My mom used to make these for my brother. We called them Cavalry shirts, and my brother even wore it like John Wayne, 1 or even 2 buttons undone. Mind you, this was in the last 70's... Not 1870's but 1970's. OH, and she even piped them in yellow
Cool!
Great
We had those too Woolworth uses to have them 60s...Tucson
That rocks! My wife and I made pro wrestling gear for many years (tights, trunks, masks, etc). Hardly anyone makes anything anymore. When I was a kid half the women in town (and ALL the teachers in my school) wore clothes they had made themselves out of doubleknit polyester. There was a fabric store called Mr. Yard in our tiny town that was just busy as hell all the time in those days. They even sold novelties and comic books as well as fabric, patterns and scissors.
@@BrutishYetDelightful Wow!
KZhead will die the day people stop making mundane documentaries about things we did not need to know but are glad someone took the time to do anyway
🤠
Maybe another advantage. If you are a sloppy eater, you take off the bib while eating, and then hide the mess you made under the bib when done. And viola!, clean shirt! 😂
Right!!!
Maybe it is the other way around. This way they still had a shirt while their bib was washed. Easier to nwash your bib in the town water trough and not offend the ladies.
Never knew it would be so much fun learning about shirts.
Thank You!
@ArizonaGhostriders No,noThank 😊 😅
Anchor: medival symbol of hope.
An idea!
Krieghoff Luger Pistols had Anchor with dagger superimposed as their logo. Krieg means War, Hoff = Hope. in Germany. dagger represents war, anchor represents hope. also, letter H and K on either side, for Heinrich Krieghoff, NOT Heckler & Koch.
@@davidjacobs8558Interesting. I thought Krieghoff was referring to “war-court” like an armory or warehouse that was solely meant for making arms.
Hebrews 6:19 Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;
Symbol of hope? Fat lot of good that did Billy the Kid. 😮 Wonder if he still had that shirt when Garrett shot him?
Lobster bibs had the ⚓ 😂
yep
The fouled anchor is the emblem Navy CPO. After 20 years in the Navy, I still have no idea of the significance. I seem to remember them telling us in boot camp, but that was nearly 50 years ago. I’m old, I forget stuff, LOL!
Thanks! That still doesn't explain the civilian connection..so it's a mystery
Last time at bat, I hit a fouled ball. What's the opposite of foul? Fair. What's the opposite of fouled? Faired?
@@ArizonaGhostridersMaybe it's like Sam Colt having the 1851 navy engraved as a way of saying thanks? Or chinos?
@@skeletonbuyingpealts7134 That's an idea!
Funny that a fouled anchor, an unseaman thing to let happen would be the symbol of a chief
It’s Santeeday once again, and the word of the week is “Rakish.” 👍🖖
A new favorite!
You're channel is such a treasure! Thank you for all of your hard work!
Much appreciated.
That was great! I have one like what Duke wore in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.
Yeah!
The music, Leaning on the everlasting arms. It took me back to a different time and place. I had almost forgotten how much I miss it.
Awesome!
These have very quickly become my favorite series of videos
Thank You!
Santee, you always add to my knowledge of the old west. As a weapons guy, I have always sort of overlooked the more mundane aspects of the period, such as clothing. Thanks.
You're welcome.
Interesting to know this about a simple shirt design. That part with Billy was fun, stealing the shirt off a dead body, that's our Billy. :3
Great!
Well, you sure solved a mystery for me. Nice to see they're still making them. As a schooner driver, I may have to get one with the anchor-bib.
You may have to get it custom made.
I'd noticed these shirts and wondered about them, thanks! Yes, the unbuttoned button is rakish, but you really need the kerchief like the Duke was wearing to really complete the ensemble,
Could be!
As both an "old westian" who sews, and a volunteer firefighter, I really need to get around to making a red wool bib front shirt. It's criminal that I haven't done so already. Fun fact, the reason firefighters wore them was because the bib prevented sparks and embers from getting inside the shirt.
Yep! Protection all the way, Devin. Now....make that shirt! LOL!
Here we are learning about tthings we didn't know we need to knw. Always enjoyable with my Saturday morning coffee.
Glad you enjoyed it
The Billy the Kid kid looks great. Very authentic. I knew immediately who he was supposed to be portraying.
Awesome! Renee did a great job matching it all up
Now, if I show this to my wife she will MAKE me wear them everyday. It seems I am always slopping something on my chest and have ruined several shirts from the accumulated stains. You could probably even turn the bib part inside out for eating and re-button the clean side out after meals! Ingenious!
It is a great design!
Love it. Best Old West content. You and Mrs. Pew Pew have a beautiful and blessed weekend.
Thanks so much! Have a great one.
I had one made from heavy cotton flannel and it was my favorite shirt. The bib gave an extra layer of cloth that definitely protected against the wind and the cold.
