These boys don’t need prison, they need a role model.
The internet says otherwise
Are you going to volunteer?
@@nom_de_guerre_ are you?
So much more than a role model. Most children who act out have a chemical imbalance. They can be stabilized with meds or natural methods...then comes the positive role, with activities to keep them busy.
Children with autism and Aspergers don't need role models, they need a lot of behaviorial therapy. A lot of resources are needed to help these children but lower income parents cannot afford that so they are stuck with the options they have. It's absolutely heartbreaking seeing your child struggle to cope with his/her environment. All the more reasons why healthcare should be the top priority of this country
The first kid was a whole different person when his mom wasn’t around
Cause he doesn't respect his junkie mom.
Mom look like a crackhead
Paul Smith I think they mean he felt more comfortable being vulnerable and didn’t keep a hard exterior, his mom is sus
It seems like he wants a person to be involved in his life, and communicate with him. I’m pretty sure whenever his mother “talks” with him it’s always yelling, and she’s getting on his case. That’s why he escapes home, and goes to the river.
His mum is hot.
A lot of Vice reporters are insufferable but this guy is brilliant
Javert Absolutely! He was able to get the kids to open up in front of cameras. Well Done Mate!
seems like he has more empathy
@Hammer_of_creation that's us Londoners for u !!!! Best people in the world
Javert He has many films & videos. He has one where he went to a KKK rally and talked with members. See if he’s on KZhead or Google him.
Javert I beg to differ but you’re right about this guy he really cares and listens
First boy needs a dad... he even looked up to the guy even tho he didnt know em
Ideally we could get him into the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program, so he could have that interaction he so needs
@Kay Madrid her son’s father literally died, she didn’t have a choice in the matter...

Bro, the host was just so chill and understanding of them, he didn’t shout at them for what they did, he just listened to them and made them really understand their mistakes ygm? That’s the kind of guy they need.
I agree! I was thinking that the reporter would be a great mentor for these kids.
Man... I definitely felt the same thing you just said 👏 👏 👏. The blame game is a never-ending one, but praise. We need to give it more where it's due.
jamali is fantastic, great comedian
Shorn and Mamito😂
why would he yell at them?
thats the most awkward thing ever "you speak to your dad ?" "oh he dead"
James Taylor i was like oop💀
@Dexter Ohlsson oof
Hmmmm nah it wasn’t awkward
Took me a second before it hit me like a drunk guy arguing with his wife.
Its not awkard. Your dad is just not dead. But when he dies.... Wtf youre gonna say hes still alive???
I'm a high functioning guy with aspergers and I really hope that last kid gets the help he needs. He's a sweet kid he just has mental barriers others can't see. He just needs help finding his peace. I used to lash out a lot from not being able to communicate effectively and I would get frustrated. Hoping for the best bud
Jesse Smith you seem to communicate very well, is typing easier? Forgive my ignorance
Yeah my thoughts exactly.
It's even more worrisome because he's a young black man...or becoming a man
FOxXyYgRaMpA ya it only happens in social situations and not knowing how to socialize with people it not like can’t communicate at all
Assburgers
"He just doesn't call." Ouch. Just hearing that hurts. It's hard to accept that there are parents out there who dont care about their kids lives.
You tend to adjust and become numb to certain things Alyssa. You become used to your dad not being around or contacting you; I have learned this from first hand experience. My dad isn’t involved in my daily life, rarely calls, and is someone who is just there to pay child support & alimony. Don’t get me wrong, yeah it sucks. But instead of drowning in sorrow you gotta push through, it’s the only way to survive and see tomorrow. On the bright side, it has taught me how to raise my kids if I decide on having any though!
Trans bloop"> how is the government going to make men be better fathers? im not sure what point you're trying to make because you're kinda all over the place. victim blaming is a different thing then telling a person to take responsibility for their actions.
I can’t even imagine not being around my kids. It’s hard not thinking about and getting depressed over them getting older. All I want out of life, is to provide for, and be around my babies.
