The Walking Dead franchise is an American zombie apocalypse media franchise and a shared universe that is centered on a number of interconnected television series based on the comic book of the same name. Set in the fictional universe, the franchise has developed with crossover plot elements, settings, and characters that span four live-action television series, with three additional live-action television series in various stages of production, as well as eight live-action web series that tie in to the first two television series. The series aired on AMC and AMC+.
The comic book was adapted into the first television series, which debuted in October 2010. It was followed by Fear the Walking Dead in 2015. The franchise further expanded in 2020 with a new spin-off series titled The Walking Dead: World Beyond, and an anthology series titled Tales of the Walking Dead in 2022. By 2022, three new spin-offs were announced for main The Walking Dead characters: The Walking Dead: Dead City focusing on Negan and Maggie, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon focusing on Daryl, and an untitled Rick and Michonne spin-off series that was originally a trilogy of scrapped films.
Actors who have appeared in multiple series and web series include Andrew Lincoln, Lennie James, Melissa McBride, Tom Payne, Pollyanna McIntosh, Austin Amelio, Christine Evangelista, Noah Emmerich, Michelle Ang, Brendan Meyer, Nick Stahl, Maggie Grace, John Glover, Jeff Kober, Scarlett Blum, and Samantha Morton.
The Walking Dead is an American post-apocalyptic comic book series created by writer Robert Kirkman and artist Tony Moore - who was the artist on the first six issues and cover artist for the first twenty-four[1] - with art on the remainder of the series by Charlie Adlard.[2][3] Beginning in 2003 and published by Image Comics, the series ran for 193 issues, with Kirkman unexpectedly ending the series in 2019. Apart from a few specials, the comic was published primarily in black and white. It began publishing colorized versions issue by issue, colored by Dave McCaig, starting in October 2020.[4][5]
The comic book series focuses on Rick Grimes, a Kentucky deputy who is shot in the line of duty and awakens from a coma in a zombie apocalypse that has resulted in a state-wide quarantine. After joining with some other survivors, he gradually takes on the role of leader of a community as it struggles to survive the zombie apocalypse. The Walking Dead received the 2007 and 2010 Eisner Award for Best Continuing Series at San Diego Comic-Con International.
The AMC television series The Walking Dead (2010-2022) loosely follows the storyline of the comic book. The Walking Dead franchise has also spawned multiple additional media properties, including two companion television series (Fear the Walking Dead and The Walking Dead: World Beyond), eight webisode series, video games (starting with The Walking Dead: The Game), and various additional publications, including novels (starting with The Walking Dead: Rise of the Governor).
Kirkman was a fan of zombie films such as the Living Dead series and Zombi 2 as well as zombie video games such as Resident Evil.[6] The original pitch by Kirkman and Moore was for a followup to George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead, with the series taking place in the 1960s.[7] Image Comics co-founder Jim Valentino suggested using an original concept instead so the creators would own the property outright.[7] The pitch was revised into an original story, taking a more traditional approach to a modern zombie survival tale. The revised pitch was again rejected, however, for being too "normal". Kirkman then pitched it again with a new added twist that the plague was sent by aliens, and that the comic would be more of an alien invasion story. Kirkman had no intention of making the comic about aliens, but felt that the lie was necessary to get the comic published, which it did.[8]
The Walking Dead debuted in 2003, published by Image Comics, with art by Tony Moore for the first six issues and Cliff Rathburn shading the art after issue #5. Charlie Adlard took over as artist on issue #7, after he was approached by Kirkman.[3] Moore also created the cover art for the first 24 issues and the first four trade paperbacks. The remainder were done by Adlard. Most issues of the comic featured "Letter Hacks", several pages at the end where Kirkman discussed the issue, oftentimes answering letters, mail, and emails sent by readers of the comic.[9] Kirkman usually co-wrote the section with his editor, Sean Mackiewicz.
**MASSIVE SPOILERS IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THE BOOKS** Should Rick die in the show?
@@arfkhatlapoquty8406 I suppose thats a fair argument lmao
Nah, they already killed Carl so that wouldn't be cool. I now we still have Judith and stuff, but we already lost Rick once so no 👎 😕
I wouldn't say he should die, the comics have strayed to far for rick to die in the same way as it it currently is I don't think any other death would fit Rick.
I feel like ricks death in the comics was so stupid for such a big character death
@@elieppinette7707 That's exactly the point of his death, he's still human...
If the comics got an invincible like animated adaptation that completely adapts the comics, that would be sick
I worry that some corporate suit would get their hands on it and try and "diversify" the story.

