Vialism for Dummies (twenty one pilots explainer)

Vialism is one of the Trench storyline's most prominent mysteries. It seldom receives attention from Tyler and Josh as it is rarely talked about. It has never been directly mentioned in any music videos or songs at all. We only know it exists thanks to the dmaorg and, even then, information is scarce.
The lack of information on vialism is baffling to say the least as, arguably, it is the most important part of trench lore. It explains why the bishops are the antagonists and why the Banditos were created to rebel against the Niners in the first place.
Today I'm going to uncover that mystery and explain what vialism exactly is.

  • love the video! something that occured to me the other day is that the neon Gravestones are the |-/ logo, which has often been associated with the phrase/mantra "stay alive", except it's inverted, turning it into a symbol literally means "death"/not staying alive/becoming "glorious gone". I'm constantly blown away by the depth of meaning they've infused into every part of this world

    @CharlieRosek@CharlieRosek Жыл бұрын
    • They really thought of every point. Even crazier when you consider the trench logo has double bars to consolidate defending the message of 'stay alive' against the bishops, proving the purpose of the Bandito group and their intentions

  • i would like to add something - i found out a few months ago that dema is situated on the southern tip of the big island of hawai'i. this could possibly mean that trench is set in a post-apocalyptic world where dema is one of the only bastions of civilization

    @iwaju9227@iwaju9227 Жыл бұрын
    • I know Dema is reminiscent of the dystopia genre as it features totalitarian dictatorships (In this instance, the regime is a theocratic municipality), and some of the places within trench are based off of the real world - for example, Vøldsoy is based off of an actual island called Vøld-soy in Norway. Dema itself has ties to an Iranian religion called Zoroastrianism (which I'm going to talk about in another video), so it could very well be based off of that island!

  • aaaaaah! I'm I love with your content and excitement it's been a while. I was really excited for this video video to come out. You did a great job! Vialism was always something that interested me so much. ((I'm sorry for my English :/ )) all i wish is that tyler and josh could see things like that from the clique. They are so deep and give to us so much that it would be great to motivate them to see that the clique really "chews" it ALL up. especially given how everyone is rushing things so much recently and reducing theories to just theories. it's nice to see that we can go much further and learn so much. Well, about Keons (I've seen your video about him as well) But this one about vialism made me think. What if keons represent the "romance" of that religion? The thing that attract people to there and keep them? My question about him isn't why he died anymore (since he's the fear of death and knowing that life is temporary maybe can make you wanna leave dema and want to have a purposeful and worth life) but why THE BISHOPS killed him? Not the thing about being a traitor but... why? The meaning of it? I'm really excited for them to explain that on the next Record. If it's just for fun and lore I'll be glad, even tho I really doubt that only this could be reason.

    • Thank you!! Im really glad you enjoy my content, especially when it comes to more original content such as theory videos as opposed to news updates which I'm mainly more known for. My dream one day is for Tyler and josh to just know about this channel, it'd be kinda cool! As for the Keons theory, I'd say that's a good lead! After all, each bishop represents something and I've seen ideas about him fluctuate between fear of death or just anxiety in general, which could make sense why people follow him back to Dema or enjoy his presence as it seems he represents something the bishops may not want to endorse (if they want people to die, why have a bishop that represents the fear of that?) My answer as to why they keep Keons around probably has to do with WHY there is a fear of death. Heavydirtysoul has an emphasis on religious connotations - many theorists have noted it seems to be a song asking for salvation from one's demons, and this salvation can be in the form of help or possibly religion. If the religious connotations are accurate, then it could refer not to the fear of death but the fear of what comes AFTER death to fit into Tyler's crisis of faith. If this is the case, then vialism helps to answer that crisis by guaranteeing what rewards you will accrue in the after life (permanent immortalisation as a neon gravestone) hence why they keep him around but ultimately kill him in the end as what he represents still prevents death somewhat

  • I have a theory: The Banditos were previously Dema citizens. How else would they know about the Bishop's religion, because they keep that very secritive. And why else would they have to wear yellow? The yellow is so the Bishops can't see them, and therefor cannot take them back to Dema. I'm not totally sure about this but it's a possibility.

