Everyone loves to play their favorite video games... I mean they're "favorites" for a reason. But what if you could experience your favorites again.. remade. Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, Pokémon, Metal Gear, among other major titles. We've been seeing a LOT of remakes and remasters lately. Why is that. Is it all good? All bad? Let's talk about it. Spoiler alert, it's somewhere in the middle.

  • Actually Final Fantasy 7's remake was pushed away for the longest time. Square Enix kept denying making that throughout all of 6th gen and 7th gen. This is due to Square wanting to make other games (FF10, FF11, FF12, FF13, FF14, FF15) instead of going back to the well. they only caved in because the original devs who worked on it were started to realize they were getting old and the window for them to remake it was closing. This is why they didn't announce it until 2015

    • I always thought the FFVII Remake should have been more like the Resident Evil Remake for the GameCube, with all the pre-rendered background being more detailed as well as the characters models. But I think that would have been difficult since FFVII's asthetics have changed since the release of Advent Children, I mean the original FFVII was very cartoony, or should I say anime, don't think Nomura was going for a realistic artstyle, I think that was a reason why the game took so much time to be made, since they had to find a new look more consistent with the spin-offs Now I'm wondering if Square is planning on remaking previous FF titles, there's some rumors about FFIX remake. On the Enix side of the company we have more remakes of the Dragon Quest series, with DQIII remake being made in a HD-2D style, I wonder if Square has considered remaking one of the first 6 FF games in that style as well

    • I have a little theory that it's also partly because of Sakurai. When he asked to include Cloud in Smash 4 Square Enix initially wanted to make him put Noctus in the game instead since he was the most recent protagonist. But Sakurai refused and replied that a lot more people knew about Cloud and would be a better representative to the entire FF franchise. I think Sakurai's words was a wake up call for Square Enix that made them realise that they were leaving money on the table by leaving their most iconic entry in the series untouched for so long and ignoring the fans request for a remake.

      @wintersong2266@wintersong226611 ай бұрын
    • @@wintersong2266 actually Sakurai met with Tetsuya Nomura about bringing a Final Fantasy character to Smash and Cloud was Sakurai's first choice, Nomura told him “are you sure you’re okay with Cloud? He’s not a character from a new game, after all", but Sakurai responded "if you think about who to add from FF, it’s hard to come up with a choice that’s not Cloud". Sakurai other options were Bartz from FFV and Terra from FFVI, but he thought people wouldn't know who they were, and while at the time FFVII never appeard on a Nintendo console, Cloud was the most recognizable character from the most popular game in the series, so that's why he choose him, and at least Cloud appeared in two games on Nintendo systems (Kingdom Hearts and Theatrhythm). Though it's kind of sad that the only FF representation in Smash comes from FFVII, Joker came with tracks from P3 and P4 and Hero represents DQIII, IV, VIII and XI. Same thing with Ryu and Ken, they only represent SFII while Terry has music from plenty of SNK games and Kazuya has tracks from all of the main Tekken games.

There's a whole new generation of game devs that are just focused on enhancing someone else's work rather than bringing a whole new creation into existence. It's not Resident Evil 4 Remake. It's just Resident Evil 4. When you search for RE4 now you'll get a mismosh of both games but favors the new game so get fucked if you're playing the original. This is a trend that goes outside games and is why as a fan of MGS I'm immediately okay with whatever Konami does to MGS3. Simply because the game is not called MGS3. It's subtle but makes a huge difference to me.

