As beautiful as this vehicle is, I think what is truly astonishing is the level of direct personal involvement of all parties that were involved with its creation -- from inception on a literal piece of paper to the presentation of the finished product you've just watched here. It's clear that at every turn, the utmost respect was given to design choices, materials, and craftsmanship. At a certain point, it transcends simply being a motorcar. • I'd love to know about the wood features. Is it solid hardwood or a veneer? If veneer what is the base material? I'm basically concerned about moisture ingress causing warpage. I especially like how the end grain aligns, and how difficult it would have been to achieve that. I initially thought that they would have cut the 45° slice off the end of each side, and thought that the inside corners would have had a lot of separation, so were bound to be misaligned. But then it occurred to me that they only needed to make a single 45° cut, and turn one end upside down and rotate it. This would give perfect alignment of the grain, but would work better with veneer than with solid timber. I haven't worked out how they could have done the curved wood grain behind the seats. That is frankly mind blowing! It's a sensational build, and belongs in an art gallery rather than on the road.

    • The wood is veneer, most likely ebony (macassar ebony is my guess) and it's not hard to create such a pattern. Obviously the 45 angle is the split between 2 panels of veneer which have been turned into each other. Veneer is flexible and if glued on a flexible substrate you can create these bends like behind the seats. As long as the substrate is moisture resistant and the glue and lacquer are as well, you can use it outside in the weather. With that said the veneer is the most beautiful part of the car because it looks like a concept car from Hyundai from the 90s.

This statement I find ridiculous, even though you did caveat it with the fact that it's your opinion. Timeless is a concept as EVERYTHING is affected by the passage of time. I've seen quite a few designs called timeless, even those of previous Rollers and Bentleys, but look at them now and they are as dated as hell. The only difference is that they managed to maintain some consistency. 2. "without seeming to be ". Gives you a lot of leeway to be wrong. Don't have an issue with that.

  • Best presentation ever on JWW, imo. A stark and pleasantly surprising contrast to the otherwise rather loud "new-rich" kind of episodes, this one is exceptionally well filmed successfully showing and transporting the subtle and sophisticated design very well indeed. I have to admit this is the only episode I watched several times just to take in all the impressions of proportion, linework and lovingly developed details of the car. I was not so sure about this car, seeing the black and burgundy red "La rose noire" version first but this "Amethyst" one makes perfect sense to me. I love it and now I also do support and understand the design deviations from the traditional Rolls Royce style elements. It is an exquisite design that really shows the 4 1/2 years of development and excecution. It seems like a car from a completely different universe than the rather crude and clunky "London Taxi styled" Cullinan... Nice work indeed, both the car and video...! BRAVO...!!!

  • RR can use as much rich and textured language as they like, but 28m is a just a joke. I’m sure the hand built and bespoke nature of it, and the undoubtedly quality and attention to detail makes it a ‘special’ car, but the price is absurd. I may be in the minority, but I think it’s ugly. The only good angle is head on level with the lights. Money aside, nothing about this car is desirable to me, beyond what they already have

It takes one of thousands, or more of woodworkers who know how to fabricate wood in this manner. Same with the body, same with everything on the car. I love the idea of a one off, coach built vehicle like in the old days, but $28 million, come on! 👍😎✌🗽
