Replay value is a bit silly innit. I never got the obsession with how many hours you can milk out of a video game. The more I like a game, the less likely I am to ever play it more than once. Even if I haven't platinumed it. And yes that does mean I despite every game I play replay often (Dark Souls included). Also play NieR: Automata, I ain't asking.

I admire Souls games having stories as deep and confusing as the Bible, but also the general story for the average player being "You're undead, go punch some idiots and touch flame".
Mainly confusing... Idk, story wise no souls game kisses the feet of good jrpgs in my book.

My way to "replay" my favourite games is to watch a friend play through them. While it's not the same experience, I find it really fun to see how they react and feel about these games, discuss it with them and maybe gain a new perspective or appreciation for them.

Yeah same, but I’ve got stubborn friends who don’t play anything outside of their comfort subgenres (platform fighters in particular)
I do the same by watching KZhead streamers playing the game for the first time.
I did this with every single game with my 2 best friends. I played the entire assassins creed franchise 4 times. As well as bioshock and metal gear solid
The strat with the NieR games is you play it, beat it, don’t play it for like 10 years, and then play it again. Literally such an incredible and unforgettable experience to replay it after a long time

I can't relate. I beat Nier Automata in the spring, got all Playstation trophies over the summer, and still wanna beat it a third time. I love that game.

As a cs:go player with over 11k hours, I can confirm, I hate this game from the bottom of my heart. Elden ring & sekiro are my fav games.

Fair enough. I got maybe 2k hours in overwatch and have deleted it at least 4 times. Got 130 in Elden ring and won’t touch it until the DLC drops and then never again after that.

In my experience, I had so much more fun on my second playthrough of Sekiro and Bloodborne. I think the fact that I was much more comfortable with the game mechanics the second time around gave me more time and space to really enjoy the game's art style and depth.
Complete opposite for me, a first playthrough of a Soulsborne game is the best. I can't even get through a second playthrough. Because i already know what's around the next corner, i know the boss which is coming up. I know the Trap that's going to happen, I know the next area. Not knowing what coming next is the most fun for me. A second playthrough has 0 of that.

For me, souls games aren't about the difficulty or struggle because I'm just ridiculously good at that kind of combat from playing absurd amounts of Monster Hunter for a long time (which honestly gets far more difficult than Fromsoft games ever have) Because of this, repeat playthroughs are my most memorable ones because I start to understand the story and themes on a deeper level and can appreciate what an incredible work of art it is. It just gets better the deeper you analyze it

I'm almost 3 years out from NieR, and I will be replaying it when i get there. Some games are like good books and are enjoyable to experience again at subsequent points in life.
This me w fallout series especially 3 and NV. Every once in a blue moon I like to reply the game. Classic I grew up w as a kid

My first playthrough of breath of the wild and elden ring were like the greatest gaming experiences of my life. On replay I still really enjoyed them, but it didn't have the same magic.
That's interesting. I did three BotW playthroughs in 2017, a standard one, a tutorial then go straight to Ganon one, and a Master Mode 100% run. The third one was probably the most fun I had with the game, that was a blast up until the very end.
Yeah, with Totk, I didn't find myself enjoying myself as much, because both games have very similar characters, and locations. I have about 350 hours in BotW, but only about 70 in totk, which is the time it took for me to complete the main story as slowly as possible. Even with all the new mechanics, I felt like there was no point to continue playing. I'll revisit BotW in a few years, but I don't think I'll revisit TotK.

As a person that has constantly played and replayed the Jak and Daxter trilogy, I think it's very interesting to see how one's experience and perspective of a story changes as a person grows and changes. It's like every time I replay it I notice a new detail, a new clue, a new narrative perspective that I didn't have or even knew how to notice when I was a kid or a teen or even just a year ago. I think replaying games can be a beautiful experience especially when the stage you are in your life changes your perspective of a story giving you multiple storys in one.