Alyssa saldana I have a friend that has the same name as u
Trans bloop"> Did you just relate a man not wearing a condom, getting a woman pregnant and not being a father and staying... To rape victims choice of clothing?
That second kid has potential. Just by the way he speaks you can tell he knows there’s potential. He needs the right adult to look up to.
Ritt Pong they all have potential
The 2nd kid doesnt even look bad
Ritt Pong exactly what I’m thinking . He clearly just doesn’t have the proper guidance or support he needs
Ritt Pong for sure. Seems like an ok kid. Hopefully he gets into sports, football can certainly save lives more than people understand
In his defense, His father is deceased. Yeah the other kids may have fathers who dont see them often, but at least they have them to lose. Theres totally more to the story than we see here in this short video
I love how the host treats everyone with so much respect. Especially the kids. He treats the kids with so much kindness and respect you can see an immediate change in their attitude within the video. The parents should try and learn a thing or two.
Hes honestly so great and hilarious
You wouldn't have loved them on feminism 101 he's the one that's insufferable
Jamali Maddix is definitely a great guy and a host. He should be both a role model and a father figure to these boys he met.
The second kid is a victim of the justice system, and the last one is smart, and could probably be a genius if he got into the right stuff such as coding etc... , definitely sad if you ask me
Agreed. I'd say the second kid should be given a chance. If I was a judge I'd give him a chance and dismiss the charges unless there is proof he was involved but tellem if he comes before me again I won't be so light
@anonymous two felonies on anyone takes their life away. Doesn't matter the age or race. Drastically limits their job availablity to basically just construction or labor and more

What makes you laugh? irony. I hope that boy gets the help he needs because he's got a future in comedy writing.

Matt Lawson *Absolutely correct, any experience in our horrific prison system will curb and ruin the boundless possibilities his mind has. We as a civilization will miss what he has to give us bcuz he will be taught it's wrong to say or think that way, I have just witnessed a future tragedy*
I guess in his own words, its tragic irony. It makes me want to laugh, but also makes me want to cry
Matt Lawson he deadass should read satirical books “animal farm” i would love to see how he grasps it
Yep. I feel as bad for him as I do his mom/aunt. There should be more help available for parents of special needs kids. I don't blame them for not knowing how to handle him, but this is going to end in the worst possible way.
I have a 6 year old son with the same condition. Regimine and routine are the foundations of his world. After that comes love, support, time and understanding. Ain't a DAMN thing in life that's good comes easy.

He got a dirtbike, let that kid do motocross i think hobby/sports will keep him away from negatives 🤷🏾♂️
crazy bulldog Somebody needs to turn that kid on to skateboarding, asap.
@hangtime 7190 not really
Zion Auel I can confirm in South Carolina motor sports is indeed a bit expensive to be in for a single mother and her kid
The saddest part is when they graduate & some mom's did not show up and came late. The disappointment on their faces. Even the program employees said it was a shame.
Nicole Deejay aka XxSuckerpunchxX All these people live at poverty level, when you work for poverty wages you don't get days and you live paycheck to paycheck so even if the parents wanted to take off work or were given the days off they cant afford it. Losing rental, utilities, food , and bill money means your kid and you could come back to a locked door and belongs on the stoop. Not to mention additional travel expenses to get there, have shelter, and meals. A lot goes into a simple trip across state for the poor. All around sad and detrimental to the spirit of the parents and the children but that's American Life.
Elite Soulfly You’d be really surprised how little backgrounds are looked into. I’ve PTSD so when I was younger I’d have flashbacks that made me flip shit hit people cause I thought I was being attacked. My parents put me in a treatment program but said I was just a autistic kid with a poor attitude and no respect for the rules. I got there and the first thing out of the head therapists mouth was “we were made to believe you needed way more help then you actually do”. They just blindly trust the parents which is messed up. While I was there this rich mom from Cali put her son there because he missed curfew once, he was there for a week before his mom pulled him out. She said “he’s learned his lesson now”. It’s fucked up how something meant to help kids is used to punish them
Harajuku3000 THAT IS REAL.

You see how these boys respond to normal conversation. That’s what they need someone to talk to....a male figure. Common theme single mom.