Awesome!
I've always liked those types of shirts on the gentleman of the west. I never knew what they were called . Another great episode thank you so much. 🤠
You're welcome.
Another finest kind tutorial. I Always admired those shirts on movie actors but had no idea what they were. Mucho gracias! Yours is the only western themed channel I Patreonize. Your fancy dancy edits and camera framing really spice up a potentially dull topic. That and your visial style adds to the charm. The norm for channels seem to be voice overs or talking heads. You take your channel to an EI level (Entertaining and Informative). A lot of extra work. I would hope more viewers appreciate the difference and Patreonize. Move 'em out!
Thank you for the encouraging words!
I never even noticed them, as being separate from the shirts underneath!🙃 How you get all of those audio-visual clips, and pics to correlate with the topics, is a feat in itself, Santee... Since Duke Wayne wore 'em, they must've been pretty, dang popular. 🤠👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you, Rhonda. Much appreciated!
Thanks again Santee & Co. You're looking stylish in that shirt . I didn't know about the anchor on some of those shirts , but as a US Navy veteran I like it.
Thank You! Appreciate your service, sir.
I think 'rakeish' is definitely a word that should be bought back into common use again. Thaks Santee 😅👍
No doubt!
One of the longes vids you have produced ! LOVE IT
Glad you enjoy it!
Santee in is bib shirt ! Always Iconic for sure ! Thanks for bringing this up ! Keep up amigo and have a great weekend and keep does buttons tide on your bib!
Thanks!
Hey Marco!!! How's life brother?
@AdaMtheNinja76 Hi AdaM 👋 I'm doing great, I hope good with yours has well amigo, thanks for haskin amigo 😀
02:17. In Christian symbolism, an anchor represents the virtue of Hope. Charity is a flaming heart, and Faith, a cross.
Yep, yep!
The bib front is still a great design, and even incorporated into modern comic book superhero costumes like Captain Marvel (the SHAZAM version) and the Ghost Rider (both the cowboy and flaming skull versions).
Oh yeah, that's right!! Just realized this.
@@ArizonaGhostriders that's okay. Thanks to this video, I know what to call them after, oh, 54 years. Thank YOU.
I saw a catalog cerca 1890s in a museum opened to the bib shirt. It advertised being able to buy one shirt and change bibs for different styles. I had plain color bibs and fancy embroidered bibs.
There ya go! Good find.
I have a few of those! A little tough to get on and off, but I like them! Very cool video Santee!
Yeah, kinda not fun to take off.
Yeah the skeleton made it back!!! Love your mini show Santee!
He shows up from time to time. Mostly when he's not running the camera.

I have two bib shirts. I just called them my John Wayne shirts. Now I know some of their history. Thanks.
You're welcome.
Huh. Should have known Bill Brazelton identified with pirates. 😉
Yeah, he likes 'em.
Another great one! I love the look of those shirts, hopefully they make a comeback!
Me too!
I've always wanted one in blue. As for valiant and wayward Billy's anchor, along with the top hat, I suspect he liked to dude up as much as a cowhand and small time rustler's wages would allow.
Good bet, Greg.
My late wife made me a bib shirt 40+ years ago (red). I still have it.
Wow!
Excellent episode Santee! It is a very cool shirt. With all the information you just showed, I just may need to make one. I have made many shirts over the years, but never a bib front. Y'all have a great weekend Pard! Cheers!
Cool!
In Navy lore an anchor represents stability. I don't know if that interpretation would fit the wild west mythology, so I'll go with it looks cool.
I'm with you. I think it might have been a nod to something naval...but that just doesn't fit his character (especially since he wasn't in the Navy).
South Union mills makes a replica of a bib shirt found on the steamship Arabia and they are gorgeous and well worth looking at. Most of the clothes that I don’t make myself come from south Union mills. They make the most accurate reproductions I’ve found of period clothing unlike from frontier classics, scully, wah maker etc that get the material and patterns all wrong. I highly suggest checking them out they go above and beyond and they truly sell nothing whatsoever that is inaccurate! Hope you are well- your holster and clothes making friend from Maryland !
There are some folks online who make the "Electric Shirt" as well. I would love a repro of them, but can't justify the cost.
When I lived in Cheyenne between 1976 and 1979. My mothers friend was a Taylor in town that did custom shirts. Her name was Lona and her shirts were known as Lona's Originals. During Cheyenne frontier days she set up her booth and sold custom shirts. She would take orders and fill them throughout the year. Her booth normally had hundreds of custom shirts. At the time, her shirts ran 60 to 75 dollars for an off the rack one. And the most expensive I saw was 300.00 for a hand embroidered eagle on the back purchased by Charlie Daniels.
Wow!! That's is pretty neat.
