Had alot of vests in my reenacting days. 1750s to 1900s. In the old days it was usually considered naked if you didn't wear one. My great grandfather (who passed in 1960 at age 88) was like that. He was a railroader in those old days. He and I were close. I remember him always wearing his 3 piece blue railroad suit. Plus his gold pocket watch he got when he retired in 1938. I have it now.

When my great great grandfather passed in 1900 the contents of his vest pockets included a pocket watch, 3 silver dollars, 6 45. caliber pistol rounds, his rosary, a pencil, and his Grand Army of the Republic identification card. It was all passed down through the family and I have it now.

Interestingly here in Britain Penguin Books was set up in 1935 selling inexpensive jacket pocket sized paperback books sold through Woolworths. These high-quality fiction and non-fiction books were often carried in the jacket pocket and could be read by people taking the train to work. As it was Woolworths they were sold for sixpence, your dime.

I never had a vest, but back in my 20’s I always had dice, a bottle opener and a lighter in the pockets of my jacket. All relating to my boozing years.

Thanks again Santee & Co. When I was in the navy I carried a few bare minimum items in the pockets of my dungaree pants and chambray shirt in case I had to abandon ship . I always had a sturdy buck knife , a small hone , a lighter , a GI issue ink pen , and my wallet . My wallet contained my navy ID and some US paper currency because everyone recognizes their value and I wouldn"t find myself broke in a foreign land . The GI issue ink pen was useful to write on human skin , as paper is useless in salt water . One item we were trained to keep when abandoning ship was our white Dixie Cup sailor hat . We were to fold the brim down to shade our head , it could be used as a bucket to bail sea water out of of our survival boat and catch any rain water that may fall .

I myself wear a Wyoming Traders concealed carry vest most of the time. Besides my P229 I have a pocket watch, lip balm, a couple of coins from the 1890's, spare key to the church, and a backup mag , and of course a shooter bottle of Jim Beam Apple 🥃🥃

I dearly appreciate the fine work this group consistently provides illustrating an era lost in mythology and movie fantasies. This episode is particularly relevant due to the resurgence of westerns on TV and movies. I appreciate the Ghostriders because they aren't seduced by Hollyweird. I no longer chuckle at the mandated cutely coiffued upswept perfectly clean felt cowboy hats, teased male model eyebrows, carefully manicured facial hair and tailored "cowboy" clothes. The Ghostriders keep genuine. The frontier wasn't a pretty experience. The ranchers I have met were functional. Most wear billed caps instead of expensive felt hats in daily work. More than a little sweat and stink is normal. Western work still is not glamorous. I do like vests and I hope this episode has a large influence.

Thank ya for another informative look into the ol west brother. I love my trail vests mostly so I can keep my pocket watch on me. My fob is the Masonic symbol in memory of the many generations of my family before me who were members, even before coming to America. We can always count on you for bringing the simpler things we take for granted, like a simple vest, into the limelight,

Never had a vest. But always had a compass, knife, and a Zippo in a pocket somewhere. Vests always seem so confining.
I used to think so, but now I wear them 5 days a week and they aren't at all confining.

I loved my vests. I had two different ones for my living history. One was Confederate military, and one was civilian. Wore one or the other when in uniform. I carried a pocket watch and a box of Lucifers. I would sometimes keep a nipple pick and my rifled musket or revolver wrench/screwdriver combination. A spare can of pistol caps might be kept as well. I still wear a vest with my modern shirt and jeans on occasion. It is a great accessory, even for modern times.

The gun that killed Billy the kid, holding Kurt Russel’s Buntline and even seeing all the photos (The snippet of John Wesley Hardin was something I remembered from your gun tricks video!) was amazing. They had so much to display, and all the saddles and leather were kept in great condition.
I loved this. I collect a few pocket watches ofthe mid to late Victorian era and they are wonders. Great piece of historical clothing i never gave much thought to. Thanks.