    • I'm also on the younger age group of RE fans but prefer the older games. I was only 5 when RE4 came out and wasn't even born when RE2 was released. I do remember my brother playing RE1 on our childhood and I rediscovered the RE franchise around 2014-2015 and made me a fan of the franchise ever since. Even though I couldn't afford the games and I didn't own a PC/console (only watched my brother play pirated versions lol) then, I fell in love with the lore and characters and would spend hours reading on Wikis, forums, and watch gameplays and cutscenes in KZhead. I do wish they would port the old games on modern consoles. I agree with what you say that many people are treating the remakes as replacements, and the changes in the storylines and character motivations and personalities in the remakes feel like the OG stories and characters are being retconned. I saw so many arguments of people not understanding the characters and story, like for example with regards to Leon and Ada's dynamics. A lot of people that only played RE2 remake are questioning the relationship between these two since the remake made Ada manipulative and callous towards Leon. Whereas in the original, Ada, while being undercover, was a very gentle, calm, but secretive and mysterious character who likes to run away from the eager Leon for the sake of accomplishing her mission. Not to mention they also replaced her canon death too from Leon B scenario, which she died by saving Leon from the Tyrant. Their relationship in the OG is what made their chemistry palpable in the OG RE4. The problem with remaking RE is that the OG timeline is yet to be given proper resolution especially after RE6 left us hanging since RE7 just gave us a new story and character. Thus doing more remakes will certainly come off as rewriting the whole lore of the OG.

      @key5270@key527011 ай бұрын

  • Thats the thing with the gaming industry nowdays, where mobile games make almost 50% of all the profits in the whole industry and most AAA studios/publishers are publicly traded companies with investors that want as insane profits as possible with little investments, so what do studios decide to do? Instead of trying to create something new which takes time and effort, just recycle the old stuff that people love, costs less money to make and generates good profits. This is why becoming a publicly traded gaming company/studio in 90% of the cases means death of all passion from that studio which is a shame. Now remakes and remasters have their place, there are many beloved games that aren't or are hardly accessible anymore but what is happening now is just milking of an almost dead cow. Great video!

  • Its a dicey road to begin on. I often times used to equate remasters as being akin to movies going from dvd to high definition. You were getting the same work of art, just upscaled and refined for modern displays. In the case of games that might involve fixing bugs, reconfiguring the prior controls, but as you've illustrated it sometimes goes well beyond that and suddenly words like remake or being thrown into the conversation as well. Then you reach a certain point where the latest release of a certain game, is vastly different from its original iteration. From a historical angle, it creates a headache to say the least when trying to explain to oneself how a series began, to what it is now.

  • Remakes happen imo because when technology was newer it didnt allow some games to do what Devs actually imagined. My favorite examples are final fantasy games. Im confident turn based rpgs originally were a product of restriction rather than solely game design. The other half is from the consumer view point. We all pictured in our mind how for ex. turn based combat ACTUALLY looks in real time or how certain blocky characters would look with greater detail. Thats why things like advent children had awe factors. With all that said the last part is devs & consumer have a limited amount of time in life. & most have SOME desire to relieve what they used picture in thier minds but this time in actuality. Its a power emotion that cant blame anyone for possessing.

  • I think youre right that FF7R was well within its rights to expand and make additions to the plot, and honestly seeing the entire compilation seamlessly incorporated into the plot, worldbuiliding and character roster would have been the best case scenario. Be that as it may, theres elements of FF7 that I would consider integral to the experience that I think FF7R has basically abandoned. While Kitase himself basically said they didnt think they could do the mystery part of sephiroth anymore because of how iconic he is, in reality all they needed to do was translate the originals perfect execution of this aspect into the new gameplay and engine and they would have been able to maintain this experience for the new audience while still delivering something new to long time fans. Sephiroths characterisation is one of those integral parts and I think regardless of his pop culture status the mystery and power surrounding him should have been maintained. Instead they have irreversibly cucked him by putting him front and centre as well as having you beat him not a quarter of the way through the story. The Kalm flashback where hes in your party and the migar zolom impalement scene cannot realistically have any weight following part 1. The irritating thing about this new characterisation is that it stems from this widespread idiotic obsession with novelty, where everything has to be a subversion or 'fresh' to keep people interested, which is ironic because people want to experience this novelty through nostalgic experiences via remakes. Its pretty ass backwards and isnt a sustainable direction for games to go in. Doesn't matter now, sqenix fanboys and fangirls will happily pay $70 to play the next artificially fluffed entry so they can argue on twitter over which two male characters are definitely gay and a 'canon ship', everything about FF7R just reminds me of Third Birthday, which is to say, Nomura and Kitase have tried to recreate one of Sakaguchi's masterpieces for a modern audience before and it essentially led to the culling of the Parasite Eve franchise, make of that what you will.