When you first play a masterpiece you go in blind, every new discovery brings you wonder and awe, you play it for hours, days, weeks with the same level of excitement until it's over. Upon replaying you don't have the same feelings, you tend to maybe pay attention more to the fine details perhaps even nitpick, in some cases you might end up wondering why you thought it was a masterpiece to begin with. I play a masterpiece once, maybe twice if it has a multiplayer or a sandbox but generally only once, and then I place it in a special place in my mind where it will be immortalised forever
The best thing about having adhd is you miss out on so many details, to the point where replaying a game feels like your playing an entirely new game.. That's the benefit that I see from it anyways. Like im replaying mass effect trilogy for the 3rd time and there's still so much details I missed out on and things I didnt understand previously
Certain RPGs have huge replay value IMO. For my first Cyberpunk playthrough I did male streetkid netrunner with a lot of stealth usage. A few years later I could do a female corpo V that's more of a direct melee fighter while also chosing different dialogue options and choices. And I don't even want to start about the endless possbilities in Baldur's Gate 3.
Haven't even watched the video and I already relate to the title so much. After I played Disco Elysium, it completely changed my view on art forever. Yet I have never not even once wanted to play the game again. Even after I tried to force myself to play it, I couldn't. Yet I think about it all day! It is a very strange feeling, but one I feel good about. It's almost a deep bond you make with that piece of art. You don't even *need* to re-experience it because of the impact it made on you as a person. Funnily enough my second favorite game of all time, Lisa the painful, is a game I replayed a lot. 100% it even, including the secret boss. But that game is a masterpiece at rpg replayability, so I'm not surprised it was easy to go back into. Wish people just took a risk for once and just see game's as an experience and not a smart investment. They can have a deep impact on your very essence of being, and in a way no other medium can do...
Maybe you just have ADHD, and your brain only had enough bandwidth for one full play through of something that requires a good amount of attention, and the thought of having to sit through all the dialogue, giving you lore background, just sounds like a hassle. But then again, I'm biased af considering my pfp

And my first playthrough was almost 60 hours long, and I was playing it on a TV so shit it was actively painful to even read the damn game(VA made it better). I'll admit at a certain point I simply ended the adventure short since I was tired, I didn't play another game but DE for those aforementioned 60 hours, I legitimately was tired. Why are you so aggressive tho lol, like damn we're supposed to be encouraging people to play the game not actively gatekeep and calling people "retarded" for not playing the game like you did. That actively goes against the creators wishes, he himself wanted the game to be as accessible language wise as possible without compromising on the artistic merit, which it succeeded. But people like you scare newcomers off by making it seems like it's a Rick and Morty fan episode type deal, when in reality it is a much more profoundly beautiful experience that anything else I've personally seen. Maybe I took your comment in the wrong light in which case apologies, but this just seems uncalled for....

Literally me with BotW. You can really only explore Hyrule once. Even TotK, which I think is a better game than BotW in pretty much every aspect, doesn't bring that same feeling of going on an adventure just because it's 50% the same game as BotW.
I got so bored with all the games I had that I ended up downloading Skyrim for the first time since ten years ago. Turns out they had added a survival mode, changed a LOT of the gameplay for me. I’ve been playing for about 30 hours now and I’ve barely touched the main quest line because it’s in an area that is very difficult to survive in. While the world, plot, and fighting mechanics are still the same, it feels like a new game because of how radically different this playthrough is compared to my original. Thought I’d mention this since the timing of this vid was pretty coincidental

What do you mean by Survival mode? Eat, sleep, temperature (cold), diseases? I’m looking for game like that. Games today is too easy for me.
@@Katniss0000 yep, all the above! For example, being hungry decreases attack speed and available stamina, and your vision goes red. Being tired reduces available mp and stealth, and makes your vision blurry. Cold is the worst by far though, and you’ll have to play it to find out ;)

Personally the most replayable story games are the ones with a strong message, one that inspires me. Whenever I feel down or lost in life, I replay these games to help me keep going and grow as a person. My three favorite examples are Persona 5 Royal, Yakuza 7 and Zelda Majora's Mask.

I think this phenomenon happens due to the fact that meaningful things always come to an end. Even our lives. Stuff that sticks with you can't be around forever, and stuff with infinite replayability won't have as strong of an impression.

Bloodborne is my all time favorite video game, the amount of hours I’ve sunk into the game is insane. It’s the only game I’ve ever replayed this much, I value it beyond comprehension because it was there when I was at my absolute lowest, damn near suicide kind of low. But Bloodborne taught me so much, it isnt even a game to me anymore, it’s an experience and a savior.

One type of "replayability" exists within very well-made games; finding the little details and foreshadowing you missed on your first playthrough. I only played Omori once, but every time I watched a friend play through the game, I found all kinds of things that are totally different when you understand the whole context of the story. Another example is Prey, where (slight spoilers) there are clues that hint that you're being lied to/oddities, such as a cookbook in the kitchen that references a book that came out one year later than the actual year you're supposed to be in.