Right. Mom is usually too busy keeping everything together so there is no one to talk to. So sad
@@shay8942 or screaming like murder with the kids looking like O.o
@@ObivousNinja honestly that is the situation sometimes, I dealt with that. Fucking sucks!
Common theme is a selfish shitty parent that doesn’t show them enough love and get them the help they actually need. I raise my kids the majority of the time by myself bc my husband is in the military and my son with special needs is a very loving caring kid bc me his mother is loving and caring to him. That’s the common theme here, not everyone was meant to be a parent. From observation even from kids without intellectual disadvantages it comes down to whether the mother is nurturing or not.
Single moms are probably protecting the kids from abusive men, so...BLAME THE MEN.
Common theme: no dad.
Well you shouldn’t have taken the first dad up to heaven then, Jesus.
And poverty.
@@racheltucker8054 Mainly lack of a Dad

He had a dirtbike in the background.
He has his mom...
I feel bad for the last kid. He's really smart and has developmental issues that are the roots of his behavioral problems. More than likely that "prison" program is going to do a lot more harm than good and possibly make him worse. Sad his mom/aunt don't realize that or have the resources to get him the help he actually needs. Only in the south would a "therapist" recommend a prison program for kids with Autism and Aspergers smh, that just means they're not trained well enough to treat him themself.
atmosvere so true
atmosvere I have ASD (aspergers), and this kid sounds a lot like I was a kid. Juvie didn't help me, and it won't help that kid. It just made me terrified, and I started acting out on myself. Moved out at 15, started using injection drugs, became a bad alcoholic, lived on the streets all over the country for years. Used my background in martial arts to make money underground fighting, and when an injury from a car accident put an end to that, started stealing, and doing all kinds of other crazy things. Eventually, I figured my stuff out, and now I'm in my mid 20's, and doing better. But I know that some understanding and compassion of the way my brain works, instead of just treating me like I was a criminal and a bad kid, would have saved me a lot of trouble. My Fiance for example, is also Autistic, but had a great, understanding family, proper therapy, and didn't have his behavior criminalized even by his parents. His teens were completely different because of it. In a few years, when we have a child, that kid will likely also have ASD, and I just hope that I can give them a better environment than the one I grew up in, where even something like not making eye contact, or stimming, made me a "bad" kid. I hope the kid in this video gets the proper help he needs too.
It’s showing him what can happen he still needs to understand the consequences your of course gonna have to have more conversation with him for it to sink in in the intended way

First kid just needed a dad figure. Jhamli did it in one trip to the river
Dude is definitely scared of his mom too. Look how much he opens up after she leaves
@@michaelhuerter1921 I thought the same thing she hits him.wtf so sad beating a person is torture and not discipline and will leave ptsd
This guy is so great at talking to these kids and making them comfortable enough to open up about their issues.
The worst thing is when you say something like, "Where's your mom/dad" and they just say that they are dead. It's really awkward and sad...
Tony K yeah I've been in that situation like I asked "so why is your dad never at home? Did your parents break up?" They were like "emmm...he died." And i was so awkward.
Tony K as someone who doesn’t have their dad with them (not dead) it doesn’t make a big difference if he was never apart of your life.
From your perspective, it may not any difference. Ffor the person that said it, it's pretty bad because they think that they did something wrong.
Of course, that's how most people would feel. That's why I'm telling you that sometimes it really doesn't affect people as much as you think it does. Now that I think of it though, I do wish I had a father figure for support when it came to money.
Of course it is sad but at least death was not a choice where as the absent parents are choosing to not visit their children & are actively avoiding seeing them, missing an opportunity many would love to have.
That bullshit scared straight program isn't going to help the special needs kid. He's smart and well spoken. His mother needs to find a better therapist. One that teaches both child and parent how to communicate more effectively. Especially when he's angry. Not one who recommends jail.
MrDinero Eentertainment. You're right, but that's what these "bad" therapists do. Recommend prison. and watching this is so sad because the kids are NOT getting the help really needed.