    @FahrenheitEX@FahrenheitEX11 ай бұрын
    • Yea, FFVIIR essentially abandons the concept of a remake about halfway through - and especially by the end (on a faithful one at least); with the diversions and changes they make earlier in the game it's basically acting as a meta-commentary on the concept of remakes. And I can see how that can come across as pretentious or needless, and I think an good argument can definitely be made on false-advertising -and I think a good well-realized high budget remake can happen. But as to someone who was disillusioned to the concept of remakes, as "replacements' especially, I was completely down with what they were doing. I am completely down; it's not a remake, it's a re-visit a "new-experience". And I can really see how that can end up still just being a huge dissapointment

    • @@thatothertypeofstyrofoam4176 While I dont think the writing is good even if you ignore the context its in, i definitely think it would have been better for them to just do a full on meta sequel if thats what they wanted because Im kind of sick of remake culture as well. Main issue is that they wanted to have a big memorable twist by revealing the twist inside a supposed remake and I would argue that at the very least its improper use of the ip to tell a fruitless story but realistically it is more like false advertising on a massive scale. What they should have done is make an expanded remake that is faithful to the original game but expands and includes elements from the compilation, because something of that scope really would have been incredible. Then if they still wanted to do their meta spin off cringe they could have made that into their shitty mobile gacha instead of what theyre currently doing.

    • So well said. This subversion garbage is outta hand. A remake of such a beloved title like FF7 should absolutely keep the core story and just flesh out what wasn't able to be done w/ the medium at the time. Like greater worldbuilding and character background/development, more backstory. To 'remake' it as they have comes off as hubris that they know better than the OG Sakaguchi.

  • The current biggest problem with remakes is the idea of companies making their own games outdated in the process. This is most apparent with MGS Delta and the new Persona 3 remake. The Twin Snakes remade the first in a way that many didn't like, however it was still its own thing and the original was just as playable. However, rather than remaking Sons of Liberty, they decided on Snake Eater because it's more popular, thus making 2 the most outdated game in the series. Now if people want to get into the series, they'll be jumping from a 6th generation game to a 9th generation one, then back to a 7th generation one for Guns of the Patriots. Persona 3 is even worse. The "modern" Persona games have been milked drier than a Popeyes biscuit with no Sprite, however instead of going back and remaking, or even remastering, the original two games for a new audience, they're just going back to Persona 3. This, along with the re-release on PC and Xbox, will mean there will be four versions of Persona 3, none of which will be definitive because they lack content like the remake, graphics like Portable, or the option for a female character like FES. Don't forget how this will mean Persona 4 is now the most outdated of the three, and despite only getting a PC release a few years ago will probably be remade, making the multiple versions of Persona 5 the most outdated and 😵 It's a mess. How come Dino Crisis wasn't remade instead of Resident Evil 4?

Remakes don’t try to replace the original but recontextualises it for a new era. It’s the same reason games once hailed as classics simply aren’t good or playable anymore. Not because they haven’t aged well but because the factors that made them groundbreaking at the time have been expanded on much further only thanks to the original’s influence itself.

