    • Raven Matthews I assume they mean sick like a life threatening sickness that’s not visible to the eyes at first glance. Like when you have cancer but have hair.. people think saying “you don’t look sick” is a complement or they’ll say it implying you’re lying. It doesn’t really help as a compliment because at the end of the day you are sick and you are struggling so looking presentable to fit social standards is not a priority compared to not dying tomorrow. Having an inoperable tumor or diabetes or an autoimmune disease might not have you looking sick and that fact being brought up doesn’t feel great when you know you’re truly suffering day to day.

  • My parents were deaf and it was always interesting to see people's reaction when they would communicate. My mother read lips and seldom used sign, whereas my father could not read lips and relied solely on sign. My mother's sister was also deaf (my aunt), and she read lips and never used sign. My mother could speak clearly and almost everyone just thought she was a foreigner speaking. My father and my aunt could not pronounce words correctly and it was obvious that they were deaf. One of many topics for the deaf community that I never really see anyone discuss, is the manner in which people sign. Growing up I would notice deaf people from New York would sign in a manner I would call hard and forceful, and deaf people from California always seemed to have a laid back, easy going manner of signing. A product of their environment I guess.

    • That is so cool! I never thought about how people would have regionally based 'signed accents' so to speak. It makes perfect sense in hindsight, like of course they would, but I also find it pretty cool that they seem to kind of match up to spoken accents as well

    • Definitely, everyone shows expressions. I feel it’s important to consider, when it’s someone’s lifestyle, I believe certain people would be very active in their main outlet to communicate respectively. So New Yorkers in example, definitely in due to their environment, are more in demand of self-expressing themselves. It’s not easy (as mentioned in the video: there are times with cons), so it’s simply different styles and different personalities to expressions because of what matters to each individual signer, I find. ❤ It’s beautiful to recognize though! Great feedback from your behalf.

    • Same except I was deaf until age 3 and my Autism was assumed to be a result of my delayed language development, did extensive speech and behavioral therapy til 3rd grade when I was taken out of special ed and put into a regular class where I struggled to maintain a 2.5gpa, wasn't diagnosed till age 18 because I was too "well behaved" in class and wasn't "disruptive" enough, was told that I didn't study hard enough and was just lazy with social anxiety. It's hard having an invisible nuerogical disability especially when your sex has been conditioned by birth to behave and never act out nor make a scene unlike boys who can be boys and wreak havoc. So many girls with disabilities go undiagnosed into womanhood believing it's all their fault and constantly feeling ashamed and useless as they put on a face and try their very best to mimic normalcy.

    • I'm autistic and keep getting told "oh you don't seem autistic" by people who don't have experience with the full spectrum of autism and "yeah, I could tell" by people who do. And sometimes people assuming I must have had really helpful therapy, when in reality the only autism therapy I've ever had was a couple weeks with a program that drove me into such a severe combination meltdown/PTSD flashback that I had to call a suicide hotline to resist the urge to cause serious harm to myself. So, no, autism therapy has not been helpful to me, and I'm actually really glad I was diagnosed late.

Because of his mental illness, he heard voices. I always wondered how that worked. He couldn’t hear anything but the loudest of noise ( the smoke alarm in his room was set to lights & vibrating, plus extremely loud siren to accommodate for his deafness) but he would describe the voices in his head to be almost whispering. I know he wasn’t “hearing “ with his ears, but his schizophrenic brain. I always thought it was interesting

She had no language at all, so our entire family learned together. We kept a sign language book on the kitchen table. We all wore it out! I love sign language because it is a beautiful language that adds nuances that words alone cannot capture.

  • I am hard of hearing and was bullied constantly through school because people didn’t believe me even though my class knew I had two operations on my ears and went for regular hospital appointments. Despite this every year I moved to a new form teacher the teacher would be completely unaware of my hearing issues because the school never told them and any new students would immediately assume I was faking. Like you I am not sure why I would do this. I didn’t get a hearing aid until I was 21 and so spent my entire life hard of hearing and can’t get used to the loudness of the world. I really do need to get an appointment for a hearing check because my hearing is definitely getting worse. Boo. On top of this I have fibromyalgia and ME which obviously I am faking because “you don’t look disabled” like we are all created from one disabled person mould. So at 35, I now flatly tell people they are being rude as I have zero fucks left for ignorance. I do love your videos because you explain deafness in such a lovely and understandable way. Despite this being filmed aaaages ago I assume people still say the same daft things.

    • I've got myopia (nearsightedness) and can relate to sensory aides being overwhelming, because in childhood I kept losing my glasses, my parents had trouble affording new glasses and my prescription kept changing, so I spent large chunks of my childhood with everything looking blurry, and it was always a shock when I'd get new glasses. I'd end up staring at my hands a lot because they looked "wrong" to me because they were smaller and less blurry than I was used to. I've been told as an adult that my nearsightedness is so severe I'm at risk for retinal detachment, and without my glasses I'd be considered visually impaired.

I find this fascinating learning how people who have disabilities learn to navigate their world. I once worked with a blind man and I was forever asking him questions as I was so incredibly curious. I am very thankful there are people like you and him who are willing to communicate with me to help my understanding. (I was a teenager and very naive. Asking questions and having it positively responded to has been wonderful. Please don't stop.) Also, for the millionth time you do have a very lovely speaking voice that is so pleasant to the ear. • I was randomly recommended this video. You're awesome and you have a great sense of humor. I think the most impressive thing about your clarity of speech is not just that it is clear- but that you have such a great feel for inflections and voice volume. Even with your explanation I can't wrap my mind around how you do it. As someone who is studious about musical arts I can't imagine losing my hearing. It's one thing to train your ears to train your voice, it's another thing to train your *muscles* to train your voice. I think only the greatest of vocalists could have the control over the very muscles in their throat as you do. I didn't even know it was possible. Is it insensitive to say 'Thank you for making your voice heard'? Thank you for making the world a little less ignorant.

I can see how people mistake her for hearing. It’s the first time I saw someone deaf who speaks that clearly. Usually you can tell when someone is deaf. They have a unique way of speaking.
