Good video. Simple and Straitforword. FWIW: I cut the heads off of 4 pan bolts that are a little longer than the originals and round off the cut ends. I then cut slots into the rounded ends for a screw driver and thread them into the 4 corners of the case. This keeps the gasket aligned as I put the pan back up. The modified bolts sleep in my 'Odds and Ends' plastic case until needed again. I also disconnect the cooling lines at the radiator and drain the torque coverter. If replacing all that fluid causes slippage, it simply means I was headed for an overhaul soon anyway. Again, Good Video......
That bolt guide trick is a great idea Russ! Thanks for sharing and happy shifting. -Glen
Is the Trans still shifting Glen. Great job on the video very detailed.
haha, I got lucky no happy accidents. Thank you sir
I got almost 12 quarts, with torque converter drained. The plug is behind the rubber cover.
Should I change the fluid and filter on my 25 year old Nissan pathfinder I tried Lucas fix slip it helped a little but it still has poor acceleration
You might do a flush. As good as that pan looked, I wouldn't be afraid to do a full fluid exchange on it. I've never had trouble before. Whenever I buy a used vehicle, the first thing I do, is change ALL the fluids. That includes the power steering, flushing the brake lines, as well as the engine oil, transmission fluid, differential (s) oil and even the transfer case.(if FWD) I also flush the coolant, especially, if it looks brown.
Good maintenance is the way to go!
Don't forget about the 3stage decarb treatment
Nice! I’m about to drop the pan in my 1995. Was there any reason the geniuses at ford opted to not use a drain plug?😭
Most manufacturers don't, never understood why not.
Now they don't even give you a dipstick. You have to get under the car and remove a fill plug, with the trans warm, and see if the fluid dribbles out.
I like how he’s funny while teaching
If you are talking about me, thanks! 😄
Great job! I've learned troublesome gaskets (though yours wasn't one) can be held in with a few zip-ties and remove them prior to tightening the bolts. Again, good work! :)
That's a great tip! Thanks for your comment Mike
Why oh why had that never occurred to me. Doh! Thanks
i have a 1996 ford f150 5.0 4x4 automatic. it would’ve come with a 4r70w correct?
C6, E40D, or 4R70W.
Never think to suck auto gearbox atf out first before filter change REALLY worth effort when depanning sump, to change filters and seals, really stops the mess the rear gear box seal, jet wash it till clean, you be surprised they stop leaking with road dirt and xxxt clean out of back of gearbox seals
Nature's natural stop leak.
I just check my oil on my truck and its really darker than this one do you think it will help if a do a full flush again. Last time i just drop the pan change filter an gasket an add new oil
A second fluid change with the correct fluid should make a big difference.
When you want to extract another gallon or so of fluid, and then replace that, can you just siphon it up through the dipstick tube or do you have to drop the pan again?
One way is faster than the other.
Nice Bike.
Thanks
just needed to drain the t.c if you remove that round plug on the bell housing spin the tc util you see the drain screw
If it hasn’t been changed in more than 100k miles it’s better to leave some of the old fluid in. That grit in the old fluid can help. If it’s been that long and there is no grit left in the fluid it can cause slipping.
@@jubblybits6155no it won’t if it doesn’t something is already wrong with the transmission
@@jubblybits6155 That's complete bull, stop spreading crap you know nothing about.
I have a 2000 ford expedition 4.6L V8 Triton XLT and just wanted to know if using the ford Motorcraft Transmission fluid and power steering fluid like you just showed is okay. I didn't know Transmission fluid and power steering fluid was interchangeable like that since I am used to buying mercon v separate.
Always best to look up specs in the owners manual or service info online.
@@ozzstars_cars Exactly. Mine does say Ford Motorcraft mercon v atp
Why not pump it out through the dip-stick since you are not changing the filter?
To slow of a process and wouldn't be able to access and replace the 24 year old filter.
Love the poped a cherry comment lol great video
lol
Great video Glenn, I guess that’s a good way to flush out the torque converter as well just drain it again!! Inside of that oil pan looked great, I was kind of wondering how it’s gonna look but it appears to be a good transmission still👍!! I have a nice Fourth of July buddy!!
For all the tools and materials the truck has hauled it was surprising. Shifts great now, hopefully it won't let me down now. Have a great holiday weekend Scott!
Hey Ozz, is that a DC3 idling in your drive way or just a big a$$ fan? How can you sleep at night running tha same oil for so long!? Well done (again) bud.
Damn neighbor had to start tinkering with his Cessna just when I fire up the camera. lol Thanks man, appreciate you.
For a transmission wasn’t been derived in 24 years the fluid looks clean.
I was really surprised it looked so clean considering the truck is used for work. The fluid was changed again shortly after and the transmission shifts much smoother.
Can we turn on the truck with the pan off so it could drain the rest of the transmission?
I hope You didn’t do that any moving part with no oil will destroy moving components
I have a question what do you call that black cicle cap on the side of the pan???? And what is it for
The black what cap? What time stamp in the video?
On the other side of the pan! It looks like a suction type of cap!
Looks like you can drain something also by removing that black circle plug
That's the inspection plug on the bell housing
I got a 2008 Ford fusion with about 200,000 on it and never had the trans fluid changed, was wondering about a drain and fill but I'm scared it will cause problems with my trans if I do,what's your thoughts
If it shifts okay then leave it alone at this point. It's at the end of its life.
Did you change it? I have same make and model and around same mileage I’m about to do a drain and fill
@@vincentriley8626no I didn't if you do let me know how it goes
@@terrymccluskey8758 just did ny explorer. 195k. Was starting to shift sluggish and fluid was getting dark. New filter and 5 quarts of mercon V. Smooth as silk now. Left the fluid in the converter so partial oil change.
What happens if you put more in than came out? Like half a quart?
I wouldn't want to try that.
@@ozzstars_cars im guessing its bad from pressure readings or whatever. I'm getting ready to do it but just curious how or how undevastating
That was a risky call on 24 yr fluid!! In my 15yr owning my shop working on all makes, I have seen several instances where older cars OR higher mileage dirty fluid changes lead to nearly instant transmisison failure. If I get a 25yr car with low miles needing its first fluid change I wont even risk it. If I get a high mileage car with no history and dirty fluid I wont do it unless they insist after my warnings lol.
It's been a while, trans shifts soooo much smoother now.
when i bought my corolla the fluid of the transmission looks like it has not been changed in a minute, dark brownish color which doesnt smell like varnish. 198k motor and trans.
@@JalenRose02 Im not sure I would change it in your case. If its thin like water and brown with no sign of red, thats not great for changing, somewhat risky.
@@ripptydevibes2581 I'm praying to the toyota gods that I'll be alright 💀
@@ripptydevibes2581 my toyota corolla which is a 96 uses a dexron 2 but those don't exist anymore can use a valvo high mileage transmission fluid?
So i just checked Advance Auto parts and they showed Dextron and not Mercon? Can you tell me what is the Difference?
Mercon V is what this transmission specs. I don't know what you are working on so can't tell you.
Dextron is GM
Check your dipstick and/or the door sticker. Some of these F150's use Mercon V, and some use just Mercon (which is sold as Dex/Merc since they're the same). Mercon and Mercon V are NOT interchangeable.
My brothers mug shot was in that same exact shirt. ..
🤣
How can the oil still lubricate the gears? You should of used the cooler lines to pump it out so the pan will be empty when you remove it. You can try at 205 reseal for that leaking seal. You only got out like 40% of the old stuff opening the pan if you use the cooler line you can remove fluid and add new fluid until its clear red otherwise their is still old crap in their. Don't drop the pan every 1k just use the cooler line.
You have no idea how wrong you are 🤦♂️ He changed it perfectly. You don’t want to take out all of the old fluid genius
@@EricKirkland533 only if the fluid was never changed.
Ford built tough 💪 👍
I can't complain. Hope you had a good Canada Day up there Steve. Cheers
I'm Workin on an f150 with 265,000 on it. The fluid ain't even pink,so it's definitely filter and fluid time.
We call that old and nasty.
@@ozzstars_cars Definitely. This truck needs tlc. The oils filthy too. Smdh.
Dorman makes a transmission Pan with a drain plug That's what I use Or they sell a kit You could drill a drain plug in
Wouldn't it be nice if all manufactures put a transmission drain bolt in.
@@ozzstars_cars yes

