Gym Leaders are some of the most important and recognizable characters in the Pokemon franchise. I recently completed a series on the channel where I covered an interesting fact about every single Pokemon, so I figured I would do the same for the human characters as well! The Gym Leaders have a lot of interesting trivia to offer, so I hope you enjoy the video!

are you telling me that Roxie's dad, Pop Rock, the father of a musician, is referencing a candy and not... not the pop rock genre of music.... sure why not
Yes. Because his daughter is also themed around something you eat.

Nessa uses a male drednaw that can only dynamax, her female one can gigantamax, it does not change gender (spelt drednaw wrong)
yeah it was always quite obvious to me that she has 2 drednaw
They mention at some point all the gym leaders use weaker pokemon than their main team so they don't completely overwhelm challengers making it impossible for anyone to progress.
@@melonman6522 that's how it works in other regions too, every gym leader technically doesn't have a set order in which they have to be fought therefore they all usually have teams specialized for fighting weak and strong trainers, for example while Flannery's team consists of a torkoal, numel, and possibly a slugma, for fighting a trainer with 8 badges she would probably have a camerupt, a higher level torkoal, maybe a ninetales, ext. (well this kind of stuff is not seen in the games but it is hinted and technically shown in the anime and mangas)
@@magolor152 That's correct, but it's kinda hinted at in the games too (at least the ones where you can rematch the leaders). They all have much stronger teams when fighting a champion-status trainer, as opposed to the weaker ones in the first time you battle them. It could be that they just trained a lot since your battle, but it makes more sense that they have specific teams based on the number of badges their opponent have.
As a friendly note, you spelled Drednaw wrong. But you were close
Allister's explanation could be perfectly explained by Shrek. "People are like Onions. They have layers."
Get out of my swamp

Oof I was just about to make this joke
The reason why Erika's Kimono was crossed right over left in the original concept art was that she was originally going to be the Ghost-Type Gym Leader of Lavender Town until they decided not to do that, this also make the floating Pokéball in her sprite make more sense too
And the way her eyes look. In her RGB art Erika looks like she's asleep. Her pose even looks like she's leaning on something.
@@hydriadus Hmm... that's a possible explanation, not sure it's the RIGHt one though. you'd think a grass trainer wouldn't inhale the sleep powder unless they wanted to... especially since the other trainers under her don't seem to share that.
@@svlsrv0010 oh that's a lot of layers of retcons to do.... ooooh boy... :D layer 1: Erika probably got swapped to Grass from Ghost since they just didn't have enough Ghosts. So... what would her team be? Pokémon that aren't in gen1 at all? Layer2: what would a ghost version of Erika's story be? I suspect "perfume" thing could be more akin to incense? Less one with nature, more one with the spirit world? Layer3: Erika doesn't interact much with other Gymleaders in the anime so... not a lot there. But it'd be interesting if Ash met Erika... then did the Gengar thing since... He'd be quite familiar with Gengars by then.

Adding on to Piers' fact, he's also the only evil team leader to not have evil intentions in the series. He just wants his sister Marnie to take over the gym for him. Fun video regardless!!!!!!
@Straw Berry Game Freak simply pulled a Gen 7 in my opinion. When it looked like Team Skull was the evil team, but it was actually the Aether Foundation. Not saying Team Skull was morally good, but Team Yell is kinda like Skull in a way.
@Straw Berry Ok. I get that.
While it's true they aren't evil in the traditional sense (commiting crimes and the like), I have seen some people suggest that they may be a "statement", for lack of a better term, on Toxic Fanbases and such, and most people see Toxic Fanbases as bad, or evil if you will, so an argument could be made that they are evil in that sense.

"69 Facts About EVERY Gym Leader" *n i c e*
The Nessa fact can be simply put down to her having two Drednaws as the one she uses for the champion battles can Gigantaxmax but her gym version can only use the regular Dynamax.
yeah i was about to say that. Her male drednaw can't dynamax but her female one can. So presumably she just has two drednaw.
@@absoluteatrocity4019 exactly what I was thinking
@Isaac Shin How'd that happen, normally the water gym battle is a Dynamax as the fire gym is supposed to be the first Gigantamax battle you have.
@Isaac Shin you're talking about her level 24 male drednaw during the second gym battle

17:16 ok... I'm gonna point this out now because I have a huge theory about it and I really think it weighs on this. In the Sun and Moon games when Hau mentions that his dad got a job far away from Alola, many people seem to try to make it seem like he'd only stick to fighting type Pokemon because of his relation to Hala, but Here we can see that Marlon Looks like Hau and even has the same carefree attitude that makes Him seem like He could be Hau's dad. A really cool thing about Gordie and Melony that I found out about: Even though they specialize in different types, their team's typings are actually not so different. During their gym battles, both of them use a single typed, a fire type, a water type, and a bug type Pokémon. Also, both of their ace's other type is strong against each other's specialized type. I always find this a nice touch, wonder if this is intentional.

Gotta love how when Norman watches TV in the anime, he lets his Slaking watch too.
I heard once that Erika was supposed to be a Ghost Gym Leader at one point, so the kimono being crossed the wrong way may have been left over from that idea.
It also explains her pose. She is posed almost like she propped up on something behind her in R/G/B. Also why is her facial expression like that of someone asleep... or yeah? Also, if you look closely her pokeball is LEVITATING in the battle art. That doesn't make sense for a gardener. It's kinda explained that she likes the zen peaceful sort of gardening, but even then... not that much of an explanation. Her backstory doesn't involve psychic powers. The kimono being folded the wrong way would make PERFECT sense if she was intended to be a GHOST trainer.... and would also explain the levitating Pokeball and why she's seemingly unconscious.
2:24 Cheren in nuvema town? He becomes a gym leader? Gary in pallet town? He becomes a gym leader? There are no gym leaders that in the gym battle have none though
Nessa’s dredknaw doesn’t change gender it’s two completely different dredknaws as you can tell from the change in gender and the second is a g max
This video had me shook though. I deadass thought Gordie was MARRIED to Melony. I guess that explains Gordie's embarrassed/angry facial expression in Melony's rare league card.