I love your videos. I have a story and a comment. I am 70 years old My first watch was given to me by My Grandpa when I was 6. It was a 6-sided pocket watch commonly called a boys' watch. Needless to say, I dropped it and it never ran again, but I still have it. Through the years I noticed a pocket watch in my grandpa's dresser. I asked if I could have it. He said, "No, I want to hang on to it a while longer". I must have asked for that pocket watch 4 times and one day when I was 10 my grandpa died. Years passed and I am now 16. My Grandma did not have much money and we were always told not to accept things from her. That Christmas she gave me a box. I don't remember if my brother and sisters got anything from her. I could not accept it but Grandma insisted. My mother said it was ok. I opened that box and in it was that pocket watch I had asked for so many times. My Grandpa before he died told my Grandma to give it to me when I turned 16. I treasured that watch. It was a Hamilton made in 1894 and 19 jewels. Unfortunately, I dropped that one as well. My oldest pocket watch is a Waltham made in 1859. I do not own a wrist watch and prefer to wind up my watches. Youngsters are amazed when they find out there are no batteries to make my watches work. Now for my comment; Always push the button to close your case otherwise the snap will wear away the case. On my Waltham is a case in point no pun intended, well maybe a little.
Love the story!! Yep, I do push the button on my case. Had a little boy last week snapping it open and closed repeatedly and I had to shoot him. Seriously, that watch is a cheapo Chinese one that we sell at Old Tucson. I used it as a training moment for the lad. It works without me having to remember to wind it, which is very useful.
Reminds me a lot of Doc Adams on Gunsmoke. He looked at that watch quite a bit.

In terms of waistcoats that have pockets and button closures go, I have a few. I recently picked up the cattle baron vest from Schaefer Outfitters. However, my favorite is the filson Mackinaw vest since it has a hand warmer pocket. I prefer waistcoats with the back of the waistcoat matching the front, these kinds of waistcoats look better without a jacket IMO. Besides my airpods, loose change, and recepits, I don't keep much else in there but an extra pocket is always handy.

Don’t know about the old days but in today’s world the cell phone made me add vests to my wardrobe. My wallet, credit cards, coin purse, glasses, keys, pen, notebook, and flashlight all now have a home as well. The access convenience while sitting down in a restaurant or while going through a drive thru makes this carry option preferable over pants pockets plus I find it much more comfortable.🇨🇦

I had 3 whiskey flasks (don't judge me.) and a 1851 pocket revolver, In mine.
No judgement here. Flasks don't hold enough, IMHO...so the more the merrier!
you know ive never owned a vest but pocket watches are something that i love and its mind boggling to me that many people these days dont know that the tiny square pocket on your jeans is for a pocket watch works good for zippo lighter too it also infurites me that i cant find a digital pocket watch anywhere

As a kid, I remember my grandfather always wearing a vest. He carried a pocket watch and his small tobacco pouch. He was one of those old cowboys that could roll a cigarette one handed, on horseback. I kept trying to get him to teach me, but he would just belly laugh and say ... "not yet, kid". Hahaha.

Vests are classic for the pockets. I saw a fellow a few years ago in a Wah Maker vest and jeans. I said, "Nice 19th century vest." He said, "Huh? Is it? I bought it at a swap meet for the pockets."
My (alas now deceased) fashion historian friend, Anthony "Spats" Martin once told me that a "fob" was attached to a watch in a pocket and the decorative piece on a chain was called a "charm". Doesn't REALLY matter, I suppose...
I just looked that up on a few different sites to get us an answer, Pico. Apparently, it originally meant the chain, then the watch and the charm (or item) was included in the definition.

I like to use the K.I.S.S. method with my kit. I usually am portraying just an average generic character. I keep my watch in my top left pocket. it makes it easier to look at. it's kind of a hold over from Civil War reenacting making the lower pockets a little harder to accuse with the belt over everything. When doing old west, I'll keep things needed for that week end in the lower pockets.

