The Sims 4 Eco Lifestyle Review: Gameplay Expectations and Reality

I got an opportunity to play with The Sims 4 Eco Lifestyle for a day before it came out thanks to EA Game Changers. My opinion is that some people will like this, but the things that aggravated me are sure to bother others so I'm sharing those feelings about its gameplay. I understand if you like this, and me not liking a few features does not invalidate your enjoyment.

There should have been at least one fistfight.

But its mostly for the build/buy and cas, i hardly ever use the "hero" of a pack (except for Vampires). My sims have never made wishes, they have never touched a murphy bed (that Maxis play was enough for me to know), they hardly ever go camping, they do yoga but never go to a spa, I think you see the way this is going. But I have used in building just about everything they've given us and as this is my only hobby, its worth the 40 bucks

    • OMG, I spent roughly 6 hours yesterday just trying to redesign the houses in the neighborhood to be more green... felt like a freakin' unpaid job just trying to have fun and get the eco footprint results I want... Only time will tell if I succeeded. T-T That dang meter moves WAY. TOO. FAST. It was halfway towards neutral in just 8 sim hours! not even a FULL DAY. I'm not saying I regret the purchase because I love the fizzer machine (fairly simple to use), off-the-grid/bill relationship, the potential to candle-make (haven't yet from lack of materials, but hopefully soon), and a few other new things, but that's so viciously inconvenient, how much you have to build and buy for the environment to stay or change the way you want it to. Have these developers ever even played this game themselves for longer than a sim hour?! I'm at a loss for words...

Even putting lots of industrial appliances in the lots didn’t do much as the builds were still build with green materials. She couldn’t get it industrial. So that means the world will become greener no matter what making the gameplay as inconsequential as the Sulani environment being set on a timer. Big uff.

    • Im sure the qa testers see the problems, the devs probably do to. I have a strong feeling its management and producers overriding them and fucking it up. The issue imo with the game is that the base features are not fleshed out enough, the sims feel cookie cutter and not like realistic personalities at all. The core gameplay is lacking, and thats not due to lack of skill, its because they are putting all their energy into making more and more packs, which is just like putting lipstick on a pig. whoever is in charge of deciding what the devs make for the game is the real issue. They need to focus on core gameplay if they want to fix the game, BUT that doesnt make as much money for EA sadly because sims fans will buy expansions no matter how much they suck. We speak with our wallets and all they hear is money rolling in.

    • Yeah, watching some other builders do their builds makes me wonder why they haven't maybe brought in these builders to build lots for their games to be released. The one made updated versions of the 3 Get to Work Career lots that look AMAZING and should definitely be the standard for builds packaged with the game instead of just to download off the gallery. I get it, they want to surprise everyone with the new packs, but when that surprise is overcome by disappointment in the way it actually turned out, was it worth it? The Sims has way too many possibilities to not get input from the players. Updates down the line help, but shouldn't be their only way to incorporate player ideas into the game.

    • I think a very telling example of how even on a very basic level there's no real thought put into the packs intersecting with each other is the fact that City Living's nerd festival will be completely ruined if it rains while it's going on. All the computers, TVs and videogames break in the rain, and unless you fix it yourself, it will stay that way until the end of the festival. You'd think, given that weather is the entire conceit of Seasons and it doesn't even have a world, they'd have a way to work around that but no. So little effort put into this that they didn't even consider how the festival would be affected by a pivotal expansion pack a majority of players own.

I don't hate the game overall by any means, but I find it frustrating that it constantly feels like the game is trying to push you to make everything perfect - traits that only really have upsides, easy-to-make relationships, no real consequences for your actions, easy to level up in careers, etc. And when it's not doing that, it's pushing you in a certain direction. The reason I love the Sims 3 is because it's a sandbox game - I can play the way I want to.

What if I wanted to clean the world by a group clean up in where I would have to gather friends and clean parks one at a time. What if I want to spread awareness by increasing my charisma and talking to other Sims to help clean, recycle or change a slobbish lifestyle. What if I wanted to invent a robot that would purify the air or recycle for me. Also Sims skilled in handiness could upgrade items and furniture to reduce power/water output. I just don’t understand the lack of sim input to better there environment and why it only was only applied to one world when Sims 3 into the future exist. Sure you have action plans that’s fine but why do I need them to better or worsen my own world.