The "Dodge City Cowboy Band?" Interesting!
Oh yes.
Great video Santee, and they learned a new thing on some shirts. That I didn't know we're so popular then.
Right?!
My favorite one is in black. But I have Bib shirts in red, white and also blue denim.👍
Nice!
Another video buttoned up and I thought you covered the subject well Santee. Thank you.
Glad you liked it!
I think anchor design with the rope wrapped around it like that is called a “spoiled anchor”. I think the British Navy use one as their symbol.
Fouled anchor Royal Navy and later US Navy
Maybe that was an idea. The civilian connection is odd, though.
@@ArizonaGhostriders I imagine the manufacturer picked that symbol purely for decorative reasons. There was a fashion for dressing children up in naval uniforms somewhere in around that time but I don’t think that’s got anything to do with it. It was more like ‘we can offer a plain shirt or we can also offer some more fancy duds!’. That’s part of the dark arts of marketing and selling that remains true to this day.
Well now I want one. Thanks for the great video!
Our pleasure!
Good job Santee...I did not know this about the bib shirt .
Great!
I have one in red and one in blue. They are my favorite.
Great!
Thanks for this information! I have a black Longview bib shirt from Frontier Classics. Feels slightly heavy and well made. It was the first old west style shirt I bought. I have seen reproduction red bib shirts that were labelled as fireman's shirt but I wasn't able to find out why they were called fireman's shirts, but I did assume they were worn by firemen back in the day. I never knew about the anchor and the other designs on the bib. Practical and stylish.
Yes, they are stylish.
Very cool, thanks Santee.
You bet
Yup, good Times 💯👍
Thank You!
Very awsomely interestingly informative video, I really liked and enjoyed it, great job and well done, keep up the great work. I learned alot about frontier bib front shirts from the old west and got a lot of inspiration for my Retro, videogames, computer and old west frontier inspired myths-archive franchise project Mysteriarch Mythos: Pixel Pioneers and the polygon realms. I already finished the first draft of story #1 of my Mythos project and are now working on writing story #2 and I wrote a couple games for my stories too, that are called Mharzoh VideoLand Ventures 7400 and TetraForce-XelQuest Ventures 7400, that were developed by the company Katori VideoDistributions games Inc back in the year 1993 and released in 1996. I'm definitely going to add bib front shirts to my stories and world, alongside other clothing from tge old west and clothing from the 70s to the 2000s. There's a old west frontier island in my storys world called Tabbantha Isle.
Tabbantha Isle? Hmmm....I like that!
@@ArizonaGhostriders Thanks. Today I'm working on writing story #1 of my mythos project and trying to think of a title for story #1 that is already finished. I'm getting further inspiration from the Japanese mythology, spiritualism and folklore within the legend of zelda series as well as inspiration from the mario franchise especially super mario 64. I'm planning on adding a scifi fantasy version of samsara and the uroboros symbol to my stories and world, which is a sureal, nonsensical and weird type world with dream logic, video game logic and cartoon logic as tge worlds physics.
Another great episode Santee. Keep em coming. JT
Thanks, will do!
I bought two of the shield shirts in the 80’s and wore then. I wore mine like the Duke with right top unbuttoned. They were great shirts.
Very cool!
i love these episodes about clothes! it really helps with picking a good outfit :)
Cool!
I own two bib shirts and enjoy wearing them. Great info, thanks.
Glad you like them!
Cool idea especially in a time before washing machines. Anchors away my friend. I mean cheers!
HA! Thank You!
Yup, I have two, A red one and a blue shield front with yellow trim. Like Custer had. I do need a few more though.
Cool!
You really anchored that one.
HA!
I absolutely love these shirts. I wore a blue one while doing War of Northern Aggressison reenacting. It was my favorite. When the bib would get dirty, all I had to do was reverse the bib to the clean side.
Cool!! Love it. Great use of that shirt
I wore a few 50+ yrs ago as a kid in Kansas. Bib shirt we called them, Snap button western shirts, boots, and Levi jeans. Moved to NY the jeans stayed.
There ya go!
Thank you !!!
You're welcome!
Wife got me one last Christmas. Love it.
Good!
Until I watch this video, I never once noticed that those actors were wearing those shirts. It never registered. Now I’ll probably notice them every time they’re in a western film.
Good!
I had the idea of making one of these shirts, so...I cut it out, my sister finally sewed it together and then embroidered snakes and cactus on the cuffs and collar. She won a blue ribbon it in in her fair in OK.
Whoah that is so cool!!
Never fails I always learn me something new when I watch your videos santee
Glad to help
Always did wonder what the name of that shirt was 👍 maybe one day I’ll get me one. Awesome video as always keep up the awesome work and can’t wait to see the next one.
Thank You!