    @spritz218@spritz218 Жыл бұрын
    • This has all been confirmed and is 100% true!! The Banditos are all former citizens, finding out the secret of vialism encourages them to escape. Notorious instances are Tyler and Clancy. The Banditos wear yellow not only because it hides them from the bishops, but because it represents positivity and the soul, placing them in opposition to the bishops who represent negativity and do not value souls, instead valuing vacant vessels

  • Very well said, and… I don’t know if you have looked into any of this or thought about it, but a) the government system that forces ‘equity at all costs’ is socialism which quickly leads to communism, and ultimately you are forced to not have anything unique or beautiful, as beauty and novelty is part of what inspires creativity and the divine. This has been heavily documented in history of the Soviet Union, but of course our schools don’t teach young people about it, and instead indoctrinate people into the Marxist mentality in the name of equity through covetousness. ( also one of the reasons why I believe Tyler felt conflicted over standing for BLM in 2020- I think he knew it was a Marxist-constructed platform as has now been clearly revealed). In this ideology your identity is what your governing body says it is ( and is where the ideology America is on a fast-track to going). And 2) the ritual stuff… you know that this is basically what the conspiracy theorists say is happening in Hollywood and among government elites with Satanic Ritual Abuse, right? The Bishops are the elites operated by demonic forces of illumination ( Lucifer was an Angel of false light). The only difference is that the life force they live longer lives off of is adrenochrome that is produced in the blood through fear, using torture and ultimately a sacrifice. They hang people upside down by their feet in empty pool halls and let the adrenochrome drip out..There are also rumors that they breed people in underground tunnels and prep them for these types of rituals. Not to mention, child sacrifice to the gods was a pagan ritual going back thousands of years, and they would manipulate children in cultures outside of Israel to believe they were chosen to be the sacrifice and believe this was how they would be loved and cherished. I think the boys don’t go into detail for good reasons; they want you to research and think about it. I think there are too many parallels without it being ‘on the nose,’ and the fact that neon gravestones is a direct song that tells you literally what happens in Hollywood… I think they are trying to tell you what is behind it without being direct. My two cents. Many people are finally waking up to this horrific fact of why human and child trafficking is really happening. It’s not just for sex. It’s way worse than people think, and Tyler and Josh have an insight into this elite world that we don’t. Those are my thoughts. It’s all extremely spiritual, and they are trying to help people figure out how to find true meaning and life in this world so they don’t get sucked into this trap. They have geniusly woven MANY layers into this divinely inspired masterpiece. The timing of it all is so crazy too. In 2024, probably the year of the biggest stakes our world has even seen, their final album is coming out to help bring clarity. Only the true God can operate so masterfully through such willing and gifted vessels to expose truth to those who desperately seek it. ❤