It's funny I played it 4 years ago I got a steam deck oled and I'm going through route A again only just to get a retaste. But he's right I don't want to play the whole game again I feel like the idea of the game in my head is what I want to stick. I love the game so much but I don't want to replay it.
It's my favourite game as well. I've played it like 4/5 times total and this video helped me realize that it's time to delete it and let it go, it's not fun anymore and I don't want to like it any less because I'm playing it too often

everytime i replay my old favorites i end up loving them more and end up appreciating them even more now that I've aged and matured and understand concepts that were nonexistent to my youthful brain at the time, to each their own i suppose🤷♂️
sometimes playing old games from memory destroys my view of the game because my brain for some reason makes it seem like it was a top tier game with stunning graphics and cool story but it turns out it was bloody mary on roblox all along
This is a good vid. One point for myself on the topic is just the pursue of the next heavy hitter. Finding the next hitter to you. Especially with series or following a developer that can make you play games you never would've found. So spending time on those games again when it could be something new and thought provoking is why I also find myself not replaying games that I love and that.
I'm so glad you made this video. In 2020 during the pandemic, I wanted to try Bloodborne again (which at the time was my first "soulsborne") because I've never finished it because I couldn't get into it when it released. In two months I platinum'd the game and it became one of the best gaming experiences of my life, by then I understood the appeal of souls games and it quickly became one of my favorite games of all time. A couple of years pass, having beaten DS1, DS3, Sekiro and Elden Ring now, I wanted to play Bloodborne again with a different build this year, and it did not go well. For some reason, I wasn't enjoying the game and the spark I had when I played it the first time wasn't really feeling it. I kinda got stupidly depressed because I knew at that moment that the same feeling I had 100%ing the game was gone. But thanks to this video, I knew that even that feeling was gone, the memory where the platinum trophy showed up and when I beat the fucking Orphan of Kos for the first time remains in my brain and in my heart. And for that it's currently still my favorite "soulsborne" game.
I played Undertale for the first time a year ago while knowing nothing of it, but knowing there was a very difficult pacifist run. That single run of walkthroughs and only maybe an hour or two of play inbetween college work has been my only run, and perhaps one of my most memorable experiences.
same!! i went back into it once, intending to do another pacifist route but then got hit with the “they’re all happy”, cried, and turned it off
I understand this perspective cause i have some games i absolutely adore but only had fun the first time like the yakuza series or some survival horror games but for me i only consider games my favorites when i wanna play them again and again. Short or long, easy or hard, as long as i can always come back and not be bored of it then its definitely one of my favorites. Monster Hunter and armored core are examples of that.
completely agree, i can never call any piece of media, game or otherwise, my favorite unless i have consumed it multiple times, but i can still see where nasu is coming from. persona 5 is one of my favorite games of all time, and while i think royal is better, a part of me wishes my first experience with the game was the royal version as ill never get the chance to play that game for the first time ever again, but that doesnt stop me from loving the game on my 10th playthrough.

Very well done video and really agree with almost everything you said… but the one thing that I think is interesting about playing a narrative focused game after some time is perspective. Sure some thing’s might not live up to the Rose Color but once you get back into the story, you find it hits you differently or you see/understand differently. As you live life the things you go through not only changes you but also how you see things. It’s fascinating to go back and experience something with perspective, especial video games.

