All his life, people have told Rudy he's not good enough, not smart enough, not big enough. But nothing can stop his impossible dream of playing football for Notre Dame. From the time he's a young boy, Rudy (Sean Astin) is determined to join the Fighting Irish. But his blue collar family only laughs at his ambitions - they know Rudy will follow his father and brothers to the local steel mill. And, for four long years after high school, he does just that. But some dreams won't die, as Rudy proves when he goes to heroic, occasionally hilarious, lengths to win admission to Notre Dame. Once there, he becomes a walk-on player, serving as little more than a human tackling dummy against the starting players. Bloodied but unbeaten, Rudy wins the respect of legendary coach Ara Parseghian and the other Irish players, who give him one shot at gridiron glory. An incredible true story from the creators of Hoosiers, RUDY is an unforgettable testament to the power of dreams and the triumph of the common man.
Rudy is an inspiration to us all. He found One-Eyed Willie's treasure, helped destroy The One Ring, and made the Notre Dame football team with nothing but determination and hard work. What can't this man do?
fun fact, THE real life QB at notre dame at this time, was joe mantana he did not like rudy.

I saw this in the theater when it came out. I was 18 yrs old. I managed enough courage at the time when everyone started chanting "Rudy Rudy" to grab my date's hand and hold it throughout the movie. We're still married, nearly 30 yrs later. This movie holds a special place in my heart.
Bkraft!!! BKraft!!!! BKraft!!!! Bkraft!!!.........
This is the cutest thing I’ve ever read!!🥹
Rudy was offsides though
Good for you mate
That's so adorable it made me vomit
Awesome movie. What gets me every time? Charles Dutton’s applause. My man found a reason to have faith in humanity again.
Dudes a legend
I'm man enough to admit that every time I watch this scene and they raise him up in the air at the end I cry. This man worked sooooo hard for 4 years. Being put down and going through every obstacle to get there. Nobody believed in him. The build up from the entire film to this moment is what makes you cry. This man deserved this moment in Norte Dame history.
I just watched this with one of my sons and it was his first time watching. Towards the end I said I might finally make it through without crying....false. Couldn't do it.
The last 10 minutes are just out of this world in a good way
Me too, especially when debob says, he's so little.
His buddy and his mentor believed in him. 💪
According to joe Montana, just about everything In this movie was bullshit. Cute underdog story though.
Impossible not to cry at this scene. Whenever I feel down or unmotivated, this film raises my spirit and changes my mindset right after!!
I like when the assistant coach starts looking around and joins in on the Rudy chant.
For people that have played, on any level, practice/preparation is an emotional and physical grind. What happens on game day is just a release of all of it. The scene captures that well, for someone that waited so long for the payoff.
It's like the greatest feeling that means that they trust him as a teammate
My mom always laughed at that. The best part
And how him and the other assistant coach share a nice moment because they were there from the beginning of Rudy's football career there
Rudy's older brother finally being proud of him is everything
@Donna-Adelson_is_Satan yeah I don't care. The movie is great without all of that. Most sports movies are extremely exaggerated.
What a job of acting there; the facial expressions were totally accurate. Amazing
He was probably always proud. Just MORE bitter and jealous.

I'll never forget the "Rudy! Rudy! Rudy!" chant that went up in the theater when Samwise picked up Frodo and carried him up Mount Doom.
And now, I won't either! 😂
I've probably seen this clip 100+ times and cried EVERY time. Every second of it is perfect. Ned Beatty, John Dutton; everyone.

We were both crying and you know it.
And then moments later, his brother giving him acknowledgement while his father cheers his guts out. I just wish the clip didn't end abruptly right after it, because it needs that big music moment afterward
The best football film ever made. I love that he got his chance to play in the game. The support of his teammates made that moment surreal.
Couldn’t agree more! Rudy’s constant desire to achieve inspired his team. The ending always makes me tear up. Another great old school football movie, All The Right Moves. One of Tom Cruises first roles and filmed in Johnstown, PA.
Hate to burst your bubble, but the Hollywood version did not match the real story. I read an article about this many years ago. Joe Montana and other former teammates were critical of the movie, saying some of it was just not true, while some of it was just overdone. Movies are never accurate. They are an artist's vision of real life events that takes those events into the realm of myth. Sorry dudes! But I admit, I cried too, when I watched it many years ago.
Nah, greater surpasses all of them
Best sports movie period.
Remember the Titans
As a German geezer who doesn't know a bit about this sport cause we have only little support like you guys from abroad, I gotta say this is the most fabulous movie about Football at all and maybe ever will be. Rudy Ruettiger stands for all the chaps short of money standing there alone. Giving the one opportunity and grabbing it. He is the soldier to carry on. Which is special. Give it for Rudy. From Germany.
❤ I saw this in theaters when I was 13. I didn't even like football. But, it still makes me cry every time. 😢
Why do you talk like you’re British 😂
The thing I love about this is that his whole family was there and you know they would’ve been just as proud of him with the fact that he got to suit up. But Rudy goes out with a bang, gets carried off the field, and now is a cultural icon for everyone forever. My fav movie growing up.
And he would have been happy just suiting up.
This scene is emotionally uplifting in any case, but the context leading up to the scene is what makes it so glorious. It's hard to believe anybody hasn't seen this film, but if that is the case, you need to find it and watch it. You will not be disappointed.