MrDinero Eentertainment well in the real world when he grows up he's going to jail
100% agree
La Flame he isn’t destined to go to prison because he has problems now. This is part of the problem. Don’t assume on people dude you don’t know that kid at all. He doesn’t understand why what he did was wrong yet little dude just has a rough time he needs some understanding and love not getting scared out of his mind in a place he doesn’t know. He needs routine and communication and that kid will be perfectly fine in life. People need to be understanding of his needs and patient with him when he isn’t understanding what’s going on in his head. He needs a mother who can handle him, and it’s not his mom’s fault she can’t, most parent can’t handle their children at all, but she is doing the best she can for her baby and you should respect that woman for that and not ‘he’s going to prison as an adult anyway’ her child. Give people a chance before you shit all over their whole life dude. I hope someone stands up for you like this someday so you understand how it feels to be put into a predetermined box by a complete stranger. We need to love each other if we ever want to fix any of the problems in this world dude so even though you were a jerk I love you dude and hope you have a really good day.

Sure it is harder with less money but it's no excuse my mum took us for walks, we played in the river, had picnics, went to play parks, free museums, my dad used to play ball games with me, fly a kite, build dens, make a tyre swing etc. I am grateful my parents put the time & effort in, it seems much more rare nowadays.

@@malia4343 with a Father, it is easy to contend. Father is good! Miss
@@malia4343 Dads teach their kid proper morals and ethics in the social world, mothers help care and raise their children educationally. Fathers have an important role, especially for young boys, they need a male figure that they can just look up to. It is so cute how my baby cousin will start walking with his chest up and all quite with his dad. He stop crying and everything and acts tough, it shows the effects that a dad can have even in the slightest of things.
I have Asperger’s and in kindergarten until the middle of grade 3, I had fairly serious aggression issues. I NEVER *intentionally* caused harm. It’s not like I got a kick out of hurting my classmates. Without proper cognitive empathy, I couldn’t feel their pain so it’s not like I could enjoy it. It wasn’t sadistic, it was me not understanding how and why my behaviours were bad and harmful. I just had a lot of rage and pain in me because of sensory overloads, often caused by my classmates. So I’d act out as a way of I guess trying to communicate that I was NOT okay. I did realize eventually in the second half of grade 3 how bad my behaviours were and I never hurt anyone ever again. The boys said the first time he robbed his classmate, his classmate was laughing and didn’t seem upset. His Asperger’s interferes with his ability to see and understand that not all laughter is a sign of enjoyment. It also gets in the way of him understanding that just because something is funny once, doesn’t mean that person will find it funny again. As for the second boy, he could very well have ODD - Oppositional Defiance Disorder. Sending kids and teens with autism to a correctional facility is ridiculous. You CANNOT scare the autism out of someone. You CANNOT cure autism. They need behavioural therapy.

Dawn Orio sadly you can only do so much I was like that as a teen and went to prison but I changed and am I good person now. But it’s up to him gotta want it , hobbies are good to I got into motorcycles keep ya off the streets
Brenda Parrish done that too nothing works
Get a counselor your kid just needs help and someone to talk too it will be hard to get help but it will be worth it and prison usually makes things worse and so does hitting
@@dawnorio8501 how you do it most times it works
The first kid is legit Huck Finn
these kids need more creative outlets, even if you like breaking shit. i remember once when i was doing community service as a teen (constantly getting arrested / in trouble) i was working at a recycling center and an older guy came up to me and said, "you look bored, i need you to break ALL these glass bottles...", i spent the rest of the day throwing bottles at a brick wall into a big pile of broken glass. it's one of my favorite memories. sure it didn't cure me, but young boys need a way to get out their aggression in a responsible manner
Vasectomy Fail Smashing bottles at a recycling centre isn’t responsible...
FmS you missed the point dimwit
I grew up in North Carolina. Not shit to do in either state for kids other than get into trouble.
A Ward Not to be rude, but that's what people say everywhere. The key is to make something interesting rather than just letting life happen to you.
Let them learn social skills alongside occupation skills!