I'm surprised you didnt go more in depth with "challenge" runs when it comes to the speedrunning community. It really does add a lot of replay value to games I love and lets me experience them in a new more challenging way. Playing games I love fast again is usually more fun than starting a new one Ive never played, If you always search for a new game to love, you will have to go through a lot of games you don't love!
Speedrunners are a bunch of nerds without a job or another hobby. Nobody cares about that bs.
It’s interesting to see this perspective, I feel similar to how u do in souls games. Kingdom hearts 2 is my favorite game, and I think each subsequent playthrough has given me a mostly fresh experience growing from standard to proud to crit and most strongly level 1 crit. It’s the type of game where I get a lot of fun/satisfaction learning more about and improving in. And the game length isn’t as much as one of my other favorites, Persona 5, so the replay value is more manageable.
Worth noting that after I finish the super bosses on lv 1 crit I probably won’t go back for a long time
This was a really cool watch. Recently started learning low level game dev, and the points you brought up here are really good. I will definitely be coming back to this one a few times, a bit further down the road. My fave game was Star Ocean 2: The Second Story, for PS1. Which recently got a remake, but I haven't touched it. Free time is going to learning code.
I love this. I resonate especially with how you describe your feelings about Automata, having played it to completion twice. One to get to Ending E, and another just to get all the achievements. I'd come back to it on occasion because there is also a bit of world-building done with its intel logs and item descriptions, but I don't really see myself playing it all again in its entirety any time soon. And I'd say the exact same thing about Spec Ops: The Line. That one had a really profound effect on how I see games and pretty much any other media I consume, but its brutal, introspective, and insanely heavy storytelling is really something you can only truly experience once. It's good to know that there's folks out there who aren't buying into this insanity that even singleplayer games HAVE to be massive, HAVE to be open world, or HAVE to be endlessly replayable. Earned a new sub, my guy. I'm loving Elden Ring right now because it does have so much unique content that I wanna comb through, and even on NG+, I'm still discovering a lot of new questlines, unique bosses, and entire areas I missed out on during my first run, so there's vast amounts of it that actually are fresh. But I'd still absolutely put Sekiro above it as my favorite FromSoftware game specifically because it's a shorter, more focused experience. Helps that it has Reflections and a Gauntlets mode that lets you just fight bosses you've already beaten again any time you want without going through every single ending again.
I personally thank you for this video because this topic has always been in my mind and seeing someone to do it justice really feels great. This video really encapsulates how I feel about not replaying some of my favorite games and deeming it as a waste of time. Unless there is a gameplay value to be taken from it, the idea of doing the same thing again just seems pointless. For example I've poured little less than 200 hours in Elden Ring, exploring every bit of space, obtaining almost every item etc. Sure, fighting some bosses still have a gameplay value but I would rather not start a whole playthrough for it, especially when the game itself duplicates most of the main bosses anyway(unlike DS series). But, on the contrary, I've played Sekiro 3 times in total. Reason for this was that this game is not open world and relatively a short game, have an incredibly demanding combat that you get accustomed to with your each playthrough (especially after the first), introduction of Kuro's Charm in NG+ that forces you to take different approaches to your newly inherited combat style of focusing on parries, and the complete stealth mechanic that you can abuse with items like ceramic shard, whistle ring, ninjutsu techniques etc. So you are very right. Both of these games have different approaches to replay value and it doesn't make them inherently better or worse. It's just their design and not some sort of a criteria to give points to.
It's my belief that video games, like all other forms of media, are experiences. Some pieces scratch different itches and some I can boot back up to enjoy after my initial playthrough/watch/read/whatever. Some I can't. You phrased How I personally feel pretty eloquently: We often try to recapture that feeling or moment when we first experienced something that was profound and feel that wonder or magic once again, but we can never quite reach those same heights. It's OK to experience something only once. It's OK to leave a narrative at a certain ending or conclusion that you feel is best or most impactful for you. I personally did this with Fire Emblem: Three Houses by only playing through the Blue Lions route blindly. The narrative experience I had left it extraordinarily difficult for me to pick a different route to play because I felt like the story I helped tell was rich and complete.
Pretty much how I feel my favorite game is red dead redemption 2 yet anytime i try to replay it i stop after day one. But I can replay old COD campaigns all day long.
100% the reason while I’ve loved getting the Platinum on both Horizon games but only played the Last of Us 1 twice and Part 2 once. Certain games are like movies to me, where I prefer to resonate with the experience of playing with them and listen to other people talk about/appreciate vs going back and getting back in game. You do that too many times and the special feelings *can start to go away. Super super dope video!