I heard the coach wanted him in the game and it was his idea
My wife hasn’t since guess what we are doing now 😂
I hated Notre Dame for most of my life. When I saw this movie for the first time, I was an immediate Notre Dame fan.
Joe Montana was on the team when this happened. He said absolutely no one offered to give him there spot or turned in there jerseys. He said he was unanimous disliked on the team
I was at that game. Remember it like it was yesterday.
Still the best football movie of all time. I still watch it everyday in 2023 it never gets old and gets goosebumps everytime when they yell for Rudy.
Fun fact: the real Rudy Ruettiger was an extra in this scene. He's the fan in the fur collared coat and checkered cap, sitting behind Rudy's dad in the stands.
That's pretty cool. I never knew that.
As if this scene wasn't emotional enough. Garrsh
Yea he was the one Rudy’s dad grabbed after the sack
@@pepsiguy52883 no. Not him.
Fun fact: a lot of the scenes in the movie were made up by Hollywood and never happened including the scene where they all handed in their jerseys.
Man this scene is so powerful. I love how he proved all the doubters wrong and I’m glad his dad had a chance to see him play in person and watch his son make the last play. He NEVER gave up on his dream. Even when people said he was too small or he wasn’t your prototypical athlete he had heart, and toughness and he was beyond resilient. One of my all time favorite football movies.
And Fortune, his friend who was in charge of the field maintenance, 5:40 (Charles S Dutton) from helping Rudy and seeing him play in this game buried or let go of a lot of his personal grief from his playing days, I feel.

Whenever I need a i inspirational scene from a movie of my youth Rudy never missing.
Charles S Dutton was the best part of this movie. He made sure Rudy didn’t end up like he did and motivated him to be the best he could be
And his character keeps the whole story grounded. He constantly brings Rudy the dreamer back down to earth and prevents the movie from running off the rails into sappy sentimentalism. "You just got a full year of top-quality education. Don't be wasting my time" "Oh, you are so full of crap." "You five foot nothing. A hundred and nothing. And you hung with the best college football team in the land for two years!"
His clap was so aggressive lol. He’s proud

Yes what a noble cause. To put in all this effort so that you can say you dressed for a ND game. Purely selfish ego enhanchment reasons. Always felt that way even before the truth about this film and Rudy's later criminal history came up. Lets glorify a self serving individual rather than someone who gives effort fot someone else. He respresented so many just like himself, underdogs who stuck it out no matter what for a few seconds to prove himself.

I’m not much of a sports fan but this moment in this movie always makes me cry. His determination to play on the team when nobody believed in him! Go Rudy!
As incredible and inspiring as this scene is, it's the music by the late, great Jerry Goldsmith that makes it even more poignant! Every time I hear that theme, I get goosebumps! Fun fact: On the liner notes of the soundtrack CD, Rudy's family were in attendance when the score for this scene was completed, and when it was over, the entire symphony stood up and applauded Mr. Goldsmith, and to a person, everyone in Rudy's family were in tears! One of the greatest sports themes of all-time!
I'm a part of the TV crew that broadcasts home games to everyone in the country. As a lifelong ND fan, it's always a surreal feeling being in and around the stadium, especially stepping foot on the field. Especially today. The value of hard work, grit and a ''never give up'' attitude seems to be gone.
@@edb7300 it absolutely is. Kids live in comfort zones far too often. Most have no idea what real adversity is. Like the old saying goes: hard times make hard men, hard men make easy times, easy times make soft men, soft men make hard times. And so the story continues.

Love this movie, love his fighting sprit, love that they carried him off the field, never give up on your dreams!!!
Rudy never gave up, he did it.

He kind of did give up though. Fortune convinced him it was ok that he’d never realize his dream because he’d got to do a lot of really great stuff along the way.

In real life, it was the coach who actually suggested to let Rudy play that last game. We need more coaches like that; we need coaches to actually care about helping a struggling player achieve rather than only worrying about their own wins so that they can relive their own glory days. From my high school days, I saw way too many coaches who only cared about their own success and totally disregarded the feelings and dedication of those struggling players. What a shame.
Yup i was one of those players, sad and i still resent the coach 45 years later.
@@davidroyer8512 you are in good company. When I was in high school I went out for the basketball team all four years. And every year they cut me but let other, less dedicated players to play. The senior year was one that I shall remember for the rest of my life.. the coach always had 15 players on the squad. That year he limited to 12. Guess who was cut? I know, thirty years later I still I'm bothered by that person's decision. The irony is that school was a Jesuit High School. Therefore all these things about men for others are nothing but empty rhetoric. The coaches there got their Orgasmic High by cutting dedicated players. Years later that same coach had the gall to ask me to contribute financially their team. Guess what my answer was?
@@johnfu3850 sorry your coach was such an ass. Where i grew up it was all about your last name. My sophmore year going forward i had a 22 point scoring average. @@johnsizemore7579 I totally agree with you if we are talking about coaches at the professional level. But in high school and college, I think a coach's primary task is to help a young man grow, particularly in high schools such as mine where their motto is to create "men for others." yet the only lesson they taught me was "the strong survives the week dies off."