    @rebeccaelinton@rebeccaelinton5 ай бұрын
    • 1.) Many dystopias often utilise extreme versions of real world ideologies, for example Orwell's 1984 is a metronome between extreme communism and fascism whilst Margaret Atwood's 'A Hand maid's Tale' details the impact of patriarchy, new right Christianity and misogyny. The Dema story is in a bit of a unique place, however. I wouldn't argue it's a reflection of a communist regime as there is implied to be a clear division of power between some members than others. For example, the bishops are at the top (whereas a communist regime would at least /try/ to keep an illusion of equality as seen in the novella 'Harrison Burgeron'), there are guards that exist which was confirmed in one of Clancy's letters (these seem to be the 'watchers') who therefore have more powers than your average Joe, and there are also the 'glorifieds' which we talk about in this video, who enjoy special privilege from the bishops such as the submarine performance in Saturday before they are ultimately killed. As I stated in the beginning of this video, Dema is not a fascist or communist regime otherwise it would likely fall into being a dictatorship. Instead, Dema is a theocracy as it takes the religion of vialism and uses it to govern, ultimately leading to the wrong and harsh way of life we see in the story. You could argue this theocratic regime is particularly based on issues with a fundamentalist America, where Christianity influences governmental decisions (as seen with the overturning of Roe v Wade which ultimately removed a woman's fundamental right to bodily autonomy). 2.) Whilst the conspiracy theory is cool, I think it's way off the mark. The Dema story has been interpreted in three ways in lieu with the general themes twenty one pilots follow with their music: it's about the impact of mental health (neon gravestones is a critique on the glorification of suicide as many people used to criticise the pilots by saying they were romanticising mental health. This song is a response to that), it can be interpreted as the issues of religion (after all, this regime is a theocracy and the leaders are called the bishops, something exclusively seen in Christian religions. Tyler has talked many times before about his struggle with faith), or it's about the issues of the music industry (lane boy and levitate really solidify this and, to a certain extent, so does neon gravestones as it details the issues of glorifying suicide in celebrity culture, how suicide is celebrated to gain views rather than mourned and prevented). This isn't Tyler and josh warning us about some kind of dark side based off of a very small conspiracy theory only found in the corners of the internet, in true twenty one pilots style it's talking about some of their own personal struggles. However, I do recognise that the story can be interpreted as however you want! I just think Hollywood is a bit of a stretch, but that's just my opinion. Moreover, to add, I think you've missed the mark on the 'vessels'. The point is that the soul is important and the bishops disregard this, instead viewing people as vessels they can possess to use for their own means. There shouldn't be 'one true God' who can navigate across these vessels and have power over them (please note, many Dema citizens are not forced into vialism. They are willing and the bishops exploit that), that defeats the point of each individual being unique and autonomous by having a soul. P.s. If you think schools are indoctrinating children into a Marxist perspective, I would really take a look at what actually goes on. It's more nationalist in the US which can lead into fascism if not watched carefully. If your complaint is that children are learning people should be treated more equally and that most state institutions are corrupt (which doesn't take much research to come to a conclusion), I fail to see how that's a bad thing. Children should be taught to be critical of the world around them, especially those that hold a lot of power and make decisions with our lives. Also also, BLM was not a Marxist movement. It was a movement founded to gain equality for people of colour after an outbreak of long-growing racism in America. To say it's based on Marxism is misrepresenting the basis of what happened in 2020 and the deep-seated issues within America's political and police system.

    • @@Good_Day_Dema I thank you very much for your long response! You gave me some good things to think about: I have never read Harrison Burgeron- will look into that. I only know what I know of the reputation of the Soviet Union and China when they decided to implement a communist/fascist regime. I will ponder your suggestions. As for the political choices in America, I absolutely agree we need to be taught to critically think and not take any idea given to us as correct! I just don’t think that is what is being taught in schools as I am witnessing as a teacher. I know we seem to disagree politically, and I have been on both sides of the political spectrum, however, I believe most people’s perspective on politics comes deeply from their world view or the philosophical and spiritual implications. It’s the war of morality and what it means to be a good person that Tyler keeps referring to. I do agree that both ends can be dystopian as long as imperfect humans try to take control. It’s the problem I think he is trying to solve in this story of cycles. I will further reflect and respond. I appreciate your depth and insight. ☺️

    • @@Good_Day_Dema okay so this is kinda like a word dump but if you wanna see more, I have every letter from Clancy annotated with questions and some explanations of what I think is going on if you'd like to see them Neon is used to control citizens of Dema. It surrounds them and somehow weakens them. One of clancy's entries says 'it's this glow that reminds us of the dreamless existence we've been sentenced to' Every room in dema has neon, as seen in Nico and the Niners In The Outside, Keons is surrounded by large beams of neon like he is trapped. As soon as he (or Clancy through him) throws the beam on the ground, the bishops all start to try to leave. As if they knew before that the neon was keeping him prisoner In Bandito, the lyric: in city, I feel my spirit is contained, like neon inside the glass, they form my brain. Those trapped within dema are guarded by the neon. When the burning of the neon starts to waver that's when they start to panic because when the neon extinguishes, they are the next glorious gone - typed notes = stuck in Dema, hand written = outside of Dema - Clancy's Notes mention being smeared. He talks about how others have been smeared at the hands of the bishops, strangled. Sounds like it could be lethal but in later notes he says he is willing to be smeared to find out the breach location for their escape. So being smeared most not be able to kill you. However, we have seen someone being smeared. Tyler. The black paint on his neck at the hands of the bishop. I'm not too sure what it means but later on in Clancy's notes when he is found by Keons, he is also smeared. Also in trench music videos, Tyler = Tyler. SAI music videos, Tyler = Clancy.