Thanks Santee 👍
No problem 👍
I made one out of red plaid wool (customer wanted that fabric). The store bought pattern was not made to be a pull over shirt, but had a button up front. Then it was found that he was allergic to wool, so the solution was a navy blue cotton lining. The bib hid the button up shirt front and came out looking very good. I have to say I was sick and tired of making button holes by the time the project finished. It did look good with the bib partly unbuttoned. Should I ever make another one I will go for the pull over pattern !
So neat!
Hi there! I met you today at old town Tucson! We had a huge talk about red dead redemption and guns!
Yes we did! A pleasure to meet you. Subbing to your channel now.
I plan on getting one. My current outfit is a bit fancier with a pasley red and black vest but I want something that is more blue collar as it were.
Very cool. Enjoy getting and wearing your wardrobe
Santee, I love how you implied, if only subtly, that the "old west bib shirt" was supplanted by the Hawaiian shirt... Unless I'm mistaken, it seems your point is: "Have gun, noone will question your fashion choices, whether bib, or loud floral print..."
HA! No, I was showing the parallel to unbuttoning a modern shirt to show off the manly chest to unbuttoning a bib shirt.
@@ArizonaGhostriders Ohhhh, makes sense. 😏👌
@@jmmartin7766 Of course, now you've given me an idea for "Hawaiian Shirts in the Old West"🤣
@@ArizonaGhostriders It was a very rare, very subtle genre of clothing. I think, originating with the gauchos in S. America, and worn only by the toughest Americans like Butch and Sundance 😏
Always a great channel!
Glad you think so!
Yes Sir Santee the Duke did wear it well.🤠🇺🇲
Yep!

You too!
The bib shirt was standard wear among cavalrymen. George Custe4 was most likely wearing one the day he died along the bluffs overlooking the Little Bighorn. It was much to hot to be wearing a buckskin jacket though h3 was most definitely wearing buckskin pants.
It wasn't regulation clothing, but soldiers did wear them on the plains.
I like wearing mine in the winter
Yeah, that's the time for them (at least in the Southwest).
I used to have 2 of these. I loved them, but I outgrew them. Need a couple more of them now.

I love the bib shirts, I have one right now, but need a couple more. I really enjoyed this video,
Appreciated.
I went through a WahMaker phase when I was in my 20s. Had a bunch of period shirts, but sadly missed out on the bib shirt. Was pretty easy to pull off a banded collar in polite company, but the idea of a Bib shirt made me very self conscious.
Yeah, they aren't for going to the mall in, but for what we do they are perfect.
I have seen these stylr shirts worn by New Zealand's in thick woollen material, it gets darn cold there.
I don't doubt that!
It be cool to have a t shirt with the Billy the Kid type anchor and bib pattern screen printed on the front… 😁

I had my first shield-front shirts custom made for me in 1975, so I was an early adopter. More recently, I was fortunate to purchase some very nice ones from River Junction when they were selling out old stock on eBay. I got them for half price in 3XL which I need. Sorry you missed out. Real shield shape burgundy with blue piping, and forest green with yellow piping which I over-dyed green. Paul said they were not able to restock because the ladies who made the shirts were just not ablate make them anymore. Arthritis I guess. It looks like some people are still making them, but the ones with piping are rare. My favorites are these, but with smile pockets under the shield. Not Old West, but hey.
I think I remember them! They do sound good. Glad you got one.
The subject of Billy’s shirt is truly fascinating and the story of that image. I was reading to hell on a fast horse by mark lee Gardner and he talked about that in detail. The fact that there’s no real conclusion of the color of material for the shirt is a rare chance of us being able to take some reasonable liberties in its replicas. Also the fact that all of his friends who saw the picture said it looked odd and not like how he really dressed. The most common consensus from the people I’ve talked to and books I’ve read is he just dressed up with studio props for the most part because everyone said he really typically dressed like the local New Mexicans. That being wearing basic standard clothing of the time but with wide brimmed low crown sombreros and an occasional sarape
That's correct. It was a traveling photographer, so may not have had a lot of clothes. However, Paulita Maxwell (I believe it was her), said she never liked the way Billy looked FOR that photo. I think it may not have been all his. Either way...it's all we have. Since we don't really know, we go with what we have. The shirt could have been red also, but with the lighting in the show, we went with blue (the other main color).
Eighty years or so later, the Monkees wore them.
Yep
I love bib shirts, have a few of them and it isn't something you see much out here in Saskatchewan (rarely see western stores selling them). Like banded collar shirts, they are different and more interesting than the current basic shirt style we have today. I always wonder if shirts like this went out of fashion or if manufacturers didn't want to make all these multiple styles and people slowly stopped making their own clothes so the current basic style of button shirt just became the standard.
Not exactly sure. Styles change. The pullover went away, too.
