Zephyrus G14 2023 RTX 4080 Ultimate Performance and Temperature Tweak Guide

As a ridiculously happy owner of an Asus Zephyrus G14 2023 with the RTX 4080 GPU, I've been trying all sorts of craziness to reduce temperatures while increasing performance. And based on what I'm seeing, I may have just succeeded in that endeavour. If you have the Zephyrus G14 with RTX 4080, follow my lead and significantly drop your temperatures while losing no performance whatsoever. Curious?

    • Much appreciated! I'll be posting another video tonight, showing ideal settings and performance in Starfield, and I'll talk about this in the video, but I noticed something. The G14 can perfectly handle any game you throw at it, but Starfield brings it to its knees thermally. With settings at ultra and at 1600p, the CPU temp stays around the low 80's, even with the tweaks I mentioned in my video, while the GPU is mid-high 70's. Normally, this wouldn't be a problem, but I found that my G14 completely shut down mid-game twice while hovering at these temps. I don't know if it's Starfield-specific, or my particular laptop has a lower safety power off threshold. Note that this was with the optional 280w power supply and simply elevating the laptop. I picked up a used IETS GT300 to test, and with the same settings, am down to the low-mid 70's. I also switched back to the original 240w power supply, because the laptop wasn't exactly drawing additional power for the GPU with the extra space. Running the game at medium settings has the laptop as cool as a cucumber, around the mid 60's. So far, this is the only game that has caused such wild swings in temps depending on the graphics settings. I can't confirm if the different psu was the cause of my shutdowns, but I suspect that was the issue. I'm curious if any other G14 owners experienced similar issues with the game, but the radio silence on reddit leads me to believe it was my stupidity in buying a different psu.

    • Being someone who has four different gaming laptops in their house right now, I am severely impressed by the 4060 and 4070. While I obviously love the 4080 in the g14, I do think the 4060 model makes more sense - the 60 and 70 max out at 100w effective, and a 14” thin and light is a great place for that. This is just anecdotal, but both the 4060 in the legion pro 5 and the 4070 in the slim 7i feel like they perform about the same, if not slightly less, than the 4080 g14. My only guess is that a 125w 4080 (usually 115w) leaves a ton of potential on the table. Again, I love the 4080 g14 and have zero regrets. But I am telling you that saving money and grabbing the 4060 version will make you incredibly happy. It’s a very capable gpu.

I heard a lot of hate for the 4070 over the past few months, but here’s a little perspective - it’s between a 3070ti and a 3080 at only 100w. And has frame gen. If hardcore gaming isn’t a big priority for you, the 4070 would be awesome.

  • Love the video. But I ad a question - Should I go for the 4090 version or the 4080. I am kind of not really that motivated to go for 4090 due its 125 W issue - you cant even get the full performance out of it and I feel at that level 4080 is a good option. What do you think?

    @blackmane1999@blackmane19995 ай бұрын
    • The 4090 will obviously perform better, but as much as I love the g14, anything over a 4070 is a bit of a waste. The 125w 4080 usually hovers around 110-115, and you leave a LOT of performance on the table considering the cost. Between the 4080 and 4090, I honestly think the 4080 makes more sense.

    • It really depends on how important portability is to you. The legion is a beast and I adore them, and you’ll get a full 4080 experience with it. That being said, having a slightly underpowered 4080 in a gorgeous little 14” machine? Yes. A thousand times yes.

    • @@RAIIYNMeh. I don’t say that to disparage the new model or anyone who likes it, because it’s a gorgeous new laptop - all metal, very subtle and business like…and honestly, I think the 4070 limit makes a lot of sense for the form factor - you’re still getting a gpu that nips at a 3080ti while only using 100w. However, I still like the 2023 model more. I like the feel of the magnesium alloy chassis, I love the white gamer vibe, I love the anime matrix, and yeah…I love the underpowered 4080. Because it has extra vram and kicks the poop out of the 4070, even at reduced wattage. Besides, the 8th gen ryzen in the 2024 model is the exact same chip as the 7th, just with more AI crap. It’s ultimately going to be about what you want from a 14” laptop. The 2024 model is definitely sexy and hits a component sweet spot. But I still like the 2023 model because it’s a 14” gaming laptop that walks into a party and proudly says “I’m going to mess some crap up. Hold my beer.”

    @Glossah@Glossah9 ай бұрын
    • That's an interesting question. The only reason I can't definitively answer is because I didn't know G-Helper even existed before getting the 2023 one. 😞 When I had the 2022 G14, I do remember just setting CPU boost on efficient aggressive and never running into throttling or other issues. I think with that model, the key for me was the Ryzencontroller app - I think I limited the tdp to 35 or 45 (I can't remember) using a slider, and that was a real sweet spot for that machine - great FPS, acceptable temps, no loss in performance. What I would say is that I used Legion Toolkit on the slim 7 AMD with the same cpu and gpu as the 2022 G14, and disabling CPU boost had more of an effect on performance with the 6-series ryzen cpu's. I think it's worth installing G-Helper, uninstalling Armoury Crate, and trying all of the tweaks here. Open G-helper and the fan pop up on a second screen, run a game, and monitor/tweak as you go. At the very least, making the fan curve more aggressive will help a lot with temps.

