3 EASY ways to wrap hands for boxing, MMA, and Muay Thai

There are tons of ways to wrap your wrists/hands with canvas wraps. Here are 3 simple ones. Shanghai based MMA coach Ramsey Dewey shows three different styles of hand wraps using 5 meter canvas wraps. The primary purpose of wrapping hands to secure and stabilize the wrist. The secondary purpose is to reinforce the hands while connecting the knuckles and metacarpals to the wrist. A tertiary (and optional) purpose of hand wraps I will show you in this video, is to pad the knuckles.
I strongly suggest you use wraps exclusively for bagwork and pad work, but not for sparring. If you are destroying your hands on your training partners face, you’re a bad sparring partner and it’s time to fix that.

    • @@granden2077 wrapping is 100% unnecessary if you are punching properly. that was the point of my comment. proper wrist alignment and fist formation greatly reduces the chances of injury. i actually hate boxing gloves because they make it impossible for you to make a proper fist thus making wraps necessary.

      @johnpjones1775@johnpjones17754 жыл бұрын
    • @@johnpjones1775 You can't box without boxing gloves. I have been doing bag work for about 40 years. No wraps when sparring or light work. When I am putting it on the bag or doing 1 minute rotations, hand wraps are a must. Saves on an injury that takes away from training. Even good fingerless gloves have wrist support.

  • #1 : very good metacarpal and small bones support but less knuckle cushion. Greatly lessens metacarpal injuries but knuckles might get sore quickly #2 : enough bone support with great knuckle cushion. Recommended for thinner gloves. Also good for power shots. But not recommended for sparring as you might feel too comfortable in giving out powershots. #3 : simple and fast, but less bone small bones protection as the wrap did not go between the fingers meaning if you punch too hard, the entire bone structure will have to absorb more force . Not recommended for power punches. But pretty ok for sparring. Based on my own experience between the different wraps. I often use #1 because i seem to not have very strong bones, i need that extra support, but i love #2 when i am so into smashing the bags with powershots. #3 is not suitable for me, my hand just got slight injury before .

  • hey, so i got a question... Been following you for a while and love all your stuff. You have several videos talking about sparring and whatnot and I just started training muay thai recently, and had my first sparring experience a couple weeks ago. I got a couple minor injuries: took a knee to the chest resulting in a contusion, and got a nasty leg kick to the left thigh. Couldn't walk on my left leg very well for 48 hours and couldn't run till the following wednesday (sparring was friday the week before), and my ribs are still bothering me a little (a full 2 weeks out), though pain is definitely no longer a hindrance. The ribs hurt like CRAZY up until about tuesday or wednesday following that sparring session, though. I have never had bruised ribs before, so I think I mostly just didn't know what was happening to my body and it was a little scary. There was no visible discoloration around the ribs, and the thigh only displayed discoloration for the first 24 hours or so after the injury was sustained. My question is: do these injuries, in your opinion, sound like they are reasonable, or more than I should be incurring from sparring? I got my chest x-rayed and nothing was broken, just internal bruising, and my leg definitely just had a knot in that thigh muscle for a while but it rehabbed fairly easily. I'm hopping around like a spring chicken now. However, I did kind of feel like I got into what you might call a full-contact sparring session without doing any touch or light-contact sparring first. It seemed like people were going a little harder than I expected they would. I got my face punched a lot with my head snapping back and had a slight headache afterward, in addition to the other stuff. I know i'm a newbie so a lot of this might just SEEM a certain way to me, though my judgement of how "appropriate" things are may not be accurate, and my defense is absolutely terrible. I'm not afraid of experiencing pain, but I want to make sure I'm being smart and preserving my health as much as possible, so I just wanted to share the injuries I sustained with you and see what you think just based on that since I trust your views based on your content. thank you for makin all the stuff. 👊

    @michaelknight6905@michaelknight69054 жыл бұрын
    • You should not be getting injured while sparring. You should not be sparring full contact, especially when you’re starting out. It’s bizarre to me how all these so called Muay Thai gyms out there don’t actually spar the Thai way (playing in the ring, very light, controlled, technical, touch sparring) and instead they get into full contact fights in the gym that no one is paying them for. You should be sparring at a level that you can repeat every single day. If every sparring session sends you to the hospital or lays you out for for a week, you will never log the number of hours of ring time you need to learn Muay Thai.

  • Thanks for showing the regular wrap AND the "Heavy Hitter" or heavy bag wrap. The basic wrap is also a good idea because some beginners get intimidated trying to do the regular wrap and this is a good first step. However... I STRONGLY disagree about not wrapping your hands for sparring, even light/technical sparring. Most of the wrist strains/sprains or finger problems I've seen come from people who don't wrap. I don't think that wrapping gives you "a pass" to hit your training partner like a ton of bricks either. You need Control with or without wraps.

The pair I have support my wrist just fine, but my knuckles will often be torn up to the point of bleeding after a heavy bag workout.

    @jameshawkins8817@jameshawkins88174 жыл бұрын
    • You can use all of these methods with canvas wraps that don’t stretch. Are you wearing gloves when you do your bag work? If so, and your knuckles are still bleeding, the way you have your wraps arranged around your knuckles may be cutting into your skin. Try method 3 without anything over the knuckles under your gloves and it should solve that problem.

  • hey Ramsey, i have 2 questions sorry for being greedy. 1. i have been training for a while now judo ,kickboxing ,bjj and now mma i am wanting to get more serious with MMA and debut in a few months, my conditioning is my biggest weakness but i am only able to train 2-3 times per week (at a Class) and the rest i have to do on my own in a relatively small amount of time, i already strength train but what would be the most effective way to condition at home in say 30 minutes, every day? i have a heavybag and some kettlebells and weights and a rope if you would incorporate any of that. 2. i work a manual job. if im feeling tired should i push myself to train or should i get some rest so i can have a more effective workout later, i tend to have trouble in figuring this out, somtimes i will just grind myself into the ground and then crash and then ill be lazy and keep saying ill do it later. wheres the balance beetween sustainable training and pushing yourself to excellence.

    • @Vagabond Art thanks yeah ive been good with other aspects of training at home everyday. strength, tecnique but its sometimes so hard to get motivated for a hardcore conditioning "cardio" endurance workout, i just went pretty hell for leather on the bag today for 3 rounds and tuckered myself out good though.

  • Yo, for the next Fantastic Fictional Fight Scenes explained you should check out Kanoh Agito vs Okubo Naoya from the series Kengan Asura. It has a great grappling sequence.

  • Hey Coach, what is your opinion and view on Lethwei? And do you think headbutts should also be legal in mma?

    @VincentMMALife@VincentMMALife4 жыл бұрын
    • Lethwei kind of bores me to be honest. Also, the double KO rule is really stupid. As far as MMA goes, I would love to see the original UFC tournament format and rule set again with modern fighters.

    • Well, spoiler alert: they’re garbage, and they don’t do what they say they will do- and even that promise of simulating elevation training is pretty worthless since any benefits derived from years of actual elevation training are gone within 48 hours of returning to sea level.

  • At 1m36s you wrap between your two end fingers. In your 2007 video "Making a fist, wrapping & taping hands, etc..." you specified to not wrap between the two end fingers due to knuckle alignment. Can/will you explain this change in your wrapping technique?