  • My question, when they become glorious gones, is it in a ritual, as this is hard for me to wrap my head around, as they would need the deaths to be unified and that there are many ways for them to become glorious gones, such as drowning would result in a bloated body and not really useful for the ritual. And secondly are the bishops able to heal wounds via possession as wouldn't the death wound affect them and the body's stability? Or am i just looking too deep into this

    @joshhale1340@joshhale134022 күн бұрын
    • All of these are excellent questions and, unfortunately, there are no answers in the lore for some of them. 1.) how does one become a glorious gone? There isn't much information regarding the process of one becoming a glorious gone - all we know is that the glorifieds commit su*cide at roughly the same time to create enough available vessels (unknowingly) for the bishops. There ARE implications, however. Although I didn't mention them as this enters theory/speculation territory. Redecorate, a song that can be considered to be about vialism, has the lyric "I don't want to go like this, at least let me clean my room", which implies that the speaker is begging to someone who has come to take them away. Moreover, redecorate goes on to say "put your ear up to the door, tell me can you hear him saying?". Through this, it can be implied that glorifieds are notified when it is their allotted time to die and commit su*cide within the isolated confines of their room. As for how (TW: this goes a bit more in depth in sensitive content) NATN which is a song explicitly about rebelling against Dema seems to give us the answer. In the first verse, "save your razorblades now not yet" is constantly repeated. It seems to be implying that the citizens of Dema die via self harm. 2.) the situation in Saturday seems to be a complete accident. As stated in the Clancy letters, this seems to be the festival. Judging by how, the festival in Saturday seems to have performers, we can assume this is kind of a 'last night alive' scenario. This is their last night alive before death the next day. Keons attacks the ship, however, to allow for Tyler and josh to escape - this is his betrayal - and as a result people do die. 3.) Unfortunately we don't have much information on the possession itself, but we do know it is only a temporary thing in some cases; Dan and Sally during the livestream end up decaying after a while. Meanwhile, the main vessels that the bishops inhabit likely have their life force increased by seizing other people.

    • @Good_Day_Dema Thank you for the extra information and for spending the tine to go through it, as you can tell I'm more new to the lore of Twenty One Pilots, I entered during the movie experience and since then have gotten a basic grasp of the lore and I thought as this ear is going to be quite lore heavy I should learn as much as I can so have been going though as much of your videos as I can and this has really helped my knowledge, so thank you. And the theory and speculation that you have mentioned does make sense, so thank you for going over that. I never considered that they were using the razorblades for that as I had assumed that they were made by the banditos and not the people in Dema and the only other way I could think of them committing su*cide from one of the songs that could be a uniformed wat as guns for hands "putting my fingers to my head" but then, if the people of Dema had access to guns it would be a quick rebellion and a vessel obtained from that method would probably not be as useful, so thankyoufor turning my attentionback to the razorblades as that does make the logical sense. I never considered point 3 that they could draw power from other vessels by seizing into them while remaining in a current vessel as like a quick energy top-up while not actually transferring to that vessel. This has really helped my understanding, so thank you, and have a good day.

  • Do you think Clancy is the son of one of the bishops, or was the heir to the title of bishop, and is why the bishops focus on him instead of the other bandetos.

