  • As a Leeds fan, just want to say thanks to all the fans of our old rivals leaving positive comments. Even if worst comes to worst and the season is vetoed, it means a lot that you'd enjoy the competition again. It was a hell of a lot of fun back in the day. Hope we all get to finish this season. Was likely to be one of those era-defining ones before the obvious.

  • The biggest thing about Leeds getting promoted to the PL, will be the introduction of one of the most copied, fabled, and looked up to managers in the world, managing in the greatest league on the planet. It will be such a great opportunity to see the groundwork Bielsa has laid for many of the other managers and players firsthand. We could be very possibly witnessing a Leicester situation within the first several seasons. The last thing I will say about Marcelo is, he took the job at Leeds for two reasons; first he fell in love with the town and it’s people, and secondly, he wanted the challenge of a lifetime.

  • Leeds United have reached the Premier League. In fact, they are Champions. The deaths of Jack Charlton, Trevor Cherry, and Norman Hunter, plus Leeds United being in their Century year; and finally the attendance of the amount of Leeds United fans attending "Away Matches" makes it even more special. And with all that puts the name of Leeds United on the back pages of most national newspapers across the land. Leeds United promotion means a lot to English football. More than people want to realize or care. In Scotland, the Leeds United side of the 1970s created the first biggest match between a top English side against a top Scottish side and that was Celtic. The biggest attendance at a British football match ever took place (135,000 fans at Celtic Park) at a European Cup semi-final match between Celtic v Leeds United in 1970..(still a record today). Leeds was the first modern superstar side from England that took to playing more like the Continental side than everyone else at the time. Due to Don Reviews' fascination with Real Madrid. He wanted his Leeds United side to play like them. Instead of trying to get the ball forward as quickly as possible to their wingers or center forwards. The Leeds United Don Revie side of the 1970s took a sidestep to all of that. Possession of the ball was the name of the game. A bit like Manchester City's style of play today; or sometimes like Spain's tikka taka style of football from 2008 to 2012... But this was a style of football from an English football side during 1970: that included aggressive steel that was needed to survive the competitiveness of the English division football at that time (1970). However, they got the whole of the British press talking. This wasn't happening in London, but in Yorkshire. To be precise It was happening within the city of Leeds. Leeds United was the first side to truly go for the "treble" within England which included the European Cup. They captured the whole nation's attention at the time as they were going for the European Cup, The Original Division One championship, and The Fa Cup... And they were only using 14 players to achieve this... and at the time the rules only allowed you 1 X substitution per match,.. ... They lost the lot. But the media's attention to Leeds United during the early to mid-1970s was immense. The FA cup final of 1970 in which they played against Chelsea went to a reply. It reached national news as it was, and still is considered the dirtiest Fa cup final ever in which Leeds United lost. Leeds United was refused time off by the English football authorities for fixture consumption, which eventually led them to lose the League championship to Everton by 1 X point. After the season had finished the English media was transfixed with Leeds United. It was a case of how many of the English players of the Leeds United side were going to be selected for Sir Alf Ramsey's defense of the 1970s World cup. Paul Reaney, Terry Cooper, Paul Madely, Norman Hunter, Jack Charlton, and Allan Clarke were all asked to be included within England's World cup at squad (1970). It was going to be the Leeds United defensive backline taking hold of the English World cup defense of their World Cup, apart from the inclusion of Bobby Moore in that defensive back four... However, Paul Reaney (Leeds United) broke his leg close to the beginning of the World cup of that year (1970). Paul Madely(Leeds United), turned down the offer as he stated that he was totally "exhausted" due to the sheer number of matches he had played that season (1970). That just left Terry Cooper and Allan Clarke who accepted the invitation and went with the English squad (1970) to defend their World cup... It was that season (1970) that put the name of Leeds United on everyone's lips across the British media and the English nation. They went on to amaze, shock, disappointment, and more..in the coming years. In fact, they raised a few eyebrows in the coming seasons when they became the first English club to attract a major sponsor on the fronts of their shirts...even in front of the national side which was England. They managed to attract the firm called "Admiral" to advertise on their shirts. And then they approached the national team England, later on. And In between that time they lost historical matches between sides like Colchester and Sunderland within the Fa cup..,, They appointed Brian Clough to the club as manager. They created a record at the time of not losing a football match within Division 1 for 32 matches (I am sure I am correct, but please correct me if I am wrong) They reached a European Cup final.....

  • I think Leeds biggest mistake back then was signing Robbie Fowler from Liverpool. No one talks about this. At the time Leeds was already heavily in debt and they spent 11 mil (back then this was a lot) on Fowler who was going downhill, when they already had Viduka, Keane and Smith upfront. Even though Fowler did well initially I think this was when the team started to fall apart financially. Seth Johnson was another unnecessary expensive signing which completely backfired.

    • ^ this 100%... total unnessary signings particularly as kewell was a CF too and bridges was still at leeds also. They made a big bet on qualifying for the CL the season b4 and fell short so instead of being prudent they doubled up and spent more on unnessary signings

    • It’s also who they failed to sign. They were very close to signing Ronaldinho from Gremio, and also had significant interest in Van Nistelrooy well before Man Utd. Lampard was another one although I think his dad changed his mind. They were in the brink financially but probably manage to keep the books balanced if they hadn’t fallen out of the champions league. Ronaldinho alone could have changed everything.

  • The main reason why clubs want to see Leeds back in the Premiership is because of the fantastic following that they take to away games... It is a fantastic sight to see. When they are taking 5 to 7 thousand fans to every away game. Depending on the Other side tickets availability to them. The atmosphere at these games is brilliant because of it! Secondly because of their team's History - the 1970s side (Don Revie) and he side of 1999/2001 - (David O leary side). Both sides still to this day most UK football supporters up and down the country can name THE PLAYERS that played for both of those side playing team. That's how good those Leeds United teams were. At that time Harry Kewell when he played for Leeds he was unplayable ( He was our John Barnes) and so was Tony Dorigo and Rio Ferdinanda. That how good there were... Plus the 3 part of this Jigsaw is that they are a One city Club (Leeds United) who can generate massive fan support

The a-league might have saved a failing national football league buts it absolutely killed off the development of top class young footballers in the country. Look at the top class players we had in big European clubs back then compared to the last 5-10 years. Viduka and Kewell before his injuries were genuine world class and then you had quality players like Moore, okon, Zelic, lazaridis, Vidmar, Bresciano, Aloisi, Cahill, Bosnich, Schwarzer all quality players playing for good teams across Europe.