NieR: Automata is also my favorite game, and I've actually replayed it like 6 or 7 times, my most recent playthrough being a few months ago. For me not only do I just find the gameplay fun, but every time I replayed it I picked up on something new that I never experienced. For example the first time I played it, I didn't see the (spoilers) scene with 9S grieving in the lunar tear room. I do understand it though. Some things just weren't really made to be replayed. Alongside NieR Automata I also consider Umineko to be one of the most important stories I've ever experienced, but I feel no need to spend 100 more hours to re-read it. I feel like it was in my last playthrough of NieR that I decided that it would kind of be my "goodbye" to the game. It sucks because you never know the next time you'll find something as incredible as NieR, Umineko, etc. Sometimes I feel like I can't find much enjoyment in a lot of things anymore because it's as if I'm on the search for the next big "thing" that really speaks to me, and the games I play just constantly fall short. Maybe I just need to take a step back and try to enjoy things for what they are.
Started Dead Space Remake two days ago just before this video came out. Basically it is me replaying the 2008 masterpiece just as it came out. At the time, I was 14 years old and I still fondly remember the feeling that it gave me. My anticipation for the game was through the roof, and I devoured all content related to it before I could finally play it. It is not exactly the same as replaying your favourite game, but a remake gives just another reason to visit an old favourite which a fresh coat on.

I personally couldn't get into it but it's worth a try) • return of the obra dinn • this war of mine • signalis • silent hill 2 ( 1,3 and 4 are great as well) • VTMB • Dark souls (the original /and bloodborne if you were unfortunate enough to buy a ps4 like me) • max payne 1/2 • fallout 1/2/NV • MGS 2/3 • cruelty squad • deus ex • spec ops the line Got a bit gameplay heavy at the end there lol. That's kinda crazy with the soulsborne games. Replaying soulsborne games is part of the fun. Doing different builds etc. I replayed dark souls 1 2 times,bloodborne 3 times and sekiro 3 times. I would agree on not Replaying elden ring tho

It's such a weird fine line. I played nier automata a while ago, loved it, and haven't played it since. But my actual 2 favorites of all time (Sekiro and Bloodborne) I have hundreds of hours on, I guess for me it comes down to how much I'm willing to ignore the narrative in order to get that gameplay loop. Anyway, awesome video as usual, this channel doesn't miss, you always make me start doing some insightful thinking.
Definitely one of my all time favourite games is Journey. Nothing will ever beat that first play through, learning the puzzles, seeing the beautiful art and exploring the areas for the first time. But I think it's because of that first experience I love the game so much. I wont be able to recreate the feelings I felt the first time I played Journey, but I can always cherish that first play through and love the game for what it is.
I pretty much agree for the most part, I just replayed games like NieR:Automata and Persona 5 Royal more recently cause I let it sit for a little while after my first experience, it was worth it Also I can tell you NieR:Replicant is very well worth it as someone who also got it day 1

This video hits way to hard, it reminds me of the time I played God of war 2015 and how revolutionary the graphics where to me back then, but I come back every now and then even knowing I'll never feel the same way my past self felt. But I accept that fact.
I replayed the game this summer on PS5 in 2023. Even after initially playing the game once on launch, playing the game with higher resolution and framerate really goes a long way of showing just how different a game can feel

This was me with Elden Ring, my first time playing was such an amazing experience, thinking you'd made decent progress but then unlocking new portions of the map and seeing just how much more there was to explore, I'll never forget that. While I did replay the game a good bit and enjoy it, as you said it was mainly for the gameplay, the exploration and wonder aspect of it was gone. It feels like two separate games at this point, with the experience of my first playthrough being locked away in my memories.
That keyboard is so cool dude. Same favorite game here, tried replaying Nier Automata again a few days ago but felt content just fishing in the world as all the memories came back to me.