The twd comics are a masterpiece and i feel we need comics that show what happend after rick died up to the point we see adult carl.
I just finished the comics and I would 100% read that
No, I don't think that would be good. It might tarnish the comics if done falsely.
@herschelschueler when I read Kirkman's comics I notice a theme that he does time skips at the end of series so I interpret this as him leaving room for him to do more and him not wanting to completely let go which leads me to believe he wouldn't allow it to dip if he continued the series
@@UnderSans7051 well that is a good point but I think it is mostly done so in order to avoid filler content and have the characters grow in a more natural way
@@UnderSans7051right. The whole reason he stopped was he didn't think he had a good enough idea to keep it going. I believe he could think of one though
I would love to see a character analysis of Clementine.
It would be interesting to see that especially with the multiple choices that change Lee and clementines development but difficult to make bc of the same multiple choices
I remember reading this not too long ago after finishing the invincible comic and holy crap I couldn't put it down and finished all the issues in less than 2 weeks, it was so damn good. Now while I haven't seen much of the show and I know not every adaptation is going to be 100% accurate I do know what essentially happens in the show and yeah... I definitely prefer the comic to the show. The Walking Dead comic is a masterpiece.
Exactly how I feel.
As much as I love the show. Nothing is every going to too ricks final speech in the commonwealth. Him stating how they can rebuild past the apocalypse lives rent free in my head for a while.
Exactly 💯 💯 💯 💯 💯! I think that Speech at the Commonwealth, was Far & Away Rick's Best Speech, Show & Comics, Hands Down!!
and of course the epic line of “We are not the walking dead!” Such an incredible full circle moment that was sadly missed out on in the show
The walking dead is a masterpiece.
2:25 & onwards THANK YOU!!! Yes! Finally someone liking uplifting scenes over depressing ones. Depressing scenarios have always been far too common.
i strongly disagree with this! with superhero movies and comics constantly faking people out with deaths, and then falling into the same rhythm of "hero faces what is supposed to be a fantastic villain that is incredibly powerful only to be defeated in the blink of an eyeand overcomes everything ever" not staying close to source material, and then the source material changing all together to fit the same positive narrative. walking dead falls into it too. people have become so engrossed in wanting positivity in dark scenarios, especially when it doesn't fit the tone of what something is supposed to be about, or injecting it into something. i.e "i can't believe glenn got killed in such a violent way in a comic that is supposed to be about how humans struggle to survive because of not only zombies, but OTHER HUMANS WHY DID HE DIE WAAHHH" like it's rather silly. i'm always genuinely curious as to why people purposely consume things that are laid out to be like that, and then are upset that they are? things are allowed to have positive outcomes where good triumphs over evil, and guess what, evil bad things are also allowed to happen in a fictional universe where it is laid out to not get attached to characters because they will struggle and die
@@bucky7505 I disagree
@@vergil_6707 that's fine! and i disagree with you (: but that's the beauty of opinions!
Just finished reading the comics today just wanna say this is peak character analysis id love another video on Carl or Andrea
It would be pretty awesome if they gave it another shot maybe like an animated series that's more close to the source material with a few changes
I loved this deep dive into the character of Rick Grimes. One of my favorites. Also, your videos get better every single upload!
Maybe it’s because I grew up watching the show, but I love it and the comics in different ways. I personally love how Carol’s story changed in the show and the addition of Daryl Dixon, but I also hate that we didn’t get to see Sophia the way she is in the comics, you know?
Or carl to that end
Daryl & Carol took Comics Characters' Storyline..wasn't good! Also, it was Horrific what they did to Comic Badass Andrea, on the Show! Ridiculous! I watched the Show first. Too, but, I really adhere to the Comics More, a Far Superior Storyline!
