Welcome to Way of Thinking! In this video, we hear Alan Watts talking about The Spectrum Of Love.
Drawing upon his deep understanding of Eastern philosophy and spirituality, Watts shares his insights on the natural flow of love within us and how failing to acknowledge and express it can lead to destructive consequences.
Through his engaging and captivating style, Watts urges us to embrace the full range of emotions that make up the spectrum of love, from infatuation to compassion. He reminds us that love is not just an external force, but something that starts from within, and that we must learn to cultivate self-love to experience true happiness and fulfillment.
Who is Alan Watts?
Alan Watts (1915-1973) was a prominent British philosopher, writer, and speaker celebrated for his significant contribution to bringing Eastern philosophy and spiritual ideas to the Western world. Originating from England, he cultivated a profound interest in Buddhism and Taoism during his early years. In the early 1930s, Watts moved to the United States, where he played an incredibly important role in shaping the counterculture movement of the 1960s.

  • Ah, my dear interlocutor, you have stumbled upon the cosmic dance floor of existence, where the humorous melodies of life twirl and tango with the absurdity of it all. So, let us embark on a whimsical journey into the realms of existential hilarity. Imagine, if you will, a cosmic jester with a twinkle in his eye, merrily skipping through the ethereal dimensions. He whispers secrets to the stars, chuckling at the seriousness with which we humans ponder our purpose. With a mischievous grin, he asks, "What is the meaning of life?" and promptly bursts into laughter. You see, my friend, life is the ultimate cosmic prank, a never-ending game of hide-and-seek. We chase after meaning like a dog chases its tail, only to discover that it was within us all along, wagging with laughter. We strive for success, fame, and fortune, thinking they hold the key to happiness, only to realize that happiness dances in the simplest moments-a good cup of tea, a belly laugh, or the sheer absurdity of existence itself. But do not fret, for in this cosmic circus, we are all clowns in the grandest of shows. We put on masks and costumes, playing our parts with gusto, unaware that the audience is also part of the spectacle. We chase after goals and achievements, desperately clinging to the illusion of control, while the universe chuckles, knowing that the punchline is in the impermanence of it all. So, my dear seeker of wisdom, if you find yourself pondering the meaning of life, take a step back and join the cosmic laughter. Embrace the delightful uncertainty, dance with the absurdity, and remember that the joke is on all of us. Life is not a riddle to be solved but a cosmic comedy to be enjoyed, so let us have a good laugh and savor every moment, for the punchline is always in the here and now.

    • Wisdom, you have assimilated and made many of Watts’ ideas your own, into an art form uniquely you, out of your own awakening. I am likewise devoted to Watts’ wisdom. Enough, to restructure my perspective on life by the blueprints of eastern philosophy as Watts explains it. This involves journaling…mostly paraphrasing in style like yours, poetry or whatever form suits the inspiration. By this, I seek to adjust the aperture of my ordinary self-conscious awareness into a focus honed by Watts and other great thinkers. Watts didn’t believe in what he taught…he knew of what he spoke. I want that same certainty of direct experience (Satori) by Watts’ pointing.

  • 🤣. Preaching is moral abuse. I find it painful to dive too deeply into tne Alan Watts rabbit holes; one reason is that I’m really really p****d off that I didn’t know about him at all when I was searching in the late 60s/70s. I fear he will hold so much for me, that I am fearful of knowing’. All that I have listened to is already hugely, well to use his own words ‘is it worth taking the gamble’. I always look at comments after watching most videos. And I find reading comments about AW disconcerting, as frequently people say how relaxing they find him, I don’t I find myself in a low state of anxiety. I love his voice, tone, cadence, timbre. It represents a , yet another big journey and I have had many. I would loved to have met him, I was part of subcultures, radical intellectuals, poets and creatives. Perhaps I will take a bigger step, summon more grit and grace. ✨

    • You should be more Pssd off that he has the audacity to teach about Love. He cheated on all of his partners and had 7 children with 3 women whom he never saw. If you listen closely, that cadence, tone, and timbre is all he is.. There's nothing behind it. He never taught, he entertained. Personally, I don't take advice from hypocrites. Oh and if you DID meet him he would have just tried to drunkenly seduce you.
