Sir Winston Churchill was an undoubtedly skilled strategist and war hero, but Churchill’s power lay in his eloquence in his speech and writing. When weaponry and resources were limited, it was his high impact speeches that rallied Britons to believe they could win the war. In 1951, King George the 6th died, to the surprise of the nation, leaving his eldest daughter Elizabeth to take his place as queen, aged only 25. The relationship between the Queen and her first prime minister was one that wasn’t always smooth sailing but developed into a long-lasting bond.

It covers Churchill's early life, his beginnings in politics and his involvement in the Boer war, his capture and imprisonment by the Boers and his courageous escape and flight behind enemy lines to Portuguese East Africa. We're all pretty familiar with his later years but this is a part of his life that I hadn't known much about. Great book!

  • I was lucky enough to be born in 1951 so during my lifetime SIR. WINSTON S. CHURCHILL was prime minister. My father was born on Madeira Island, Portugal in 1915 and Churchill would spend many hours on Madeira painting! I have been to the resturant in Camara Del Lobos on Madeira. Well worth the visit. SIR. WINSTON has been one of my life’s heroes, even if he really didn’t like women. I also love the stories about Churchill’s determination to land with the troops onto the beaches of Normandy on D-DAY until the KING GEORGE VI has to tell him if he was going then the king would have to go as well. Naturally-- Churchill was persuaded not to go to protect the king. I also love the stories about how Churchill would try to get to the rooftops in order to witness the bombing of London by the Luftwaffe totally disregarding the danger to himself. The only person who had ANY INFLUENCE upon Churchill was his wife Clementine and mostly he did exactly what he wanted to do.

However the USA only declared war on Japan, but because Germany was an Allie of Japan they declared war on the USA leaving the USA no choice but to reciprocate. Which is we finally entered both the war in Europe and the war in the Pacific.

  • I absolutely admire Churchill and all that he stood for, but there's one area that disturbs me about his influence on the Queen and that is how Princess Margaret and Townsend's romance got throttled. I know the Queen Mother had her nasty hand in the background of all of this but I feel that the pressure by both Churchill and the Queen Mother was enough to influence the Queen to view their marriage in a negative light. I have never been fond of the spoiled Princess Margaret, but the pressure that was put to her to give him up was horrendous and unwarranted. The Queen was put in an untenable position and she was too new at the job to stand up to the both of them which I'm sure she would have done if it had happened later in her reign.

  • British War Cabinet Crisis May 26 - 28th 1940 - When the BEF were trapped at Dunkirk the initial estimate was that only 45,000 could be evacuated . France was nearly defeated , the Americans were maintaining their position of isolationism , and the Soviets had a non aggression pact with Hitler . Under these conditions , Lord Halifax was baited into meeting with the Italian Ambassador , who offered to mediate a peace agreement with Hitler . What followed over the next few days were a series of heated meetings . Facing the loss of much of the BEF , Lord Halifax wanted to explore negotiating terms with Hitler . Churchill said Hitler never honoured any agreement and would turn Britain into a slave state . In the end , Churchill did an end round on Halifax and was able to persuade the 25 member outer Cabinet to keep fighting . Had Churchill not been able to persuade the cabinet to keep fighting , Hitler would have released a much stronger Wehrmacht on the Soviets . Regardless of who won , either the Nazi's or Soviet's would have ruled nearly all of Europe , North Africa , the Middle East and Russia . The world would have become a different place . For this reason , the War Cabinet Crisis is one of the defining moments of the 20th Century . .

  • I don't think much about Elizabeth ll . She was soft spoken and spoke very little Usall thing was Christmas greethings from Queen Must be a recorded message very little. message was every year same I always felt what sort of message for her nationr why can't say much is that much by words she could offer to her nation? After war Lord Churchill was very quite Even Diana's wedding we saw him very little I just remember him he was very generous towards Diana. Gave her one million pounds or Four million pounds How he got that much money? How much was his salary as a Lord? High rakies did rob the banks regularely? Queen was head of the Church l wonder was she faithful to Prince Philip ? I don't think so But most people thought she was very faithful woman.

  • This is complete nonsense, everything what the narration says is ridiculous. And the pictures are just some random salad from the war.

  • Why us the queen's accession paired with a photo of FDR, who died in ''45? Sloppy photo editing, here and elsewhere.

  • I don't know why I got the Spanish language version. As a Spanish language speaker, I must say that the translation is worst than awful. And I cannot understand how on earth you chose a non-native Spanish speaker, whose accent is terrible. .ENYUGANDO SUS OYOS??? It is so disapointing to hear that woman. And the translation of the text...!! Was it done by an automatic system? It is so full of basic mistakes, that it hurt my ears. If you ever do a documentary again, please get professional advice. As a translator myself, I just considered this disrespectful with your audience. Sincerely🤦