Nier: Automata kind of ruined me for a solid couple weeks. I remember being so upset right before the part with A2 and then getting ending E made it all worth it though, I get goosebumps thinking about watching those credits roll again and seeing all the other players who helped. I know I can't really play it again either and it kind of hurts in a strange way, but I think in this case if you love something sometimes you gotta let it go, which is the whole lesson at the end. Let go of your save data so others can join you. Now when I want that feeling again I listen to the soundtrack and get those goosebumps back. Thank you for making this video. This is the kind of content I would love to see more of.
That was everyone. I had the luck of playing it on release, and every single person was like "man....." After that game, I went and played planescape: torment, still considered the best writing in any game. Then I read berserk and NGE. Needless to say my whole spring/summer was in existential crisis.
Personally, I think that even if you can't re-experience the magic of something you really enjoyed the first time, it doesn't it mean it isn't enjoyable to go through it again, nor does it mean you can't learn to appreciate certain nuances and details you missed the first time. I've watched Lincoln, my favorite film, at least 4 times and thoroughly enjoyed myself on each go. I have over 600 hours in Elden Ring not only because I like the builds and bosses and gaining mastery of both, but because the beauty, atmosphere, and story of its world are still compelling to re-experience. Hell, exploring the levels is my favorite aspect of these games and I've still cleared out all the legacy dungeons top to bottom at least 8 times. There are also the 'Stairway to Heaven' ones; artistic pieces that become favorites overtime rather than immediately. Mass Effect 2 and Monster Hunter: World are that for me. Also, most of the Soulsborne games became my favorites after the first time, but they honestly got even better on subsequent runs. Again, it's the idea of appreciating and noticing things you didn't the first time. Basically, I get your view and I understand where you're coming from, but for people like me, our favorite works of art are those that we have interacted with more times than others, not because of "inherent replay value", nor because we want to feel the magic again, but because they are still very enjoyable - and familiar - experiences that we are always happy to go through again. It's why you will find many people who have replayed their favorite linear narrative games with mediocre gameplay multiple times. For example, like Bricky who's played The Last of Us at least 7 times (or was it a dozen?). Hell, it's far from my favorite, but even I have two playthroughs of it, and both were fun. Sorry, that was long. I'm really shit at being concise.

I agree with your thoughts, especially on backlogs of games I plan to replay but can't seem to. Many experiences aren't the same after the initial playthrough. I'm just not motivated to replay them again, although I absolutely LOVE them.
I actually like the idea of revisiting games or media I hold dear to me. It gives me an opportunity to experience it with context and perspective I didn't have when I first played them. Revisiting MGS3 was a boon for me as I learned how to play around with the mechanics and appreciate its campy nature, I wasn't taking it too seriously and appreciated its homage to James Bond. FFX had Tidus, whom I could relate to when I was younger and then I became an adult and now I aspire to be someone like Yuna. My first and return experiences never really felt inferior over the other, since I'm getting older I was able to prioritise which qualities these games have that speak to me more. I didn't like them less I just changed what I think matters in those games now. They have flaws and I like that I can still appreciate them while acknowledging those imperfections. In several years I'm going to be a different person again and feel differently about them. Maybe in future playthroughs I'll have a better understanding of death and legacy.
I played Nier Automata when it first came out and completed it. A few years later I played it again just to do it all again. Now it has been 3 years (again) and I will replay it again since the last time. I don't see it bad to replay your video games but I feel like you shouldn't replay it like you do as a multiplayer game or a roguelike game.
such an interesting topic, everyone has a different perspective but can’t quite word it. I also loved Nier automata, but i’ve lost the spark for it half way through the 9S play through, i kept telling myself i’ll play it soon but i never got to it, and it’s been half a decade since. the souls genre has been something i consistently revisited through out the years.

Yea I lowkey envy people that didn't experience Silent Hill 2 yet. My way of somewhat reliving the first playthrough of a game is to watch someone else go through it, probably someone close to me like my lil bro or my girlfriend then it becomes a different kind of exciting and really fun. Especially in games like Lisa: the painful where what you do makes a pretty big difference later on so the first run of someone else is different than the one I had

I actually finished my very first playthrough of Silent Hill 2 not too long ago. The Enhanced edition is awesome and I definitely recommend it to other people. It was an interesting experience and I ended up loving it by the end. Not sure if I'll get the other endings atm, but I'm satisfied with what I played. Hopefully the remake is actually good because the original is something special.
I think I had an incredible idea when I started Elden Ring (my first souls game) I loved it and I wanted to do all the other souls but an Elden Ring boss was emblematic for me and it's malenia I decided to do the whole game leaving only this last dungeon where malenia is with the aim of finishing all the other souls before being able to do this famous fight and so for several me I have finished elden ring but not entirely which means that I didn't have this feeling of emptiness after finishing a masterclass and even today I still have plenty of souls left before I can overcome this malenia and the idea of 'still having a long way to go before I can finally finish elden ring motivates me and gives me the pleasure of playing I think it's one of the best feelings I've had in the world of video games (it's a google translate text so my bad if there is error)