Raihan is the first gym leader who's typing hardly resembles the type he claims. In the gym he has 2 dragon types, 2 ground types, 1 rock, and one steel. Why not be a rock/ground gym leader at that point?
I just hope that Piers won’t be the last Dark Type Gym Leader we get, he’s so cool and I want this type to get more rep in the gyms, I mean Piers being in charge of the ‘evil’ team was really doing it for a very sweet and loving standpoint, making sure his little sister is cheered on throughout her journey to becoming champion, and that’s just so adorable. And that’s the way GameFreak should approach Dark Type Gym Leaders, they’re not evil because they’re using the evil type, they like the aesthetic and are actually real sweethearts once you meet them(despite how punk Piers is, I can’t get over how gosh darn adorable he is with his sister). So that way no one could complain that GameFreak is pushing some evil agenda towards young gamers
They’re mostly used for the Elite Four so I don’t see why it’s so important.
I don’t like that dark type are called evil type. Dark type can mischievous, prankster or jokester but they don’t have to be evil.
@@pn2294 Yeah, the first League trainer with a dark team was in G/S/C E4. "I'm not evil, just an edgelord." hahaahah
Did anyone notice how popular the fighting type is? There's been a Pokémon League Fighting type specialist for every gen. Kanto-Bruno Johto-Chuck Hoenn-Brawly Sinnoh-Maylene Unova-Marshal Kalos- Korrina Alola- Hala Galar (can be the exception if you played Shield)- Bea I'm not sure if any other types are in every game like Fighting.
While they may not all be League members/Gym Leaders Psychic also has some sort of type specialist in each game Kanto- Sabrina Johto- Will Hoenn- Tate and Liza Sinnoh- Lucian Unova- Caitlin Kalos- Olympia Alola- Dexio (while he isn't a Gym Leader/League Member, he does seem to be meant to be the Psychic Specialist for the region) Galar- Bede (until he becomes a Fairy Specialist) and once the DLC comes out it'll be Avery. I don't think it could work for any other types because of how the typings are set up between games and such, Johto is mainly the one that screws it up as as far as I'm aware the only way all types are represented there are through the Kanto Gym Leaders. Besides that though I think Water is the next closest with 7 (there could be more though) as it would be: Kanto- Misty Johto- no one (unless you want to count Misty) Hoenn- Wallace/Juan Sinnoh- Crasher Wake Unova- Cress Kalos- Siebold Alola- Lana Galar- Nessa
Ghost is almost there but Kalos ruins it Gen 1-Agatha Gen 2-Morty Gen 3-Phoebe Gen 4-Fantina Gen 5-Shauntal Gen 6-Nobody Gen 7-Acerola Gen 8-(in shield)Allister Ice comes really close too, but this time, Alola ruins it Gen 1-Lorelei Gen 2-Pryce Gen 3-Glacia Gen 4-Candice Gen 5-Brycen Gen 6-Wulfric Gen 7-Nobody Gen 8-(in shield)Melony So, if you include Kanto in Gen 2, then Water appears in every game Gen 1-Misty Gen 2-(including Kanto)Misty Gen 3-Wallace/Juan Gen 4-Crasher Wake Gen 5-Marlon Gen 6-Siebold Gen 7-Lana Gen 8- Nessa Following the same rules, Fire appears in every game Gen 1-Blaine Gen 2-(including Kanto)Blaine Gen 3-Flannery Gen 4-Flint Gen 5-Chili Gen 6-Malva Gen 7-Kiawe Gen 8-Kabu But if you don't include Kanto for gen 2, then Fighting really is the only type that appears across every generation of pokemon
@@rykochey2297 while she isn't a Gym Leader/League Member Sina appears to be meant to be the Alola Ice type specialist.
Well, if that stands to be true, then Ice is the only other typing in all games. Sorry I didn't mention her, I made all of this based off of memory
When it comes to a Alola's psychic-type specialist I always consider faba to be him as you see him more in the actual plot of the game
In the manga it shows a picture of the original artwork of Blaine but he says it’s a disguise
Very epic moment by the manga
Best part of manga
4:25 That makes sense. He certainly has a lot of Flying-Type trainers in his guild. (By which I mean, the _people_ are Flying-Type.)
Random thought: Why are the Japanese names of many SwSh gym leaders named after plants? Milo: Yarrow Nessa: Cupid's dart (It's a flower) Kabu: Turnip Bea: Kidney Bean Allister: Onion Opal: Populus (Another flower) Bede: Beet (Ima put Bede here hope you don't mind) Gordie: Oriental Melon Melony: Melon Piers: Temple Juniper Marnie: Rosemary Raihan: Laburnum (Yet another flower) Leon: Dandelion (Why?) Hop: Hops (Puting Hop here just cuz)
A lot of Japanse names are plant based. Not just Pokémon. Just look at Dragon Ball, all saiyan names are vegetables or vegetable related. Kakarot: carrot Vegeta: vegetable Broly: broccoli As examples.

'Skyla' is apparently also the name of a brand of IUD, which, "is a little, t-shaped piece of plastic inserted into the uterus to provide birth control." This makes the sentence, "Skyla using a Skyla" grammatically correct, and terrible to picture. Oh yeah, and recently I found something interesting. Nessa's name may be a reference to The Silmarillion by J. R. R. Tolkien. In the book, one of the Valar (Basically Middle Earth's gods) is also named Nessa.