One thing I personally have to disagree with. I don't feel like Show Rick and Comic Rick are that much alike. That said, I love Andrew Lincoln as Rick in the show, but there are many key moments where their personalities don't line up much at all. Generally speaking, Comic Rick tends to be unhinged and fly off the handle more often than not whereas Show Rick has more of a slow-burn type of rage. I like both versions of Rick either way even though their character arcs differ a lot at points... and I wish I could say the same for Negan given that he's one of my favorite villains ever, but the show got the later parts of his character arc so wrong and mishandled his backstory horribly even though I think "Here's Negan" is still a great episode regardless.
comic rick has been through way more so his behavior is not surprising the comics overall is more realistic in terms of how people would behave if this was to actually happen the show has watered down too many things.
Comic Rick is smarter, more brutal, and much better as a character. Love Andrew Lincoln, but the shows writing was doodoo.
Completely agree about Negan!! And some Show Fans get so out of shape, because they don't get the Difference, that Comic Negan was!
@ryman1933 , I totally agree about Rick, but, Andy Lincoln does give good emotion.
Man... I can't wait to start this arc in my Comic Dub Series of TWD. This video has brought things up I've never considered before in the story. Thank you so bloody much for this awesome video!! You've just earned a sub!!!
Loved this one Always a treat to get a deeper narratively analytical video every once in a while
As a fan of the comics for years I appreciate you truly understand the comics and the fact you know they are 193 issues I can respect this video
Damn thing had to end before 200. I was so hyped thinking we had at least 7 more if not beyond that. When I read 193 I was kinda in shock at the abrupt end. Realistically though I think kirkman was smart to end it before it became convoluted like the show.
this makes me want to watch the show again
I just finished the books a few hours ago and this video was so well put together. I loved hearing you walk through the journey that i just went on with this character and his story and the walking dead will be one experience i never forget.
why these comics are so good they should make a TV show about it.
I hope one day when I’m old as hell, that they adapt the literal comic series into an actual show. I would’ve loved to see the prison arc go down the same way as it does in the comic. (Excluding carols death 😤)
Can't cherry pick the bits you want, its either all or nothing xD
I don't trust modern Robert Kirkman to do it justice
This video analyzation honestly deserves more views and likes. You’ve demonstrated a lot of good takes and deeper meanings.
You just earned a new subscriber! I guess I'll go and re-read my Walking Dead comics for the 20th time now. Thanx for the awesome video!
I really love comic Rick, he’s my favorite as well as the show but comic rick is a lot more interesting and even more believable, his comic version is much more interesting and very relatable, comic Rick is such an awesome main character!
Comic Rick has certainly gone through worse both physically and mentally. Having his hand chopped off, getting beaten up a number of times, having his knee get busted by Negan and still he survived through it all. I think what the biggest difference between the comic and show is that in the show, I felt like the characters were a little bit too safe at times. In the comics however, any character could die at any given moment. Comic Rick had to witness all of that, especially Lori and Judith's death.
I agree with you btw
Another Crisis BANGER
I truly wish I could read twd for the first time again.
Same. I read through it like once every year or so just to relive it. I just wish it didn't end so early, but I guess it was probably for the better, kirkman was probably out of ideas by that point and just wanted to lay the comic series to rest before it went downhill like the show did.
@@ryman1933 I'm glad he ended it on his own terms
@@triceratroytv2292 I am too honestly. Better to end it on a good note than let it drag on and become convoluted like the tv shows storyline was.
I caught up to the comic when they were at issue 75, bought every issue day of release from that point on. Looked forward to it every month, look back so fondly on those times! There's some slow portions of the comic but it's so consistently amazing!
Seeing people make videos about twd comics will always bring a smile to my face
I still say they should come out with an animated Walking Dead show that’s true to the comics
I think that would be cool too, but I have a horrible fear that some corporate suits will get their hands on it and force changes like the show did.
Most comics should be adapted in animation. I so scared about the Something Is Killing The Children show since it's going to be live action