  • Yeah I was also confused at first as to why the neighbourhood was improving from industrial in Port Promise when I had done everything I could think of to make it more industrial. Then, couple of days later it was neutral! It made me feel like they didn't give players a chance to fix it on their own rather than have it improve already based on the neighbours. Now I have to delete all Nox's eco-green stuff which is weird because he likes to be green so deleting all the windmills and stuff seems wrong while he's living there. Haha

  • Thanks Carl. Appreciate it. Stay critical. I can't help but imagine the current Sims team starts off with a word cloud of associations. Then a bunch of random ideas get thrown around and implemented without any focus on the core gameplay. Basically what little resources are poured into the game are lost on random fluff like head bag swatches, more casual CAS outfits (just uglier and worn poorly) and dumpster woohoo. Meanwhile the gameplay is a rehash of previous elements (holiday traditions, reputation, upgrading items) and has no impactful rewards. Why spend action points to get more action points? Why bother using any of the items (like My First Bug Stuff) if the footprint shifts automatically? Once again the focus seems to have been on what would look interesting in the trailer and reusing as much as possible in the process. I was expecting an upgrade of Island Living, but if you ignore bill-lowering items (zzz) it still feels like an extremely standalone DLC - except the world is uglier and makes less sense (why is it even polluted, how is the quarry so "green" yet depressing). No new vehicles or occults either or even just going around on motor boats in the (otherwise unused) harbour. I wish they had abandoned this idea like all economic activity abandoned each of the three Evergreen Harbor areas if they were not going to flesh it out beyond build mode items.

I tried the bug box, and the constant nurturing was a huge pain, and you're right, it's just weird! The candle making is overly complicated. Forcing recycling to be part of a sim's story line just to make candles doesn't make any sense. Sims should be able to buy the supplies they need. • I was really hoping that the Eco Footprint would give us a constant state of progression were we to opt into it by having our Sim influence their neighbours and local community lots to go for their desired Eco Foot Print and then work to maintain that state, but instead it ended up being a one and done job in Buy/Build Mode. Shame, for a second it really looked like this could give TS4's Live Mode gameplay a kick it needed. Fabulous pack for builders though. Also love the new additions to CAS, the new World and and general aesthetic. EDIT: Oh forgot to mention, I was a genuinely hoping for some sort of threat and competition in regards to N.A.P votes, talking to neighbours and votes coming up in conversation causing arguments, sudden spikes in the polls, y'know, some sort of drama to it to make your choice winning feeling like it required work, and wasn't just a predictable outcome.

And once again I thought they forgot they have a calendar and didn't make recycling a tradition until I watched your video and saw that it has to do with lot traits. I'm kind of disappointed right now. I only started playing last night and couldn't figure out much at all given I was trying to make Foundry Cove smoggy🤦🏾‍♀️. One thing I did see was snow falling in the desert (my game is on late fall - is that a thing or a glitch?). Will see if maybe making some lot changes, and making candles and fizzies will make it feel more worthwhile.