So much very interestingly informative and awsome video, i really liked and enjoyed it and i learned a lot about vest pockets from the old west and the old west frontier. Great job, well done and keep up the great work, I once again got a lot of inspiration for my old west, zelda, and retro/ retrofuturism inspiration video games mythology mythos project titled Mysteriarch Mythos: Pixel Pioneers and the polygon realms. I wrote a ton more short lore stories this week and today so far for my mythos project. Im definitely going to be adding vests with pockets to my mythos world. Right now I'm working on writing a scene that takes place in a cavern known as The Utan Caves on the old west frontier island called Tabbantha Isle. In that scene, a fronted adventurer by the name of Luriilyn Moon ( Loa Moon) had just entered the caverns with the Mayor of the frontier town called Tarring Township near the Rurencia River,by the name of Reede Dotour. I also added something called Sage-Frontiersmen to my stories and world as well.

Today I've been getting even further story inspiration from videos on sacred geometry, bio geometry, spiritual science, geometry and mathamatics, Computer and video game graphics, history of the 18th and 19th century early cinema slides, and esoteric philosophy as well as early photography and other video game and computer technology and retro devices.
So am I to understand that the hat was the Victorian equivelent of social media. I got something to show off so I will put it on my hat. I love these little tidbits. As much as people say times change, we are all essentially the same. We just have newer and different ways to do the same thing. haha love it.

I usually carry my Great- Grandfather’s gold Hamilton 23 jewel railroad watch. It even has its original gold chain and holed half penny. Why he chose a half penny is anyone’s guess. My Grandfather received the watch from his father on his wedding day. My Grandfather was hit by buckshot when he was having breakfast with a Ranger from The Southwest Cattle Raisers Association. Tom Mosley, the Ranger, was killed, as was my Grandfather’s watch. My Grandmother gave the watch to my Dad, who had a local jeweler repair the watch. The watch works great, but the jeweler didn’t replace the porcelain dial, he just worked the dent out so the porcelain is crazing at the 7 where it was hit. He replaced a plate and a gear. So it reminds me of how lucky my Grandfather was. An ex-con that Tom had arrested and had sent to prison in Huntsville held a strong grudge. He had seen Tom and my Grandfather go into the White House Cafe, and went into Flato’s Hardware Store on main street in Kingsville, and bought a cheap double barrel 12 ga., a box of double-aught buckshot but only took two shells. He walked across the street to the cafe where they were eating walked in and blew Tom’s head off and hitting my Grandfather. Grandpa’s injuries were minor, but my dad was walking in the door when the ex-con shot both barrels, my dad was only 17 at the time. What I’ve written is also listed in a collection about lawmen who were killed in Texas while on duty.

I always wear a black leather vest, I have for over forty years. Somehow people always think I am a biker but I'm not. When they ask me what kind of bike I ride I tell them Schwinn. I carry my phone inside my vest pocket, it fits nicely, and maybe a pair of shades. Other than that, maybe some breath mints because it doesn't matter how dapper you look if your breath peels paint. I think the vest gives off a certain look. It sends a message that I tend to be old fashioned (literally) and carry the values of that independent, self-reliant, cowboy look. Know what I mean?
I do! I asked wardrobe to sew an inside pocket on my new vest to stash my smart phone. It's outline shows in the pants pocket. I like to have access to the camera at all times for my weekly videos.

Keep the videos coming Santee. I found being diabetic and needing various tablets throughout the day etc, I made a smaller bread bag and I’m able to carry my bits and bobs around in that. Most see the bag and it goes with the outfits I wear.

I have two vests, a Frontier Classics brown cotton one I wear more casually and one gray and black Dawson vest which I bought when I was offered it by a shop that didn't have the one I wanted in stock in my size. Good to have for more formal events. I am going to get two more at some point since I have recently bought 4 pairs of high waisted trousers that use suspenders to hold them up and would like to hide the suspenders when wearing them. I have often wondered what people kept in vest pockets besides pocket watches and what was on the other chain of a double chain besides a pocket watch. I have one of my grandfather's pocket watches that I attach to my vests but I am going to get a cheaper pocket watch just to have when I am out as I don't want to be carrying around his old watch. I read somewhere that when glasses had a chain attaching them, people put them in their top vest pocket and attached the chain to the vest so if the glasses fell out of their pocket, they wouldn't drop to the ground and potentially break or get lost.