Great video on a topic that I've thought about but couldn't really put into words myself. What I'd like to add is that this has changed from when I was a child to becoming an adult... Back then when the original xbox was the newest console on the market I would endlessly replay games like Darkwatch, Metal Arms, Gun, Beyond Good & Evil... all of which are linear more or less storydriven games with next to 0 replay value. Nowadays I feel a lot more like you, there are many many games that I finished only once and like your portal 2 example, when I go back my interest in playing dies quickly... and yet I don't regret a single purchase.
I think the second or third replay is fine, especially if you let enough time go by that it feels fresh and new. But if you keep replaying it I think you run the risk of "wearing it out". I'd also argue that if you haven't played your favorite game in over five-ten years, it's difficult for you to argue why it's your favorite outside of nostalgia. Kingdom Hearts 1 is my favorite and I replay it once a year. I'm always amazed at how well it's aged and can argue on a fundamental objective level why it's my favorite. Without just saying yeah I played it as a kid so it's got a special place in my heart.
NieR Replicant reframes so much of the story that parts of NieR Automata will feel like playing it for the first time again.
damn, subbed and even hit that bell for the notifications yet youtube still didn't tell me that new Nasu dropped as for the premise, I feel like there's a difference between a favorite game and your current main game. A game like CSGO has a gameplay loop that is engaging and easy to come back to as the element of randomness introduced by other players keeps it from getting stale. But that doesn't elevate it beyond the quality of games like BG3.
Man this video hit me at the perfect time. I've recently realised that the time I spend replaying games doesn't seem to fulfil me the same way that new experiences do. I understand your hesitance to replay nier as I have similar feelings toward Persona 4. In many ways it was a seminal game for me and the worry that it won't hit the same way keeps me from booting up the Golden version for the first time.
Tbh what makes me want to replay the game is to do other social links and get the best ending(even though I got spoiled). But you can not pay me to replay p5 again

I want to personally thank you for putting this perspective into an easily understandable video format. I'm in my late 30s and still a part time gamer, needless to say I have a ton of games I consider masterpieces, but I seldomly replay them. I feel like I should replay them just because I valued them so highly and not replaying them by spending my time with new games somehow feels doing those masterpieces a disservice. That has always bothered me and I havn't really thought about why that is. But watching your video made me understand, and moreso 'forgive' myself for not replaying titles that I felt had a life-changing impact on my life. Thanks.

Intriguing idea for a video. Outer Wilds is probably my favourite game, largely because of how well it set out to make every hour of its playtime enjoyable. Yet I’ve spent far more hours on games I enjoy much less.
For comparison: Dota 2 is probably my most played game at 2000+ hours and yet I sometimes hate it. I’d probably say Dragon’s Dogma is my favourite *game* game and even then I have no more than 200 hours on it and probably won’t play it much more.
Just started Nier automata myself. Really loving the game so far. About 8-9ish hours in but I’m trying to take my time with it. Can’t wait to experience what all the hype is about!
Ive always struggled to think of what my "Favorite" game is but i think you hit the nail on the head by saying youd willingly memory wipe to experience automota again. As someone whos always wanted to design and make games tabletop rpgs or video games, dark souls 1 was beautiful knowing that a japanese company made a weird existential medieval western fantasy about how everything has to come to an end at some point. It helped me find my passion in games a step forward no matter what because no matter how strange the concept someone out there might fall in love with it.
100% agree. I never replay games and yet if I made a top 10 list all of my favorites would be linear story driven games. How they make me feel in that moment is more important than how many total hours I play or how many times I can replay them.

