  • 5 years later and this video is still helpful. Out of all the must have features in a camera, what's most usable and important to me is back-button focus. I'm seriously considering this camera but it had to have this feature. Half-press shutter for focus is for the birds. Thank you.

  • Just a minor FYI - It's called "back button focusing." Back focusing is when your camera and lens are focusing behind where the focus point is. Front focusing is when they focus ahead of where the focus point is.

Can you tell me the simplest and quickest way to get from single shot mode to burst mode on my RX10 M3 - I'm about to buy the M4 so I imagine it'll be the same. I do a lot of bird photography and often I want to go from single to burst quickly. I used to have a Lumix FZ1000 which had a dial on the top needing one quick move between single and burst.

    • Yes, that is correct. The higher end camera bodies like the A99 II, A77 II, and RX10 IV have the manual switch... I'm sure the A7 series cameras will have it eventually, but Sony is holding back those features for future models I'm thinking ;)

  • Hey Jay. You've got some of the most informative KZhead videos on this camera yet. You mention doing a segment on the RX10IV's video performance soon. When you do can you please address: - video quality / focus speed throughout the zoom range? - 4k/30 vs 1080/60 video quality, specifically with fast moving subjects? - OSS difference between 4k and 1080? I know those are specific requests, but it would help tremendously!

    @markbrandt5579@markbrandt55796 жыл бұрын
    • Hi Mark and thank you for the kind comments!! I can certainly do some high speed AF testing in video mode for you, but it will have to be cars on the highway coming towards me and things like. Will that type of footage/ testing work for you? Stabilization wise I can tell you the 4k is not near as good as the 1080p, due to the active stabilization not being available in 4k. I took some footage already an did zoom tests in both 4k and 1080/24p, and the difference was very noticeable. 4k clearly looks better in detail, but the stabilization was mostly if not all optical. I was using a ball head on my tri-pod and it was still very noticeable. I did not shoot in 1080/60p though. Do you use that 60p footage at 60p for the output, or do you selectively slow the footage down to 30p for effect? I'm just wondering how you would like to see it here on youtube? 30p, 60p, or 24p. I usually shoot in 24p unless I want some slow motion effect... I can see how the 60p would be much better for the high speed motion captures though, so I'm thinking you plan to output in 60p? For more info, you can also hear the powerzoom motor on the lens in the video footage as well, if that matters to you. I was able to track geese with ease, but they were far from high speed subjects!! If this type of testing will work for you, please let me know, and then just give me a few days to get the footage and put it up here on my channel... I'm sure may others would like to see this testing as well, so I really appreciate the detailed request!! Jay

    • Jay SonyAlphaLab Wow! Thanks for the help. I mention 1080/60 because that's been the best output quality I've used previously for sports, primarily soccer. I tend to shoot an equal mix of close in shoots and larger FOV field coverage. The full field video shots are relatively easy for most cameras. On the other hand, close in video of fast moving sports is significantly more difficult. Anything you demonstrate would be incredibly helpful. Thank you!

  • Dude awesome explanation thanks a ton. It is my first time viewing your video. Would you happen to have any videos explain on the different situations would use the different focus options. I just don't make any sense out of all the options for example Lock-on AF center, Lock-onAF Flexible SpotS vs. Lock-on Expand Flexible Spot. I mean can i just simply touch screen my focus point?

    @Smartbox-iw1fm@Smartbox-iw1fm5 жыл бұрын
    • Hello and thanks!! Yes you can just touch the screen to lock the focus on that spot. Lock-on AF center is just keeps the focus point in the center area, but will also lock on your subject. Locke-On flexible spot does the same thing, except you can move the focus point around the entire screen. Expand flexible is the same as flexible, except it can grow in size a little which is better in most situations I would say. You really need to play with them to get the hang of then and to see the advantages over one another depending on the situation. I would recommend starting with lock-on AF expand flexible for moving subjects that you want to track.

  • Hi there, thanks for the video. I was hoping to find something similar to what I have on my A99ii which is strangely just called "Focus Standard" on there. When I assign this Focus Standard to a button it allows me to have full wide focusing on which is great 80% of the time but then when I want to lock onto something specific that the camera isn't doing for me on it's own (eg the wrong person's face or a bird in a busy bush etc) I can hold this button and it activated the very center focusing square and then locks that until I let go of it. A super useful focusing tool to have. Any idea if this camera has it / has similar and where to find it? Thanks for your time.

One thing that still confusing to me is to focus two objects, e.g. two birds (in your scene, those two metal bars) that position at different depth. I can put focus on only one each, not both at the same time. Could you please tell me the right settings? Thanks

    @abouzarazarafza4381@abouzarazarafza43812 жыл бұрын
    • You should work with your depth of field. In case one of the two is not sharp, set de the camera in A shooting mode (aperture preference) and select a wider aperture. For example, 4.0 instead of 8. This will increase your depth of field.

      @CNFontijn@CNFontijn2 жыл бұрын
    • @@CNFontijn I'm fairly new to photography, but is that not backward? A lower F number like 4.0 gives you more light but less depth of field. A higher F number, 8.0, gives you less light coming in but more depth of field. Which is what the poster is going for. So assuming the multiple focus points are within a wide depth of field you'd need to increase it to a higher F number, and probably get more light elsewhere (ISO or shutter speed).

