Fans of “The Walking Dead” will be excited to hear that Jeffrey Dean Morgan is stopping by to discuss his role as Negan in the hit AMC show. Negan is a charismatic, totalitarian ruler with an iron fist in the form of a baseball bat named Lucille. For Negan, there are no hidden secrets - you follow his rules, you live; you don’t follow his rules, you die. Interview at AOL HQ in NYC for BUILD Series.

They were both great characters..... governor got boring after awhile... Negan we could never get tired of
The governor was more of a hurt human being who kind of tried to shut down his humanity because he lost so much ....that's way more reliable to most people than a sociopath who is making sexist humiliating jokes while smashing people's heads without even blinking while brain matter splatters everywhere ....
The Governor was more relatable yes but they are both amazingly complex and human characters. The best way I would describe what Negan is... he is a hardened survivalist and manipulator with a god complex. He clearly was a troubled person before the apocalypse and with the downfall of society he realized that people like him... with his skill set and charisma, the own the world. People need a god. They need an idol, a deity to look up to and fear. And people need rules. Rick and Negan are kind of two sides of that. Rick is a reasonable and caring leader of a smaller, closer nit and easier to maintain group. Negan is a brutal and commandeering leader of a much larger group that is very hard to feed and control. They both have done terrible things to keep people alive. Just Negan is very much more confident and capable. Rather than working and reasoning he takes command of everything. He has his security in the amount of control he has.
They couldn't have chosen a better actor for this role.

Michael Hoffmann you're right. I'm not saying he's the only actor who could've played Negan, but Negan is very hard to pull off. It's such a beautifully written character and they needed an amazing actor for that role. JDM was, as far as I'm concerned, one of the best options, for a lot of different reasons.

If you cant control your feelings towards a TV character, so much so that you send hate mail and physically threaten the guy...you need mental help. Anyone who watches any of his interviews or here's about this guy, in general, knows he a really nice guy who is just a phenomenal actor. His responses are amazing and it seems like he truly does care and that's what will make him do so well as this character, he really gets it. I would love if the blueray has an extended part showing negan beat everyone's heads in, that would be so cool.

I don't think you can put "hate mail and threats" in the category of psychotic, but not the fact that you want a video of a guy bashing someones head in.
It's really cool if you are aware of your weak spots and personality, if you are actually able to reflect what makes you so uncomfortable, angry or whatever about a fictional character and what is it that irritates you that much, causing that big of reaction. If one has the ability to reflect, it can be really interesting and even helpful. That's it with most of these relatable characters or anti heroes. Why does it work so well , it's just a show ....but we all end up crying or punching a wall out of anger; even knowing it's just fake.

Maybe this should be a little bit of an eye-opener that Negan in the show isnt actually a bad guy, he isnt a bad guy in the sense that what he does isnt for pure enjoyment. I agree with Jeffrey on his Negan persona. Rick and the group killed about actually 40-50 of his people and all Negan had to do was kill 2 of Rick's in return in a pretty brutal way. I can't forget any of his words in the speech he gave to Rick's group. "I do not appreciate you killing my men. Also, when I sent my people to kill your people for killing my people, YOU killed more of my people. Not cool, not cool. You have NO IDEA how not cool that shit is." And so it's like Rick and the group can't accept that or see his point there. As much as the group has struggled surviving dangerous people, a lot of them not bad people, this is where they screwed up and fought a battle that wasn't their own to begin with and consequentially underestimated the Saviors. On the other hand, Negan coulda made it easier for them by picking the least popular dude in the group to kill or figuring out who will snap when he picks the wrong person or examining each character's subservience. And he is a little too passive in the demands to other communities and Rick's group is the one that will take him down. Sooner or later, Rick's group will have no other choice but to be a little villainous themselves

In 2 years, I’d never came across this JDM interview. Nuts! I just adore JDM’s portrayal of Negan. And JDM himself seems to be a really good person overall. Great actor but very relatable as a person.

The first time I watched this interview, I was so happy that he actually gave an explanation for that leaked Maggie death scene, then he said someone else died and I heard from a spoiler source that Aaron was the other one he killed in that particular take. It's fascinating that the cast and crew are very well aware of people spying on them to leak spoilers, so they'll purposely film fake footage and allow it to be released in order to throw us off.
JDM brought the walking dead back, after season 5 I was only really watching it for completion and then Negan came in and it brought an entire new atmosphere to the show and really brought it back for me. JDM portrays Negan really well and he is an amazing actor.
He looks like a combo of Robert Downey Jr., Javier Bardem, Olicer Reed, Brendon Urie, Gerard Butler, Tom Hardy, Paul Reubens and Alan Cumming
He could play Iron Man's brother, for sure.

Negans character is smart for many reasons. He knows how to push people, how to pick out their weaknesses. He makes a lot of mistakes, one of these days (episodes), someone is going to catch on.