I have a 01 2wd with the same tranny. I bought the truck used with 170,000 miles on it. I changed it myself and it looked horrible. I have no idea if anyone ever changed the fluid and filter. It was full of metal shavings and was thick and brown looking. It had no red tint left. Let’s just say your fluid looks a lot better than mine did 😅
Well now we both have clean red fluid.lol How's your transmission shifting now?
My 06 camry at 325k had orig starter alternator front end trans fluid and most all besides breaks tires radiator at 300k. Therefore I don't believe in changing fluid trans in my new camry
Good idea, I would agree.
Why would you? It’s at the end of its life anyways. It’s not even worth the cost of a flush lol
I drain and fill my transmission 3 times That gets out all the old Transmission fluid
You must be rich. That stuff has quadrupled in price.
@@donalddoty5768 It's a lot cheaper than buying a Transmission.
How’s that tranny holden up. I’m still debating doing the same service to my 20 yr old vic with 118000 miles.
Shifting smoother than it has in the past 10 years. The 1-2 and 2-3 are so much better.
@@ozzstars_cars Thank you sir, now I’ll definitely will do that service to the tranny… suscribed to your channel to educate, and learn from your videos… one last thing on my Vic I use motorcraft semi synthetic blend 5W 20, along with the motorcraft oil filter 820S. Should I keep using that or change the viscosity to 5W 30 and other brand of oil. Thank you for responding have a good day…
@Pedro Saenz I don't recall many cars back then using 5w20. Most were 5w30 and the owners manual or under hood dipstick should state the proper viscosity.
@@ozzstars_cars ok thank you
Yeah the fluid is deep purple
Using Amsoil or Purple Royal?
Proof you drive like a grandma👵😏
Well that depends if I'm wearing my Corvette wings or not. lol
Fluid that dirty and you didn't flush it?
Drain and refill.
When you flush the fluid is when you start having problems with the transmission. Better to drain and refill couple times till the fluid is fresh again.
@@ozzstars_cars when you say drain and refill do I have to also change the filter each time I do this? How many times to do a drain and refill, until the transmission fluid is the normal color?
@flowersfam3462 depends how dirty. I usually change the filter once, then next time just change the fluid only.
@@ozzstars_cars Thanks.

That Ford 4R70 transmission is larger than your work van Leon.
that pan gasket was reusable! all ford pan gaskets like that are reusable!
Not when it's 24 years old.
@@ozzstars_cars no it's still reusable. drain the torque converter when you do a pan change for 100% of the fluid.
Why would you use the old gasket when you can have a new one for a couple bucks? 🤔

I guess I'll do my 2000 ford expedition 4.6L V8 Triton XLT with 281k miles now since I saw your video. As a female, your video is easy to follow.😊
@flowersfam3462 with that mileage I would only change the fluid if there was already a shifting issue OR the transmission has had regular interval trans6 fluid changes.
Got a decent leak under the engine. We can't tell if it's oil or transmission fluid because of the age of the transmission fluid. It's brown semi translucent and about the consistency of oil and transmission fluid. 2003 f150 v8 4.6L 347k miles! Checked both dipsticks and both show very low.
