What’s the Red Dragon movie about?
In 1980, FBI agent Will Graham (Edward Norton from Primal Fear, American History X and Fight Club) visited forensic Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins from The Lion in Winter, The Silence of the Lambs and The Elephant Man) to discuss a case. Graham realizes that the killer is a cannibal, but Lecter stabs him. Lecter is imprisoned and Graham retires to Florida with his family. Years later, another serial killer, the Tooth Fairy, kills two families. Graham is asked for help by agent Crawford (Harvey Keitel from Bugsy and The Piano) and Graham concludes that he must consult with Lecter. The killer is Francis Dolarhyde (Ralph Fiennes from Schindler’s List, the Harry Potter saga and The Grand Budapest Hotel), and acts on the order of his alternate personality, whom he calls the Great Red Dragon. A letter from the Tooth Fairy is discovered hidden in Lecter's cell, expressing his admiration for Lecter and his interest in Graham. Dolarhyde has a relationship with Reba (Emily Watson from Breaking the Waves and Oranges and Sunshine) but her alternative personality requires him to kill her. Desperate to end the Dragon's control over him, Dolarhyde goes to the Brooklyn Museum, tears up Blake's painting and eats it. Later, Dolarhyde goes to Reba's house and learns that she has spent the evening with a colleague. Enraged, Dolarhyde kills him, kidnaps Reba, takes her to his house and sets it on fire. Unable to kill her, Reba escapes when the police arrive. Dolarhyde infiltrates Graham's house, takes his son hostage and threatens to kill him. To save his son, Graham reminds Dolarhyde of what he knows about his childhood. Enraged, the Dolarhyde attacks Graham. Both are seriously injured in a shoot-out, which ends when Graham's wife kills Dolarhyde.

  • I like to think Dr. Lecter left that book in obvious plain view for Graham to find-and even left the bookmark on the 'sweetbread' part wanting Graham to solve who the killer was while being actually killed by him. Oh Hannibal you and your poetic justice. He rather liked Graham and even sort of tries soothing him while he bleeds out.

  • When Will speaks of Dr. Lecter's "disadvantage" the insanity of being caught, wanting someone he felt was a kindred to know what he did, what he was doing was all too alluring to not leave a clue; even if it meant he would kill Will; after the realization that Hannibal was in fact the killer they as a team were trying to capture. That was the insanity and the disadvantage; that strange duality.

    @jadengarrett506@jadengarrett5062 жыл бұрын
    • "The distance between insanity and genius is measured only by success." Will ALMOST caught Lecter. He didn't even suspect Lecter until he pieced it together from the book Lecter left behind. Lecter ALMOST got away with it. Him leading Will on a wild goose chase certainly implicated him. Will finding that book and getting stabbed confirmed it.

      @starhalv2427@starhalv242710 ай бұрын
    • What he meant by that was Hannibal was too insane to see how he gave himself away. It wasn't just the book that did it, it was the fact that Hannibal seemingly never suggested the killer was cannibalizing people, which meant that he was also leading Will on and astray at earlier points for a reason. He also didn't really question or seem all too surprised at the realization of the killer eating people, even though it was actually quite a revelation. Hannibal behaved the way he did because he was completely confident that he was going to be able to take Will down, even though Will may have never made a connection to Hannibal had he simply left, Hannibal couldn't take that risk, and he let his insane side take over. He also made it a point to get Will's coat for him...which was a ploy to get a weapon. He didn't need to get Will's coat, such a thing would be superfluous and senseless, because Will could have just as easily got his own coat on his way out. So it was disguised as a polite gesture, because he knew Will said he was tired, he figured he could make such an excuse without raising alarm. An odd action, but not so odd that a person would immediately suspect a nefarious motive. It was a psychological manipulation. He also meant that Hannibal could have just killed him instead of trying to make it a thing. But Hannibal wanted to preserve him and carve him up for food, instead of just kill him, so he didn't go straight for the kill. Hannibal kills with technical skill maybe, but doesn't really kill efficiently, because he doesn't want to discard his kills, and he has a mindset going into it, so he only kills in specific ways, that are almost ritualistic in a way. He stabbed Will, but he didn't want him to feel much pain because he had respect for Will's ability to think like and understand him. Hannibal could have just stabbed him in the side and then quickly slit his throat. But his insanity wouldn't allow him to kill in that way, because his kills had to be very personal, 1 on 1, and ritualistic. That allowed Will to get the upper hand. Hannibal had grown soo used to killing, that it became soo easy, he never really even expected any surprises or a fight he couldn't handle. Will surprised him by being able to stab Hannibal back with his own arrows, in pretty much the same place Will was stabbed. The irony of this was not lost on Hannibal. So for all of Hannibal's intelligence, he was still too insane to just get rid of an imminent threat quickly without involving all the extra ritualism. For Hannibal, in a way, hunting down someone who was hunting him, was like the rush of a high, an ultimate trophy, which is why he said he'd eat Will's heart. Hannibal was angry that Will caught him, even lashing out at Will from inside his cell, unable to see or even admit to himself that it was his own fault. He kind of knew it in the back of his mind, but he didn't want to accept it. His anger at Will was almost artificial, like he was looking for an excuse to not blame himself.

On top of that organs is a very uncommon trophy. Trophies are usually things that are easy to maintain (eg skulls, horns, skin or pelts etc) and organs are almost always eaten and are very highly prized both among hunter tribes and the animal kingdom in general.

    @FullmetalSP1@FullmetalSP13 жыл бұрын
    • I think he means they are parts one would generally select as prime or specific parts used for cooking, like how there's a best part of a cow. Especially when it comes to human meat, because we're not exactly like other animals, most of our meat is too fatty or under developed or tough due to our modern way of living, and he also wasn't just choosing anyone for their parts, he was selecting specific people because of their features in these parts, like finding the best cow for slaughter if you want a specific part of the cow. So he was visually judging the quality of the meat on areas of people, to decide what best to take, but was also doing it in a ritualistic and very specific way. Pretty much any part from any random person would have been pretty much as "good" as any other, but he wanted the ones that specifically caught his eye.