  • Hi Jason. I’m thinking of swapping my Canon DSLR kit for the RX10M4. My default focussing is to use the centre focus spot and the Canon resets the centre spot on pressing the OK button with no hassle. I had an Olympus setup a few years ago which drove me to distraction by continually moving the focus spot when my nose touched the viewing screen and there was no way I could find to easily and quickly reset the centre focus. My question, will I risk my nose moving the focus spot if my nose touches the screen when I use the viewfinder?! My nose is not unusually large, quite average really! Great videos! Thanks!

    @Howlin23@Howlin233 жыл бұрын
    • That is a tuff call honestly. If the animal is in the open with no trees between the camera and the animal, then you can go for center focus area and auto focus. The camera will automatically use AF-C mode when recording video unless you have it set to manual focus. If there are trees and branches between you and the animal, then I would utilize manual focus to avoid the auto focus from changing when panning left to right for example.

  • I just bought the Sony RX10 IV and need to quickly get it set up to shoot outdoor soccer in late afternoon sunlight, soon. I need to shoot use either 1/800 or 1/1000 second shutter speed to stop action with the 600 mm lens; facial recognition to catch the ball handler and guarding player in focus; my focal length will vary depending upon where the players go; back camera focusing to save battery life and have better control. I would like the camera to show me the initial ISO setting to get the "ideal" exposure. If I see I am getting too much noise in my images at that ISO, I can lower the ISO one F stop to reduce the noise and make the correction by editing my best images after the game. Do you recommend I initially set up the camera on Shutter priority at first until I get the camera's preference for ISO for an ideal exposure? Then lower the ISO one stop to lesson the noise. Then make the exposure correction when I edit after the game using Photoshop and Exposure 5? Or just set the camera on Shutter priority and let it set the ISO where it needs to be?

    • Hi Don, I would just use shutter priority mode and Auto ISO for now and then see how it goes. You an also use exposure compensation which will lower the ISO and slightly underexpose the images as well if you want. In addition you can play with the shutter speed depending on the shot as well. Fast action will clearly need to be 1/400sec minimum, but a lot of other shots you should be able to get away with slower shutter speeds.

Maybe.....once you think on it, and learn why, you’ll get the point. Most photographers don’t do anything that’s “cool” especially with something as arcane as back button focusing, they do back button focusing because it’s useful like when focusing and recomposing. Don’t know how using back button focusing makes anyone cool, or do it to be cool. Sheesh.

You can go into the custom settings and assign Eye-AF to any custom button you desire, but in order to use it, it must be assigned to something. MENU → (Camera Settings2) → [Custom Key(Shoot.)] → desired key, then assign the [Eye AF] function to the key. - Point the camera at a person's face, and press the button to which you have assigned the [Eye AF] function. - Press the shutter button while pressing the button. • Hi Jay! Thanks for your great video. I'm trying to film a flying owl and keep it in focus. I've tried before and I couldn't get it right. *and I have one final opportunity to film an owl tomorrow. Any idea what would be the best settings for me to use? I had tried last time to do 120 fps, but my photographer friend said, in order to keep it in focus, I'd be better off doing 60 fps. Should I use setting C and do the Lock on Expand Flexible spot? Or does that only work for photos, not video? Thanks! Here's my owl video and footage so far, you can see the flying owls are blurry. kzhead.info/sun/a5ahp7acmXawqXk/bejne.html

    • Hello and thanks for the comments/ question! I checked out your owl video and really nice work you are doing with the owls!! As far as capturing in flight? That is extremely difficult to do. In the case of in the coup, I would just set the camera up on a tri-pod and take a wide angle view on the matter. It looks like your shutter speed not fast enough to capture the motion as fast as ideal also.. I agree with your friend, 60p is a better option for tracking. Also, your shutter speed needs to be at least 1/60sec, but I would go for 1/120sec in this case if possible. 2 x 1/60sec... AF-C and flexible spot is usually the way to go for this type of thing, but tracking that owl in such close quarters is going to be next to impossible. If you want to capture the bird in flight, I would try to have the Owl on something not moving. Then lock on to the bird and try to initiate flight while tracking. I could see this taking 10 tries or more to actually nail though, based on the speed of the bird and close quarters. I really hope that helps and please let me know how you make out ;)

      @Jason_Hermann@Jason_Hermann6 жыл бұрын
    • Thanks Jay! This sounds good. I was also going to try to set up a shot or two where I set the camera right behind where the owl will land - and lock the focus on that point/branch, and then hopefully capture the owl in focus at the end of its flight. For adjusting the shutter speed - do I go through the movie dial, then shutter priority? How then do I adjust the shutter speed to 1/120? I'm not finding that setting - do I need to be on a different setting? (sorry, I'm pretty new with this camera, and good cameras in general). *side note: today the owl wouldn't fly at all. :( but I might take a 3 hr trip to another bird sanctuary to see if I can get it to work. Thanks!

      @MaddenScience@MaddenScience6 жыл бұрын
    • That focusing on the landing idea you have is a great one and I would totally try that! Make take a while to nail it, but well worth the effort I would say. 120P would also be worth trying for that I'm thinking, since you are fixing the focus to the landing area. Movie mode & then shutter priority mode via the Function menu, Then 1/125sec shutter speed using Auto ISO should do the trick if filming gin 1080/60p. Or you can use 1/60sec as well if the lighting is low to help keep the ISO as low as possible. Best of luck!

If you are new to this - or the M3, you would be hard pushed to know how the expandable spot modes can be used. Telling you what they can do just leaves you frustrated - and moving spots without explaining what you are doing prepares you for abandoning the info. Obviosly knowledgable, but not so good at teaching.
