Sooo we kinda f-ed up one of the SSR Professor SP4 wheels on Project V8 RX-7 pretty bad backing up into a curb a couple weeks ago.. With nothing to lose and no time to get it professionally repaired before LS Fest West last weekend we took a stab at fixing the curb rashed wheel ourselves!

  • Absolutely great job!!! I’m going on my 50th year in the car biz. Started when I was 18 went on my own when I was 20. Painting panels,truck beds dyeing vinyl tops for car lots,interiors too. Then I was probly the first guy to paint a bumper on a car lot in ‘80 when Honda came out with a painted plastic bumper in the Accord. Weird how paint has changed over the years.When I started in ‘72 they were using lacquer and enamel. I remember the old Imron clear that started killing people. But man what an amazing clear. It was bullet proof and never needed to be waxed or polished ever. There’s Imron paint jobs out there that are still as glossy as they were 50 years ago. I started fixing rims about 30 years ago when a friend asked me to fix the rims on his Porsche. The rest is history. You did a really excellent job on a polished aluminum rim. I am very impressed. Most guys aren’t patient enough and guys that do it for a living have their short cuts because they have to get things done in a timely manner if they’re working for dealerships,but you really did an excellent job. You could have sprayed a little clear over it instead of polishing it for a longer lasting look,but really not necessary. Once again,I’m very impressed with your work ethic,your pride in your workmanship and your attention to detail. Take care and the more you do the better you’ll get at it Personally I think rims are a pain in the ass. Repairing the painted chrome ones is like matching a snowflake. But for some fun,check out Alsa and House of Color chrome paints. Spend some time on the Alsa site. They’ve got all kinds of cool stuff. I think you’ll like it. Sorry for flapping’ my lips and boring the hell out of you,but old guys do that sometimes. Take care,pal

    • Really enjoyed reading your comment, it's interesting to hear about the progression you've made and things you've experienced being a professional in the industry for 50 years! I want to fix up my own rims but kind of afraid, they are black also so will be a lot of work and not sure if my abilities will cut it. Hats off to you and others in your industry for making an art of such hard work!

    • I got pretty bad curb rash on all rims on a car i bought. Figured i use the rim's for the winter tires. Can I screw up the wheels doing this? Like will it throw off the balancing of my wheels? I realize itll take a lot of time but I don't want to spend the money right now for a professional.

      @stuntman014@stuntman0144 жыл бұрын
    • @@stuntman014 Not likely, because you're not taking that much metal off. You might throw the balance off ever so slightly, but I doubt it would be enough to be noticeable. I worked as an automotive technician for years and balanced 10s of thousands of wheels and it's surprising how much the balance of a wheel and tire can be off before it'll start to cause a noticeable vibration.

    • @@adrenalinehigh2070 he's not wrong i also repair wheels for a living and that's easily a 20 min job, the job he did I can do in about 10 mins. 15 mins if I have to throw a little toner on it and clear it to protect it. I only use a right angle die grinder with a 3m pad, 220, 400, 1500 then sometimes 2000 grit. Little polish on a micro fiber towel and done

Hitting with 80, 400,1000 and higher to polish works well. Did my rim in and got it looking a whole lot better in 20 min with this process. Masking off is key, especially with glossy black inserts like the 18/19 accord 19" wheels! Thanks for your video..

My very first set of wheels! #keepingitauthentic #fakepartsbreakhearts I don't have an air compressor, so using pneumatic tools isn't an option for me. Going to try to make use of my dremel, and flexible sanding block and sandpaper. Then wet sand, and polish.

This video was great and informative and helped me with something that I have never had to do before on my cars. The only question I have is when doing this on alloy clear coated wheels if the clear coat can be redone? I will check on the internet to see if buying clear coat in a can is a thing or not? Luckily my kerb rash is faily light but all four wheels are affected so I've got my work cut out for me. I have normal tyres fitted now, it is a 4X4 (Subaru Forester) so I figured chunkier tyres are going to be better anyway if I decide to do a bit of green laning ;-) Thanks for this, thumbs up.

  • I was at the car wash the other day and after I had taken my car through the tunnel(automatic touchless) I was wiping my car down with a rag and noticed a few spots on my rim that had gotten curb rash. I was super pissed because my car is relatively new and have never hit a curb with my car. I think the guide in the tunnel must've gotten my rim. I am someone who loves and appreciates my vehicles so I was pretty frustrated when I saw it. However, they're relatively small and after watching this video I have confidence they will be sanded out nicely. I'm on a tangent here but yeah I was so frustrated because I've committed myself to keep my car in superb condition which includes not using brush car washes anymore. Needless to say I'm no longer going to use that tunnel anymore and will pressure wash the car myself instead.

  • Pro-tip: silicon carbide sandpaper is waaaay better than red oxide for these kind of jobs. It's more expensive, but easily pays for itself because it is more long-lasting and gets sanding jobs done quicker. In an automotive shop it's really the only kind of sandpaper you should have around, it's just *that* much better.

    @drunkenmessiah@drunkenmessiah6 жыл бұрын
    • We only used the red oxide pads on the power sanders cuz that's what we use around the shop for general purpose stuff. All the hand sanding was silicon carbide sandpaper though (i added the product links in the description). Good point though!
