What’s the Red Dragon movie about?
In 1980, FBI agent Will Graham (Edward Norton from Primal Fear, American History X and Fight Club) visited forensic Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins from The Lion in Winter, The Silence of the Lambs and The Elephant Man) to discuss a case. Graham realizes that the killer is a cannibal, but Lecter stabs him. Lecter is imprisoned and Graham retires to Florida with his family. Years later, another serial killer, the Tooth Fairy, kills two families. Graham is asked for help by agent Crawford (Harvey Keitel from Bugsy and The Piano) and Graham concludes that he must consult with Lecter. The killer is Francis Dolarhyde (Ralph Fiennes from Schindler’s List, the Harry Potter saga and The Grand Budapest Hotel), and acts on the order of his alternate personality, whom he calls the Great Red Dragon. A letter from the Tooth Fairy is discovered hidden in Lecter's cell, expressing his admiration for Lecter and his interest in Graham. Dolarhyde has a relationship with Reba (Emily Watson from Breaking the Waves and Oranges and Sunshine) but her alternative personality requires him to kill her. Desperate to end the Dragon's control over him, Dolarhyde goes to the Brooklyn Museum, tears up Blake's painting and eats it. Later, Dolarhyde goes to Reba's house and learns that she has spent the evening with a colleague. Enraged, Dolarhyde kills him, kidnaps Reba, takes her to his house and sets it on fire. Unable to kill her, Reba escapes when the police arrive. Dolarhyde infiltrates Graham's house, takes his son hostage and threatens to kill him. To save his son, Graham reminds Dolarhyde of what he knows about his childhood. Enraged, the Dolarhyde attacks Graham. Both are seriously injured in a shoot-out, which ends when Graham's wife kills Dolarhyde.

    • "The difference between insanity and genius is measured only by success." Lecter was annoyed that he was one death and cannibal meal away from success - Will's. Will sees Lecter as the man who took away his frail humanity and consumed it. Lecter sees Will as the man who took away his genius success and shot it dead. This courtship between the two was them admitting to each other their injuries and offering closure. Lecter becomes the genius he wants to be with the capture of the Red Dragon. And Will heals his wounds with the capture of the Red Dragon.

    • Lector also took offense that Will called himself a layman. As though he didn't give himself credit for capturing the infamous Hannibal the Cannibal. Because by extension, that means that a layman could've also caught Lector. As in Lector is unremarkable, contrary to his own beliefs. To himself, he is a highly intelligent and fine artist, creating magnificent dishes of those whom he perceives to be inferior. Not a manipulative psychotic quack serial killer.

    • When Hannibal says “you say you’re a layman…..” Almost seems like Lecter was insulted by that. Like he thinks Will doesn’t give himself enough credit. But also how Lecter gets directly against the glass when comparing who’s smarter and how Will caught him. So yeah you’re right.

  • Calling Lecter "insane" was a mistake, after that he started to threaten Will, just look at Lecter's facial expressions, how greatly Anthony Hopkins played resentful Lecter.

    @Adikoooo@Adikoooo2 жыл бұрын
    • There are two sides to this i think: First: it was definetely a mistake, because it risks the life of his family But: if you only look at it from Lecters perspective and his mindgames, then Will is beating him again and again. Lecter thinks very highly of himself and that he was "defeated" by Will is already hard to swallow. Now, Will doesn't engage in his mindgames and even if he agrees that Lecter is smarter than him he belittles his existence and calls him insane. Again, for someone like Lecter that is hard to swallow. I guess Lecter even hated the fact that his only response to that statement was to threaten Will and his family. For such a highly intelligent person that should feel wrong, since he indiractely agrees that Will is superior here. That Lecter goes out of his way and really tries to kill Will and his family through Dollarhyde is the final nail in the coffin. Will beat him too many times and he tries revenge in the simplest way. It could have cost him his life and his family (luckily it didn't) but purely looking at the mindgames between the two Will is the clear winner here

  • One of the best parts is the moment between 1:29 and 2:03. Graham tells him the truth about his nature: because he is insane, despite Lecter is smarter, he caught him, and Lecter was left out of words, and there is no way of talking and using rethoric out of this one. Evils destroys itself.

    @mirko7587@mirko75872 жыл бұрын
    • Interesting. I actually interpreted Lector's reaction as disappointment...Will tells him that he had "disadvantages"; and Lector is eager to hear what sort of insight Will had into his character. We need to remember that, Hannibal Lector & Will Graham have an understanding of each other...Will has a mental condition that allows him to quite literally think & feel exactly how another person thinks; and Hannibal Lector is no mere madman; but a highly intelligent, sophisticated predator who simply operates beyond morals or ethics. When Will says that he managed to catch Lector just because he is "insane", I think Hannibal viewed it at a lazy, uninspired answer...something that any normal person would say. Will is not a "normal" person...he is someone that Lector views as gifted, possessing of a unique mind. At the same time, Lector also believes Will is holding himself back...rejecting his ability to empathize with killers & psychopaths because Will fears becoming like them. Becoming like Hannibal Lector, even. And so Lector perceives WIll as a broken thing; someone unwilling to embrace their own potential because they're too cowardly to try. Later on in the movie, Lector explains to WIll that the reason why he managed to catch him was because the two of them "are very much alike". Here, Will wasn't willing to admit that. And so Lector's reaction is a combination of a few things: A mix of sadness & disappointment, because Will apparently hasn't "evolved" at all since Lector's years of incarceration...which Lector considers a waste... ...and bitterness, of course, since Lector must come to terms with the fact that he got caught by a novice who had not "yet" risen to his level. In Lector's mind, he sees Will as a wolf who is choosing to live among the lambs...and it annoys him. THAT'S who caught him? No, no no no. So Lector agrees to help Will...because he wants to force Will to embrace the parts of him that scares him. He wants Will to be his peer. Anything less is an insult to Lector.

  • I wish there were more interactions and scenes with Ed Norton and Anthony Hopkins as these characters both before the opening scene in the movie and at different points, from the courtroom and on to various points of the Red Dragon case. In a new movie. Maybe even a scene with Ed’s character and Jodi Foster’s character (played by Jodi Foster). Maybe a movie that covers these moments in the past (with de-aging technology) and coming to the present with Ed Norton and Jodi Foster intellectually chasing Lecter and winning, either with Norton’s character or Foster’s character dying in the end and Lecter getting captured. Sort of a game of chess with Lecter getting outmaneuvered and one of the two protagonist pieces being sacrificed for the win. Again: specifically played by Ed Norton, Anthony Hopkins and Jodi Foster.
