Those kicks no doubt resulted in long term injuries for which he will pay a long term price. So BJJ disproportionality practice way more then any other style in mixed rules, so of course they are going to understand how to counter other styles way better then most people who practice other things. If Boxers and kick boxers trained the way BJJ people do for UFC, we would most likely see a huge increase in strikers winning MMA matches

  • when you are allowed to strike, the striker doesn't need a mastery level of submission/takedown defense to neutralize a BJJ practitioner, since the BJJ practitioner is under huge threat from a dangerous striker's attacks. on the other hand, the BJJ practitioner can't defend against real dangerous striking unless he has very good striking (since you can't actually use plain defense against a real striker because you have to fight them off). if both practitioners learn fundamentals of the other's sport, the striker ends up as the better fighter in general. there was a misconception in the early days of BJJ when nobody knew basic defenses for it, but reality is once you know, it's not as dangerous as it used to be. in fact, if this wasn't a sanctioned match with rules, even during the transitions on the ground, he could've seriously wrecked the BJJ guy. On the ground, it's more efficient to use illegal moves while the BJJ guy is doing his proper transition techniques. In a real fight, you can f up BJJ guys when they're transitioning if you're really crazy.

    • Yeah that yk's shins are basically steel at this point checking one of his kick would have probably hurt Alex more than YK.

    • He's a good bjj fighter i saw that instantly when he ceased control in that ground/ grapple moments but he needs to add a standing offensive marital arts to his list like Kyokushin or better yet muay thay

    • Thing about most bjj guys, you need to be able to close the gap and get the takedown. Poor guy got leg kicked to death

  • they definitely didn't expect Y2K to have such tremendous takedown defense. what he lacks in BJJ, he compensates with pure brute, raw power. who tf does a front flip with a guy on his back trying to choke the life out of him? that's just some ridiculous strength, and those kicks remind me of prime buakaw. hats off to Alex for having the heart to go on!
