The Original Chateau Doors. Ep 27

Bonjour à tous,
This week at the chateau, the race is on to get the building watertight before the bad weather surrounds the family. Ash starts by repointing all the old window frames as each one is letting water run straight under neath and into the chateau, destroying the beautiful wood paneling. He also starts to restore one of the large original rear windows and paints the beautiful windows catches in the stunning copper/gold colour.
The rear double door are collected which was originally the main entrance doors for the chateau and the large double window above that had sadly blown out when we had some bad weather.
And If you would like to join us on our family journey restoring this once abandoned château, then please just follow the link below, 🥰

ABOUT US,
We are a family from the North-East of England following our dream to restore a beautiful abandoned french Château. We discovered the heart stopping Château De Lalacelle in summer of 2020, this beautiful architectural monument Is set in the countryside of North-West France.
The moment we visited the Château we all fell in love, from the beautiful sweeping landscape and forests, to its stunning untouched interiors and magnificent spiral staircase in the turret.
Unfortunately Château De Lalacelle has been abandoned for a number of decades so will need a lot of restoration and DIY.
Please subscribe and follow our families journey, with the up’s and down’s in moving from the UK to rural France and restoring this beautiful building to its former glory.

  • Ok, now where was Master Jonathan, during this episode? My grandkids like seeing him do a little work here and there. They get inspired and actually now get to help round the house. They actually ask if I need help, and that's because of young Master Jonathan, so he deserves a mention on this "Show" too!👏👏👏👏👏

  • I really love how cheerful all of you are during this entire process. Terry has to know he has the parents of the year for them to pull up stakes and come to another land, language and home away from all they knew and throw in and be really supportive and good about it is not the experience of many people. Remarkable.

  • What great luck that you found a craftsman to make new doors and a window for the château.

  • Great to see you are using Lime mortar - next time wet down the area before applying the lime and this will help to stop the lime mortar from cracking. After applying the Lime you want to keep the area damp/covered for few days to slow the curing, which reduces chance of cracks. One of the best resources on Lime is Nigel Copsey - you will find many videos on YT of him teaching classes on the subject. Also, you will find Michael James Design YT channel very informative. (If you use NHL - never use NHL 5 - it's basically like cement. Usually Hot Lime is best for period buildings, but if you prefer to use an NHL, use NHL 2). Regarding silicon - anytime you use silicon in contact with wood it will rot. Instead the best material to use, especially if you are sealing between wood and stone - use Oakum (roll it in your hand and use a packing tool to pack it in. Oakum is used by shipwrights to water seal wooden boats - it will seal your joint and not damage the wood, stone nor mortar.

  • Big warning to Ash. You would be wise to use a properly sealed respirator with the correct filter fitted when spraying paint, especially when using Hammerite. A man in my village died very quickly because he was spraying paint and did not use the correct PPE.

  • Ash, I had to do that to my windows in my last house, all 27. To try to make it go quicker I put the mortar inside a pastry bag, when that wore out I used a ziplock bag, cut a corner off then squeezed it on and something like a bendable rubber spatula to smooth it out, not only was it faster to put on but it looked like a professional did it and the clean up was a breeze. I agree about the view, absolutely beautiful, Thanks for sharing🙂

Also, how much hard work it will be to do with the height that has to be reached to do it! I’m just glad it won’t have to be me to make that climb. No chemicals, it does a great job if you are looking to bring out details. Cheap and very effective. NEVER US FOR FOOD because of the lead paint on the metals.
