"By 2026, players had learned that subpixels were well too large a gap, and many had taken to direct manipulation of the electrons in the wire that connected the controller to the console to save two millionths of a second. This was it. Humans had reached the limit of how fast Super Mario Bros could be played according to Einstein's estimates of the limit of light speed." "...but then..."
Unsurprisingly, some players decided to play the game with chips made up of ybco superconductors, thereby manipulating the flux pinning of the magnetic field, so as to direct the electrons toward the right bus of the system through quantum tunnelling, causing a stream of parallel muons and anti muons perpendicular to the electron stream and thereby shifting mario by the order of some trillion plank lengths in only some billion plank-seconds, thus saving the right time to reach perfection

Shigeru Miyamoto watching people utterly break his game: "I don't remember programing that..."
Tbh, this game's perfect speedrun (as in, the TAS which aims to complete the game as fast as possible under any circumstance) is a pretty clean run, playing *almost* as intended by the developer. Some fast accel's and FPG's here and there, few incorrect warps - that's about it. This is nowhere close to speed runs that completely break the game and go out of bounds all the time such as Half-Life 2 or instances such as Oblivion / Morrowind / GTA San Andreas (skipping the entire god damn campaign!) SMB speedun still needs to play all the levels that a normal player would do to beat the game quickly. No glitchy skips there. Mario64 was much glitchier in that regard, as players gradually discovered ways to beat the game with less and less stars (out of 70 that is originally required). They brought this down to 30, then to 16, then to just 1 and finally to 0.
@@alewis514 I think he's more talking about the little things, like wall jumps from the single frame thinking mario is standing up, and similar stuff like that. there's many times where I never realized I programmed something weird like that and when shown was at a total loss because it never crossed my mind I was implementing. in this case it was used for hit detection and probably to stop a bug, so leaving it in just meant the game worked, not to mention the game is nearly 40 years old.

It’s way better
This literally made me tear up. I love video games. I love the human condition. I could never have imagined this was the future of Mario, as a little kid at my grandmas just gaming away.
“He was more than a tenth of a second ahead of anyone else on the leaderboard. Pure domination” is such a testament to how optimised this speedrun is.

After 36 years it was bound to be optimized.
@@honkhill1355 I doubt anyone expected it to be optimized to the point where every frame matters in one way or another Still, it's an incredible display of skill
@@unnoticed4571 You are right, though even if it wasn't this frame optimized it would still look insane being just a few second behind a TAS. People worked very hard to get here and the results are impressive.
Me, a Summoning Salt scholar during a dramatic pause: 'It's either Matt Turk or AndrewG'.
His dramatic pause for "420 Blazit" was incredible.
I am surprised it isn't SSSniperwolf at this rate...
@@penfold1992 ?
I was thinking Darbian!
OMFG Niftski just did it 3 days ago ! I'm about to cry... He've done 4.54s 631 ! What a run
Truly, one of your best. You had a lot to work with, and you really nailed it. Bravo, Mr. Salt.
"It's physically impossible to go faster than this" We've heard that one before.
AYO WHATS GOOD
imagine using a keyboard, and keybinding a series of keys to an exact sequence of buttons, and then clicking them at *almost* the same time in such a way that they register in the game the way they need to. i figure that could get around the supposed impossibility of it, since that way a single finger wouldn't have to move at that speed, just the computers ability to register it. is that allowed?
@@davidlewis6728 no. It is not
@@davidlewis6728 as far as I remember, no. They have to use an unmodified nes controller
@@davidlewis6728 No speed run allows macros iirc
The community: That's completely impossible. The community: Fine, I'll do it myself!
Real 😳 😳 😳 😳 😳
Community : We are streets ahead
i’ve watched so many ads in this because i watched all of it straight in one sitting lol this was WAYYYY too interesting to not see in one sitting great video, love it
I can't tell you how perfect the intro music is. That alone make sme want to watch this with anticipation. Thank you for your work. Amazing.
29:32 - For some reason, I find it hilarious how Niftski is rightfully celebrating while Mario is just standing there, forced to helplessly watch that Buzzy inexorably bearing down on him.
"Hey uh, Niftski, I know you're celebrating and all but I'm about to die. Niftski? Niftski? NIFTSKI I'M GONNA DIE H-"

He should have used a controller. Then I'd be impressed
i love speedrun videos because it’s always "and this glitch couldnt be done.. until Xx_boogie420_xX did it"
Lol
Im honest, this is probably my favorite video on KZhead. Not just video essay. Favorite in general. I find myself coming back to it once a month or so
"2 frames from perfection" sounds like a great band name.
there's a film music company called "two steps from hell" that released a lot of very famous epic orchestra pieces. "2 frames from perfection" would be the chiptune equivalent, right?
@@HolyShinta Or the animation equivalent.
1 frame from perfection now*
@@GumSkyloard That'd be the company that makes music videos from the films
another exceptional 45 minutes spent, i LOVE these thank you salt
Pulse fire? A man of culture I see.
My cut is insane, shout out to my barber dawg
Unexpected seeing you here, I was just thinking I wanted to see some of your epic content. Please upload for me 👉👈
I would say its exceptional 44 minutes and 59 seconds spent, because in speed run, every Second counts 😌
45 minutes? It only took me 22:30!
This vid needs an update now
IT'S DONE
Bro ngl ur videos are the only ones I can watch for so long in full- very good pacing and voiceover and music is rly engaging. props to u man
All I gotta say is Peach better be grateful when she sees how much my man hustled to save her.
He gets all the cake after the speedrunners finish. On the table and in bed.
She was stuck for like 5 minutes to be fair
Bro at this rate, Bowser like just walks in the door. Mans doesn't even have time to take his shoes off before Mario is kicking the door down