I would like to add, however, that you mainly approach the value of remakes from the point of view of older gamers and/or gamers who already played the original. But i would also like to add the value of younger gamers. I have been holding of on a lot of classic games that are consistently mentioned as all time greats but that are older than 15 years old. Most of the time when i try those, i get disappointed and bored. The game play is to cluncky, stiff and often slow pased. And some of them look so outdated that they are completely immersion breaking. Here, a remake can offer a worthwhile solution

Many old games are just "unplayable" for those kinds of peope, for the same reasons why some younger kids can't get into the original star wars movies despite them being very good movies especially at the time. I think this argument was not neciserally "lacking" from your video, but i do think it wasn't really highlighted and the main focus was on the "older" generation of gamers, which is understandable as you yourself belong amongst that group

I don't think either remake is bad, but at the end of the day they are remakes. I would have zero issues if we also got great new games but we don't really. I'm less mad at Capcom because they actually release new RE games and they are pretty good (nothing like RE4 but still good efforts) but EA can go fuck straight the hell off, they haven't released an actual worthwhile game in forever. 2023 is a laughably overrated year in videogames, I get the majority of game players today are probably the ones that grew up with PS4 so they don't know any better, but for us old as fuck videogame fans the decline is as clear as day.

  • Remakes in video games can be a boon. Often times older story based games were very limited in the avenues to express emotion. A remake can greatly improve those aspects. This also gives smaller studios the opportunity to build technical talent and pay the bills. That said, that is NOT why most remakes are made today. When a game is less than 20 years old, you don't need a remake, you need a port. Edit: you didn't have to come for my wig with the Mister Mosquito line.

  • This video is perfect because I was thinking lately how everyone trashes a certain remake I played. Well two of them. One of them I liked and the other was just [Ok]. These remakes are Yakuza Kiwami 2 and Resident Evil 3 Remake. Now for context I never played either or the original RE3 or Yak 2. So jumping into these games were supposed to be a new experience while I played plenty of the other classic games in their franchise, these are both games from these franchises I never touched...so what did I think of them. Well first let's talk about Resident Evil 3 Remake. This game was Okay to me. It wasn't a bad game per day but it felt so short lived. Like I legitimately told a friend I never finished RE3 remake and need to go back to finishing it. But to my surprise when I went to load an old save I went back to the last level and had new game + already unlocked. And then I remembered! "Holy shit...I did finish this game!" But the ending was so unmemorable and just outright not as good as RE2 remake. That I simply just didn't remember it. And upon me realizing how short the game actually was. I didn't mean to beat it so fast but I did. And thought I didn't. But let's talk about... Yakuza Kiwami 2. This game...is a game I love! So much so that it's in my top Yakuza games. right after 5 and 0. But I hear other people trashing it as a remake. But to me I didn't get that experience because again I never played the original. So to me this game felt perfect I mean absolutely perfect in almost every regard. Its just a game I can go back to and play but wait a second...what's the difference between the remake of Kiwami 2 and RE3. Why is it that I love one and hate the other. And I think the problem is, is that While Kiwami 2 might not be a GREAT remake. It's a GREAT game. Whole RE3 isn't either it's not a good Remake nor is it a particularly a great game either. Don't get me wrong it's not a bad game. I had still had fun with it. But my overall experience with RE3R was..."it was alright." So to me Remakes feel like they have a lot to live up to. You have to bring new fans who never played the original. But you also have to bring in old fans who loved the original. So when I look at this video it explains why Kiwami 2 was so divisive in the community. Kiwami 2 was simply a great game & hit all the spots that a game needs to be, to be good. While RE3remake didn't do either. So thanks for this!

Also I see so many gamers asking and begging for ports or remakes of old games, I guess that tells you how bad most modern games are then. Personally I want new games or sequels, but I'm also guilty of buying a port or remake as well since it can be easy to missed out on a game 10-30 years ago.

