On the first episode of Car Trek Series 7, AutoTempest challenges the guys to find the best imported cars they could get their hands on. Since they'd have to be at least 25 years old to qualify for importation, the guys would have to choose cars from the greatest decade - the '90s. Tyler brought a heavily modified BMW E30 325i hot rod from Lebanon, Freddy lets his JDM freak flag fly with an inappropriate Mazda RX-7, and Ed outdoes himself and shows up in the most offensive TVR Cerbera ever made. They are then told to meet at the Freedom Factory for a race. Hell yeah, brother.

Ed's not joking - that TVR was the absolutely the most famous cars in the early 2000 UK car culture. "Max Power" (popular UK tuner magazine) had it as one of their 'poster' cars, literally. Being a teenager at the time everyone had a poster of this car on their wall. Crazy that you guys actually got it!

I hope tyler breaks down first, or ed, because freddy always seems to get cheated out of winning. Last season, i thought ed got his car in kinda shady, and they always talk trash about freddy, thought tyler was gonna go crazy on freddy.
I think it's wrong that they are banning the japanese car's, and taking the title's from the owner's. You can't drive the japanese car's on the street's at all in many state's, and JR sold his right hand drive because he heard about this and didn't want a paper weight. They should ban then all if they are gonna target the japanese imports, should ban all right hand rive car's coming in.

A TVR Cerbera...in America...modified by West Coast customs... That might not only be one of the rarest cars ever sold, but one of the best cars ever featured on a show of this format (very much including Top Gear).

I'd like to point out that the front wheels on the RX-7 are rare. Rays built a set of wheels for Mazdaspeed, the MS-01, and that is indeed a pair of them.
Lots of hate for that RX-7, but its got a lot of really good parts under the patina and cleavage. Its about as JDM legit as it gets.

I've ridden in 2 TVR's, a TVR Griffith 500 & a TVR Chimera. When In perfect shape inside & out they are GORGEOUS. Fast, handle quite well & sound brilliant. Cool choice Ed!

I love how Ed didn't even try his usual financial gymnastics to justify his car. Usually there's an answer as to why he hasn't actually spent the amount he has actually spent, but even Ed can't talk his way out of that one. And yes, that TVR is almost certainly plotting how to murder it's current owner, because it's a TVR and they are the vehicular equivalent of an axe-murderer.
They didn't have a budget limitation this time, so it wasn't important how much they spent.
But it is different in the states, and pretty cool. I think it wins the challenge because of those two points.

Honestly just from Ed's statement at 8:45 he automatically wins this whole series regardless of the actual outcome. He's 100% right. Grey imports are for things like TVRs or other vehicles that could never make it over here due to grey market laws. Not a rhd FD or generic E30 with an engine swap.

@@ironymatt Here in Europe the E30s have only one VIN number and it is the one on the bulkhead. There simply ain't one on the dash or wherever. That's just the way they were sold here. We really like them and the 4.4 is a dream swap. You would be lucky if you can register an M52 engine in here, so most of these are still 4 cyl. stock 1.8 engines, and swapping an m42 is kind of the best you can do, besides throwing in a turbo.

Wow, Ed actually had an incredible challenge. From this episode I learned the US has a 25-year import ban on some cars that don't meet safety requirements. With that baseline I'd have loved to see the other two bring in cars that have never been stateside.
You can blame Mercedez for the ban, not safety regs.. There was a time when you could import a new MB cheaper than buying them at US dealerships and they lobbied congress

What i love about CarTrek is that it have the quality of a professional production but it's still showing people having fun.
So... in this episode we learn that of the three cars, a Crown Vic is better. :D That was one seriously fun race to watch, and hilarious to see how massive the Crown Vic was compared to the rest of them.
A crown Vic is only better in that it's cheaper, more comfortable, faster and more reliable. But that's it!

to be fair to the imports cleetus is a major drivers mod hes been doing laps for a long time so home court advantage and the vic is pretty solid and he never said he didnt use the NOS that hooked up to all the race vics

I’ve been watching your channel for a while but I just wanted to tell you that I work at a truck wash in jackson, ga and I saw both the bmw and the tvr on the trailer of a semi with the car trek license plates. They are absolutely spectacular in person and I felt as if it was such a pleasure to see these cars in person, I can send you pics of the tvr that I have.

I have always been fascinated with TVR since the first Gran Turismo. After growing up and learning of just how bad they actually are I would never own one but I love that Ed bought one.

I've been watching top gear for over 20 years and I was one of the first 20k subs on Chris Harris youtube channel, so its not like I'm talking without knowing. These guys have the perfect chemistry for a show like this, that's all there is to it.

It was not one of the best tuning cars in Europe or the uk. It was a famous MAX POWER car. Max power was all about looks and sound systems. Not performance. That car is gone stock behind the body kit and aesthetic mods.
@@RotMGIbanezRG It was also a bit of a lash up back then. Sadly I'm old enough to have seen it in the flesh when it was in the gold paint. None of those cars were actually that well done. Lots of fiberglass, filler and self tapping screws.
I'm old enough to remember when Max Power was actually about power and performance. Many of the cars featured in the early years were quite subtle. But yes in the late 90s the whole scene seemed to switch to aesthetics and car park pissing contests.
This is literally better than the new top gear. I Think this is a great alternative. As a Brit, I'm Compelled to back Ed. What a car.

They joke about engine weight on the e30 but the stock m20 was an iron block so the weight difference wouldn't be that much moving to an all-aluminum v8. If they had moved the battery to the rear that might have helped as well.
100%. The M60/M62 is underrated. The last generations of that engine with 4.4 and 4.6L displacement and Vanos were awesome. Torquey and rev happy.
An LS swap only adds about 150 pounds to a Miata I think I read one time because the 4 cylinder is pretty heavy.

@@theclicker I think the relevance is that small iron 4-bangers are often surprisingly heavy Vs aluminium V8s. I was surprised when XF Motorsports weighed an S2000 engine and it wasn't far off the weight of a Mercedes M113 V8.

The Carisma Cebera was so cool when I was growing up. Shame to see if in poor state these days. Was always the poster car for people that liked modified cars over here in the UK.
I still remember Clarkson wiping the floor with its oposition when new. That engine and clutch needed a rebuild !!

@@lc5176 the current ownership have started producing replacement parts for previous tvr models, even formed a separate company to take care of that side of the operation Finding parts shouldn't pose much of an issue but getting them sent over to the states might, what with delivery and customs etc.
Restoring that car fully would be a series I’d enjoy watching.

LoL Neighbor would have just lapped these guys...I'm pretty impressed what Cleetus did with just a more less stock crown vic, but I think that was more down to his driving/experience than the car itself.

Genuinely saddened me to see how bad the tvr looked after after 20years . Early 2000s this car hit covers of every modified car mag in the UK. Loved this car back in the day

Even being in the US I recognized that car. I miss those old max power builds. They weren't always my style but I really respect what they accomplished.
I remember that TVR from back in the day, I saw it for sale last year and asked the wife if I could get the Charisma TVR and got a firm NO! I had a Charisma built Peugeot 306gti when we met, that I'd taken for a laugh in part exchange. It had seen better days too 😂

Ironically, the guy who built it actually did all the cars on Pimp My Ride UK. Jamie Shaw is a legend in the UK car scene.