    @noasamuel3135@noasamuel31353 жыл бұрын
  • It amazes me people still buy packs on day one despite this game's lackluster features and this companies' reputation. This pack seems to have glaring problems that are a tradition at this point, such as: 1) They always do the bare minimum. Effectively, the effects of the environment are to the skybox ONLY. They made a smog skybox, they made an aurora skybox (weird, given this is a regional thing) and they made a Godrays skybox. WOW! That's it. This is the depth of this environmental system. It's pathetic, and it's clear this route was chosen because the skybox route requires minimal effort, whilst actual changes to the world objects or scenery demands effort. 2) For the life of them, they cannot figure out the Sims themselves need personality, not the features. Great example is the roughhousing NAP. Activate it and everyone's an asshole. The problem? Two dudes are hanging out at a bar being assholes. One decides he's going to go across the street to the park, in a separate neighborhood, and suddenly he's Mr. Rogers and would never fight ever. This is awful, this is inconsistent. Who the hell would want inconsistent characters? Why would I EVER activate this if I have a Good Sim where I care about character consistency? Our Sims don't have personalities, these very blatant programming algorithms do. Another problem is - and I don't even own this pack yet I'd bet my life savings on what I'm about to say - there's no special conditions for certain traits. I bet a Good sim will still be an asshole if Roughhousing is active. I bet a Jealous sim will still be carefree if that free love thing is active. There's no attention to detail and no care for Sim persona's given. It's like they think we simply crave the ABILITY to be an asshole, and not that we crave Sims that are undeniably assholes AT THEIR CORE AND BY DESIGN, which currently feels impossible to make, given their programming. 3) The above mentioned Neighborhood policies are a blatant copy-paste job. Tell me: what is the difference between these and clubs? The only difference is these affect the whole neighborhood and have limited choices, clubs affect 8 chosen people with more variety in what you can pick. They are blatantly copypasting features and reselling them. 4) The Sims 4 doesn't let us play, but rather it strives to tell us how to play. Best example is how he pointed out there's no lot trait to make a smoggy world, only one for clean. It's clear this pack has a bias towards a certain playstyle and not the other, and this isn't the first pack to do this. As a comparison, anyone played Fallout 4? A big criticism that game got is that the base game railroaded you into being a good person. You didn't really have many options to be bad, and the main quests assumed various motivations from you and that you were ALWAYS working in someone's best interests. You COULD be a bad guy, but it meant far less game content available. Bethesda heard the complaints, made a DLC where you could be the bad guy, and....royally fucked up again. This time the problem was the DLC FORCED YOU to be a bad guy, and if you insisted on being good, you basically missed out on the entire DLC and got one quest to kill all the bad guys. That's it. Sims 4 suffers the exact same problem as Fallout 4. No one on that team is actually CONSIDERING that some of us would like to be anything other than Captain Planet. They assume a motivation and an interest for us, then build a pack around it. The bitter irony is that of course Captain Planet needs a Pollution Patrol to oppose, otherwise Captain Planet sits around drinking lemonade and being bored because he's out of work. If we could make both of them, we could make our own stories about some kind of conflict. Instead, we're robbed of this, simply because the team is so one-dimensional, so incapable of sympathizing with potential consumer desires, and so uncreative that *they can't even figure out how to make good vs. evil.* And for God's sake man, it's a VIDEO GAME! The world isn't gonna actually die if we pollute in a fictional world. It's like they're so principled about their politics that they won't even allow the opposite. Sure enough, Sims 4 is a boring utopia where people smile so hard their mouths clip through their eyeballs. They're never gonna learn, they're never gonna change. Hell, given that some of these things boil down to blatant lapses in judgement or a sheer lack of creativity instead of actual technical limitations, I dare say this team isn't good enough to learn or change.

One thing I liked about Into the Future in TS3 was that you could choose between Utopia and Distopia with advantages and downsides on both ends - both had collectibles a plenty, just different kinds, and it affected the sim population even if differently. Here, what does it matter if it's Eco or Smog? The sims don't care all too much, the NAPs are all that seems to matter and you could have the same of the interactions ones with either Eco or Filthy neighborhood. It just feels thrown together

I appreciate the idea but the way they implement these features make the gameplay boring and a chore to go through without cheats. • This pack was a weird experience for me. When I was reading about its features, all I could think about was the complaints about how laundry day ended up (my own included) and what it could have been. I was glad to see that these good ideas had not been trashed. It gave me hope for the others that weren't picked. (Sorry, but the knitting pack gets me about as excited as the bowling pack forever ago. It is definitely a low point for me and especially from the complaints already, I don't think anyone is getting what they really want out of it.) I did not realize at the time that the pack had any hate. I was looking forward to seeing the feedback actualized and then all the early reviewers started hyping it up and people's opinions changed... And now we are here. I like Eco Lifestyle. I don't like the career unlock system (still dislike how you can only do one side from the base game) or any other nitpicky things, but seeing this from the beginning as the eco ideas being given their due was enough. The patch was good (hotfix required aside), off the grid is much more real, and while not hugely impactful I have another way to interact with the world. I understand the disappointment, really. Hype does that and who doesn't want more? My make it or break it pack every iteration is pets, and this version really gutted me. Still Eco Lifestyle is fun for me, even without earth shattering new mechanics. I never expected them.
