I'm a classical conductor who works with opera singers. I agree with you, Kelly is the best singer and musician in the pop world. Especially because of the reasons you stated. All my opera singer friends love her. And her pianist/music director is fantastic, as well.

@@Majid12022I agree. The song is about the most vulnerable and fragile part of oneself, like a feather could just break you and cause a big loss of self. Kelly sounds amazing, though the essence of the song is completely gone.

I think Billie Eilish is an amazing composer and lyricist- in the way Carole King is an amazing composer and lyricist. Both are better at composition and lyrics than vocals.
@@thelastofthemachinesthat’s a false statement, she can sing like this but her style isn’t this way and it doesn’t work for this song. It’s actually more difficult to sing lighter and softer like she does. Billie’s version connects with people more because of it’s vulnerability.
@@MeghanSAmaya Oh sure. And I'm sure Billie can sing like Mariah and Whitney too. I play fhe piano, I myself compose, And believe me, she doesn't have that vocal range. I'm not saying she can't sing. I'm saying she doesn't have the ability to belt out notes soprano style. You can't just say she definitively has this ability because she "prefers" not to use it. Which is fine, neither does Taykor Swift or a lot of other artists. Not everyone can be a Whitney or Mariah or a Pink or even a Kelly Clarkson. Composition and lyrics are equally if not more important sometimes. So can Billie sing? Yes. Can she sing soprano or mezzo soprano? No. Absolutely not.

I doubt that Billie is losing sleep. First song in 25 years to win the Grammy for Song of the year and the Oscar for Best Original Song. Standing Ovation when she sang it live at the Oscars. She's 22 and has nine Grammys and two Oscars. I don't think she's looking over her shoulder much.

@@jdchy6181 Kelly is a wonderful singer. But Billie's use of her most fragile falsetto was a deliberate choice made to evoke Barbie's utter confusion and sadness during the climax of the movie. Kelly was not singing to serve a film scene. She could let it rip.

Half the songs you THINK are originals are actually COVERS! You’d be surprised how many major #1 hits are like that! And back in the day, every jazz and pop artist did whole albums of other people’s work, and won awards, so you can’t tell me it’s impossible! All I’ve got to say is…GO, KELLY, GO! I've been a Kelly stan since she won American Idol. She was already one of the very best back then, and somehow she just keeps getting better. You can tell she doesn't rest on her laurels, she works her ass off and never stops trying to improve her craft. I love her so much.

@@ulphil08 Well, try imagining that the song had never been created by Billie and Finneas. Kelly would be whistling Dixie in the bathtub. How "Superior" would that be? And Billie was singing it a very particularly deliberate way to serve a very emotional scene in the Barbie movie. Kelly's version would not have worked nearly as well.

Whenever she sings any song, it sounds like she lived the story, wrote the song, and was born to deliver it to the world. Who else possesses this rare gift? O.M.G. I didn't even think of this as a possibility but when I saw it come up on my YT feed I clicked so fast my computer shook! Kelly did NOT disappoint. A completely different emotional take but just as resonant. It reminds of when Tina Turner covered "Missing You" by John Waite. In the original, John was melancholy and understated and when he sang, "I ain't missing you" it was heartbreaking cuz you felt the lie right in his voice. But Tina sang it like an anthem and when she delivered that line, it was a declaration of independence. All this to say- great songs CAN have multiple interpretations, and this is a GREAT song that Kelly completely inhabited.
The best thing about Bille Elish is that she kept it simple and subtle. The best thing about Kelly is her range and improvisation. Both are excellent in their own way.

LOVE HER, she’s amazing whatever she sings but I think the choice Billie explained in some interviews (responding to the critics regarding her vocal skills saying that she sings to quiet and doesn’t have vocal power) on why she sings this song in that certain way really makes sense. It was supposed to be almost an internal dialogue and as much as I love Kelly, Billie’s version is way more effective vocally for me 🖤 I hope people are gonna stop criticizing Billie cause she has a powerful voice, but she makes artistic choices based on the meaning of the song.

The beginning of her singing sounds like what Billie said she could have sang it if she was going for a pop high range in the vanity fair interview.. but she went an alternate route to give the song more sadness.