“It’s funny but also tragic, it makes me want to laugh but also makes me want to cry My life
My dad was never around either. This makes me glad I’m in my sons life and providing for him. Hopefully these kids can find some role models. Stay up little homies.
“There was a situation at school” well that’s one way of looking at.
Those kids seem uncomfortable and insecure around authority. I would bet everything they just need a strong figure in their life to set them on the right path not peers that kowtow to them.
Jon whatbexactlymis a kowtow? 🤔
Jon No What those kids really need is a good old fashioned Ass whooping! James Evans style!
Jon MacDonald Yeah because every person that had their ass whooped didn't end up in the streets or in prison/jail. There are more way to discipline your child effectively than just inflicting pain on them
@@jonmacdonald5345 nothing wrong with that
I'm a widowed mom with two young boys, I really hope that they don't have a problem with defiance and authority. It has been just me for a while, and the only role model they have is me. I hope this boy gets better.
@Joshua Struyk I don't want to be replaced, I don't want anyone to replace me. I will not be submissive to anyone, and nobody will be submissive to me. I will walk besides my partner, not in front or behind of them.
@Joshua Struyk that’s weird
I like this. Bring a cool dude that these kids feel comfortable talking to to help them out . Good shit
I feel really bad for the 3rd kid.
Alex C ya
Seriously he does not deserve to be there. He just needs some help.
Feel bad for all of them who cares about only one they all need help SMH
@@JM-kp1bo there is kind of a difference between him and those kids
The last boy doesn't need discipline, he needs a psychology therapist.
Chantell Sherman he still needs to see where not working on his angry outbursts could get him cuz a lot of people in prison just needed a therapist Kids with autism still need discipline they just need more conversation to go with it
Most people with autism are sensitive to sound and their environment. They are often violent because they haven't learned how to communicate properly. Putting a kid in a stressful environment like jail will just make him worse. The mother said herself that there are no other programs so she put him in this one. I know she is desperate but someone gave her bad advice.
i love these videos about kids struggling or in prison coz i love getting to hear their stories and i wish i would be there just hearing more of it! it's like in this movie called We Die Young! it's really obvious how broken we are as humans!
Last boy reminds me of my son. Suffers the same conditions and his mind is just as beautiful.
My granddaughter has aspergers and she used to run off and hide. That's part of the illness quite often. He doesn't need this kind of program he needs one for his issues
Aspergers is not an Illness.
uh yes it is its a mental illness
please go back to school
Can both of you guys stop arguing over something that doesn't really matter when it comes down to terrible issues going on around the world. I just went to the dictionary and it's a syndrome. All I did was make a comment about my granddaughter I'm sorry that I didn't use the words perfectly to make you happy I'm sorry I caused you to go into a tantrum. Life is too short sometimes you need to choose your battles wisely and not argue over stupid things that cause you to call people names
This is the first time we have ever had anyone in my family with autism and I am still learning about this. At the end of the day I am just so happy that she is so high functioning but she is still very immature for her age and has so many little issues that are a part of the syndrome
One thing they all have in common. No father figure in their lives. Can we please become the generation of men that raise their children. Anyone can become a dad, but can we all be fathers?!
Seth Belcher but literally the dad died can’t help that
Derpy Derp naw. It's the dad's fault that he died. Should've stayed alive to take care of his kid. /s
Nate Daniel no one can help a freak accident kid
Derpy Derp not sure if you are calling the kid a freak accident or saying that I'm a kid and that his father's death was a dream accident.
Seth Belcher i know same sex couple who raise their children just fine. Its not about being a father its about being a good parent. No matter what you do you caused that child to exist. So you have two choices leave or stay there is no half in half out. Cant control death either.
Good job boss man you make me happy to know there's someone like you out there
These kids need a father in their lives
The kid who likes cheeseburgers is smart. He said a race car with flames that has caught on fire. The irony
TheIncredibleKevin these children are dyslexic or have aspbergers...Theyre parents should get them evaluated before its too late. That jail shit will not help at all
*coincidence
Dyslexia is something entirely different
autistic kids are usually brilliant
tarvin sanders I’m guessing you don’t know what dyslexia is
*Robs Someone Tells cops.. “We was just playin around..” 🤣
Nacira it was just kids being kids lol
Lmfao
Two felony’s and misdemeanor for not stepping in when a kid was getting jumped. How bad was the kid. Omg. That bathroom jumping smh
i love this guy. he just talked to these boys man.
