  • Yep, I bought a 1999 BMW E36 and the first thing I did was upgrade all the cooling system components with plastic parts to aftermarket stainless steel and aluminum parts. I have had zero trouble. I even swapped out my fading plastic headlights with glass headlights with the angel eys halo rings for safety. Older BMWs are very dependable as long as you maintain them and know what parts should be proactively upgraded.

The family fortune was made building the batteries for the U-boats in WW II, using slave labor. If you buy a BMW, you're supporting a family descended from a war criminal, whose war-crime fortune was how they came to control the company.

  • When I was a kid, we had an early-80s W123 Mercedes 230 E. It was such a classy car with a really smooth ride and it was quite a headturner on the road. Best part about it was it was built like a tank - a motorcycle once crashed onto the rear right side coming from the right and the rear right panel just got scratched and barely dented. It would rarely need to be serviced even after 10 years. Now my sister bought a brand new Mercedes E-class in 2022 that came with all the techy gizmos and such and she had to get it serviced after 9,000 kms because of a faulty climate control system (it was leaking freon from one of the pipes, lol).

    • My e46 323 wagon just crossed 200,000 miles, and I can't say I've had the same experience. It's a gorgeous car, but man does it have some issues. I drive it extremely conservatively as well, I probably cross 2000rpm once a month, but the thing just keeps finding new parts for me to order. The car really feels like it was built with maintenance being an after thought when I look at the way some of these parts were designed. Hopefully they're not all like that, because there are a lot of things that I love about it.

Wonderful cars the best driving experience I’ve ever had and I love them but in order for BMW to keep prices down they use plastic parts and the east coast winter just destroys them as the constant freezing then heating up of components really wears them out fast! My 2010 c6 sat on the hoist at the dealership for 6 months waiting for parts , the plastic line that went between the 2 gas tanks was Dry rotted, it cost $2200 because you couldn’t buy just the tube , you had to buy the tanks , without the level sensor. In fact, aside from a gas engine that proved more finicky than Morris The Cat (it rarely complained once they started feeding it Mobil "Super Plus," granted), they had very little trouble with the car. Alas, a cab driver ran a "STOP" sign and totaled the poor thing in 1990. After that, they went back to buying second-hand American cars.

Hell it has over 300k miles and that's probably a break in period for them 😂😂. I gotta say the automatic transmissions in those are pretty stout. Yeah they're slow but they're durable. I didn't even know that those old Volvos had Aisin Auto Transmissions in them and honestly, it shifts real good despite its age. If I am ever going to buy a emergency or daily driver, it'll have to be one of those old Bricks.

    • Yeah, certain people speak out of their AHs. Fiat (from 20 years onward) as like as Alfa are good cars. Comparable with German with maybe the exception of some material in the interior which can be better. BUT you MUST do their maintenance. They're not old push rod huge engines with low power that you can just mistreat. If they say to change oils and filters every 15000km, you HAVE to do that. And you HAVE to use proper oil, not just mineral crap...

  • Hi Scotty, thanks for a great Worst to Best on European cars. I know, I'm glutton for punishment, but I love BMW. Yes, WAY too much plastic! Way too many sensors. I owned an 88' 740i (E-38) and a 06' X-5 my wife drove. The 740 had its problems, but I lucked out twice living in San Jose, CA and finding a great mechanic. He was logical, diligent and fair. I could bring it in and we often played the analyzer game. He would try to diagnose by ear and sight often matching the expensive analyzer in diagnosis. Best yet, he never charged for plugging in a meter. The dealership there would charge over $200 to break out the instrument. I got an honest opinion and although parts were always expensive his labor was fair. I moved to Sacramento and again found a great independent mechanic who I kept unit I had to sell to move overseas. It went through a few head gaskets which are DOA from BMW yet amazingly covered. Went through three of them until no more leaks. If I move back I want to pick up another E-38 740i because of the styling. Any thoughts on thoughts on that generation? After that BMW made a glorified copy of the Toyota Camry. Oh, and a word to consumers. Buy Bosch parts made in Europe not China. MIdas Brake & Mufller talked me in to the cheaper Chinese brakes and it never worked the same. As for my 06' X-5 it was a gem and no oil leaks. Thanks again!

  • I drive a '13 528 xi, black outside, wide profile tires with awesome rims, white inside. Awesome car. I've had sensors start screaming at me a few times (passenger restraint system, adaptive headlights, etc), but funnily enough if you ignore them after a while the car takes the hint and fixes itself. Just faulty sensors due to the humidity of where I live, they eventually reset themselves and realize everything's fine lol

I think it did the same thing to MGB which my father adored. And people would compliment the car. It's a very solid car, and as a mom I felt safe driving the kids around. It was excellent in the winter. The quality, comfort, and luxury of the interior was just as good as BMW. But the cost of repairs, no good Volvo mechanics in my area, was more than what I could afford.😢

Had a Volkswagen Passat SEL Tubo Diesel - horrible electronics, was part of the settlement and drove for 3 years and received a $30k check from the dealership - the car got over 43 mpg. Now I only drive BMW’s, older 2011 328i convertible with an inline 6 is sweet and reliable and a 2014 535GT with the same reliable turbo engine as a number of other Beamers. That’s what people don’t realize, is MOST BMW’S just use a handful of engines, in an array of bodies. Swap out the horrible Run Flat Tires and you have an awesome driving machine!