I could never do that. If I love something, I want to understand it more. A lot of the knowledge I have about... Honestly many different subjects, a lot of came from just really looking into all the games, books, music etc. that I really enjoyed. When you learn about the artistic process, listen to artists talk about their work and research the different ideas that come up in the art you consume, it can send you down a rabbit hole where you come out smarter than you were before, in ways you will not expect. Nier: Automata is a prime example: I only love it more every time I replay it, and every time, I understand its philosophy a little more. I owe a lot to the art I grew up with and to my curiosity about how and why it all worked. Everyone enjoys things their own way, I don't mean to say my way works for everyone, but I would never want to just play a beloved game just once.
Wish I had that mindset, I find it almost impossible to replay something unless I add an additional challenge or mod it. Even worse if I stop playing it for more then a couple weeks it's hard to pick it back up even if I was enjoying it, has happened to me countless times. Same with Movies, books, TV shows & KZhead videos.
Many people's favourite/masterpiece game is Undertale, Undertale is one of the very rare cases when most people will want to replay the game or else they will still be in a risk of spoiling the important events
Replaying Ghost of Tsushima now and I'm picking up exactly what you are laying down. I got the plat my first time through and loved every bit of it. Now, it kind of feels like a slog. I mean it makes sense that you’d spend the most amount of time on the more addictive things. And for something to be addictive it needs to be simple and easy to enjoy. It takes effort to enjoy things. And the higher quality something is, the more there is to recognise, analyse and enjoy. And whether we’d like to admit it or not, I think we’re lazy creatures and have a bias for the easiest option I mean I’d say I prefer dark chocolate to milk because there’s just more going on. But I’ve eaten waaay more milk chocolate because it’s simpler, more eatable and just more addictive. But I’m more likely to reminisce over the best chocolate I’ve eaten rather than the chocolate I’ve eaten the most And I guess there’s also a factor of “too much of a good thing can be bad” at play; The more we consume something the less special it becomes. Our favourite is our favourite because it was a special event. There’s some things we like that we do regularly for comfort, I guess, but they aren’t particularly special. Like I’m chewing gum rn, and I do quite a lot, but I wouldn’t say it’s my favourite thing to do or anything. Like I like doing it but there’s nothing special about it that warrants it being labelled as better than everything else
Replaying Nier Automata is like living your love breakup time, you are sad how its ended and love the journey. No one want to experience that feeling, even while listening to Neir OST triggers its storyline and make our heart break.

This is currently how i feel with The Witcher 3, I always put it as one of my top 5 games because my first playthrough was so incredible, I've beaten it twice and haven't touched it in near 5 years, Ended up buying the complete edition because it includes the DLCs which i never experienced, But it ended up collecting dust. Finally just a few days ago i decided to play it again, I've gotten about 15 hours in and while i still love it, I sort of feel like I'm just forcing myself to keep playing at this point, I still haven't got to the DLCs yet, And there's just so many quests I'm kinda getting overwhelmed, I already have the perfect memory of this game, But back then it was all new to me and i had no issue taking my sweet time doing every little thing the game had to offer, Now i feel like im doing myself a disservice rushing thru it, I thought i was ready to finally experience it again but as it stands i kinda feel like moving on to something else for the time being. Its still one of my all time favorites, I'm not gonna play through it again just trying to double down on something I'm already set on.
I think you can play the Dlc directly from the main menu.
Games like this are never as good on subsequent playthroughs.
That’s why there is an option to play to create a save file that starts you off as level 30 to do the dlc. I luckily had the chance to fully play through the game and it’s dlcs in one playthrough and its my favourite game of all time but I don’t know if I will ever replay it because my playthrough took 150 hours.
Replaying a loved title years after can often make me feel like the game loses some of its magic. It's very weird but a consistent thing for me. For example, I replayed pokemon soul silver after like 7 years of not touching it and I no longer feels its as great as I remembered (although it's still amazing). Sometimes you just need to let a game go and cherish the memories you've had with it.
This is why I hear people use to say "I wish I could play X for the first time again" because nothing beats the genuine interest and investment in a blind play through. But I feel like half of the problem of losing the magic comes from how time is invested in a second play through and when you choose to do it

I've never played Hellblade Senuas Sacrifice since my first playthrough. It was a game that really affected me, but I don't think I could ever have that same experience again. You perfectly articulated that feeling
My problem is the love I use to have for playing videos games is really not there anymore 😅. I’m 23 and tbh video games is like smoking weed nowadays. The anxiety, the pressure, and stress to spend money and to play in this generation is what I think is a problem for a lot of peoples mental health. I like your videos so far, but I feel like your title doesn't match as you tend to go really broad and branch out into multiple surrounding topics. Idrk if it makes sense to never go back to a game, UNLESS you've exhausted it. Like I remember more than 100%ing, playing a game by your own rules, limitations, finding glitches and easter eggs, playing with friends, solo, online, creating content of it and in it, etc. At a certain point I can just never go back to it bc there's basically nothing left there for me. But not replaying a game just because it might spoil my memory of it? Nah that's dumb. Bc with any media, sometimes revisiting it untints our glasses, and other times it makes that rose color even more saturated. Have you never gone back to a game/thing after forever and liked it even better? (Usually as a kid vs when you're older.) I've had it go both ways, hate it to love it, and vice versa.

Nasu's Problems with souls-like game help me understand my soul-like itch, and why i'm suffering from it for no reason. Since then it magically solve my problem and I get to enjoy games from different genres again.
