  • Guizhou and Yunnan are all mountainous areas. They used to be the poorest areas in China. Now these two provinces are the areas with the highest density of highways and the most bridges in China. Because of the improvement of transportation, these areas have become the areas with the fastest economic growth in China. I have driven almost all those bridges in Guizhou. You don't feel any fear when driving on the bridge because it's just a highway.

Both these bridges are hundreds of feet from the water surface and take like five to fifteen minutes from end to end. With earthquakes being so common here it really is scary. There's very little chance of surviving a three hundred foot fall.

Now I see the Sidu River Bridge and it dwarfs the Empire State Building like it was nothing. Oh, boy. America is done for when it comes to construction projects. The street in front of my house is filled with huge cracks and potholes, so I know America has just given up on doing things right. China is the construction king and that's that. America now only leads in crime and homelessness. What a fall from grace for a once-great country. Most of the bridges in NYC, where I live, are old and in disrepair. I suppose nothing good lasts forever.

  • I don't do bridges very well myself. When I was a kid my father liked to go across bridges with the car. At the Apex, he would always stop the car, and tell us to get out of the car to look over the side of the bridge. (read: Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, the Sunshine Skyway in Tampa, and a few others.) If he were alive today, I think he'd have a heyday with this list. I don't think I would do very well, looking over the sides of any on this list for sure.

  • I used to regularly cross the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway which is the longest bridge over continuous water (continuous). For eight miles you can't see either end. Barges would knock out a secton or two and cars would disappear one by one until someone saw one go over and stop traffic. One night a bus load of nuns went into the dark lake.

    • I drove over the Causeway 13 years ago while visiting family. You are right. When you get to the section you mention, no land ahead, same if you look in the rear view mirror. Looking around, it's like you are in the middle of the ocean, it was a bit terrifying, yet fascinating at the same time. If i remember correctly, it's like 24 miles across, took me about 21 minutes at approx 60mph.Even saved the toll receipt and had the camcorder running as i cross. Left from New Orleans, crossed over the Causeway, turned around and came back. Great experience.

    • @@ShadowHawk4219 I lived on the N. Shore and at night, I could tell I was about 5 miles from the N. end because my lungs would fill easier with that pine scented, ozone air. St. Tammany Parish has the second largest ozone belt behind Germany's Black Forest. Plants grow much faster in these zones.

    • @@RaymondCore If memory serves me correct (too lazy to look it up, just ask someone from the area). is the North end called Metarie?, that name is in my head. Hope to get back there and cross it again, on a clear day, this time not by myself, and not tell tell them where we're going, and scare the hell out of them when we cant see land, tell them i must have missed my turn.

  • I have walked across the Royal Gorge bridge in Colorado many times and it is truly awesome. I have also driven my motorcycle across that bridge - you do have to be very careful of the abundant pedestrian traffic. Contrary to popular belief you can continue driving once you make to the other side.