    @KakutoKishi@KakutoKishi Жыл бұрын
    • All bishops attempt to recapture escapees - Clancy establishes in his first letter that escapees are given fpe badges or 'smearings' as punishment - so the pursuing of Clancy isn't just exclusive to him, I think, it's to all citizens, likely as the bishops need their vessels and also because they don't want word of the secret of vialism getting out. BUT, if Clancy is Tyler (which there is some evidence for), then the bishops likely pursue him for added, special reasons. A.) The power of the music he creates and B.) It's established that Clancy is the only living person who can possess others and be possessed using the soul transfer ritual, therefore is special in some form or way that either is dangerous to the bishops or useful to them, hence why they likely focus on him

      @Good_Day_Dema@Good_Day_Dema Жыл бұрын
    • @@Good_Day_Dema his ability to use the soul transfer is one of the reason i think he may be the heir to the title, and Clancy means “son of the red”(maybe the bishops?) also he said neco told him he was a copy in morph, even though the most logical assumption is that it means he is a copy of Tyler, maybe it means he is a copy (clone) of one of the bishops. Also keons (I don’t know how to spell his name) calls him “my child” this is all thin speculation. I love your Chanel your videos are the quality of film theory! Can’t wait to see more! Your keons (still not sure if that name is right) video was sooooo cool!

      @KakutoKishi@KakutoKishi Жыл бұрын
    • @@KakutoKishi the 'son of red' is a good theory - I know some people alternate between saying he may be a literal copy of Nico (so maybe not his son, but maybe a fraction of his soul gone rogue during a transfer... So kinda like a son?? More like an exact copy tho), whilst others argue that it's a visual indicator on who Clancy is as Tyler has pink hair. As for the "my child" part, I don't think that indicates that Clancy is a child of the bishops for several reasons. 1.) If the argument is that Clancy is a child of Nico, how can he also be a child of Keons logically speaking? 2.) In Dema, if you look at FPE badges, it seems that Dema citizens are identified by numbers rather than names. It could be possible that keons is addressing Clancy by "child" because it's just easier than using his numerical name - perhaps he doesn't even know his name is Clancy. 3.) Clancy could possibly be a pseudonym. If Tyler is Clancy, then chances are, from a story perspective, they aren't going to reveal that information lightly in order to keep some mystery. So the best way to get around that is to keep Clancy's true name a secret by calling him "my child". 4.) Keons is trying to convince Clancy to return to Dema and he is known as the kindest of all the bishops, attempting to have a connection with his citizens. Calling him "my child" is not only a term of endearment and care, but it illustrates closeness and trust, it is an attempt to convince Clancy that Keons cares and that he is concerned, hence why they must go home

I've always aspired to be a channel like film theory, and I always enjoy having interactions with people as we get to bounce off of each other in terms of theory wise. I mean, it could be true that Clancy is the child of the bishops as, despite being close to Keons and living within his district, Tyler revealed in an interview that Clancy's bishop is actually Nico

  • Nice explanation. I still believe DEMA, the bishops, and so, must be an analogy for something in the real world too. I mean it's too relatable with other stuff like how any government goes.

    @byAnArgentinian@byAnArgentinian10 ай бұрын
    • Dema and the bishops are definitely something that can have a multifaceted meaning; part of what makes twenty on pilots so relatable is that they incorporate dual meanings into their work so it can be interpreted in many unique ways by the clique, thus allowing them to create their own meaning from it. Dema has not only popularly been seen as a metaphor for mental health but it has also been interpreted as the pressure and corrupt practices of the music industry. As for real governmental stuff, whilst I can't find anything governmental that relates, Dema is a theocratic dictatorship which is seen in many countries such as Iran and, to some degree, America recently (although I wouldnt call it a dictatorship, more or less heavily theocratic due to laws being influenced by religion)

      @Good_Day_Dema@Good_Day_Dema10 ай бұрын
    • @Good_Day_Dema Totally agree. About the government, I was thinking more like the "rebelion against the system" vibe, like some reggae, such as Bob Marley, used to sing about. And since the old songs have a lot of reggae on them... it's like Never Take It has all the lyrics that the old songs asked for.