  • Uhm, part of what you were talking about the MESS that is the FF7 Remake reminded me of the Fullmetal Alchemist 2003/Brotherhood situation. Brotherhood's 1° season is a shorten version of the season the 2003 anime covered which were loyal to the manga. Cuz that, Brotherhood's season 1 is kinda rushed to the point many of its emotional points don't worke very well for a new audience. A friend of mine decided to ignore the 2003 anime and watch straight Brotherhood, and he didn't understand why everybody was saying the girl & dog and Maes were such emotional points to the story. Why? Cuz in Brotherhood, those were very rushed, almost like the studio (which was the same one who did the 2003 anime) expected its audience to already know those stories. IMO, that was a horrible decision by the studio

    @massaosaito4084@massaosaito408411 ай бұрын
    • It's almost an artifact of the original series that the dog and Maes have that much of an impact in the story as very quickly they ran out of Manga to adapt so everything that was an adaptation had more room to breathe. Brotherhood more closely alots time to those story beats as they are represented in the Manga. They aren't exactly insignificant, but they don't get near the same emphasis as the original animation gives them. FMA was just a rare case of an anime that had competent filler writers more than anything! 😅

      @rogown2@rogown211 ай бұрын
    • coming from someone who watched the Brotherhood first, I still got emotional with the story of Maes, girl & dog. While watching it, I never get the sense that they are rushed. If anything, maybe the problem lies with constantly comparing two works side by side while watching it. You can't enjoy 1 thing to fullest if you constantly look at the other side

    • Yeah pretty sure Brotherhood was made with the expectation that you've already watched FMA 2003. The first 10-20ish eps, everything up until Hughes... yknow, was done much better in 2003. But in Brotherhood they speedrun through that to get to the new stuff. Ideal watch order imo is those first several eps from 2003 and then jump to brotherhood

  • The best solution to the PC replacement problem is to delist the original version but package it in with the remaster or remake as a free download. That'd solve the problem of us losing access to the original version and it'd solve the problem of some people buying that instead of the shiny new more expensive version.

  • Having watched all your videos, I did not see this take coming. Then again, I was probably projecting. I'm 37 and played the original when I was 14 or so. I've wanted a remake ever since Sony teased us with that PS3 tech demo, but I wanted it to be more like a remaster. I was OK with all kinds of updates to gameplay, but touching the story was taboo. When I played the demo section of the remake I was ecstatic. _That_ was everything I wanted. Especially the boss fight. But then ghosts started showing up. And Cloud's visions were _advent childreny._ Then Sephiroth started showing up out of turn and talking as if he'd already lived through the original. Hell, he almost seemed aware of our reality and his popularity here. Aerith too. The remake feels worse than a sidequel. It feels like a fanfic. "… and they changed fate and _everyone_ lived! Even Zack!" When I was a kid, the internet (i.e., GameFAQs) was full of fake ways to resurrect Aerith … because a main character dying for good in a JRPG blew our little teenage minds. Yes, it made no sense how Sephiroth appeared outta the blue like villain ex machina and skewered Aerith, but I'll be damned if it wasn't effective! If they'd followed the original story, I'd have even forgiven the boring slow walking sections and the lame ass quests involving chores 😩

  • It’s important to remember that while yes, many remasters and remakes are being released and worked on, more games are being made than ever, which means that we are still getting as many new games as we used to, even if it doesn’t feel like it. Although I do feel like it would be better to re release older games on new hardware, especially when a remake isn’t necessary, which would allow new fans to enjoy the old game, and new games to be focused on, rather than commuting to making a complete reimagined version of said game.

    @-Sheva-@-Sheva-11 ай бұрын
    • I think that remasters/remakes should be done only when it's necessary. The Last of Us Part 1 is the perfect example of a unnecessary remake/remaster. There hasn't any need for that game and yet they still did it... But the recent remakes of RE games are a great example for doing remakes/remasters at the right time: with the RE4 remake ending, I'll be happy to see RE5 and RE6 remade, with certainty that they'll fix the mistakes of the OG versions.

      @matheusbarbosa999@matheusbarbosa99911 ай бұрын
    • @@matheusbarbosa999 I very much agree with you on that. Remakes should be done when necessary to update an older game to be more accessible for the current gaming market/bring it up to modern standards. Remasters should be done simply to make older games available on current hardware. The Resident evil remakes are a perfect example of remakes being necessary to make a game accessible for new and old fans alike, exactly how a remake should be.
