Birkin bags have become the ultimate status symbol, commanding resale prices as high as $500,000 for a single bag. Unless you have been chosen by Hermès, resale is likely the only option for obtaining a bag. Luxury resellers like The Real Real in New York have many options available online if you have several thousand dollars lying around.

Why Birkin Bags Are So Expensive | So Expensive

  • Found it amusing that it was inspired by a humble straw basket and designed to be functional for working women but now it’s nothing except a status symbol.

If you study diamond clarity, cut, and color and had the time to see them in person and own real diamonds, they’re really spectacular and the most amazing thing you will ever own in your life. Period. For example, VVS diamonds start at $10,000 USD. I don’t buy it because it’s expensive. It’s a stunning work of art. Yellow and pink diamonds are astronomically expensive because they are actually rare. Low quality grade diamonds are not rare. They’re very common and if you’re not careful, you can be ripped off. Any informed consumer will learn to look at the imperfections of any diamonds with a magnifying laupe.

At first I was like "meh OK it's just another expensive bag", but when I heard that they artificially create the 'rarity' of the bag by not selling it outright (like all that bullshit with being lucky enough to get one offered or gifted) I was so furious. Let's steal all the bags, then burn down the factories and then just give the bags away on the street.

  • The bag design actually existed long before Birkin, it was called the 'haute de courroi''. It was designed to hold riding boots. In order to make the crocodile one you must first go to the crocodile farm, it's an interesting place to visit, concrete pits are everywhere and usually way too small to hold the animals who fester in green dirty water all day in the sun but don't worry they are given food to keep them growing. The next step is quite difficult, you have to drug the animal to make it more compliant then holding it down you push it's head down the edge of the table and shove an iron bar through a slit in the back of it's neck and all the way down it's spine. This holds the pattern of it's scales in place which is very important as they figure largely in the finished design of the bags. The crocodiles have to be alive when this happens but they die in an hour or so and of course their mouths are bound so they don't make any annoying sounds. Hundreds of animals are skinned each day as the demand is as great as the control of the sites are innexistant. In the end you have a lovely holdall for your ipads, iphone, lipstick, gun, vibrator or whatever you decide to use it for. The crocodile ones are usually sitting on a shelf all day waiting to earn their living by simply existing. I wonder what they do with the teeth ?

Every species of albino animal/ humans(in some counties) have been taken and sold for a large amount of money. A market creates demand for a rare item, you bet there will be illegal Poaching.

      @nicolalocke5409@nicolalocke54094 жыл бұрын
    • It’s not particularly likely they waited for the alligator to die of old age before they skinned it for a bag. Aside for supply meeting the demand at the scheduled time, animals are usually killed at a certain age when their skins or furs are considered the most optimal condition for it to be considered luxurious. For example, some items have soft calf skins as opposed to tougher adult cow skins. Some animals are killed young while their fur is soft because it gets coarser as the animal gets older.

She said something like "This bag is meant to be used, and worn out and live. You stuff all your things in there. This bag is too new , too stiff ! Let me show you!" She then stuffed some magazines and things in it, put it on the floor and started stomping it and jumping on it. The TV hosts were screaming ! She then handed them the bag back "There ! you see! It's solid! It won't break! It's supposed to be used and live and be mistreated! It's not just a pretty thing!" All this from the woman who inspired the bag.

How much that labour is depends but in france at the hermes workshop maybe $40 an hour. So its already around 3500 dollars and if you include logistics and marketing (not advertising because they dont need to) its maybe $4000. Lets say retail is around $12,000 their gross margin is 200%. Not too crazy for a high end luxury item. They really make the big bucks on the accessories and houseware you need to buy before you qualify for a birkin which probably has much higher margins. Flagship items for luxury brands are often not the big money makers but contribute to the overall prestige of the brand. Its the $500 made in china hermes branded slippers that will really get you.

  • “Hermes has created something inaccessible, and thus, highly exclusive”…At least they’re honest. It’s amazing how false scarcity can trick people into buying a bag at ridiculous prices, that they don’t even get to pick the color of. There’s nothing particularly special about these besides the fact that the company makes them hard to get. The minute I heard the phrase “if you’re lucky enough to be offered one…” I was like NOPE. You’re not doing anyone a favor overcharging them for a purse. That attitude is MAD classist and is not gonna age well. It’s a lot like diamonds-They’re not hard to find, they’re actually very common, companies just don’t mine that many to try to keep the price up. There’s a reason a lot of younger people don’t buy diamonds-I honestly feel like they are kind of tacky a lot of the time. These are beautiful bags, but I’d honestly be embarrassed to be seen with one of these right now. 10% of the population of the United States is facing eviction because of money troubles, and you have a bag that could pay their rent for years, that you don’t even carry? Yeah, no.

One is made from the epidermis which is the top layer of skin, very strong but soft whereas cheap or “genuine leather” is made from the dermis which is very stretchy/wears down easily but can be coated with plastic to make it look more like the top layer/ the full grain/top grain leather.
