In this videos I recorded it step by step the process of polishing axe blade & insert axe handle.
I hope you find something useful & enjoy from this video!
I am happy to receive your feedback, advices, suggestions to improve myself.
!!! I make this video for just curious & challenge, so please accept my apologies if I have made mistake in this restoration !!!

  • I really like the design of the axe head. I found an old half rust eaten hewing axe head from the 1800s in my dad's backyard in Bremerton, WA. A few YT videos later and a couple gallons of vinegar and some TLC, now it hangs as an awesome piece of art in my brother's house with a red cedar bark frame and a curly maple handle. Just do it👍

  • You should use rust removers to not destroy the temper of the axe unless you use a wire wheel and then sand very lightly using the disc, I personally don't think you really destroyed the temper cause you sanded so lightly for the most part, oh and another tip is always glue a wooden wedge before inserting, it will stay inside better and make it a bit stronger too. A couple good rust removers are Krud Kutter and Evapo-rust

  • I don't know if the high polish finish is going a bit too far. See it in a lot of restoration videos and I think it makes the axe look cheap in some way. Perhaps a case of less is more here. There is a beauty in something looking forged or rustic.

  • Nice work but you should have just polished the blade instead of the whole head of the axe. You would have kept the maker's mark... which as it goes was a really nice one... and a blackened/pitted surface would have given the axe a look of age. What you've ended up doing is taking an old axe with some nice history behind it and turning it into something that could have been made yesterday.

    • Not as long as you dont over heat it, dip it in water as your grinding and you'll be fine. But also with axes since they're so thick you can grind constantly with light passes and be fine. Of course yeah if you get it over 400° F then yeah you can ruin the temper.
