  • We just had a new white belt join our dojo. When we noticed that this guy moved way to purposefully to be a newbie. He was giving purple belts all they could handle. Turns out that he was a D1 wrestler from Iowa and coaches wrestling. He has a high gas tank and very explosive. He'll be crazy lethal once he starts picking up the nuances. He absorbs knowledge.

  • Oh man, I just loved the sequence where Paul did the backwards seatbelt roll yet you were still able to maintain your composure and snatch the kneebar as you were being rolled! Full disclosure, I've done the backwards seatbelt roll to people and it throws them off all the time because it usually leaves the recipient in a "What is happening right now?" state because people just really aren't used to going backwards, so I was just mind blown that you were already countering as you were being rolled backwards! Good job.

    • That roll looked like it was heavy for the neck? 2 people weight on it? Am I missing something? For me it is a risky move. I wouldnt do it to a partner in the gym. If angles go wrong.. bye bye

      @andersnilssondvm@andersnilssondvm11 ай бұрын
    • @andersnilssondvm I get where you are coming from. It is not dangerous because both people are rolling and the momentum keeps pressure from going on the neck. Where a problem would come in is if the person being rolled realizes it, panics and tries to forcefully stop it while the other person keeps rolling. Then it could be very bad because then the neck will absorb force. My own experience is that the movement is so fast that an experienced martial artist will just smartly roll with it as Jeff did here and keep going..

      @bronstet@bronstet11 ай бұрын
    • @@bronstet Thanks for the answer. Im a bit old so I try to avoid all roll on neck. I dont even invert =D I even tell people that if they tend to put me on my neck then I will tap very early/right away. i need to stop watch bjj injuries in youtube hahaha

      @andersnilssondvm@andersnilssondvm11 ай бұрын
    • @andersnilssondvm I totally get it. I have seen a couple of bad injuries live as well as after surgery results from ones I didn't witness but knew must have been bad just from seeing the person post surgery never being the same again. I have told all my instructors I will NEVER let it get to the point where I need surgery and will retire from martial arts before that happens. Fortunately I have kept both myself as well as all my training partners safe for over 20 years.

  • This is a great video contrasting styles. I will say that one of the biggest strengths of the wrestler is the conditioning. It's not just strength. There were some missed moves by the wrestler the was contributed by his conditioning (which you addressed). You can see that when Paul was handling you and doing well in the first sequence but disengaged. A wrestler in better shape would have continued picking you apart. When he flipped you over, that was a risky move. A great wrestler is going to take someone down. Takedowns in wrestling is also great to see. Just watch a prime Matt Hughes. Nevertheless, this was still good to see. Thanks for sharing.

The PE coach, who had been a college wrestler and football player, said that for every move, there is a counter, and whoever does their move better come out on top. I think this is especially true in any combat sport. If a wrestler is faster and applies their technique faster they will win against someone in BJJ. I also think one will compliment the other.
