In this video, Johnny (a park chess player) discovers that my mother, is a chess grandmaster. He gets very excited and they end up playing a game where he tries to play his absolute best. This video was recorded in Washington Square Park, in NYC.

    • He is the 19th regeneration of The Doctor, just taking a little break in New York City to work on his chess game across a few thousand years. The Tardis is probably just tucked a few blocks away. Obviously the proof is when you look up all the photos of him over the decades playing chess in the park he never changes age...and is almost always wearing the same outfit.

    • Johnny himself said that the social aspect was his favorite part of playing chess, and prolonging the game helped him to chat with her longer and get the 'fruit for the soul', as he said. She definitely made the right choice going a little bit easy, best move for all parties involved.

  • Johnny's infectious joy when he discovered he was playing against a GM and the pleasure to play against her was a genuine thrill for him. Also, Doc is a time traveler, he knew exactly when the match was won, when to resign, and then moved on because he'd already seen the finish.

  • I feel like the competitive gaming community has a lot to learn from this guy. Doesnt matter whether its tabletop, wargame video games etc. He just enjoys the game, and the game itself is in the reward. Too many people just care only about the win to the point that nothing else matters and the fun gets lost. Win, lose or draw you know this guy has the time of his life.

  • We were no grandmasters, but I remember a guy I used to play with in college. We weren't friends outside of the game, but we played nearly every day over breakfast before class. He was far better than I was and enjoyed teaching me and watching me learn and grow as a player. I'll never forget the first - and only - time I managed to beat him. He was so pleased. I never saw him again after that semester, but I'll never forget him. Great times.