I don't know how many actual vice employees see the comments but I just have to say this is easily the best show vice produces by a long shot. This is excellent work.
You should check out more of Jamali's work with VICE. It's top notch.
That last kid could be a youtuber or a standup comic if he put his energy and heart in the right place. hes def smart
You asked a very important question that I myself was curious to know the answer to. Just how instilled into their lives was the presence of a father figure/positive male role model. Unfortunately we learned the sad yet common truth amongst young male teens in crisis. I honestly bet the small amount of time Jamali spent with them during filming will always be remembered down the road by each child. I really wish the family of the autistic boy had a better outreach of education, support, and means to go about trying to cope with his condition in ways that didn’t require yet another person suffering from a mental health issue being misplaced into a correctional facility. From my own firsthand experience in a county jail I can say with factual grief the mistreatment received by those who should have been in a medical facility receiving treatment and care for a mental health issue. Instead were locked up with very ill minded, unkind, ignorant criminals giving them unrelenting hell for being different with the correctional officers treating them the same if not worse
Last kid is so brilliant its amazing.
"Do you talk to your Dad a lot?" "My dad?" "Yeah." "He died."
The 2nd boy tho. Peer pressure ? Damn sad .... felonies on his name already
It's best if he moves to another country because you can't get into anything with a felony, trust me. Can't get housing, financing, college admission, or even a job over minimum wage.
James Bra Oh yeah, just move to another country. So feasible.
James Bra lol yea just move to another country ez
James Bra you can it’s just difficult also the charges haven’t been confined yet
That shit will be expunged when he turns 18
That kid at the beggining reminds me so much of a younger me. I hope he gets on the right path.
Yes!! He had one of my favorite shows ever on Netflix. The other side or how your neighbors live or something. It was amazing and insightful and J is amazing
His beard is probably the best part of the video
- Jacek Hacks - Gameplays, tutorials and more! His beard is majestic AF
Looks like keemstar’s beard
- Jacek Hacks - Gameplays, tutorials and more! Yeah man shits on point.
Yeah I know it looks like Osama Bin Laden's beard
It is lol
These kids just need guidance. I never expected the last kid to say irony. He's smart, just needs someone he can connect with to guide him.
thank goodness for subtitles
Aw.. my heart :( I live in SC and a lot of kids in the rural parts are usually the ones that are in and out of the prison system the most. No money and bad circumstances isn't a good combo
C'mon post the full episode since i dont have viceland
The problem is not teaching kids to deal with there emotions and real tough life events, need to teach them about accountability and keep them busy and happy with positive activities like sports, art and etc. If it’s a psychological issue than you gotta get them counseling and talk positively about it don’t say they’re crazy.
Pamela Campani it’s not that easy especially in South Carolina I use to stay there and I came from a single parent home and went through a jail tour the problem is resources for the kids there’s not a lot to do there for younger kids especially ones where they’re parents work 24/7 not a lot of clubs so kids are left doing bad things nobody teaches them to be yourself be a leader because school doesn’t offer that they can barely even think for themselves without getting in trouble I could go on and on
Brandon Toad Wow! What great, insightful comment. You should screenshot it, print it out, and frame it because you should be proud of how clever you are.
well thats sounds nice but not easy to practice when you are a single parent and poor
Yep your right but when the Government gets involved they get labeled with something to be drugged for and charged with a felony.
Nikolas still got counseling and still shot up a school mate
This is a great interviewer. More interviews like this. Talking to kids. To the future.
I wish Vice had a Jamali section..where i could watch only the vids he presents.
This last kid broke my heart he is so smart when he broke down what happened with him and his mom and why he did what he did that poor boy just wants someone that he can look up to like a mentor I really hope they do a update for this episode