    @altun8310@altun83109 ай бұрын
    • Now that I have it peaking at 79-80 maximum, I'm not at all worried. I have to believe that, after a few years without any heat-related lower screen issues, Asus knows what they're doing with design. I could very well be missing cases, but I haven't seen any people on Reddit or otherwise mention screen damage due to heat exhaust. I mean, it shouldn't work, but it somehow does. It's like wizard magic to me at this point. If I leave CPU boost on, the CPU is hitting low 90's and the top part of the keyboard area right under the screen is untouchable, and so is the air coming out of it, but I still think it's mostly hitting the plastic right under the bottom of the screen, and the air itself cools dramatically the second it leaves the heatsink inside. Currently, with the way I have it set up, it is extremely comfortable, and the heat being generated doesn't worry me nearly as much as before.

    • I don’t think I could ever find enough words to express “YES” properly. The 2024 is great. It’s got a gorgeous body, nice screen, and looks fantastic. By the 2023 also has a very well built body, a gorgeous 500 nit screen, and a 4080. Yes, it’s a lower wattage 4080, but it’s still a 4080 with 12gb of memory. Add to that 9-10hrs battery life… Honestly, you can’t go wrong with either. I just feel like the 2023 is more compelling and has a LOT of awesomeness going for it.

  • Hay mate. I am searching for a Laptop i wasnt sure wich size or Laptop should i buy... I saw flow x16 and m16 they have battery life Problems... Because mostly Intel... I dont have a seperate monitor or something. There is Like you said offers of a 6800s (g14 - 1800 CHF) or the rtx 4080 with 12 GB grafic ram, 32gb ram, 1TB with mini LED for 3000 CHF. For me is important battery life and no heats and good for gaming. And not to Big! Thats why i always looked for g14

    • I mean...I'm loving my 4080 G14. I picked up a used Asus 17" portable monitor, thinking I'd want the extra real estate, but I prefer the G14's native screen because it's so bright and sharp. I even use an external keyboard, so the screen is further away from me, and it's been perfect. Ultimately, it will come down to personal preference, so I can only speak from my perspective. When it comes to heat...I mean, both the 6800s and the 4080 model get HOT. I have tweaked mine so it idles in the high 30's/low 40's, and it peaks at 80 degrees during intense gaming, but it still gets warm. The WASD keys on the 4080 are cooler than on the 6800s model for sure. In terms of battery life, I think the mini-LED will get worse battery than the non mini-LED, but I could be wrong there. With my tweaks, I'm getting just over 8 hours of casual KZhead/web browsing. The 4080 (or all of the 40 series G14's) have a couple of advantages, like 16gb soldered (the 6800s version only has 8, so I was running around with 24gb ram and it drove me nuts) and a slightly better webcam. My last comment is that the 4080 in the G14 is obviously faster than the 6800s, but from a purely anecdotal perspective, I don't notice a huge difference between the two in games that I play. I will go to my grave stressing that the 6800s was one of, if not the best laptop GPU of 2022, and it disturbs me that more people aren't talking about it. It is an absolute beast. For you, you'll have to make the decision for yourself. I stick with the 4080 for future proofing (12gb vram) and Frame Generation, but the 4060 gets frame gen as well.

    • Yeaa its just a huge price difference. Idk if they gonna drop a bit. Its Hard Finding good offers. But its a future invest i think with the 12 GB vram in grafic. Could you send me a link where you buyed the Monitor + Tastatur ? Could Check it out. Do you always need to Run the Laptop open for it when your in the Desktop or can it work closed?

      @julijanlj.9195@julijanlj.91958 ай бұрын
    • That's a tough one because I bought it used off of Facebook, but the model is the Asus XG17ahpe. There were a ton of others on Amazon, but they don't have the response time of the XG17. One exception, if you can find it - look for a 16" portable monitor with 1600p 165hz (NOT 1440p 120hz). There are some no name manufacturers using the same panel as in the Legion 5 pro/Legion 7 for their portable monitors, and it is a FANTASTIC screen. The keyboard I got is an Asus Azoth, which is a great little keyboard but absolutely NOT worth the insane money I paid for it! You definitely should run this laptop lid open, as the heat in part escapes at the top of the keyboard. I might be wrong on this, but the G14 needs to be open at all times during operation. @@julijanlj.9195

    • Thank you a Lot 👍 yea i thinked too that it has to be open all time. Is a question if it annoys or not. If you try it let me know the results 😂 would be interesting

    • I have a big desk, with a main 32" monitor in the middle, my XG17 in portrait mode next to it on one side, and my g14 on a stand on the other side - I actually prefer it open. As for closing the lid, I've been doing some Reddit reading, and have discovered that it would be a bad idea for anything above very light browsing - some of the main heat is evacuated out along the top of the keyboard, and while I think these vents are exposed when the lid is closed, the area along the top next to the power button gets VERY hot under load. I'd rather not risk it! 🙂@@julijanlj.9195

    • Silly questions - do you have the 2023 g14? Updated to bios 310? There are no advanced settings, really - you click Fans + Power next to turbo to get to all of the undervolting stuff.

    • @@youplay.nostalgia it might be that the intel cpu is locked down? I know that most 11th gen intel CPU’s were locked in bios so you couldn’t undervolt them - might be similar for you unfortunately :-( Is the fan plus power button greyed out for you? If you can click it and it opens the pop up, can you at least adjust the fan curve?

      @ktbpylon@ktbpylon8 ай бұрын
    • @@ktbpylon Yes can do that and also adjust turbo boost and limit but no undervolt option.

      @youplay.nostalgia@youplay.nostalgia8 ай бұрын
    • Yup - sounds like you got hit with the 11th gen Intel lockdown 😞 My only advice is to see if there are previous versions of your bios that allow undervolting, and to see if you can downgrade your BIOS version. I did that when I had an X17 R1 with an i7-11800h. Sorry I can't help more!@@youplay.nostalgia
