  • Scotty! Here’s a little inside info on the GM light truck rear end / front end differentials. GM sold American Axel to the company that took the manufacturing to Mexico. Now when it was American Axel, they did a partial pre-assembly of the Ring and Pinion gears and punched marked them so they new exactly which teeth had to match up. They then lapped in the ring and pinion to make them a matched set. After the set was lapped into tight tolerance, the set was dis-assembled, cleaned and final assembled to the punched marks they had been lapped into. Now when the assembly went to Mexico, they still lapped In The ring & pinion gears, but without the punch marks to match them back up. So after they were lapped, dis-assembled and cleaned, when they put them back together for final assembly the units have a mix-matched set, which have an oscillation of various degrees depending how out of match they are put back together. This resulted in so many warranty claims, GM brought back the differential production to Grand Rapids, Michigan where they completely refurbished 1/2 of a GM plant. To your point, all about profits.

Only major repair was replacing that stupid composite cam drive gear. GM went cheap and didn't use a timing chain. Good cheap transportation in my 20s.

    • We had a V6 back in 1980. In order to get the mileage the imports had they made the metal so thin that the hood would ripple on the highway like tinfoil. The radio being mounted vertically was also just plain dumb. Did they really think any aftermarket companies would design a stereo for such a piece of junk? The radio was AM only. The Citation was Motor Trend car of the year in 1980. You know who advertised most in Motor Trend Magazines that year? Chevy.

  • Interesting channel. Wonder how large his research and videographer staff is (so many editing cuts). Who's ever known an auto mechanic with such detailed information about parts suppliers, country of origin, corporate finance, etc. Always thought many people from Houston were hucksters (think Enron).

  • Scotty, now that ive seen your American and Asian rankings, i cant wait for your European rankings! Then you should do an overall ranking with the best 2 from each category( top 2 Asian, American. and European) compared to eachother!

  • Bought a 2019 Ford Ranger in July of 2019, truck has been decent so far. Had 2 issues in 2 years. Year 1, right out of the dealership, 200 miles, I had some electrical issue. Took em 2 days to get the part and diagnose. This year the battery went out on me, checked it, it was bad. Other than those two issues, the only complaint I have about the ranger is the thin as all hell body panels. They dent if you so much as look at them wrong. I guess all in the name of making the truck more fuel efficient. :/
