Great idea and smart purchase, I am looking forward to more of the salvage and recovery of your tools from the fire. • Thank you for all the details and taking the time to answer all our questions Brent! On the motor, if it was turning but had no power and didn't seem to come up to speed, Take off the top square box and check the capacitors, the start capacitor is most likely what is bad. Be sure to take a screwdriver and short the terminals to ground before touching them. If they are bulged, leaking or bad, this will keep the starting circuit from working. The capacitors are pretty cheap and an easy fix. Just a thought. Thanks again!

  • Hey Brent! I don't know a damned thing about laser cleaning but if you have an air jet function on your nozzle, wouldn't that help prevent that blowback problem you've noticed? Yeah, they're a "consumable," but stopping to swap out lenses eats up time you'd rather be doing something else. Yes, no? Love your stuff!

    • Generally you want some sort of exhaust system so it sucks all the particulates and vapors away. For that situation I'd say even a steel shop vac would help (mostly to avoid any spark issues)

      @SilvaDreams@SilvaDreams2 ай бұрын
    • @@SilvaDreams That too. The air flow would simply keep the tip clean. Having watched the rest of the vid now, I think that's what he's doing. I suspect he'll have everything cleaned before he concocts a fume hood/dust collector system. When does a redneck think linearly?

  • Awesome work on all this restoration, really nice to see all your gear come back to life. Just my two cents, but you might want to consider putting in a hose on the return side in the tank when you get a higher volume pump. All that oil splashing around will airate the oil tank and could shorten the life of the pump. A 90° barb and a old piece of hose clamped on would be all it takes. Might also be a worthy investment to throw a large magnet on the tank floor to pick up any particals small enough to make there way through the pick up screen.

  • That light or medium grey looks good on an industrial piece of machinery. ;-) I had a scary thought, what would happen if it was used on magnesium? Sounds like you can add a air jet function to blow off the residue, but somehow there should be a dust recovery system (cone around nozzle with a tube to a shopvac)?

  • if you use a shop vacuum to pull the dust and fumes out of that pipe (on the fitting at the bottom) it should help with the blow back. You could probably put the hose tip beside the laser gun and at least reduce the amount of blow back that hits the lens. Love seeing you get everything back up and running. most would just replace where you are repairing what tools you can

  • Some of the best laser rust removal video I've seen! Reedit has a whole sub for it - laser porn - but it's mostly manufacturer demo. Those demos have shown people running it over their hand with no ill effect but I don't think I'd sign up for that test. If I were you, I'd upgrade the ventilation and filtering though, that stuff is quite nasty and may take a while before you feel the accumulated effects. I'd also upgrade the goggles, get a couple pairs. I would be very hesitant to trust what they sent. Get something that fits tight around your eye sockets, even a reflected flash that sneaks in could damage your vision. You wouldn't even feel it nor see it :( I wouldn't let man nor beast into the shop while using that thing either, lock the doors. A stray reflection could ruin someone's day

  • That laser rust removal seems a lot nicer than sand blasting. Espeically on such a machine like this one. Much less clean up after. I have a small sand blaster that I have used for cleaning rust off wheels and such, prepping to paint. No blast cabinet, so I use cheap blast media and let it fall on the ground. This laser would work well for a lot of metal restoration of things that won't fit in a blast cabinet. I was thinging along the lines of a car frame. Not many people have a blast cabinet big enough for one of those. Motorcycle frames would be easy to do also. That is if the laser cleans of paint as well as rust. May have to do some research on these lasers.

  • I think the laser and a wire brush is way better than heavy sandbags and air hoses and sand gets into everything. Sandblasting is ok for maybe prepping a huge tractor for paint or huge beams etc. Lasers only needs a broom and dustpan for cleanup. I think you made a good investment

  • For the air purge you're using to keep the shielding optics clean, make sure it's dry, filtered air. Moisture and oil removal is essential and filter down to at least 5 micron. 1 or 2 micron would be even better. If you have oil or moisture in your air it could contaminate the focal lenses and those can get expensive. The best purge gas is actually pure nitrogen but clean, filtered, dry air will do.

    @robertatkinson3433@robertatkinson34332 ай бұрын
  • You can understand the purpose of the air / gas feed -- it provides shielding gas just like a MIG or TIG. So you can use it to help keep flying debris out of the gun / head. The advantage of the cutting is that the cut line is very thin, so it can help with super fine detail which a plasma cannot do. This especially comes into play on the machines which have XY controllers and cut out a pattern like you do on your plasma table. Also, laser cutting leaves less dross on the bottom of the part. For a production factory, this adds up. Probably would not matter much for you.

  • That machine is wild. I want one! How would it do on pitted sheet metal? E.g. to clean up so you can see what needs to be replaced versus poking with a screwdriver, hitting with a hammer, etc, to see what's solid vs compromised? Also, I think you should get better eye protection. What if the beam reflects off something shiny? Seeing you use it with those tinted safety glasses make me nervous.

    @jaredm450@jaredm4502 ай бұрын
    • That is what the glasses are for and why they wrap around to the sides. The hard part is finding the right wavelength the machine uses since it looks like a Chinese machine so documentation is a bit iffy at best so he'd have to buy multiple ones and see which one makes the beam not visible since it blocks it.