The comics' dialogues were so much better than in the series.
The comic characters were grounded and believable characters. The show just managed to do everything the comic did but worse. Except maybe Shanes character.

Sad how the worst representation of something is usually the most mainstream/popular. The comics and books are leagues better than the show could ever dream of being.
I just want to say, a little late, that I massively appreciate this video. The show really eclipses the source material a lot and it’s a shame because the TWD comics are fantastic. So I thank you for making this
I have to say I loved Tony Moores art style in the first portion of the comics and was sad to see him go, but Charlie Adlard did a pretty damn good job aswell

In my personal opinion: they aged like fine wine. Also a note on the layout of your videos: I would strongly suggest changing the intro of your videos. I’m not sure if you're aware, but when you hover over a video you get a preview of what the video entails. For me it’s the first few seconds of that specific video. This is just a suggestion but I’d suggest putting your current intros as your outros. The first few seconds of your video should be about your content. You need a hook to get your viewers invested and curious about your topic. The KZheadr Shadomech does this really well with his “100 days survival” series. His intros are perfect to get your attention and get you excited for what’s about to happen. Your intro is, no offense, basic. You’re asking people to subscribe and shit, everyone does that. And it’s kind of a given that you’re posting often if you’re a KZhead channel. You don’t have to tell us that. If you had started the video at :31 that would have been the perfect start to your video. Tbh you didn’t get my attention in the first seconds of your video, I click on this video cause I love the comics and the walking dead. And I also wanted to make this comment. Your content is good, I like the video, I just think you should change the intro, cause that’s ONE of the most important parts of a video. Food for thought. Great work so far!
Good ol' Grimey
Rick Grimes died in his coma, what we see, he’s in Hell.
I would like to see more video s of the comics since im too lazy to read but am also upset about the show being shit half way through
The comic was absolutely AMAZING. It is such a good read. And most of all, NO DARYL DIXON!!!! Oh yeah, losin lydia was fuckeddddddd in the comic
People hype daryl up a lot and I never understand why. He was a cool character in the early seasons, but people and the show thinking that daryl could fill the shoes of Rick Grimes? That's laughable. Honestly, I think the only reason people like daryl so much is because they are coping with the fact that all the original good characters are gone basically.
I remember as a kid reading the first issue and loving it. I shouldve gotten into it more tho
After seeing the invincibles show, i want a TWD comic animation series that sticks close to the source material.
I watched the show 1st loved it then read the comics they are much better

Odd pairing
Untill 10:49 there are no tangible reasons why comic is better. Actually is depicted as a brave man who care for the group. Just the continuity his past life...
The comics had a few mistakes but yeah it’s definitely not as inconsistent, messy or low budget as the show was.😅
God bless you all ❤ Much love
The walking peak
the problem with the TV show absolutely came down to the characters they offed and when they did it. both andrea and lori went on to play VERY important parts in the series but it feels like the show killed them because they had bad fan reception. especially next to glenn or daryl, people fucking HATED andrea and lori the first two seasons and instead of giving them any sort of redemption they just killed them to make it easier. then you have them killing jesus and carl in the later seasons simple so they can keep up with the shock factor of other shows like game of thrones. however daryl got to grunt his way through the last six seasons so yay!!
Showrunner Glen Mazzara intentionally messed with Comics Badass Andrea's Character...it was him...Mazzara was Fired.😅
As much as i love AMC's interpretation of The Walking Dead, I can't help but wonder what the hell happened along the way that made it end up so different from the source material I really need to buy the entire 190+ box set series of comics lol, hopefully one day
The show went down the saddest route it could have. It really depresses me how badly they ruined it.
Not wanting to pay Chandler Riggs and killing off Carl is what truly killed it in my opinion. Carl is way too vital to the overall story to properly move the show along without him.
The problem with the show is that, it didn’t end where it should have
comic rick inspired me

I saw tobey x andrew in no way home in 0.25x and tobey speed is impressive. Andrew starts the jump first, in 0.25x you can see andrew in the air and tobey don't start his jump yet and andrew landed on the table witch make he landed first and even with this advantages tobey shoot him first we can see andrew's hand ready from another attack. Do you read the Deluxe versions of the comics? The colorized ones?
Where did you get all the colored pannels
They started releasing new comics where they are colored.
Honestly, what's so impressive, particularly about the comic book ending. Is that the TV show and especially the comic book is so shocking, horrific and depressing that most people assumed that was going to have that type of ending as like it's most extreme at the end where once again kirkman defined all expectations turned the entire ending on its head by making it an actual happy hopeful ending and thus immediately making you recontextualize the entire series you had been reading. It was fucking brilliant and while I wish the TV show stuck the landing a bit better, I think it had nearly the same effect.

who else cried when Andrea died?
Didn't cry but I was pretty upset. She was one of the best characters. Rick never can have a happy relationship for too long, but at least Andrea being the badass she was went out relatively peacefully in her own home. Much better than what they did with Andreas character on the show, they ruined her so bad.
Rick man is the goat
The show is better 90% of the time especially any time the comics are bad or can be improved the show is far superior. The terminus stuff, the whisperers, the cdc, etc. Plus the comics don't have Andrew "Lincoln" clutterbuck (lol if u didn't know that's his real name) which already makes the show better. At least until he's gone 😞
